A new report released today by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools looks at next generation learning models in schools – those using time, talent, and technology in innovative ways. Specifically, the report evaluates current practices at four innovative schools and makes recommendations for policymakers to better support this type of personalized learning to help increase student achievement.

Breakthroughs in Time, Talent, and Technology: Next Generation Learning Models in Public Charter Schools, authored by Shonaka Ellison and Gillian Locke of Public Impact, explains three core aspects of next generation learning:

  • Time, structuring the day around a pace more suited to the students they serve rather than a strict bell schedule;
  • Talent, hiring and cultivating teachers around their particular expertise, exploring innovative tutoring models, and utilizing master teachers; and
  • Technology, incorporating digital self-paced learning with multiple ways for students to receive and understand new content.

As the report states, “The term ‘next generation’ connotes for many the idea of “technology enabled,” or using technology to enhance a certain product or process. But next-generation models move beyond technological innovation. These models’ core goal is to truly personalize learning so that each student can reach his or her potential. To do this, next generation models must use time and talent—in addition to technology—in ways that differ significantly from the traditional school model.”

We work very hard to incorporate the three core aspects at the Tracy Learning Center and provide students with time needed to learn in a day diversified for learning a variety of things.  We hire the best teachers we can attract and we incorporate technology in all aspects of the curriculum.

Primary Charter

In Initial Phase, we said good-bye to summer and hello to fall.  We are wrapping up our unit on seasons and ready to move on.  Students showed what they learned through writing, projects, and even during math activities. What a fun way to welcome the new season!

Reminder: As the weather grows cooler, students will have more and more items to keep track of.  Be sure to label all articles of clothing to ensure a safe return.  

What a “sweet” week Phase 1 had!!  We learned all about Fall in Science and P1 even got to taste test apples!  Red was the favorite over green. P8 learned all about Johnny Appleseed and made some really cute hats.  We have begun writing friendly letters in Writer’s Workshop.  We will exchange letters next week and then write back to each other.  What fun it will be to have pen pals!  We are looking forward to Spirit Week next week….don’t forget to wear your PJ’s on Monday!!

Phase 2 is excited for Spirit Week next week!  P6 started making Lion King masks for our Primary float.  Every PCS student is welcome to walk in the parade next Friday.  Each class will pick a few students who get to ride on the float.  This week P6 started opinion writing and P3 worked on expository writing.  We are learning about Native Americans in social studies including what they ate, wore, and how they lived.

Primary Dress up Days for Spirit Week:

Tuesday:  Twin Day

Wednesday:  Sports Day

PHSA 7th and 8th

This week the leadership class discussed what they could for their homecoming float.  Ms. Powers suggested picking a song to create the float.  Mr. Warmerdam split the group up into three groups sot they could brainstorm idea based on FROZEN.

On Friday, September 19, the students voted on the best idea.  Then we started building the float.  We are making great progress.  Everyone in leadership is working and using their talents to make the float a good one.  This is our first team project.

Mrs. Stewart and Ms. Kay are concerned with the behavior of some students in Mr. Gardea’s homeroom.  This class has about seven students who are constant disrupters and we have seen little or no change in the behavior even after discipline.  These students were all warned today about their behavior and know that they will be suspended if behavior does not consistently improve.  It is not acceptable for a class to be unruly or disruptive and rude to a teacher.  Mr. Gardea is new and is working very hard to set up routines with his classes but he cannot do this when there are constant disruptive students.  We are very pleased with the many in the class who are trying and are doing well.  We will not let a few ruin things.

It is very important that there is good communication between the school and the home.  We appreciate hearing from parents about good things we are doing as well as things we could improve.  While this year has had a few bumpy parts, I am pleased with the progress we are making.  The greatest challenge we have faced this year is the number of new teachers we have this year.  It is not easy to be a new teacher in any school setting, but working at a school like the ones we have is really a challenge.  Both students and parents expect high caliber teaching from day one.  I am pleased with the new teachers we have hired and have made adjustments when I thought it was needed, but I am also patient.  I know it takes a while to make an outstanding teacher. This does not happen overnight.

