Virginia’s  Voice

I recently read an article about ten ways to be successful as a first year college student, but some applies to all students.

Make school your number one job

Learn how to organize and manage your time

Do not study with computers, phones, and in places where others are talking etc.

Treat school like a job, put in 40 hours a week.

Set up a team of people who can help you if you start to do poorly

Adhere to all dates and deadlines

Attend classes regularly and do not arrive late

Stay focused on your goals and do not get distracted by friends.

Choose your friends carefully.  They should share your values

Work to grow academically and personally.

Practice these goals regularly for success. Practice makes you better.

It’s that time of year again- Parent Teacher Conferences are right around the corner!  Look for information to be coming home next week to sign up for a conference time.

This week our TK scientists have been exploring force and motion.  They have done fun experiments with marbles, balloons, cars, bean bags, and a variety of balls.  They used forces to change the position of objects, they made hypotheses about their experiments, and observed and described the results.  We will continue experimenting next week!

Primary Charter

Initial Phase

Initial Phase has an important public safety announcement that we would like parents to take very seriously.

What a tough year with illness.  We have many students coming to school sick.  Our policy is FEVER AND SYMPTOM FREE FOR 24 HOURS BEFORE  RETURNING TO SCHOOL.  This DOES NOT mean fever free with Tylenol or Motrin.  If your student has a fever at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, he/she CANNOT come to school on Wednesday,  even if the fever has subsided, he/she CANNOT return until Thursday.

Parents are the only means we have to ensure that students DO NOT come to school sick.  Please be cautious BEFORE sending your student to school if they do not want to eat, have a constant cough, green or yellow discharge, or just don’t look good. This has been an ongoing issue.  PLEASE DO NOT MEDICATE AND SEND THEM TO SCHOOL.

Currently, we have many students out with Strep Throat.  This is causing high fevers, upset stomachs, pain, and rash.  You know your child best.  Please use your best judgement to ensure the health and

safety of others.

Phase One

Phase 1 students had another amazing learning week! They learned some interesting facts about blue whales and were then able to write an informative letter about why a blue whale couldn’t possibly live in a pond!  In science, the students learned all about the different types of weather and the tools used to measure and predict the weather.  They even got to create a tornado in a bottle!  We are so proud of how many students are reaching their goals in AR.  Keep up the great work!  Parent teacher conferences will be coming up soon.  Please look for information that will be coming home soon.

Phase Two

Our students are becoming experts in all things government!!  Each class has been learning about the history of our government, how the government works, and what it takes to run a country like the United States.  Ask your phase two student to tell you all about it!

Attention 4th grade parents: Save the Date! “Welcome to Discovery Meeting,” Thursday March 10th from 5:30 – 6:30 in the gym..  More details to come!

Look for information from your child’s teachers about parent conferences.  Conference week will be March 14th-17th.

PCS students may wear their pajamas on Wed. Marcy 2 in honor of Dr. Suess’ National Reading Day

Our wonderful Crab Feed Team led by Donna and Tom Baker raised $8,678.93. We are so fortunate to have such amazing volunteers and supportive families at this great school. Thank you!

From Donna Baker

Tracy Learning Center ROCKS!! We did it! Another successful Crab Feed. It is amazing how this event comes together each year.

However it is not possible without the help of so many hardworking people and the generosity of so many companies.

I know that the Tracy Learning Center Crab Feed is getting a reputation of “The Crab Feed to go to”. I know that we will continue to hold that title.

Without the endless hours of help from  Tiffany Alexander, Suzy Davis, Kara Ardenyi, Lisa Keogh, Karen Xuereb, Tracy Pelican, Tina Brown,

Cindy Alton, Lise Houser and Relda Franke, this event would not have come together.

Kudos and thanks to all of the teachers that participated in bartending, ticket sales and donating wine and desserts.

Mrs. Grant and Ms. Holmes you are my Rock Stars! Your leadership is crucial to a smooth running event.

All of the companies that stepped forward and donated such generous items we are grateful. Please see the attached list and support these companies.

So very proud of our Millennium students who served our guests with smiling faces and lovely manners. Our students also gave us a great show on the dance floor.

I am sure you can find it on Facebook.

It is a pleasure to be able to chair this event each year. Oodles of thanks to my one and only husband, Tom who works side by side with me starting in

October to put this event in motion. Tom takes on a zillion roles without complaint.

Looking forward to our future events.

Thank you companies Proofthank you2016 Proof

Thanks a bunch and oodles of hugs.

