Virginia’s Voice

We are quickly nearing the end of February.  It is very important that PHSA students know they must apply for Millennium to be accepted.  We are anticipating a waiting list.  It is important that those who wish to stay have an application on file by the end of February.

Next week is Mid terms for the high school.  A third quarter SWO is also due for Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors.  We will be on mid term schedule next week.  This will result in early dismissal on Friday for high school.

I am very proud of the work our Primary students are doing.  We have had a greater emphasis on science this year and the students are responding well.  I am very pleased with the curriculum and the outcomes we are experiencing.

DCS students are doing a super good job on their SWOs.  They are learning a great deal about the use of technology and are showing great work as collaborative workers.

I am always amazed on how our school shines through this event. Our amazing student servers and volunteers. To see our fine young adults take care of our guests was awesome.

These high school students truly make this an amazing event. Kudos are still flowing for how well the servers took care of their guests. So many people help in this event.

My gosh without our amazing committee, teachers, parents, students, generous companies and individuals, this event could not be possible.

Primary Charter

This week in Initial Phase students have been busy concluding their study of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  Ask your student what they know!  In addition, students learned about Chinese New Year and many even made lanterns.  Furthermore, students have an upcoming Trimester 2 project.  Each student is assigned a different community building to construct.  Shoe boxes, recycled items, and other fun materials will help make this project a success.  Contact your student’s teacher if you have questions regarding this project.  Finally, we have a field trip coming up.  Students will travel to the Children’s Museum in Stockton.  This will be a great opportunity to explore many of the buildings found within every community.  Be sure to get your permission slips turned in.  Have a great weekend.

What an amazing week Phase 1 had!  In Math P1 students learned all about measurement with standard and nonstandard units.  Did you know you can measure something with a paperclip or even a marshmallow! Both classes are enjoying the unit on poetry.  This week they wrote haiku, acrostic, and diamante poems.  What wonderful poets we have.  We also learned all about President’s Day and celebrated Black History Month by learning about important and famous African Americans who made valuable contributions to our nation’s history.  It was a short week, but still full of learning!

Phase 2 students learned all about electricity and magnetism this week.  Students learned about what types of material are magnetic and got to test the magnetism of items in the classroom.  P6 even made a human circuit and created electricity, just by holding hands!  We are still working on our poetry unit and most groups will continue this into next week.  Some groups are learning about famous inventors and we are learning how much technology has changed in the last 100 years!  P3 made totem poles with Mrs. Wiltse this week and they look great!

Please remember that green folders must be signed and returned every Monday.  Agendas must be signed the day that a student gets on the warning board.  Thank you for helping us teach our students how to be responsible and organized!

Did you know that February is our open enrollment month?  We accept applications for Kindergarten, and high school since these are the two grades that have significant openings.  We have the room to take 66 Kindergarten students for next school year and we accept 140 students for our Freshmen class.  Many of the Freshmen have been at DCS and want to continue with us for high school, but it is also a time to accept new students who have been waiting to get into Tracy Learning Center and others interested in our high school.  Kindergarten usually has a public lottery since we receive many more applications than space.  Please remind parents or friends about the importance of getting applications in to the office before the end of February.

Thank you to Donna Baker and the Crab Feed Committee for a sold out and wonderful Crab Feed experience.

Did you also know that research shows exercise improves student’s abilities to focus on tasks, and block out distractions?  After exercise, pupils are more awake and engaged in learning.  Both free play and structured exercise activities provide many benefits including interpersonal skills critical to social and emotional development.  Exercise, sports, or physical activity is essential for academics as well as health.

This week in Initial Phase students were busy getting learning all about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln!  Students loved learning that Abraham Lincoln is on the penny and five dollar bill and that George Washinton is on the quarter and the five dollar bill.  Some of us even took virtual tours to the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.

Thank you to those who attended and or supported our crab feed.  This is our largest fund raiser of the year and the money goes directly to our school. Have a safe and happy Valentines Day!  Don’t forget, no school on Monday, February 16, 2014.

