Primary Charter

Primary Charter, Tracy Learning Center, is currently planning our 1st annual Jog-A-Thon to raise funds for our education program. We would like to raise funds to help us with supplies, educational tools, technology and field trips. We are currently seeking sponsorships for our event t-shirts. We would like to supply a t-shirt to each participant that will display their “race day bib,” keeping track of how many laps they complete on the front. On the back of the shirt each of our proud sponsor’s logos will be printed!

On behalf of Primary Charter, we would like to invite your company to help promote our youth’s healthy, active lifestyles by being a proud sponsor of this event. We are asking for a $200 donation to help us purchase our shirts and sponsor our 1stannual Jog-A-Thon. If you are interested in being a sponsor please contact me at kvigil@tracylc.net or call me at 209-831-5240.

Our egg hunt was so much fun!  Thank you to Kindergarten parents for helping to ensure that our hunt was a success.  All students in Initial Phase were aloud to find 18 eggs!  That is amazing!  Over break, be sure to rest, relax, and have fun.  Remember to read and practice math facts each day to help us with a productive transition on April 13th
Phase 1 students got through the final stretch and made it to Spring Break!!  There was a lot of assessing and reviewing this past week and we are amazed at how much our students know and what they have accomplished!  Thank you to all those parents who were able to attend the Parent-Student Conferences. It is always a rewarding experience to be able to share with the parents what their student is capable of.  P1 students got creative with spring writing prompts and made a caterpillar project out of their writings.  The Vocabulary Challenge was exciting and we had 6 deserving winners.  P8 students had fun writing about what they are going to do on spring break.  They also created many amazing spring crafts. Both classes had a blast at the Easter Egg Hunt.  Thank you for all the egg donations!  Have a safe, relaxing spring break!!!
Phase 2 students truly impressed everyone with their science fair projects!  We have some very creative and innovative scientists.  It was a perfect wrap-up to our trimester of science.  Thank you to all the parents who attended conferences this week…the relationship between parents and teachers is vital and our conferences are very valuable.  Please note that some students have binders that are in bad shape…consider purchasing a new binder for your child so that they can start trimester 3 organized and ready! Have a fantastic two weeks off!

Virginia’s Voice

It is truly a good thing when parents have met with teachers and are still not satisfied with the result that they ask for an appointment to speak to me.  I appreciate the willingness to share the concern and to explain what has taken place.  It is a good time for me to mediate and help the teacher understand what he or she could be doing differently to rectify the situation in the future.

I believe that we have teachers who are on spectrum of experience here at TLC.  I also believe that starting out as a new teacher is a daunting task and I believe if I am seeing progress and growth, there is good reason to continue to help that teacher improve and grow into what excellence in teaching is here at TLC.

A good friend reminded me that the most important job of a director is to protect the vision and to be sure that over time the staff is reinforcing the cultural norms and vision for our schools.  In addition to promote personal growth directors need to have patience and use encouragement when that growth is evident.

We will always strive to provide excellence in education for our students and we will do all that we can do to support new teachers on their journey to excellence

Virginia’s Voice

Many of you have asked me what I think of Common Core. I know when something new comes to education, it is usually very controversial.  I do not feel that way about Common Core.  This is not a new curriculum; rather it is a new emphasis on thinking rather than memorizing.

The tests the state has used for years has measured what students know.  It is multiple choice and very specific.  Students can study and learn the answers.  The new tests are more creative in that they are computer based and they present problems to be solved.  It requires computer skills and problem solving.  It is harder but more challenging.

We are preparing students for a future full of changes and unknowns.  The only way to prepare them well is to help them to become lifelong learners, creative problem solvers, and good communicators verbally and with technology.

The Tracy Learning Center has been and will always be focused on helping students to think and solve problems.  We were never comfortable with state tests. These tests asked students for specific memorized answers.  We felt we conformed more to those tests than to the ones coming from the state.

There was a pilot test last year from the state for common core, none of the schools received any feedback because it was a trial, but our students seemed comfortable and ready for the challenge. So, bottom line, we are welcoming Common Core as an approach to learning and we plan on approaching it using much of the same curriculum we currently teach.

Thank you to all the Primary students who participated in the See’s candy fundraiser!  Orders will be here the week of March 23rd.

Please read the information that is being sent home today about Pennies for Patients.  Primary is trying to raise $3000!  Please help us reach our goal!

This week in Initial Phase, students and teachers have been busy assessing for report cards.  It is always exciting to see the growth from trimester to trimester.  These review weeks are an integral part of spiral review.  As we revisit concepts, students are able to recall information and apply it in new learning experiences.  We are always amazed to witness what they remember and apply in the new scenario.

