Virginia’s Voice

We are well underway at the Tracy Learning Center.  We have completed the first four weeks of school.  It is exciting to visit classrooms and to see the growth among the students since they started.  Kindergarten is showing tremendous growth.  I am very pleased we have chosen to keep all of our “brand newbest friends” together in the same room with seven teachers.  They are thriving.

It is amazing to see the development of our Primary students from one week to the next.  I am delighted that each student is challenged in reading and math due to our small group instruction system.  Every student is learning at the correct level of instruction.

I must say that 5/6 Discovery students are doing exceptionally well.  The fourth graders have made an incredible easy transition to fifth grade.  It is the best transition we have ever had.

7/8 is doing well.  We are pleased with the pride and focus we see with our older Discovery students.  They are truly accepting the challenge of preparing for high school.

Finally, the high school which is larger than it has ever been before is boasting a great deal of spirit for school  functions and spirit week.  Club rush was amazing and there are so many worthwhile clubs on campus.  School work is our first priority, but for many sports is the motivator for grades.

In conclusion, I would like to quote a student who said to me the other day,” Wow, there are really great teachers at this school and they are all willing to go the extra mile to help us.”

Misc. Announcements

Next School Holiday is Monday, Sept. 7, 2015 – Labor Day

Discovery Car-line

We have had some real problems this week with DCS students going to buy snacks either from the cafeteria or from the street venders so when their parent pulls up their child is nowhere to be found. This creates a halt in pickups and car line backs way up. If your student is buying food afterschool please make sure you have communicated with him/her and make a plan that will not cause this car line back up. These students should be given walking forms so they can meet their parent somewhere rather than car line.

Medications

Please remember all medications which had been kept in the office at the end of the school year have been discarded. Any students who need to take medication in the office must bring in their medication in its original box along with the MD’s written authorization form. Students may never carry medication on them.

Parent Volunteers

Any parents who plan on volunteering this year must bring in their appropriate paperwork including a cleared TB Test which is good for 4 years and give it to Kay Fagundes. These forms are available in the front waiting area.

Walkers

PCS, DCS and DHSP students must turn in a walking form in order to walk away from campus and must walk to a “designated spot” away from the school so as not due bog down traffic coming and leaving the car lines. The exception to this is students from PCS who wait in front on the school in the bark area quietly waiting for their older sibling(s) to pick them up.

Late Pick Ups

PCS students who are not picked up by 3:50pm will be taken to P5 and will be supervised by Mrs. Null. There will be a $5 fee for these late students per occurrence. All students must be picked up by 4:30pm and parents must sign to pick their student up. If possible, please notify the office when you are running late and/or you are sending someone else to pick your child up.   This new plan is for your child’s safety and supervision and must be adhered to and will be strictly enforced.

PCS Students may not return to the campus or roam around campus after they have been picked up.

PCS/DCS Lunch Menu Week  Aug. 24 – Aug. 28

Mon. –   Pizza

Tues. –  Chicken Corn Dog

Wed  –  Nachos

Thurs. – Chicken Taquitos

Fri. –  Beef Hot Dog

Primary Charter

Primary parents:  We have had many sick students this week.  It is critical to our students’ health that they stay home until fever AND symptom free for 24 HOURS.  Controlling a fever with Tylenol or Motrin DOES NOT constitute fever free.  If your student is ill, please allow them to stay home to fully recover.

This week in Initial Phase students learned all about our classroom jobs!  We have a Calendar Helper, Chair Stacker, Office Messenger, Lunch  Monitor, Caboose, and Custodians.  Each week 15 random students are selected to do a job.  Students are very proud of their jobs and they are so excited to try them out.

Wow!  That first month flew by!  Phase 1 students have already accomplished so much! Many of our students have AR goals and have logged into IXL and Reading Eggs. Technology is really a big part of our learning.  Phase 1 students also had an awesome experience creating a time capsule which we buried.  At the end of the school year we will dig it up and compare the past to the present.  Next week in Writer’s Workshop we will begin opinion writing.  We can wait to see how our students use their reasoning skills to express their ideas.   Please continue to encourage your student to read daily.  Fluent readers become fluent writers and speakers!!  Have a great weekend J

Phase 2 students had a great week of learning.  We are using technology in our classrooms every day.  We use several online sites where teachers can track student progress and other sites that students can access at home for extra practice.  We also have some groups that already know how to use GoogleDocs and can type a document and save it!  Spellingcity.com and multiplication.com are great sites to use at home for reinforcement and extra practice.