What we need from parents is support when a student complains about a teacher or a class.  Often it is the teacher dealing with students who are testing boundaries and are not acting as they would in any other class.  Right now, we are dealing with some of that in PHSA.  I believe we have selected a good teacher to replace Mrs. Hawkins and I am embarrassed as to how some of the students are acting towards this new teacher.   There are other situations that will improve with time if we all work together.

Thank you for your support as we help new teachers adjust to our way of doing things.

Primary Charter

Thank you to everyone who has participated in the Mixed Bags fundraiser!  Orders are due Monday.  Please make sure checks are made out to TLC and we do not have to collect sales tax.

In Initial Phase, we are gearing up to experience our first ever homecoming parade on October 3rd!  Our theme this year is Lion King the musical.  Primary will make a float and students and parents are encouraged to come support our school in down town Tracy. Along with homecoming, our students will experience Spirit Week.  Look for information to come home soon about fun themed dress up days as well as our parade.

This week the students in Phase One have been learning all about friendly letters and how to write them. Next week they will be receiving pen pals and writing a letter to them. They will then respond to their pen pal after. In science, the students learned about the three states of matter; solid, liquid and gas. They did many activities and experiments showing the three different states and how they can even change from one state to another state. Their favorite one was the Fizzy Purple Cow (a root beer float with grape soda). In language arts, they are continuing to learn about parts of speech and excelling with the AR program. The students are doing amazing and the teachers are so excited about all that they are learning!

Phase 2 students have been productive workers this week!  Several students in both P6 and P3 have earned SWO bracelets and are working on earning their rainbow bracelet.  Great job! This week P3 finished their map projects in social studies.  P6 started learning about Native American homes.  Ask your child what type of home a nomadic Native American lived in!  We are also very busy in Writer’s Workshop.  P3 worked on opinion writing this week and P6 finished up narrative writing.

Scrapbook cover pages were due on Friday to Ms. Pelaez. We will begin working on the Personal Awareness SWO next week. Directions for this portion of the scrapbook will be given by Ms. Pelaez to all students on Monday along with a copy of the rubric. Students will soon begin working on a personal awareness project in Ms. Wallace’s class as well. Both portions of the Personal Awareness SWO are due by October 17th.

PHSA 7th and 8th

Please check student agendas for grades and check the calendar for behavior.  Green is what we are expecting.  Oranges indicate poor behavior in class.  Several oranges will result in suspension.

The students in leadership are working on their float ideas.  The shoe drive was very successful.  Thank you for your support.

Language Arts teachers have begun the expectation to read at least one book per month. Students should have a book with them at all times to read if they have extra time in class.

Mr. Warmerdam is very pleased with the progress his students are making in social studies.  He was impressed with all they accomplished this week in their work with the Bill of Rights.

MHS

Busy, Busy, Busy…that has been the theme in the High School this week. So much is going on and so much is fast approaching. We have had a great week of spirit as our first Home Football game approaches tomorrow night at Tracy High. The game begins at 7:00 pm and the students are very excited. We are also very proud of our soccer, volleyball and cross country teams as they continue their impressive seasons. We have so many preparations underway for homecoming. Floats are being built, Powder Puff football and cheer begin practicing today. The annual Haunted High is beginning to get organized and we had a great Field Trip today to a few trade colleges. Of course, the most important thing is what we are doing in the class rooms. The first quarter mid terms are fast approaching and students should be focusing in and getting ready to ace these tests. Studying should be a big part of a students life over the next two weeks. Quarter grades really serve as a progress report for students in their classes. For freshman, this is the first opportunity to experience a major test like a final or midterm and for them to get used to the routine of the week and the preparation that is required to do really well. Falcon Pride!

Mr. Saldate

Virginia’s Voice

I read an article recently that I felt was a great indicator of successful teachers.  It was addressed to parents and noted that as good as a school may be, it comes down to the teacher.  A child’s education is determined by the commitment and ability of the teacher in the classroom.  I honestly feel that the Tracy Learning Center strives to hire and maintain great teachers.

The article noted four ways to spot a great teacher.  It said that parents should seek out educators who:

Have active intellectual lives outside their classrooms.  Teachers with large vocabularies are better at their jobs because this trait is associated with being intelligent, well read and curious.  The best teachers often love to travel, have fascinating hobbies, or speak passionately about their favorite philosopher or poet.

