This is the time to be thankful.  We are most thankful for the loyal support we have with our parents.  The students are delightful and successful because of the bond and partnership we have with parents.  In addition, I am grateful for the hard-working and dedicated staff that makes the Tracy Learning Center Schools successful.  Each member of the staff is concerned and caring and wants the best for the students.  I believe this makes us a unique place for learning.  We are a great team of students, parents and staff working for the good of all.  Who could ask for more?

Parent/Teacher conferences were a great success!  Thank you to everyone for taking the time to meet with us.  We are so proud of all the progress each student is making.

This week was busy in the classroom.  We celebrated our November birthdays with our monthly party. Our TK students learned the history of Thanksgiving and about family traditions.  We discussed what each of us is thankful for and our week culminated with our very own Thanksgiving Feast!  We are truly thankful for all the amazing families in our classroom that made this celebration such a success!  We hope you all have a safe, happy, and relaxing holiday week!

Primary Charter

Primary parents:  It’s See’s Candy Fundraiser time!!  Order forms went home today in the green folders.  Orders are due on Tuesday, December 1st.  Thank you for continuing to support our TLC fundraisers!

This week in Primary, teachers and parents met for conferences.  We discussed progress to date, classroom citizenships, and the road ahead.  Many discussions lead to how parents can support learning at home.  We provided many ideas, resources, and tips as to how to create a learning environment at home.  Please remember, the teachers at The Tracy Learning Center are a valuable asset and resource.  Use us to assist in bringing the learning home.  We love to help!

As this week came to a close, Initial Phase students closed our unit on The History of Thanksgiving.  Students learned about Pilgrims, Indians, The Mayflower, and how the Indians helped the Pilgrims.  Each student made a book capturing what we studied in the classroom. Encourage your student to share this book with friends and family over the holiday break.  They worked very hard and are very proud of it.  Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.   We will see you on November 30th!

What a busy, exciting week we had!  Each class in Phase 1 had a wonderful feast!  Thank you so much to all the parent volunteers and donations. We have so much to be thankful for.  Parent Teacher conferences went great!  Thank you to all the parents who were able to meet with us.  It is always nice to get to talk about your student’s progress face to face.  Please continue to read daily over the break.

Phase 2 classes were excited to finish up and show off their final biome projects.  The teachers were so impressed the with creativity.  This project allowed our students to work on their research and technology skills, encouraged cooperation and teamwork and they learned many new interesting facts about their biomes.  We are excited to start our social studies unit when we return from Thanksgiving Break!

Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!!

Virginia’s Voice

The first annual fourth through eighth grade Spelling Bee took place this week.  Mrs. Hawkins with the help of Mrs. Sierra and Ms. Rodieck did an excellent job setting up the rules, the structure and the support for the many students who wished to participate.  It was a wonderful display of the interest in competition and all the students were supportive of those who continued to remain part of the competition as some were eliminated.

I was very impressed.  All of the students who participated were winners.  They all tried, they all cared and they all took the chance to compete.  I feel this way about the many opportunities our students have for competition.  We have students who are preparing to compete in Math tournaments, science Olympiad, Academic Pentathlon, Academic Decathlon, and speech and debate.  These academic competitions are not only good for the schools, they are great for the students who compete.  It allows the students to learn how they fair with other schools and other students who share their interest for academic excellence.

Just as academic competition is worthwhile, so too is sports.  Many of our teams make it to playoffs.  They may not always win at playoffs, but they get to see what the competition is and what they need to do to improve.  Our band also competed for the first time and achieved third place.  It does not mean they are satisfied, but they were pleased and now know what they need to do to improve.

Competition outside the school environment is critical to really know how we stand.  I am pleased with the progress we have made as we take our students to new challenges.  The students feel pride and success and so do we!

AB2706 Health Insurance

By law, most people are now required to have health insurance or pay a penalty when they file their taxes. Through Covered California, a program from the state of California, qualified legal residents of California and their families can compare health insurance plans and enroll in the one that works best for their needs and budget. Financial assistance is available to qualifying individuals and families to help them pay for health insurance premiums. This means the federal government may pay a portion of the health insurance premium. Individuals and families may also qualify for Medi-Cal benefits.

Visit CoveredCA.com to learn more, compare health insurance plans, choose the one that best fits your needs and enroll online. For free, confidential, in-person help, in your area, visit www.CoveredCA.com/get-help/local or call (800) 300-1506.

The open-enrollment period to enroll in Covered California health insurance plans happens once a year. Once the open-enrollment period closes, you may enroll in a Covered California health plan only if you have a qualifying life event that makes you eligible to apply. Some examples of qualifying life events are: losing your health coverage, getting married, moving outside your plan’s coverage area, having a baby and turning 26. To see if you qualify, visit www.coveredca.com/individuals-and-families/getting-covered/special-enrollment. To enroll during this time, you must apply within 60 days of your qualifying life event. For more information and to find free, confidential, in-person help in your area, visit www.CoveredCA.com/get-help/local or call (800) 300-1506.

