Thank you to all the parents who emailed and called with questions about our Transitional Kindergarten program.  We are as excited as you are and continue to work through the details and logistics.  Once information is available, we will pass it along.  Currently, we are preparing our Pre-K and Transitional Kindergarten applications and these should be available in the office on May 1, 2015. Specifics on sites and staffing are still in the early stages and we must work along with the California Department of Education to ensure all the criteria are met.  For more information on that process and requirements please visit their site:   http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/gs/em/kinderfaq.asp

Attention Primary!  Yearbook order forms are being sent home today in the green folders.  This is your one and only time to order a PCS yearbook this year!  Orders and money are due on Friday, May 1st.

Phase 1 students enjoyed a happy learning week!  They have been so excited watching the caterpillars grow bigger every day!  Some have already attached themselves to the top of the container preparing to make their chrysalises.  The Ladybug larvae are also getting bigger and are ready to become pupas.  Phase 1 students also learned all about Earth Day.  They know how important it is to reduce, reuse, and recycle.  Many students have switched groups in this 3rdtrimester and are adjusting well.  We are so proud of the work they have accomplished both academically and behaviorally.  They have earned many SWO bracelets! Keep up the great work!!

Phase 2 students are very excited about our gold rush unit.  This week we learned about different types of people who were a part of the gold rush…did you know some of the storeowners made more money than the miners?!  In music this week, P6 learned all about the different types of instruments and P3 is creating self portraits in art.

Please note that 3rd and 4th grade students will have state testing in May.  P3 will test the week of May 11 and P6 will test the week of May 18.  Please do not schedule morning appointments during these days, as we will be testing in the morning.  Thank you!

TDAP Vaccine

A required by California law (Health and Safety Code 120325 – 120375), parents need to provide proof of a Tdap vaccine. All students entering 7th – 12th grades in the coming school year must have proof of a Tdap booster shot. Documentation must state the shot was given on or after their 7th birthday. This means ALL current 6th – 11th graders must get up to date NOW.

It is important that you begin now, to ensure your child get their vaccination and to avoid appointment delays.

Getting them up to date now, will not only protect them against Pertussis but also ensure class placement and prevent exclusion from school this school in the coming year.

Remember to ask your physician about other vaccines your child may need, and bring your child’s yellow immunization card to the visit. Please return a copy of ALL up to date immunizations to school prior to the beginning of the next year school year.

Star Student:

Congratulations to Trenton Hellman for receiving the Star Student Award for the Week of April 27th, 2015. Trenton always works hard and is helpful to all those around him. The teachers appreciate his willingness to lend a hand whenever one is needed.

Social Studies:

Period 6 and 7 are full speed ahead into their Wax Museum Project. They were super excited about having a voice in the creation of two of the Rubrics that will be used in grading this project. The performances will be at the end of May. Look for details to be coming home soon.

Smarter Balanced State Testing

In the beginning of May, we start administering the Smarter Balanced Computer Based Test in DCS.  Below is a breakdown of the testing schedule for each subject area. It is very important that students attend their full school day, as we are testing during core classes, not just in the morning.

Since we are running multiple computer tests at one time, we are asking that your child turn off their electronic devices completely during the school day to save bandwidth.  We want to avoid as many technical issues as possible with our internet. Please help make sure your child brings a book (no e-books) to school each day on testing days.

If you have any further questions or concerns for a specific content area, please e-mail the teacher of that subject.

We hope to work together to make this a successful testing experience for everyone.

Testing Schedule:

PE Monday, May 4th to Friday, May 8th
(please make sure students have appropriate PE clothes for class each day)
MATH Monday, May 4th Tuesday, May 5th Wednesday, May 6th
LA Monday, May 11th Tuesday, May 12th Wednesday, May 13th
SCIENCE Friday, May 22th
*Math Placement Test Thursday, May 14th
*All students in DCS will take a Math Placement Test to see which skills and concepts they have mastered and which level they will be placed in for the 2015-2016 school year.

Virginia’s Voice

IMG_1287   We are pleased to announce that our Primary Charter is expanding. We will be adding a Transitional Kindergarten.  This program is a state mandate for all schools offering kindergarten. It is designed for children who miss the new deadline for entering kindergarten. It acknowledges these children need more than preschool but cannot go to kindergarten. True to the TLC vision, we will address student levels and teach whatever curriculum the children are ready to learn. We will have grouping for instruction and will offer a full day program. Since it is state mandated, we will be reimbursed by the state so the cost for our Transitional Kindergarten will be free.  After school hours and preschool hours will have a charge. The program will run for 180 days beginning in August and ending the end of May. We will follow the TLC calendar. We will also make Transitional Kindergarten children a priority for kindergarten lottery the following year. Although, we cannot promise all will get into Primary. It makes the chances better. The lottery enrollment will first offer staff member’s kids, siblings, and  then it will be Transitional Kindergarten students. We are excited to begin this program.  We will accept applications during the month of May.  We are accepting 35 children.

AND that’s not all.  We will also open a preschool program for children ages 3 and 4.  This program will use our multiage philosophy and will be a five day a week, full day program.  Children will follow the TLC calendar. The children in this program will have priority for the Transitional kindergarten the next year. We will accept 44 children for this program.  Applications will be accepted in May. This program will have a fee.  Our fee will be competitive with other surrounding preschool programs.  After school and preschool care options are also available.
Please let your friends know about our exciting programs!!

Phase One
The first week back from spring break was great! The students were all so well behaved and seemed to have gotten taller too! The teachers sure did miss them over the two week break!!
In Language Arts, they are starting to read new books and the students are very excited! In math the student are becoming excellent mathematicians because they are mastering their math facts, learning all about measurement and even multiplication. For Writers Workshop, the student started doing research on someone famous that they look up to as a role model. Jackie Robinson, Walt Disney and Milton Hershey are all examples of some of the people the students are researching. They will continue to research their role model and eventually write a biography about that person. In science this week, the students learned all about life cycles. They learned the life cycle of a frog, chicken and butterfly. Ask your child if they can name the stages for each of those life cycles. In both classrooms, the students also received their own caterpillars that they will be able to watch grow into butterflies and then release. P8 even named their caterpillars!

Phase 2 students had a great first week back.  They are excited to learn all about the California gold rush and are already becoming experts on this important piece of California history!  In math, most groups are working on fractions or measurement and geometry.  We are heading into our final math units and state testing will be here soon!  Please have your child practice math skills at home using the websites IXL or Wowzers.