Believe intelligence is achievable, not inborn.  Effective educators reject the idea that smarts are something that only some students have.  They expect all children to perform at high levels, even those who are unruly, learning disabled or struggling with English.  These teachers help students learn something new every day.  Good teachers spend time going into depth rather than time teaching the same things the same way.

They are data driven.  Effective teachers assess students at the start of units to find out strengths and weaknesses, then quiz students again when units end to determine whether concepts and skills have been learned.  Teachers learn from the assessment and change plans according to student needs.

They ask great questions.  They go beyond to obvious and ask the whys and hows of simple questions.  They ask about connections to previous learning and they connect things for students by asking them to reflect and consider possibilities.

Parents and teachers can work together by supporting one another with these four great aspects.  Good schools need effective teachers and parents working together.

In Initial phase, we have enjoyed learning about weather, seasons, and climate this week.  Students have been busy showing their knowledge through writing, illustrating, and projects.  Next, we will focus on fall and how the weather changes.  We are excited to welcome fall and the cooler weather.  In addition, each class is working hard to learn sight words, letters, letter sounds, building strong number sense, and how to be a productive worker. Students in Initial phase come to school eager and ready each and every day to learn, grow, and play!  What an amazing group of students!

Phase 1 students continue to be thrilled about learning!  Science was really exciting this week.  The students learned all about sound, pitch, volume, and vibration. They know that sound can travel through air, water, and solids. They even got to make their own guitar!  In Writer’s Workshop students are finishing up their opinion writing.  Next week we will begin writing friendly letters.  Keep up those awesome AR scores and Rowely Math scores!! Thank you to those students that have graciously donated shoes for our “Soles for Souls” shoe drive. Progress Reports will be going home within the next couple of weeks.  Be sure to look for those in your student’s folders.  Enjoy Family Movie Night and have a great weekend!

Phase 2 is finishing up our geography unit.  We are almost finished with our map project and then we will be learning about Native Californians.  Every day in class our students use their supplies and binders and we are impressed with how organized they are!  We also have been giving out a lot of productive worker SWOs!

Reminder:  The Mixed Bag fundraiser ends on Friday, September 22nd.  We do not have to collect sales tax on the items sold, just collect the amount listed in the catalog.  Items will arrive about 2-3 weeks after the 22nd.  Please make checks out to Tracy Learning Center.  Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who donated shoes for “Soles for Souls.”  The MHS leadership students were excited to get our donations!

MHS

Another week in the books at MHS! We had a successful spirit bus to our first away football game of the season. The students had a great time, were well behaved and very spirited. They represented MHS well at the game. The students are fast approaching the end of the first quarter. Now is the time to ensure assignments are being completed and turned in on time; that the first portion of the SWO projects are being completed and ready for submission and that studying is being done as midterms will be taking place.

We had CELDT testing this week for our English Language Learner Students and we anticipate that many of them will pass this exam and become re-designated as emerging fluent English students.

This is such a busy time of year with homecoming fast approaching, preparations being made for our annual Haunted High event and athletics in full swing. The successful students learn to strike a balance between all of these opportunities while making performance in classes their priority. The staff continues to be impressed with the level of behavior of the student body in general. We look forward to all our fall events just like the students but try to keep them focused on what is important and that is getting off to a solid academic start to the year.

Virginia’s Voice

Between 2010 and 2013, 15 of 16 independent studies found that students attending public charter schools do better academically than their traditional public school peers. For example, one study by the Center for Research on Education Outcomes at Stanford University found that public charter schools do a better job teaching low income students, minority students, and students who are still learning English than traditional public schools. Separate studies by the Center on Reinventing Public Education and Mathematica Policy Research have found that public charter school students are more likely to graduate from high school, go on to college, stay in college and have higher earnings in early adulthood.

We know here at Tracy Learning Center, students perform better than surrounding schools.  We are proud of our accomplishments with students at all levels of the learning spectrum.  We personalize learning by grouping students so that they are working at the appropriate level of instruction for success.  This means that students are able to progress because they are learning what they need to know to proceed.

Our classrooms are interactive and student centered.  Students are expected to participate and be a part of the learning process.  When students are involved learning improves as well.