This week the students in Phase One began poetry. The students have started to learn about different types of poems like acrostic and haiku. Next week they will continue to write more poems like diamante. They are having a blast writing poems and they are absolutely amazing! The teachers can’t wait to see what other poems they will write in the upcoming weeks.

For Social Studies this week they started to learn about economics. P1 learned all about the assembly line, food to table and production. P8 learned about businesses and were able to create a business in groups, complete with an advertisement poster. We will continue our economics unit in two weeks.

Both P1 and P8 had a small Valentine’s Day party where they got a special Valentine’s Day snack, decorated their bags for their Valentines and got to hand out all of their Valentines they brought in for the class. They also received their candy grams that were for sale through our very own Primary Charter Student Council. The students had a blast and really enjoyed handing out their Valentines to their friends.

Phase 2 students had a great time learning about rocks this week in science.  We have even had some students on the lookout for the three different types of rocks all around them, even on the playground and at home! We are starting a short unit on poetry, just in time for Valentine’s Day.  We are already proud of what our students remember from their previous poetry units.  Their creativity is impressive.  Thank you to everyone who brought in Valentine’s treats.  Have a great 3 day weekend!

Thank you to each of our parents who read the Chatter, keep informed, watch the grades of their students and e-mail us when there are concerns.  The involvement of our parents is a key ingredient to the success of our schools.  We know that there are always things we can improve and we strive to do better each day.  When parents complain about classes or grading etc there is usually something we need to pay attention to and improve.  We work to do that.  Unfortunately, all things cannot be fixed immediately.  Please know, however, we take all concerns to heart and learn from your feedback.

The newsletter is on the eve of the famous Crab Feed.  Thank you to each of you who have purchased tickets and who have volunteered to work.  This is our most important fundraiser of the year and we not only count on the profit from it but the good will and good times people have who attend.\

This week in Initial Phase we predicted, graphed, and enjoyed watching Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow.  Students learned many facts about the groundhog such as hibernation habits as well as how a shadow is formed.  Although most of the students were disappointed that Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and winter will continue, they enjoyed seeing him in action.

Thank you to all the families who donated to our TLC Crab Feed.  We hope to see you there!

How exciting….both Phase 1 classes earned their class party this week.  That means students are following classroom rules and earning SWOs.  Good Job!!  Students had fun in Science this week learning about plants, their life cycles, and photosynthesis.  Some groups started new AR goals this week, while others just finished.  There is certainly a lot of reading going on in Phase 1. Students also finished up their unit on narrative writing and are now moving on to poetry….just in time for Valentine’s Day!  Look for information to come home soon regarding classroom celebrations for Valentine’s Day.   The students know that Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog, saw his shadow, meaning there are 6 more weeks of winter.  Please remember to send your student to school with appropriate attire.

Phase 2 students are enjoying science this trimester.  Students learned more about weather and climate and we are moving on to learn all about rocks!  Start thinking about a science fair project!  This will be an at-home project and will be due toward the end of March.  If students are doing a project that involves long-term data (such as plant growth or weather) it would be a good idea to start planning your project soon!  Look for information to come home in the next few weeks.  Also, please remember that students should be reading every night.  Please do not wait until AR goals are due to try to do all your reading!  Students are given a goal to reach in a six week period and should try to plan and pace their points over the course of the six weeks.  We are proud of all the progress and growth we are seeing in reading levels!

DCS Charter Chatter:

Star Student:
Congratulations to Cali Castanon for receiving the Star Student Award for the Week of February 9, 2015. Cali always works hard and is kind and helpful to all those around her. The teachers appreciate her willingness to lend a hand and help anyone who needs help.

Social Studies:
Mrs. Wallace’s first two classes are busy getting ready for the next Wax Museum. All the monologues are memorized and the students are working on their acting skills.
The other four classes presented some really cool skits and project boards based on their research of various historical figures. Mrs. Wallace feels very fortunate to be a part of students really enjoying history.

Students are getting ready for the Science Olympiad. Ms. Pelaez is looking forward to a great competition this year.