GREEN is the color of the month! Students who earned an “all green month” have a chance to spin a wheel to earn prizes that will include gift cards, spirit wear, school supplies, and other fun items.  Next week during unity students will “SPIN it to WIN it.”

KONA ICE was a great success!!!  Thank you for supporting our School Wide fundraiser. The turn-out was AMAZING!! We appreciated the patience in line.  The staff had a wonderful time talking to parents and students who patiently waited in line for their delicious drink.

First ‘Thank You’ to all staff supporting spirit week – it is our first and leadership has learned a few things!  The first rally of the year was Friday and the student were extremely spirited with their EXTREME Fall Sports Rally.  In order to accommodate mid-terms for seniors and Junior late start, the rally was from 10:45am – 11:15am. Also, Friday is the first football game of the season. Students had the opportunity to purchase tickets for a spot on the Spirit Bus to attend this away game in Vacaville. We wish our team good luck and Go Falcons!!

Aug. 21, 2015                                                                                          Vol. 3 No.3
Virginia’s Voice

You may have noticed we have updated our TLC logo.  The new design is thanks to the artistic talents of Stephanie Arganbright .  The logo puts all of the expanded pieces of our educational program together.

Purple in the center represents our latest addition: Pre School which will open September 2 for children ages 3 and 4.

Blue is our Primary Charter which has added our new Transitional Kindergarten program.

Red is our Discovery Charter which houses grades 5 through 8 with an emphasis on preparing students for high school.

Black is our Millennium High School and the home of the Falcons.  It not only prepares students for college and life but it offers a full comprehensive high school program and opportunities to begin college before ending high school.

The entire logo is wrapped in gold which is the second color for each of the schools.  The thread that ties all of the schools together is gold.  And yes, we are the golden opportunity for students who chose to learn in our schools.  We are very proud of our excellence and our dedication to student success.

In Initial Phase this week, students have dove into curriculum with both feet!  The teachers are amazed and how far they have come in such a short amount of time.  Remember, to send students with a labeled water bottle and a healthy lunch.  Ensure that students have protein, vegetables, and fruit to choose from.  Make lunch time fun and let your student choose what healthy foods they want in their lunch.

This week, Phase 1 students enjoyed a “Blast from the Past!”  In social studies they learned about how many things have changed over time.  Technology, transportation, and even games are continually changing and improving. In Writer’s Workshop, students are really getting into writing super sentences and exploring their creativity.  In Math, students have started using technology to learn!  Look for information in your student’s folder regarding IXL and how to access it from home.  We are so close to our first Treasure Party!  They have been working hard at following classroom rules and procedures.  Please make sure to send your student with a water bottle every day labeled with their name.  Have a great weekend!

Phase 2 students had a great week.  We are enjoying the books we’re reading in language arts.  Did you know that the books we read in language arts are aligned to our science and social studies standards?  This allows students to learn these concepts in multiple ways and through various methods.   We will be animal and habitat experts very soon!  Phase 2 students are also hard at work in math…please practice those math facts every night!  When students know math facts fluently with speed and accuracy, they are able to better complete more complex problems such as long division and multiplication.

Virginia’s Voice

This has been a very busy but rewarding second week of school.  Discovery and Millennium held their back to school nights.  Some parents may have actually been here all three nights: DHSP, DCS, and MHS were Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights.  I felt all three were very successful.  It was great to see such a huge turnout of parents for each event.  It is my hope that you learned from the experience.  The teachers here are very dedicated and hard working.  They care a great deal about their job as professional educators.  I feel very honored to work with the staff at the Tracy Learning Center.

I am also pleased that each of you has chosen the Tracy Learning Center for your child’s education.  I believe your student is in very good hands.  We are honored to have your students.  We appreciate your support with homework, checking grades, returning folders, and any donations you provide. We still appreciate the $400 donations that families donate each year. This money is extremely helpful and is always put to great use.  We never take you for granted.

I feel very badly for the 700 plus students who remain on our waiting list.  This year we are filled at every grade level.  Some parents have had students on the list for over six years.  I appreciate the difficult job Mrs. Beringer has informing parents that their child is still on the waiting list.  It is not an easy job.  I know she feels delighted to make calls letting parents know their child has finally made the top of the list and is being offered a spot.

I am looking forward to an exciting and academically challenging new school year.  We are all off to a great start.

Primary Charter

Initial Phase this week students have learned what a Polite Citizen looks like, sounds like, and acts like.  Each month we will explore a new character trait (SWO).  Our SWO’s, School Wide Outcomes, help build our campus culture.  Primary’s campus feels unique and this is because of our School Wide Outcome expectations.  It is common for campus visitors to comment about how well behaved and polite all of our students are.

