Virginia’s Voice

As the rest of the schools in Tracy go on Summer break, we continue with four more weeks of school.  The High School has the opportunity to take a complete course for ten credits while in FAST TRACK.  Our Primary and Discovery students continue to learn and finish the curriculum we have planned for them.  It is an incredible opportunity.  We are never rushed to finish the curriculum; we are able to continue at the pace we have set all year.  Students have a firmer grasp on what has been taught and will have a shorter summer to “forget” what they learned.   There is significant research to support longer school years and longer school days.  It is definitely a great way to improve student learning.

The longer year and the longer school day coupled with multiage in our Primary and Discovery School gives students the extra benefit of working with the same teachers for two years. (most of the time, unless we change staff) This is another way that learning improves.  Teachers do not need to take time to assess what students can do if they have already been teaching them.

We believe the success for student learning at the Tracy Learning Center stems from our extended days and years, our multiage approach in younger grades, and our commitment to helping every student succeed by differentiating instruction to meet individual needs.

Thank you for your commitment to our schools.

Primary Charter

In Initial Phase this week students have amazed the teachers with how focused and energized they still are.  They come to school every day motivated and ready to do their best.  With only 20 school day left, we have been talking a lot about being first graders.  They are both nervous and excited, however the teacher know that they are going to do very well.

As the weather gets warmer, days get longer, and neighbor children are out of school, remember the extra five weeks our students receive of quality instruction is what sets our us apart.  We can do this!

Phase One is finally back to their normal schedule. The students did
an amazing job on their assessments the last two weeks and the
teachers are so proud of them! They are continuing to learn every day
and enjoying every bit of it. In science, the students learned about
the scientific method and conducting experiments. In P1 they conducted
an experiment on whether an orange would float or sink with or without
its peel. In P8 their experiment was on the affect soda has on the
enamel of your teeth by leaving an egg in a jar of soda overnight. Ask
your student what happened with their experiment.

Congratulations to the following students for being chosen as this
month’s Productive Worker SWO winners: from P1 – Ethan Knaus and Evee
Snell and from P8 – Ashlan Brantley and Rihana Shokoor.

Reminder parents: the field trip forms were due today, so if you have
not turned them in by now please do so ASAP. The field trip is
Tuesday, June 9th and we are going to the California Academy of
Sciences in San Francisco.

Phase 2 students are back to work after state testing! This week students in P3 have been writing and practicing their scripts for their gold rush presentation in social studies.  They are so creative and the students are doing a great job.  In art this week they made a monoprint of a cityscape that turned out really cool and have begun a paper sculpture project that promises to be very unique.   P6 students decided what businesses and activities we would like to have in our first annual “Gold Rush Town!”  They have some very creative ideas and we can’t wait to see what both classes come up with for their final presentations in a few weeks!

Please remember that even during the hot weather, students still need to wear appropriate footwear for PE.  They cannot wear flip flops.  Shoes must be close-toed with a back.  Thank you for your cooperation!

Yearbook Orders: We are still taking yearbook orders.  The books will be arriving that last week of school.  Unfortunately we are no longer able to add any more dedication pages (the final editing had to be completed several weeks ago).

You can place you order with Kay in the front office.

TDAP Vaccine

A required by California law (Health and Safety Code 120325 – 120375), parents need to provide proof of a Tdap vaccine. All students entering 7th – 12th grades in the coming school year must have proof of a Tdap booster shot. Documentation must state the shot was given on or after their 7th birthday. This means ALL current 6th – 11th graders must get up to date NOW.

It is important that you begin now, to ensure your child get their vaccination and to avoid appointment delays.

Getting them up to date now, will not only protect them against Pertussis but also ensure class placement and prevent exclusion from school this school in the coming year.

Remember to ask your physician about other vaccines your child may need, and bring your child’s yellow immunization card to the visit. Please return a copy of ALL up to date immunizations to school prior to the beginning of the next year school year.

Fast Track

Fast Track began Friday, May 22nd and will run until Friday, June 26th. We will continue to begin each morning with Unity at 7:55am with classes ending at 12:30pm.   Just a friendly reminder that daily on time attendance is crucial during Fast Track.

***Attendance Policy reminder: Due to the accelerated nature of classes, each day that is missed is equal to one entire week of school.  The maximum number of days allowed for absence during Fast Track is two days before resulting in a failing grade for the class.  Also, four tardies equal one day of absence. Any combination of tardies or absences of more than 2 days will result in an automatic failing grade regardless of the reason.  For this reason, please make sure your student comes to school daily and on time. We appreciate your support in promoting the importance of attendance and punctuality with your child.