TK

This week in TK we began an exciting scientific adventure!  We are partnering with MHS and having guest teachers in our classroom.  The teaching staff and ours have been working together on curriculum and we prepared some special activities for the upcoming weeks.  This week as the students have begun learning about scientists, our special guest, Ms. Holmes, came in to share real scientific tools with the students.  She lead them in an engaging lesson which exposed them to beakers, scales, test tubes, microscopes, and safety equipment.  She also shared a dog skeleton, rock samples, and a variety of insect/animal specimens.  The grand finale-creating a potion-was a big hit with our little scientists!  Thank you MHS for working with us to instill the love of science in our students!

Virginia Stewart

Some of you have e-mailed or called about an article found in the paper regarding the potential of an initiative to close all charter schools in California.  The article quoted many facts that are not accurate.  It would take 300,000 registered voter signatures to put the initiative on the ballot and then the initiative would need to win in an election.  While I do not take that lightly, I do not think that it would be that easy to close charter schools. Charter schools exist in states across the nation.  They play a role in public education.  They are an alternative to the established public process.  While charters are not for everyone, they are appreciated and perhaps they serve as a model for others.  Charters have a success rate and according to their charters ( which are agreements with their sponsoring districts) they can only be closed if they are not performing economically or academically.

It is interesting but there is another piece of legislation moving along requesting that after charters have proven themselves over ten years that their renewal be lengthened from a five year span to a fifteen year span.  It seems the two are in direct contradiction to each other.

Of course, we should stay vigilant and always remember that it is a privilege to have charter schools as part of the public school system.  Nothing should ever be taken for granted.

We are 100 days smarter!  TK has reached our 100th day of school today!  It has been exciting to explore the number 100 with our senses.  We compared and contrasted what different items totaling 100 looks like, feels like, and even tastes like as we ate 100 snacks today!  We also had our Valentine’s celebration in class today.  It was a special day celebrating our friends that we have known for 100 days!

Last week we had special visitors at the end of our studies about animals.  We met a hamster, guinea pig, rabbit, turtles, chicks, a rooster, snakes, and a lizard.  Students were so excited to see the animals they had been learning about up close in our classroom!

Primary Charter

– Initial Phase

This week in Initial Phase, students learned about the popular Folk Lore story of The Big Race.  Students learned about how the legendary race helped chose the 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac.  We discussed the story, wrote about the story, created our own monkey illustrations, and make paper lanterns in the traditional color red.  Remember, February 15th is a holiday and we WILL NOT have school.  Finally, remember that good readers become great readers through daily practice.  Encourage students to reread texts sent home, choose and read new books, and listen to a variety of text as often as possible.  Have a great weekend!

Phase One

What a beautiful learning week we had!  This week students received a reply from their pen pals.  They were very excited to hear from them.  We will continue to write letters next week and learn about different kinds of letter writing.  Science was also very exciting.  The students got to perform 2 different experiments as they were introduced to the Scientific Method.  As “scientists” they got form a hypothesis, make observations, and record data.  Next week we will explore the different states of matter.  Students are also adapting well to the “new” math fact timed testing. Great Job! Thank you for helping to make your student’s Valentine’s Day Party so much fun!  They enjoyed eating the treats and being able to pass out valentines to their friends.  Don’t forget Monday is a holiday.  Have a great weekend!

Phase Two

We began the week learning all about Chinese New Year and ended the week celebrating friendship! Thank you to PCS leadership, you did a great job selling candy grams!  Next Friday, all fourth grade students will take the DCS mathematics placement test.  By fourth grade, students should be fluent in addition, subtracting, multiplication and division facts.  Keep practicing and reviewing those facts.  Hard to believe fifth grade is right around the corner!  Have a happy holiday weekend, see you on Tuesday!

English:

Mrs. Stewart’s English class has completed the PSAT8/9 and are looking forward to seeing the results.  We are now on to beginning curriculum that matches some of the work done in AP English classes.  One such topic is genre’s of non fiction and being able to identify them in pieces of writing.  We are now exploring the genre of political cartoons.  The class is doing well since we remain up to date on my current event topics.  We maintain that good writing and reading improves when we are aware of world topics.

We are continuing our work in sentence syntax and are actually debating the syntax of words in complex sentences and diagramming.  Finally Mrs. Stewart is impressed with the projects the students submitted regarding summaries and analysis by theme of the Jungle Books.  She is grading that project now.  Meanwhile, the students have begun reading, The Pearl by John Steinbeck.

Tracy High wins Academic Decathlon

The Tracy High School team finished first overall in the San Joaquin County Academic Decathlon and advances to the state competition.

Posted: Wednesday, February 10, 2016 12:57 pm

By Denise Ellen Rizzo | 0 comments

Tracy High School took top honors at the 35th annual Academic Decathlon, rising above competitors from a dozen county high schools on Saturday.

