Virginia’s Voice

I personally enjoy this time of year when I act as a counselor and consult with each of our high school students to plan their next year of high school.  It is so impressive when I see transcripts with almost all A’s or a student who has gone from doing poorly to improving so dramatically the student is excelling in higher level courses.

Many of our Juniors are taking college classes already and are receiving A’s in college.  The students have their tuition reimbursed for each class they take.  Many will have a full year of college completed before leaving high school.  It is so fantastic for them and a pride for us.

It is very rewarding to see how seriously our students take school and want to do well.  Others take a while to learn that missing assignments or not doing SWOs actually hurts grades and may even cause a student to need to take a class a second time.

Parents who check AERIES regularly and discuss grades with their students usually have students who perform better.  If any parent has difficultly checking grades, contact the counseling office and the counselors will help you learn how to access grades.

Illnesses

Just a reminder if your student is ill and unable to attend school please calls Kay Fagundes at (209)831-5240 or email kfagundes@tracylc.net . Students should not return to school until their symptoms subside and he/she is fever-free for at least 24 hrs. We have had so many sick children at school and the majority of these illnesses are highly contagious.

TLC’s Got Talent Show

Attention all students who completed and submitted an application to audition for the TLC’s Got Talent Show. The auditions for the talent show will be held next week. All forms have been returned to the students with completed forms informing them of the time, date and location of their audition. If you are going to be using amplified music please make sure to turn you music in to the MHS Counseling Department prior to your audition and or bring your music with you to your audition. Please audition in what you plan on performing in. If you have any questions in regards to the talent show please contact the MHS counseling department at 209-627-8299..

Tracy Learning Center has been approved as a new site for the strong and expanding tutoring/mentoring program Give Every Child a Chance!  They are bringing a homework assistance group tutoring program to our school for 7th through 12th graders.  The program is free for students who have a D or an F in any subject, an IEP, or a strong teacher recommendation. Math and Language Arts assistance will take place Monday-Thursday between 4:00-6:00pm in D-13, Mrs. Saldana’s room.  For more information about GECAC, please see their website:  www.gecac.net.  For an application, please contact Ms. Moore at the MHS Counseling Office, or visit http://www.gecac.net/downloadsapplications.html and click “One on One Tutoring Application”.  You may write in “Tracy Learning Center” as your site of choice.  Turn in applications to Ms. Moore at MHS Counseling.

Next School Holiday is Feb. 16, 2015 President’s Day

In Initial Phase this week students have discovered the groundhog.  We have predicted his forecast and are anxiously awaiting the ceremony on February 2nd.  It seems as though most of the students do not want Puxatony Phil to see his shadow so spring will arrive soon.  Also, the TLC annual Crab Feed is fast approaching.  Thank you to those of you who have donated to the wonderful event.  We hope to see you there!

The students in Phase 1 are getting into the swing of their new elective. P8 is learned a lot of fun new songs from Mrs. Watson and P1 is getting to do some fun art projects with Mrs. Wiltse.

This week for Science the students learned about rocks. They learned that there are 3 different types of rocks: sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous. They also learned about how rocks are formed and the rock cycle. Both classes were had the opportunity to design their own pet rock if they had one. P8 learned a fun song to help them remember the rock cycle. P1 did an experiment to see how rocks weather, by putting them in three different solutions.

P1 also had people from WOW on Wheels come to their classroom and let the students experiment with bubbles. They let the students use different tools to form bubbles. They had a BLAST!

In Writer’s Workshop, the students are using the writing process to complete their last writing assignment before they begin learning about poetry in two weeks. The students are writing a personal narrative and are doing a great job!

Phase 2 students had a great week!  We learned more about weather and climate, discussed extreme weather and got to do some fun hands-on science.  Some students completed their expository report on dinosaurs and other students worked on their final book project where they had to create a newspaper.  P3 had a special day for Mrs. Doss, who is going out on maternity leave.  Her students will miss her!  The phase 2 team welcomes Miss J, who will be taking Mrs. Doss’ place while she is out.

We are loving our new electives…ask you child to sing you one of the new songs they have learned or teach you a new art vocabulary word!