Today the energy could not be higher.  The Jog-a-Thon for our Primary children is a great success.  The parent participation and the work of our PE department and our two Primary PE Teachers have made this a fantastic event.  The colors of the shirts, the tents at points in the jogging, the happiness of the children and the enthusiasm of everyone who is watching is just spectacular.  We all appreciate the volunteer parents who did so much to help the day be so wonderful.

FAST TRACK started today for high school.  For many students this is a great part of the school year.  Many students like concentrating on one course for four hours a day for five weeks.  They seem to feel very connected and focused.  Teachers love the connection to the class for that period of time as well.

PHSA is focusing on changes for next year.  We are changing the name, using a different system for rewards and for earning Saturday School that should have great appeal to the students and be more like the system used in the High School.  The returning teachers to the team are very enthused and willing to work on the changes.  Mrs. Wallace will be the new 7/8 social studies teacher joining the team.

DCS is enthused and working to complete the school year well.  The sixth graders are looking forward to becoming the seventh graders who will move up with Mrs. Wallace.  We have hired a great new teacher for social studies for 5/6.  Mrs. Hawkins, who used to teach here, is returning as the 5/6 Language Arts teacher.  She is very excited about her return to DCS.

The Transitional Kindergarten team is forming and we have hired two of the teachers who will be joining Mrs. Tyler for this new and exciting program.  We are continuing to work on finalizing the lease for the property we plan on using for this program.  TK will open with our other programs in August. There are a few spots left.  This program will be for 33 students. The PreK program is more complicated in getting a license and will not be ready until September.  More information about PreK will be available after we obtain the license.

Thank you for all you do. We have a great staff, wonderful parents, and the best students ever!

The Jog- A- Thon was a HUGE success!  When students arrived this morning, they were surprised by Jog- A- Thon shirts in their cubbies!  All students quickly put their shirts on and off to recess they went.  The playground was a buzz of students  predicting how many laps they would do!  In Initial Phase, students couldn’t wait for their teachers to do laps with them and we were happy to participate.  This was a day we will always remember.  The students were so excited and did an amazing job!

We are so thankful for the pledges and the fun memories we made participating.  We cannot thank Coach Caldwell and Coach KV enough!

Jog-a-thon Warm up

Phase 1 students have finished their assessments this week!  We are very proud of their efforts. They did a great job continuing with their regular curriculum while testing was going on.  Getting through these last few weeks can be very challenging.  We have reminded our students that more learning is what makes our school so special.  Please help your student to stay focused as we head into the final stretch.  The first annual Jog-a-Thon was a huge success!!  Thank you to all the parents that volunteered to help, come cheer their student on, or made a donation.  Have a great Memorial Day! Students are back on Tuesday, May 26th.

Phase 2 students finished up state testing this week.  They worked hard and we are proud of their dedication and hard work.  Students in P3 have had a fantastic week working on their final group projects for the gold rush units.  They are getting very excited about presenting it to students in P8 in a few weeks.  P6 students will begin working on their Gold Rush presentations for P1 soon.  In art P3 created beautiful symmetrical butterflies with paint and oil pastels.  Today they were full of energy and enthusiasm as they ran during the jog-a-thon, which was a huge success!  A giant thank you to our coaches who made the jog-a-thon happen!  Have a great 3 day weekend!

So many great things happened this week.  It was the final week of regular classes for the high school.  With that came the Awards Ceremony.  I am always in awe as to the scholarships and awards our seniors receive.  Did you know that this year, 49% of the senior class went to college while still in high school and received an average of 13 college credits.  Two students received over thirty college credits. One of those seniors will be starting college as a sophomore.  I am very proud of the work of our senior class.

This was also the week that we learned that the Tracy Unified School Board approved upgrading our school facilities with funds that add up to 30.5 million dollars.  This will renovate the main building and remove portables from our site.  The completion date will be here before we know it, but don’t expect completion until 2019.  It is so wonderful to think about the new facilities.  We are very grateful.  The 30.5 million is bond money and the addition of a grant we received for 5 million for the high school.  We are pleased that we were able to acquire a grant to help with this project.  In addition to thanking the TUSD school board, we are grateful to the citizens of Tracy who voted for the bond measure.