The two-week competition began Jan. 30 with the speech, interview and essay contests at the San Joaquin County Office of Education before moving to Lathrop High School on Saturday for the art, economics, literature, mathematics, music, science and social science tests. The final phase of the competition was the public Super Quiz on the theme of India.

As the overall team winner, the Tracy High team was presented with the Dave Sorgent Winner’s Cup. Tracy High will represent the county at the state championship in Sacramento in March.

Second place was awarded to Middle College High of Lodi, followed by Manteca High in third.

In the Super Quiz, Tracy took command of the competition, tying for first with Manteca High School. Middle College High of Lodi placed second, and Millennium High School came in third.

Taking top individual honors with the highest overall combined score on the 10 tests was Hamza Raniwala of Tracy High School, who received the $1,000 Walter Rathhaus Award.

Raniwala also placed first overall in the honors division, followed by teammate Surya Nehra in second place. In the scholastic division, Tracy’s Ayman Baydoun and Joshua Blomgren placed first and third. Daniel Wirtley had the third highest individual score in the varsity division. They were recognized with medals, certificates and scholarships ranging from $100 to $500. Divisions are based on GPA.

Millennium High had four students who won first place in their divisions — Dela Alocaste in essay, Amy Wise in speech and J.T. Amador and Joseph Gudino in interview — as well as numerous other individual medals.

The team from West High School took third place in the club division. Mountain House High School was named the most improved team. Kimball High School did not have a team competing this year.

Virginia Stewart

This is National Counselor Week.  It is a great time to dedicate this Virginia Voice to praise our counselors.  We have two high school counselors who serve many different roles for us that go beyond what regular school counselors usually do.  I am very proud of the services they offer.  Just think and thank them for things they do here:

Coordinate community service opportunities and track hours

Find internship opportunities and coordinate internships for all seniors

Support students as they work to achieve scholarship information

and win scholarships

Work with me to meet with each high school student to review progress

Mentor students who are not doing well academically

Support students with 504 plans (regardless of the grade level)

Counsel students with social issues or concerns

Coordinate efforts for PSAT and SAT testing

Coordinate work done on the standardized tests we use for math

Plan and implement the Falcon Flight School for Freshmen

I could continue to list things the counselors do, but this list helps all of us realize how vital they are to the work done in our schools.  I am grateful for their support and help.  I am also grateful for their assistant, Stephanie Arganbright. We could not be as successful without them.

In Science we have been exploring the habitats of all the animals we learned about last week.  We have gone on a safari, swam through the layers of the ocean, swung on vines in the rainforest, and braved the cold of the arctic. We even made a book to document our ‘journey’.   Today we had special visitors come to our school.  We had a petting zoo in our classroom!  Ask your child what animals they got to see, learn about, and touch.

Primary Charter

In Initial phase this week, we are talking a lot about being a Positive Cooperator.  At this age, students are exploring how to exist in social situations.  We work hard to develop a community within our classroom that helps students learn how to work well with others, use their words, and personal awareness.  We have many systems in place to help students learn how to become a Positive Cooperator.  For instance, our Excellence Bowl system, recognizes students who demonstrate act of respect and kindness, our Gold Star is reserved for instances above and beyond common expectations, and one on one and class discussions help our students learn about this important character trait.  Encourage your students to be a Positive cooperator in all aspect of their day and you will see a child who truly shines!

Phase 1 students had a great time visiting the other classrooms and getting a chance to see each other’s businesses.  We saw some very creative work.  We could tell the students put a lot of thought and hard work into creating and designing their business.  Each class voted for their favorite one.  We also received our Pen Pal letters and got to read them during Writer’s Workshop.   Next week we will write back to our Pen Pals and answer some of their great questions.  Some students made predictions about whether the groundhog will see its shadow.  We were right!!  Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow….spring is coming early!  Many students are close to their AR Goals!  Keep up the great work!  Our new math fact testing went great.  Continue to practice those facts each night. Have a great weekend!

Phase 2 students are becoming experts on history and government!  We are reading and writing about American heroes and people who have made a difference in our country.  Some groups are even reading about and discussing the Civil War.  We are also learning about the constitution and presidents.  Our students love that the books we read in language arts are the same things we are learning about in social studies.  And we love seeing them get excited about it!

Congratulations to our Discovery Charter, the charter was renewed by the sponsoring district, Tracy Unified for the next five years.  It is necessary for charters to rewrite the charter and to update it to current laws and submit it for renewal.  The two main reasons for renewal consideration are student performance, and fiscal soundness.  Discovery is very strong in both areas.