Congratulations to Katie Johnston for receiving the Star Student Award for the Week of February 2, 2015. Katie always works hard and is kind and helpful to all those around her. The teachers appreciate her willingness to lend a hand and help anyone who needs help. Katie shows wonderful leadership capabilities. She is a pleasure to have as a DCS student!!!

PHSA 7^th and 8^th

The students in social studies are now setting out on the Oregon Trail and working at understanding the United States quest for the Manifest Destiny.  While those in Ms. Santiago’s math class are working on solving equations.  Mrs. Barrett’s science classes are working on isotopes, radioactive decay and the periodic table.  The English Language Arts students are finishing the reading of Copper Sun, a wonderful book that has the interest of our students and they are reviewing the rules for persuasive writing in order to do well on the SWO.

Mrs. King’s and Mrs. U’s classes have just completed factoring trinomial squares and are mastering the whole idea of factoring.

The behavior in the classes has also improved.  There are fewer oranges and less student finding themselves in Saturday School.

Meanwhile the Leadership class is getting ready for candy grams and the Valentine’s dance.

Information will be going home soon for students interested in joining our Pentathlon  competitive groups.  We love competing and expect to do well again this year.

MHS Charter Chatter January 30, 2015

Mrs. Stewart and the counseling staff have started to meet with students for their annual counseling review.  Fast track classes and next year’s schedule will be planned.  Parents of 10th grade students who are not able to attend the scheduled counseling review appointments will be mailed a copy of the learning plan for the 2013-2014 school year.  Make sure to check in with your student to find out what was discussed during the meeting.

College bound seniors: most colleges will be notifying applicants the status of their admission in early Spring by either mail or online via a student portal on the individual college web site.  We anticipate hearing about the acceptance letters.  All students accepted to a college or university should let the Counselors know as soon as they are notified.  Best of luck to all of those who applied!

Seniors who need to apply for financial aid for college can get hands on help with the FAFSA (Free application for student aid) and have an opportunity to win a scholarship at our upcoming Cash for College Night on February 10^th at West High School.  We encourage all students and/or parents to attend this interactive workshop.  Computers will be available but we encourage students to bring a laptop.  For other Cash for College nights in our area, visit www.calgrants.org for a list of workshops.

CSF Club – Our California Scholarship Federation (CSF) club has grown to 70 members this semester!  Congratulations to those of our students who are returning, and to our new freshman members for your outstanding grades!  CSF is an honors society devoted to community service and strong scholarship.  Members are accepted by application only at the beginning of each semester based on the previous semester’s grades.  For more information about this state-wide honors organization, please visit http://csf-cjsf.org/.

COSMOS- California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science

SWOs, Dances, Science Fairs and College presenters; with so much going on at TLC it can be hard to see it all!  .  2015 has seen a strong start and even I am amazed at how far all our students have progressed.  When I walk into a class the first word that often comes to mind is “enthusiasm”.  This is something that TLC wants to nurture and encourage. If our students have the love of learning and enjoy the taste of success they can overcome even the toughest challenges.Our teacher meetings are often filled with the same thoughts and enthusiast students make our job so much fun.

I look forward to seeing you all at the TLC Crab Feed.  We all work so hard (parents and teachers) to make sure our children are prepared for life after school, it is great to have a chance to get together and celebrate!

Next School Holiday is Feb. 16, 2015 President’s Day

This week in Initial Phase students and teachers reflected on their visit with Mrs. Stewart.  We all enjoyed talking with Mrs. Stewart and demonstrating to her what we have learned and are currently learning.
When you enter a Primary classroom, the walls are filled with colorful posters, decorations, and educational material.  Teachers spend a lot of time planning and strategically placing “decorations” for a real purpose.
Our rooms are an important academic resource for our students.  As students work, teachers can see students’ eyes scan the room for answers. We do this on purpose.  As students scan the room, they are learning at an early age to
take control of their learning.  Students learn how to locate information to assist in the task at hand through the support materials found within the classroom.  This is a life long skill that will translate into every aspect of their lives.
As concepts change, rooms change.  The next time you are in a Primary room, take a picture walk around the room.  It is a great way to see what your student is learning.

