Thank you for your continued commitment and support of our schools.  We never take your enrollment of your students in our schools for granted.  We understand that you have selected us as the best educational option for your child and we do not take that selection for granted.  We value your presence in our schools and we are committed to providing an educational program second to none.

We are happy finals and first semester is over for high school, we enjoyed watching the 5th and 6th graders who stayed at home for school science camp….they had a wonderful time.  We know that the students who were at away science camp had a lot of rain but also had a wonderful time.  We enjoyed seeing our little ones learning songs for the holidays and writing about the elf.  The band for 7th and 8th and the high school band performed extremely well at their winter concert.  All of these things make us proud and willing to continue to work hard for the success of all of our students.

Thank you for believing in us.  We wish you a joyful and great winter break.

Primary Charter

This week in Initial Phase we enjoyed our last week before break.  The students worked very hard to learn special winter songs taught by the talented Mrs. Watson.  Everyone who performed did an amazing job!  Each class also recognized their Polite Citizens for the month of December.  Friday was a fun day for everyone and we are ready for our winter break!  Thank you for a great 2014 and we will see everyone back in January.

Phase One

This week the students in Phase One continued to learn about holiday traditions around the world. Over the last two weeks they have learned about several different countries’ holiday traditions including Mexico, Germany, Israel, Australia and USA.

In Language Arts, the students read the book The Polar Express and did many activities and crafts relating to the story. They also wrote about how to decorate a Christmas tree and how to make hot chocolate in writer’s workshop. In math the students did some fun holiday math activities and crafts as well. Both classes also got to watch the movie Polar Express and were able to compare and contrast the book and movie. They even wore their pajamas and enjoyed some hot chocolate while they watched the movie.

Each class also had their own holiday performance for the parents to come and watch. P1 has been learning holiday songs with Mrs. Watson during elective. P8 learned some holiday songs during Social Studies as they learned about holiday traditions around the world. Thank you to all the parents and family members that took the time out of their day to come and watch the students in Phase One perform their holiday songs. The students were very proud of the songs they learned.

Phase 2

This week phase 2 students worked hard and showed that they are ready for the break!  P3 got to show off their awesome winter songs that they learned with Mrs. Watson.  They sounded great!  P6 finished a special snowman project and made snowflakes in art.  We learned more about winter holidays and traditions and P6 got to watch The Nutcracker and compare it to the live performance we saw last week.  We also wrote creative winter stories and some groups took their final unit test in math.  Thank you to everyone who brought in treats on Friday.  The teachers and students appreciate it…thank you for helping us have a very special last school day of 2014!  Have a great break!

DCS 5th/6th

5th/6th

Our DCS students had a wonderful and educational experience at Science Camp and came back happy but exhausted. We also heard our MHS Student Camp Counselors did a fabulous job. Mrs. Pelaez and her co-teachers did a great job leading our students and  were so proud of our DCS students

Our “Stay” Camp students also had a great week full of amazing experiments, lessons and games. They finished the week off with a really fun sleepover and left Friday morning ready for a nice long nap. All of our 5th/6th grade students are so fortunate to have such dynamic and energetic teachers!

PHSA 7th and 8th

In social studies the students just finished up a unit on Slavery which coincides with the novel that is being read in ELA.

English Language Arts  just finished a creative writing unit in which the students had to write several narratives.  Currently, ELA is  working on the Jane Schaffer writing method which is a method that focuses on writing evidence based Response to Literature essays.  Writing is a critical part of learning for students in middle school since high school assignments often require essay writing.

7/8 Science is beginning a new unit focused on the Periodic Table of Elements.

Math is currently working on converting decimals to percentages and the associative and commutative properties. Algebra students are doing well and progressing nicely.

The 7/8 girls basketball team got 2nd place in the championship game. We are very proud of the effort the girls made this year.  Way to go!

MHS Charter Chatter December 19, 2014

The Spring semester started this week and report cards were mailed out.  We encourage parents to continue to check Aeries on a regular basis to be a part of your student’s academic success.  Some other helpful actions that parents can take to help their student is ask to see agendas, double check for homework completion, be in communication with teachers, and set aside designated time for studying and homework.

New resolutions go hand in hand with the upcoming New Year.  For many, the Spring semester can be a fresh start as well.

PSAT results are in. Students will be receiving their results and test booklets at an informational meeting that will be held the week that school resumes.

In January and February, Mrs. Stewart and the counseling staff will be meeting with all students for their annual counseling review.  Fast track classes and next year’s schedule will be planned.  Only 10th grade parents will be invited for an appointment.  Time is extremely limited and we encourage 10th grade parents to rearrange schedules as necessary to attend their scheduled time. Appointment letters will be mailed out when we return from the holiday break.

Dec. 12, 2014                                                                                                               No.18

Gone are the days when all classrooms are quiet.  Productive student talk is an essential part of learning.  Talking, when focused usually is a good indicator of thinking.  Sometimes the talking goes astray and it is the teacher who needs to facilitate a change.  Teachers do know that talking facilitates reading the writing development.  Those who are able to express their thinking verbally usually do a good job writing essays as well.