Reminder: If your child has a fever, they must stay home and cannot return until fever free for 24 hours.

Phase 1 students had another wonderful week!  We have jumped right into curriculum in both Math and Language Arts.  In Writers Workshop we have been reviewing parts of speech and writing super sentences.  In Language Arts they are focusing on comprehension skills.  During Math centers, the students learned several fun math games that they can play when their independent work is done.  In Social Studies we spent the whole week learning about our SWOs.  They are ready to earn those bracelets!  The students are really enjoying PE, Art, and Music.  What an exciting week they all had.  Please remember to go through your student’s Green Folder and take out all the work they have done for the week and initial the calendar and return on Monday.

This week Phase 2 students started language arts and math curriculum.  We are impressed with the all of our responsible students who turned in their homework this week.  Keep it up! We are also excited for a whole trimester of science!  This year we will be learning about animals, habitats, endangered species and animal adaptations.  Our Phase 2 students are proving to be great role models and our classrooms are running smoothly, happily, and productively already!  Please remember that students bring their agendas home on Fridays and they need to be signed and returned on Monday.  Thank you!

Discovery Charter

Week two was a success.  Thank you to all of the parents who attended our Back to School Night.  The evening was very enjoyable.  We always look forward to meeting parents and sharing our information.

If you were not able to make it to Back to School Night, we reviewed many things to include:

  • GREAT START TO THE YEAR: All teachers agree, this year seems to be the best ever! Students have come prepared, they are working hard, and they understand and follow class procedures.
  • GRADES: Check Parent Connect (AERIES) to view your child’s up-to-date grades.
  • NO HOMEWORK POLICY: Students who do not complete homework assignments will be given a 0, have a note written in their agendas, and will receive a phone call home. Not completing homework will hurt your child’s grade.  There is no late work. Other information was sent home with your child. If you have questions, please send your child’s teacher an email.
  • BEHAVIOR CHART: Parents/Guardians are able to view their child’s behavior on a daily basis. Agendas will show one of the following: GREEN STAMP – great day (thank you); blue or black writing – warning (no green) this may also result in a call home; orange – repeated behavior that has not been changed OR unacceptable/inappropriate behavior- this will result in a call home; red – referral to the Principal’s office.

HAND OUTS: Copies of any handouts were sent home with your child in a stapled packet if you were unable to attend Back to School Night.  As stated at Back to School Night, please email teachers if you have any questions or concerns at any time:

Ms. Rodieck – lrodeick@tracylc.net; Ms. Pelaez – lpelaez@tracylc.net; Mrs. Beckner – sbeckner@tracylc.net

Mrs. Hawkins – shawkins@tracylc.net; Ms. Zaca – szaca@tracylc.net; Ms. Takeuchi – ttakeuchi@tracylc.net

FRIDAY’S “ALL GREEN” SURPRISE: Today an “ALL GREEN” surprise was given to students as a thank you from teachers for doing such a great job their first two weeks of school.  Any student who had all green stamps in their behavior chart were given cotton candy at the end of the day.  THANK YOU Ms. T and leadership for making our Friday special.

UNITY FUNKY FRIDAY: Our talent today was absolutely amazing!! Ashleigh Garcia and Loren Pante entertained us with their performance.  Ashleigh played the ukulele and both girls sang acapella. Their talent was the first of many to come this year.  Students are encouraged to audition for Unity Funky Friday’s. They can sign up in Ms. T’s room.

Ms. Rodieck’s students are “Soaring Into A New Year.”  They worked hard to create three dimensional hot air balloons, words to live by, and portrait poems while sharing information about their lives.  The students took great care and pride while working on these projects.

Virginia Stewart

Welcome back to school at the Tracy Learning Center.  We are off to a fantastic start.  All of the teachers were more than ready when Monday arrived.  The rooms are in great shape and decorated well.  The curriculum is organized and the “training” of how to act in the classroom has gone very well.  Our students like coming back to school and are already into the swing of learning.

I am particularly proud of the new Kindergarten children who are adjusting well to the demands of being in school.  This is the first year we have had so few children cry when they realized school was everyday.

At DCS I am very pleased with the great transition our fifth graders made from Primary to Discovery.  They are doing a great job of following the schedule, getting homework done, and doing the work expected in class.