What a great week Phase 1 students had!  In Science they learned all about soil and why it is important.  They know that soil comes in many different layers.  P1 students got to re-create those layers using cookies, pudding, and sprinkles! P8 students got to explore soil with their senses and then complete a project!  In Writer’s Workshop, students are continuing to explore narrative writing.  What awesome authors we have!  We are also seeing some amazing critical thinking skills happening in Math.  Great Job! Both classes have enjoyed their new elective.  How lucky for us to continue to have music and art available at our school.

Phase 2 students got a visit from Mrs. Stewart last week.  We got to show off everything we’ve learned so far this year.  She was very impressed with the things we are doing in math and science.  Out students were so enthusiastic to share what we’re doing in class.

This week phase 2 learned all about weather and climate in science.  Take some time to discuss the weather and temperature with your child.  We are starting to notice weather patterns and becoming aware of just how much weather affects us every day!  Phase 2 students switched electives this week and they are very eager to learn new songs with Mrs. Watson and create beautiful works of art with Mrs. Wiltse!

Thank you for cooperating with our new agenda policy.  A reminder that when students get on warning or yellow they must take their agenda home that day and get it signed.  Our green folder policy has not changed…they need to be signed and returned every Monday.  Students who don’t return folders or have unsigned agendas will result in lost privileges.  So far, everyone is doing an excellent job of being responsible agenda owners!

Congratulations to William Macgregor for receiving the Star Student Award for the Week of January 26th. William always works hard and is kind and helpful to all those around him. The teachers appreciate his willingness to lend a hand, especially with technology, and help anyone who needs help.

MHS Charter Chatter January 23, 2015

Letters detailing the scheduled 10^th grade appointment times should have been received earlier in the month.  Time is extremely limited and we encourage 10th grade parents to rearrange schedules as necessary to attend their scheduled time.

Winter Formal

Millennium will be hosting their annual Winter Formal on Friday, February 6^th in the MHS gym. Tickets are on sale during lunch through Friday, January 30^th. Tickets for individuals are $15 and couples are $25. Guest passes can be picked up at the ticket sales table in the gym. The suggested attire for this even is semi-formal.

Teens for Jeans- Community Jean Drive

Millennium has chosen a New Year’s resolution of helping others. Our first community service project is Teens for Jeans, which donates lightly used jeans tom homeless teens in our area. Our collection effort will continue through February 12^th. Please send the jeans to school with your student or bring them in to the office.

COSMOS- California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science

San Joaquin Delta College Engineering Departments 28^th Annual Engineering and Technology Day

The 28^th Annual Engineering and Technology Day at Delta College will take place on Friday, February 6^th, 2015from 8:30am-3:00pm. The day’s activities will include Drafting Contest, Eggs Launcher Design and Competition, a robotics/electronics demonstration and a Career Orientation Seminar and an Awards Ceremony. I had a wonderful week visiting all of our Primary Classrooms.  I observed the teachers, talked to the children and “Walked the walls” of the room.  I am so impressed with the amount of information the students are processing and the pride they have in what they are learning.  I also told the teachers and the students that viewing what is on the walls of the room is similar to surfing the Internet….. there is so much to learn just reading what is on display.

It is a wonderful feeling to be a director of a school filled with committed teacher and fantastic, enthusiastic learners.

Give Every Child A Chance

Tracy Learning Center has been approved as a new site for the strong and expanding tutoring/mentoring program Give Every Child a Chance!  They are bringing a homework assistance group tutoring program to our school for 7th through 12th graders.  The program is free for students who have a D or an F in any subject, an IEP, or a strong teacher recommendation. Math and Language Arts assistance will take place Monday-Thursday between 4:00-6:00pm in D-13, Mrs. Saldana’s room.  For more information about GECAC, please see their website:  www.gecac.net.  For an application, please contact Ms. Moore at the MHS Counseling Office, or visit http://www.gecac.net/downloadsapplications.html and click “One on One Tutoring Application”.  You may write in “Tracy Learning Center” as your site of choice.  Turn in applications to Ms. Moore at MHS Counseling.