Undocumented and non-citizen or permanent-resident parents should not fear that applying on behalf of their children or dependents, who may be eligible for health coverage, will result in deportation or other immigration-related actions. Virginia’s Voice

There are two things I would like to remind each of you about one more time.

  1. We have opened a wonderful Pre-K program for students ages 3 and 4. It is either a full time or half day program with extended child care if needed.  The Pre-K program is housed on Grant Line along with our Transitional Kindergarten program.   We will be happy to give a tour to any interested parent.  We are also offering the first month of tuition free.
  2. For the first time, Millennium High School is offering weighted grades for students who enroll in a college class. This means students may enroll in college classes and are ensured college credit for transfer to other colleges, are reimbursed the tuition, and now receive weighted grades for taking the college courses.  It is now possible for students in the high school, who take advantage of dual enrollment, to achieve higher than a 4.0 GPA.

Both the Pre-K and the weighted grades are a response to wishes from parents in the past.  The parents of Primary students have asked, “when will you have a pre-K ?”.  We did not realize it takes a while to make a reputation and achieve the enrollment we are hoping for, but we believe in time we will have a program well known in the community with a waiting list as we do for our Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten program.

Many times parents say they have decided not to continue on to Millennium because they wanted the weighted grades because they felt it was an advantage for getting into college.  We always thought that college transcripts and reimbursed tuition was great and enough…. but now we have decided to give the weighted grades as well.  We now think we have the best offer around.

Finally, I also want to announce that as we begin the planning for the renovations and a new building for our site, that we should put together our committee to start the fund raising for our football field when the buildings are complete in 2020.  Let’s have the 2020 eye site to plan ahead for the football/soccer  field.  I will set aside 20% of all fund raising in each of the schools for this fund.  In addition any donations made to the school will be earmarked for the field as well.  We can do this! We will need approximately 250,000 for a football field, lights, and bleachers.  I will let you know the totals we have collected from time to time to reach this goal.

t was election week down on the TK farm!  Students learned about voting, campaigns, and elections.  They even got their very own voter’s registration card and went to our polling station to cast their vote in a classroom election.  It was exciting to listen to the students discuss their ideas about what makes a good leader and who they should choose.

Reminders:

*Please send an extra set of clothes in a labeled ziplock bag with your child every day in the case of an accident.

DHSP

DHSP Charter Chatter:

The students did great with their first official Rainy Day on Monday!! It finally feels like Fall, and everyone certainly seems to be enjoying the cool, crisp weather. Remember that Wednesday, the 11th is Veterans Day. Hopefully everyone will take time to reflect and honor all of the Veterans and the sacrifices they and their families have made to keep our country a Democracy.

English:

Mrs. Stewart’s English class has been delighted with the book, The Jungle Books.  It appeared to be a child book, but the lessons are excellent and good for everyone.  The book was added to the curriculum to prepare for Pentathlon.  In addition, the class continues to work on writing skills, grammar and debate.  Vocabulary is improving each week as 12 new words are added.  These words are showing up in class presentations, writing and even outside of class!  Most of the students feel the SAT practice is the most difficult, but Mrs. Stewart insists as the students learn grammar and diagramming, it should get easier.  Reading is another challenge.  Students at this level are learning that reading comprehension is more involved that literal answers to questions.  Each month, there is improvement and Mrs. Stewart is pleased with the progress the class is making.

In Mrs. Sierra’s English: We have begun reading The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling and students love it. It was a novel written for Kipling’s children to teach life lessons, such as honesty, betrayal, consequences, and much more. It has provided a gateway to bring up such values in class and gives students the opportunity for self-reflection.

Math:

What a bright group of 7th and 8th graders we have this year. We have been cruising through the curriculum so quickly that I am excited to see what we can accomplish.

Science:       Students had a fantastic time working on and eating their edible cell lab last Friday:

Social Studies: Next week Mrs. Wallace is planning on a special lesson centered around Veterans and the contributions made by them throughout the history of the United States of America.

Art:

Art: Students are excited to start they canvas paintings this week as we begin to wrap up this shuffle group. This group of artist has been a blast to have. They are so creative and on task that we have gotten through so many different projects in just five weeks. Excited to see their final paintings.

Leadership:

Malayan Den received their treat from Menchie’s this Friday for being the Den with the most donations for the McHenry House.

Academic: We now have curriculum! We are currently studying the modern history of India. Students will begin receiving in-class assignments, study material and tests related to pentathlon. We still do not know how many students are allowed per team, but placement will be competitive and grade based.