Primary Charter

Attention all Primary parents:

We have started the Mixed Bags Designs Fundraiser! Your child brought home a catalog and information sheet today in their green folder.  The fundraiser will run from today until Sept. 22nd.  Thank you for supporting PCS!

This week in Initial Phase students participated, for the first time, in Minute To Win It at Unity!  This was a fun and exhilarating way to start our day.  We cannot wait for next week so we can do it again!

Our new SWO this month is Productive Worker.  Many students are well on their way to earning their purple bracelet.  We work hard everyday helping students learn what a productive worker looks like, sounds like, and acts like.  Ask your student if they have been caught being a productive worker!

This week was a special week in Primary! We had our first “Minute to Win it” of the year and our Student Council elections. For minute to win it, the students had to pull all the tissues out of the tissue box the fastest. They had a blast and look forward to next week’s “Minute to Win it!” On Tuesday, all the students that were running for student council had their posters hung up in the lunch area, for all of the school to see. On Wednesday, the students were given the chance vote for those that were running. The students chosen were announced at unity today. Congratulations to all the students chosen!

The students in Phase one have been working really hard and learning a lot! In Language Arts, they are learning about parts of speech and story element.s In Math, they are learning about place value, expanded form and written form. They are even learning how to tell time! For Science this week, they learned about gravity and did several experiments and activities on what gravity is and how it affects us on earth.  Next week the students will be learning about vibrations and each student will need a shoe box for an experiment, so please bring those in by Wednesday, September 10, 2014.

What a great week for Phase 2!  We voted for our student council representative and admired their hard work on their campaign posters.  We know we will have an amazing student council this year!  This week also brought the return of Minute to Win It Wednesdays.  All classes got to participate in a fun game and cheer each other on.  We also learned about San Joaquin county this week.  We are looking forward to learning more about California in the coming weeks.

Reminder to all parents: Please remember that no parents should be coming through the front gate in the morning unless you are dropping off snack.  It is for the safety of our students and we appreciate your cooperation.  If you’d like to stay and watch Unity, please enter through the front gate when the students are lined up.  Thank you!

DCS 5th/6th

PHSA 7th and 8th

PHSA has completed the nominations and acceptance of the leadership student team for this year.  The students had criteria for acceptance which included grades and behavior based on oranges in the agenda.  Mr. Warmerdam is the advisor and he plans to have our students take a significant role in PHSA this year.  PHSA will be teaming up with MHS for the shoe drive.  They will be planning the float for homecoming and they are considering dates for the first dance.

The students have completed the first month of school and the tallies are in for oranges and greens for the month. Most students managed to have a successful green month.  These students will be included in a raffle for gift cards soon.

Math placement is always in need of fine tuning  After a month of learning the strengths of our students we are fine tuning the two high groups.  Mrs. King has sent a letter to parents and students involved in a refinement of the high math groups.  Both groups will remain high groups, one group will move at a faster pace.  This has affected Language Arts as well.  The two high language arts groups are using the same books and curriculum, so the switch from one teacher to another to accommodate math is not a change in level or curriculum, just the teacher.  Thank  you for your understanding and support of this change.

MHS

It has been a busy week at Millennium as our Athletic programs have begun. The MHS boys soccer team got off to a great start beating West High 3-0 in their opener. Today our football team leaves for their first game of the season and will be followed by a spirit bus of Falcon fans that are making the road trip to cheer them on against their first opponents. We have also had a great opportunity presented by our Band Director Mr. Zepeda to create the first drum line, color guard and drum major positions at MHS. There is no previous experience required for these spots in the band so anyone interested should see Mr. Zepeda for more details. In Mr. Saldate’s Government classes Seniors were presented with an opportunity to earn $165 by working at the voting polls in November. Sign up sheets are available until September 17 and then I have to fax them to Sacramento. Anyone who signs up is guaranteed a spot at a polling place near their place of residence. As the year progresses we are getting much closer to the midterm exams and the end of the first quarter. Students should be studying and making sure they are completing all assignments for the best possible grade in all their classes. Homecoming is just around the corner and there are also many community service opportunities available right now at the counseling office. It has been a great start to our year and we are so excited about what the rest of the year will hold.

Mr. Saldate