As we begin to make plans and goals for the new school year, please e-mail me if you have suggestions for improving our schools.  We write a document each year called the LCAP which identifies areas for student improvement before we develop the adopted budget for the new school year.  We would be happy to hear your suggestions for things we could add, or for things you feel we are doing well that we should continue to do.  My e-mail address is vstewart@tacylc.net.

This week in Initial Phase students have been exploring living and non living things.  We have taken nature walks, classified, explored on the internet, and even charted some items.  This week many students also became authors!  We brainstormed characters, settings, problems, and solutions and then they took off and write their own stories.  Each day individual students meet one on one with a teacher for a mini writing conference to ensure that students included all necessary parts of a story.  We are compiling a classroom library full of their amazing stories so everyone can enjoy their work.

A few reminders: label all clothing, send in healthy lunches, and always check the forecast and dress students accordingly.

Another great learning week in Phase 1! The students are having a great time planning, designing, and developing their very own business.  Selling products and services involves a lot of strategies!  Next week they are looking forward to presenting their businesses to the other phase 1 classes.  Phase 1 students also began writing their pen pal letters.  They learned a fun song to help them remember all the parts of a letter.  Ask them to sing it to you!  We have been keeping track of how many days we have been in school.  We do lots of math problems involving that number.  We identify place values, solve number puzzles, write it in expanded notation, compare numbers, and so much more.

Phase 2 students are continuing to work on their writing skills.  We are doing expository writing with research, narrative writing, poetry, and learning about different writing techniques like writing similes, hyperboles, and idioms.  We have some very creative writers!  Please make sure your child is always working on math facts!  We would love for all 3rd and 4th graders to know their multiplication and division facts fluently with speed and accuracy.  Quiz them and let them show off what they know!

Friday’s unity was filled with entertainment!!!  Our dance class performed this morning, they were sensational as they moved to the beats of their song.  Throughout the Exploration time, they have worked together to create the dance.  The dance is totally student driven, choreographed, and performed.  In addition to the dance, we were entertained by great singers Silvana, Greta, and Lisette.

Math:

The math classes are doing well. It is exciting to see students grasping these very important concepts. The classes took The Davis Test tis week.

Social Studies:

Students are busy deciding which of four West African Empires to base their spring project on. Lots of excitement is happening in the social Studies room.

The focus is on the Empires of Ghana, Mali, Songhai, and Oyo. Everyone is learning lots of interesting things.

English:

Mrs. Stewart’s class has completed Book One of the Jungle Books and has started a project that is theme related concerning each of the seven short stories included in the first book.  The students have also completed the second phase of their SWO.  They have identified sources they will use and have developed a Works Cited page with annotations using the MLA format for web sources.  The class took take PSAT on January 25.  While, Mrs. Stewart realizes they are only in 7th and 8th grade, it is a great time to see how the advanced students will do on the PSAT.  They will have at least two more chances to take this test again, The good part is it gives a base for improvement and the students will start getting mail from colleges as a result of this experience.

Mrs. Stewart and the counseling staff have started to meet with students for their annual counseling review.  Fast track classes and next year’s schedule will be planned.  Only 10th grade parents will be invited for an appointment. Letters detailing the scheduled 10th grade appointment times should have been received earlier in the month.  Time is extremely limited and we encourage 10th grade parents to rearrange schedules as necessary to attend their scheduled time.

Give Every Child Chance – 3rd Annual Health Careers Forum

A  Health Careers Forum is being organized between the EMP and Doctors Hospital of Manteca for February 8th 2016. The way this event came about was due to the high interested number of students in the health field and not enough job shadow opportunities. HIPPA regulations are very tight and therefore make it difficult for our students to sit in on patient care, visits, etc. PowerPoint presentations, Speakers and flyers will be given to students by professionals in the field. This event is for the first 40 interested students. Recruitment remains focused with the health ROP classes within the high school, but any student that has a great interest in the medical field is welcomed to summit their application. Applications are available from the counseling office.

An Important Message from TLC…

logo

The safety of our staff and students is extremely important to us at TLC.  We have received several inquiries about the police log posting in Tracy Press.  It talks about text messages that were being forwarded among students last week regarding violence at Millennium.  The police investigated the claim last week.  They visited the student’s house, spoke with the student and their parents.  Our executive director also met with the student and their parents.  The police felt it did not warrant any further action and that our campus was not in any danger.

While this has passed, we still have some students and parents with concerns.  We do not have any more information at this time and the Tracy Police Department are no longer investigating the text messages but we always encourage parents to contact our front office if you ever have any questions at  209 831 5240.