This week in Phase 1 the students continued to learn about economics. P8 focused on spending and saving money. They discussed how they could earn money, what they would like to save their money for and they learned how to budget their money. P1 continued to learn more in depth about economics.

The students are finishing up their FANTASTIC poems! They have done just a great job and the teachers are so proud of their work! We are filled with little poets in Phase 1!

The book fair was this week. Both classes had the opportunity to go and take a look at all the books. They had so much fun! The teachers even had wish lists. Thank you to all the generous families that donated books to the teachers, we greatly appreciate it!

This week the students received a small box for Pennies for Patients. Each student can keep this box at home and return it when it is full. They can continue to do this however many times they want. Our school’s goal is $3,000!! It’s a high goal but with all your help we can make it!

Phase 2 students are wrapping up our trimester of science and are eager to get started on the science fair projects.  These are due on Monday, March 23rd.  We will not give students any class time to work on these; all work must be done at home.  Please do not wait until the last minute to start your project!  Parent help is accepted but please let students be creative and explore science on their own.  We will have them set up in the gym during the week of conferences so that parents can admire all the hard work!

Virginia’s Voice

I experienced a few very exciting things this week I would like to share with you.  Our Kindergarten children created a little city by making the buildings that make up a city.  The teachers helped them arrange their city on a lovely block of green butcher paper arranged with roads and signs.  The children’s buildings were then placed on the city blocks.  The buildings were terrific and the detail was amazing.  To the parents who helped, Thanks!  BUT the amazing thing about touring the cities was the pride of the children.  Each one was so proud of their building and they all wanted me to know which one they made.  The buildings are displayed in the main hall.  It is not as nice as it was when it was on the city block, but it is definitely worth a tour!

Yesterday, an excited group of DCS students were lined up for their pre-dance snack after school.  There was an exciting hum as they waited for their nachos and cheese and other goodies.  After eating in the assigned rooms, they were well nourished for the dance.  Each student entered the gym receiving a glowing necklace for the neon dance.  The darkened gym and the loud music added to the excitement of the glowing dancing.  Students today noted how awesome the dance was!

We held our Kindergarten lottery this week as well.  It is always sad to know that we cannot accept all of the children who want to attend Primary.  We had 22 openings after siblings and staff children.  We had many more applicants than spots.  It is sad, but nice to know our schools are valued and parents want their children to attend them.

The high school students completed mid-term exams and are now on the final quarter of their school year.  The amazing thing about high school is how quickly the four years come to an end.  Report cards should be reaching home soon.  While at the present time there is no lottery needed for the high school, we received 141 applications for the new Freshmen class.  We are accepting only 9 more applications.

Phase 1 students had another amazing week of learning.  In Social Studies, they continued their unit on Economics.  P8 learned about the importance of a farm and how products get from the farm to the table.  P1 learned more about goods and services and got to create their own business.  They made a plan, created an advertisement, and gave a presentation.  Awesome job! In Writer’s Workshop students are continuing to write poetry.  They are looking forward to creating a final poetry book.  P8 earned another Popcorn Party!  P1 is working towards earning their next Marble Party.  For many students, AR goals will be due soon.  Keep on reading!!!!  Please remind your student to check and make sure they have all their belongings at the end of the day.  Lost and Found is piling up!

Virginia’s Voice

Each year the Tracy Unified District sends a team of administrators and teachers to our schools to review our program and to ensure as the sponsoring agency that we are doing all the things we have outlined in our charter. The team visited this week and had many nice things to say.  It is good to have an outsider visit because often we just take some of what we are for granted and we do not realize it is not the norm in all of the schools.  Here are some of the compliments they shared:

  • Your class sizes are wonderful. The Primary children have an incredible teacher student ratio.  The high school class sizes are amazing.
  • The band room has an incredible inventory of instruments
  • The Primary Art and Music program is exceptional
  • Your PE program is filled with great activities at all levels
  • The one on one counseling you do with every high school student each year is unheard of but most be very rewarding for you and the parents
  • Your teachers are dressed so professionally
  • The student body, no matter which school, is so respectful, socially mature, and responsible.  It is so noticeable.
  • We know that respect and a strong positive culture is not just by luck, your staff must work hard to instill and consistently implement those values.

I am sure there are other things they noticed, but these are the compliments I heard and appreciated.  I do think we often take our schools for granted, but it is nice to be appreciated.