DHSP is the new version of PHSA.  Our 7th and 8th grade students are truly showing they are getting ready for high school.  The school is using the nest system of the high school which is called Den points for them.  They are acting so mature and thoughtful as they adjust to the new vision and rules for the classes.  It is delightful.

MHS has a few new teachers who have been welcomed by the students and who are fitting in well.  The students are great and the enrollment is at an all time high.  The high school is our largest school with 516 students.  We are filled at most grade levels with many more inquiry calls coming in to Mrs. Beringer’s office.

Thank you for your great faith in us as the learning environment of choice for your children.  We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to teach your wonderful students!

Misc. Announcements

Primary Charter

This week Initial Phase has learned so many new things! Students have learned how to hang their backpacks, put lunch-boxes away, and find their own carpet square! We are so proud of how hard they are trying. Each week we will see accomplishments such as these and before you know it they will be veteran PCS students.  A special thank you to parents for all of the positive support we have received!

Phase 1 students had a fantastic first week of school!!! All 3 of our Phase 1 classrooms are proud of their accomplishments. They have already learned new things and are excited about what is to come. They have done a wonderful job of learning new schedules, procedures, and classroom rules. We are grateful for all the donations…thank you!!  If you haven’t returned your information packets yet, please make sure you send them in with your student.   Please also check your student’s green folder for further important information.  Continue to be patient with car line….procedures and rules are in place for the safety of your student.  Congratulations on having such an awesome first week!!!

Phase 2 had an awesome first week of school!  We are so proud of our 4th graders who are setting an outstanding example for our 3rd graders!  Our 3rd graders are so eager to learn the rules and procedures All of our students are showing they remember the SWOs and we are excited for a great year.

Third and fourth graders will start using agendas soon to track behavior.  They will take agendas home every Friday to get signed.  If a student gets on warning or yellow, they will have to take their agenda home that day to get it signed.

Thank you to everyone who brought in supplies this week!

Discovery Charter

WELCOME to the 2015-16 school year at Discovery Charter School. The school year has officially begun, and our halls are buzzing with excitement as student’s transition from class-to-class. Students are: learning new routines, working with peers, and meeting new friends.  Already, there is a great sense of accomplishment amongst DCS students, and we, the teachers, could not be happier. THANK YOU for allowing us to teach your children, we feel honored!!

“SAVE THE DATE.” Wednesday, August 12, 2015 is our annual BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT!! We will begin at 5:30 PM in the gym. Parent’s/Guardians, will then follow their child’s core class schedule until 7:00 PM.  Students made an invitation with a “Back to School Night” schedule. If you did not receive your invitation, please ask your child about it, OR simply show up on Wednesday, August 12th at 5:30. Back to School Night is a great way to meet your child’s teachers while learning about your child’s day.  We hope to see you there, we are excited to meet you.

Agendas: Please check your child’s agenda each night. Students write homework in their agendas, and have a calendar page where parents can review daily behavior. Students will have homework each night.

Unity: This morning, Ms. Takeuchi hosted an event where six students, nominated for being “friendly,” were asked to wear blindfolds, and apply make-up to their teacher’s faces.  The activity was fun! Student laughter was contagious, as teachers, including Coach Daniel Easterday, became DCS make-up models.  Ms. T and her leadership team will continue to hold entertaining events throughout the year.

This week, we found new and returning students:

DHSP Charter Chatter:

Welcome Back!!!

What an AMAZING start to the new school year!

Lots of exciting changes happening in the 7th and 8th grade.

We not only have a new name, we have a new attitude.

Back – to – School – Night is next Tuesday, the 11th at 6pm. Parents will follow their students’ schedule when visiting BTSN. We will begin promptly at 6:00 so plan on being in your students’ first academic class at that time. Ask them for their schedules. You will begin with their 3rd period class.

The math classes are off to a great beginning.

All our math levels are higher this year. We even have two high school math classes being taught for the first time ever in the middle school, and both classes are at capacity. How fortunate are we to have the ability to meet the needs of such high achieving students!

Language Arts classes are working on novels, grammar, and mechanics. We expect fantastic writers to emerge from the English department this year. We are fortunate to have Mrs. Stewart, not only teaching one of the English classes, but also leading the department.

Mr. Compton, the new science teacher, has the students exploring, “What is Biology?” Sounds like fun!! They will find out what kinds of careers exist in the field of biology throughout the year.

Social Studies is off and running with a look at our first civilization of the year, The Ottoman Empire. The students are working hard to make correlations between the Ottoman civilization and the world around them. Mrs. Wallace is thrilled to be back in 7th and 8th grade.