This week in Initial Phase, we have been talking a lot about our upcoming Jog-a-Thon.  Students have been practicing how to walk laps at P.E. and they are excited!  Remember, pledges are due on Tuesday, May 12th. Thank you to those families who have donated time to this event.  Furthermore, students have been working on demonstrating our monthly SWO, Productive Worker.  So many have earned a Productive Worker bracelet and many more are on their way.  We have even seen students with a rainbow bracelet!  What an accomplishment!  Ask your student what they can do to earn their Productive Worker bracelet.

Phase 1 worked so hard this week on their math assessments. The teachers are so proud of all they have learned thus far this school year. We really do have some great mathematicians! Next week we will assess the students on all they have learned this year in Language Arts. Testing will take place during our regular LA center time and LA centers will be done during our Science/Social Studies time. These assessments will help the teachers place the students in their classrooms for next year.

This week in Phase 2, P3 finished up state testing.  They worked very hard every day and we are proud of their perseverance.  It is a long test and they gave it their all!  Next week P6 will be testing.  Please remember not to schedule appointments before 1:00 during testing.  Thank you!

Please remember that Jog-a-Thon money is due Tuesday!  Thank you!

Virginia’s Voice

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week.  I believe we are very fortunate to have the teachers we have at the Tracy Learning Center.  The job of teaching here is not an easy one.  To be successful at the Tracy Learning Center a teacher has to be very dedicated to students.  The teacher needs to be doing so much more than teachers at other schools.  Our teachers teach 205 days with no minimum days or release days.  They teach a longer day.  Teachers do not rely on textbooks, rather they develop curriculum through a wide variety of resources to fit the needs of the students they teach.  The teaching is expected to be well planned out and interactive in nature.  Our students expect that.  I tell people we have made students very critical of teachers who are not as effective.  In addition, our teachers do all of the recess supervision and our car line service as well as eating lunch with the students.

Teachers in other schools sometimes think we must be crazy to do so much in a school day.  The teachers who teach here disagree, while they admit it is longer and more intense than other schools, the reward of seeing the results in learning and behavior with the students is worth it.

I am very appreciative of the teaching staff here at the Tracy Learning Center and I am sure you agree with me.

Primary Charter

This week in Initial Phase students have been busy preparing for Mother’s Day and learning about Cinco De Mayo.  Many have prepared a special surprise for mom and are very excited to share their surprise with her. This month we are working on the monthly SWO (Student Wide Outcome) Productive Worker.  Student can earn daily tallies toward a SWO bracelet.  A Productive Worker is a student who does their part within the classroom team.  Examples of how students can earn a tally are; completing work within the specified time frame, working with a respectful inside voice, and assisting a student who needs help.  Of course, there are many different ways to earn a tally and we strive to help our students learn how to productively work within a team.  Student can earn daily tallies toward a SWO bracelet, are recognized daily, and are always very excited to earn a bracelet.

Phase 1 students had a fun filled learning week!  They loved being able to watch the caterpillars change and grow into beautiful butterflies.  They then got to watch the butterflies fly away as we released them into the world.  Good luck little butterflies!  The students are continuing to work on their research paper.  They are learning so many interesting facts and learning what a role model really is.  Next week both P1 and P8 students will be assessing in math to help teachers get an idea of where they might be placed next year.  Please make sure your student gets a good night’s sleep and has a healthy breakfast.  Happy Mother’s Day to our wonderful parents…enjoy your day!!!

Phase 2 students will be state testing the next two weeks.  P3 will test next week and P6 will test the following week.  Please do not make appointments before 1:00 those days…we will be testing during LA and math.  Please be on time and eat a good breakfast!

This week students in P3 finished their Mexican suns for art and started a new project.  It is amazing to see the creative projects that Mrs. Wiltse comes up with and the time our students take to make awesome art.  In Social Studies the students are continuing to work on their research about the gold rush.  They researched famous people and immigrants this week so be sure and ask them what interesting facts they found.  P6 students are writing research reports.  Some students are writing about animals while others are researching a famous person that they admire.  This week in P6, we also learned even more about the gold rush.  Students wrote out trivia questions and we had made a game out of it.  Can you believe the boys vs. girls gold rush trivia game ended in a tie?!  We had a great week in Phase 2!

PHSA 7th and 8th

PHSA would like to say thank you to all of the students and parents who participated in and came out to support Academic Pentathlon this past Saturday. We were very proud of our students and all that they accomplished. Academic Pentathlon is very important to us here at PHSA and we are confident that next year will be even better. That being said, we are hoping that all of our Seventh grade parents will encourage the students to be a part of Pentathlon again next year.