Next School Holiday is Jan. 19, 2015 Martin Luther King’s Day

This week in Initial Phase we learned a lot about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Take some time this weekend and ask you student what their dream may be.  We heard some well thought out and heartfelt ideas.  It is wonderful to see that we have so many kind, thoughtful, and caring little learners.

The 100^th day of school was this week and the students in P1 had so much fun counting to the number 100. The day started off by participating in a friendly competition with the rest of the school, led by Coach Caldwell and Coach KV. Selected students had to do push-ups for 100 seconds, toss a ball to a partner 100 times and volley a balloon for 100 seconds without it touching the ground. They had a blast cheering on their classmates! The students in P1 counted in their 100 items they brought in while the students in P8 made hats that said “I am 100 days smarter”. Both classes enjoyed a snack filled with 100 items.

For science, both classes learned all about fossils. They learned that fossils are formed from plants or animals that lived long ago, in a past geological age like dinosaurs. They learned that we can find their remains in soil and can put them together to form their skeletons. The students learned that when a dinosaur dies the bones are not in order so they have to be put them back together.

In Language Arts, the students are continuing to learn about all parts of speech, types of sentences, similes, quotation marks, commas and apostrophes. In Math, the students are learning about fractions, telling time, places value beyond the decimal and how to add with decimals. In Writers Workshop, the students are writing personal narratives.

This was the last week with our current elective teacher and starting on Tuesday, January 20^th they will switch. P1 will now have art with Mrs. Wiltse and P8 will have music with Mrs. Watson. The students are very sad to say goodbye to their elective teacher but very excited for a change and to start a new elective!

Phase 2 learned all about the scientific method this week.  We performed experiments and tested hypotheses throughout the week.  Some students are already thinking about what they want to do for the science fair!

Phase 2 has started using agendas to track daily behavior.  Students will fill out their agenda every day.  If they got on warning or yellow, they will write why and need to take the agenda home and get it signed.  Students who stay on green do NOT have to get their agenda signed every night, just at the end of the week.  We will also use agendas to write down important dates or information.  Green folder policy will stay the same.  Please make sure to continue to sign and return the green folders.  Please let us know if you have questions!

Electives will switch on Tuesday.  P3 will have art with Mrs. Wiltse and P6 will have music with Mrs. Watson.

Star Student:

Congratulations to Alfonzo Ybarra for receiving the Star Student Award for the Week of January 19th. Alfonso always works hard and is kind and helpful to all those around him. The teachers appreciate his willingness to lend a hand and help anyone who needs help. Alfonso shows wonderful leadership capabilities.

Special Shout Out:

We want to give a special Thank You to all the parents and friends that helped support us in our fund raising drive for Science Camp.  We made $260 from Dell’Osso Farms; $3.00 at Eagal Lakes; and $663.82 from the Turkey Trot.  We also made over $3000.00 from the County Office Raffle – hopefully one of our parents wins the money in April.  All this money supplemented what the parents paid for Away Camp and supported Stay Camp.  Thank you again to all the help received from such great parents!

Exploration News:

The Exploration Science Fair will be help in room D 5 on Wednesday, January 21^st from 10 – 10:30.

The Drama/Performance Exploration class will be sharing their 60s Dance Party performance at Unity on Thursday, January 22^nd at 8 AM.

If they would like, parents are invited to attend either event J

The weather has been very cold lately, please remind your student to dress accordingly. Been seeing some shivering 5^th and 6^th graders in the morning.

MHS Charter Chatter January 16, 2015

In January and February, Mrs. Stewart and the counseling staff will be meeting with all students for their annual counseling review.  Fast track classes and next year’s schedule will be planned.  Only 10th grade parents will be invited for an appointment.  Time is extremely limited and we encourage 10th grade parents to rearrange schedules as necessary to attend their scheduled time.

College Info

College bound seniors: most colleges will be notifying applicants the status of their admission in early Spring by either mail or online via a student portal on the individual college web site.  We anticipate hearing about the acceptance letters.  All students accepted to a college or university should let the Counselors know as soon as they are notified.  Best of luck to all of those who applied!