There are some good conversational moves we can all make to help foster productive thinking and talking.  These moves include asking:

  • Can you tell me more about that
  • Would you say that again, it interests me and I was only half listening
  • Can you give me another example so I can understand
  • I wonder what others think about that
  • Take your time explaining, I can see you still want to say more about this
  • Why do you think that
  • Where could we find more information about that
  • I can say what you said and you can let me know if I heard it correctly
  • That is a great question; do you want to learn about it with me?

I always think of these as great car conversation starters when students are talking about things in their day or activities that can and do lead to other ideas.  Listening to the news together and commenting is another great way to extend thinking.  Talking is an important part of learning.

The students and I would love to have you join us during one of these exciting times! The students are working hard learning holiday songs.

Holiday hats will be allowed, provided they do not block other students.  Santa and elf hats would be appropriate.  Reindeer headbands and flashing hats may be too distracting.

We are looking forward to sharing some holiday cheer with you!

Mrs. Watson,

TLC Primary Music Teacher

Phase 1 Students had another wonderful week of learning.  The weather kept us cooped up and a little anxious, but we made through the week, especially with our elves, Luke and Peppermint, keeping an eye on us! The students had fun learning all about holidays and traditions all around the world.  P1 students made Kwanzaa mats, Hanukkah menorahs, and tasted tamales! P8 students made a suitcase and passport for their travels.  Mrs. Thompson taught about Hanukkah and the traditions. They traveled to Mexico and learned about their traditions and made poinsettias and traveled to Russia and learned about their traditions and made a Nutcracker.  We are so proud to welcome many new students to the AR program.  We have great readers in Phase 1.

Phase 2 students had a very productive week.  We are learning about holiday traditions around the world and even got to taste some different foods from other countries.  We learned about Hanukkah and other winter holidays.  Phase 2 students are also working on winter narratives and we have some very creative writers!  Please remember that we have lunch, recess, and PE outside so dress accordingly for the weather!

In Initial Phase this week students have been intrigued with all of this rainy and windy weather.  We have been busy discussing how to read a forecast to help us plan our day, travel, and what we wear.  Students are enjoying predicting the forecast as well.  Reminder, label all clothing, gloves, and hats that you send to school with your student.

Virginia’s Voice The first half of the school year is quickly coming to an end.  There were several expenses this year that added to the cost of our budget.  The recent rules regarding not requiring initial school supplies, and only asking for suggested donations for field trips has greatly reduced the money we receive from parents either in kind with school supplies, or reimbursement for field trips.  This has caused our budgets to be overspent for the first half of the year.  If any of you would like to make a donation to us as a non-profit organization, we would gladly receive it and send you a receipt for your taxes.  We have always suggested a $400 per year donation to help support our budgets, but rarely receive that amount from most of our parents.  Your donations to our schools will be greatly  appreciated.  Thank you for considering a donation.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the See’s candy fundraiser!  It was a big success!  Orders should be here next week.

In Initial Phase this week we have been busy track and graphing weather, reading, learning math facts, and many other fun and interesting things.  We are also talking about the importance of using the weather forecast to plan our day.  Furthermore, remember to label all clothing items to ensure a safe return.

This week in Phase 1, the students were very excited to be back from our week off. The students were so excited to return and find a friend from Santa Claus in the North Pole. It was their Scout Elf. Scout Elves are sent from Santa and report back to him every night while the students are at home sleeping and they return before the next day of school. Each class read the book and then named their Elf. P1 named their Elf Luke and P8 named their Elf Peppermint. Every morning, the students have been so excited to search for their Scout Elf and what he has gotten into.

In Language Arts and Math, the students are working so hard in their centers. They are learning a lot and making improvements every day. The students are amazed at how much they have improved in just the first trimester. They are very excited to continue to teach the students and to see all that they will accomplish in trimester two.

Phase 2 students came back from their week off, ready to learn and start the new trimester!  We are learning about holidays around the world and different cultural traditions.  We also welcomed our classroom elves and are working on winter narrative writing.  This is a good time to ask your child if they need some new supplies for their binders…pencils, erasers, etc.

ALL PCS STUDENTS:

A reminder that with rainy days classrooms open at 7:45- if a student is dropped off prior to 7:45, it is the parent’s responsibility to supervise them outside of the school gates.  For afternoon rainy days drive through carline will remain the same. If parents choose to walk up must they wait along the fence in the classroom’s designated line-up area A teacher will be there to communicate to the classroom who to send out. Thank you for your cooperation.

We are appreciative of the students who have learned that staying focused in class makes all of us more productive.  Teachers see a significant change in behavior due to the penalty for oranges.

High School finals are this upcoming week. Please note the schedule below.  Monday is a regularly scheduled day and Friday is an early release day at 12:00pm.   All week students were given study guides in many of their classes.  Encourage them to continue to study this weekend and throughout next week.  Report cards will be mailed the following week.  Also, in January and February, Mrs.