The end of the year is very quickly approaching. Wednesday night Mrs. King and Mrs. Sierra held an informational meeting for all of our 8th grade students that will be going on to high school next year. The meeting included information about the end of the year activities as well as the ceremony. If you were unable to attend that meeting please contact Mrs. King or Mrs. Sierra for additional information. Also, parents, please keep in mind, in order for your child to be a part of promotion and the end of the year activities they have to have passed all of their SWO’s. If you have questions regarding SWO please contact your child’s SWO teacher.

State testing will begin next Monday, May 11th and will continue through May 22nd. Please remember, if you have any appointments or vacations to schedule them after testing has been completed. We will need all of our students to be present and on time for the next two weeks until testing has been completed. We appreciate your cooperation.

Virginia’s Voice

This is always a very busy time of year.  The high school is closing in on the last three weeks of their regular school year before finals and graduation.  The competition fever is coming to a head in PHSA and DCS with the two Pentathlons.  Math and Science tournaments are finished and State testing is starting.  Many times, this time of year brings stress and worry. Parents become concerned about who will be the teacher or the group my child will be with next year etc.  Please be assured that we work diligently to place every student in the best learning group possible.  We want every student to progress and develop and we know that is only possible if each student is addressed and at the appropriate level of instruction.

We will always strive to help each student develop their full potential and will provide the appropriate level of instruction that allows for success and for challenges that are not overwhelming.

On another note:

We have opened the window for applications for our TK and PreK program.  Applications for both are available on line and are due by May 15.  We are very excited about the start of these programs.  The response from parents has been great.

This week in Initial Phase students were busy learning about force and motion. Many experimented with marshmallow shooters, marbles, and toy cars. This was a fun and interactive way to experience and discuss how force (and even friction) can impact motion of various objects. As the weather continues to get warmer, please send your student with a water bottle labeled with their name. Have a safe and fun weekend.

Phase 1 had a fun week of learning! The students compared living and non-living things by characteristics. They learned a fun acronym to help them remember the 7 characteristics of living things and it is Mrs Nerg. Ask your child if they can tell you what it stands for. The students also discussed all the different habitats and the different types of animals that live in each habitat. In writers workshop the students are continuing to work on their biographies. They are doing an amazing job and the teachers are so proud of them! The students are enjoying watch our classroom caterpillars and ladybugs grow. All of the caterpillars have formed their chrysalides and have been moved to their habitat net where they will become butterflies.  Congratulations to Shiven Reddy and Yohannah Arroyo from P1 and Kyle Ardenyi and Roxie Burns from P8 for being chosen for this month’s SWO of the Month, which was Polite Citizens! Great job!

Phase 2 students continued their study of the gold rush.  We learned about different ethnic groups during the gold rush and we have some very fun projects coming up.  We are also working on researching and writing reports.  Some groups are completing online research for their expository reports and are developing very good research and writing skills.  Please note that phase 2 will have a field trip in June and information will be coming home in May.  If you are interested in being a chaperone, please make sure you are cleared in the office first.  This does not guarantee you a chaperone spot but it ensure that if you DO get picked, you are cleared to go and do not have to wait to get cleared.  Thank you!

To the Parents of Students in Grades 5, 6 and 7,

This is the time of the year when we all start wondering what mathematics classes will be offered next year.  We start by giving our sixth and seventh graders a placement test consisting of skills from grades five, six, Pre-Algebra and Algebra.  For those students already in Algebra, we give them the Algebra 2 readiness test. The purpose of these tests allows us to better place the students and tells us how many of what class we need.  It is always our goal to meet the needs of the students.

We are planning on offering the following classes next year at PHSA:

  • ONE Algebra 2 class
  • Algebra 1
  • Intro to Algebra
  • Math Applications
  • Math Essentials if needed

What we will not know is how many of each class we will teach, until the results of the placement tests are tabulated.  We have also taken a different approach, in connection with Millennium High School. We offer Algebra 2 immediately after Algebra 1.  The students do not “lose” any of their Algebra knowledge and there is not wasted time in Algebra 2 remediating the Algebra skills.  We have also found that most students are more conceptually ready for Geometry when they are older.

In grades five and six there will be an Algebra/Intro to Geometry class offered for those students who are ready for that challenge.  Appropriate classes in fifth and sixth grade skills will be taught as well as any remediation levels needed.

I hope this letter lessens any concerns that parents may have.  If I may be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me, lking@tracylc.net

Sincerely,

Leslie King
