Virginia’s Voice

We wish you a great spring break.  Thank you to all of the Primary parents who attended conferences to learn about their student’s progress.

As an update to enrollment, we are happy to announce that 85% of our Discovery 8th graders will be staying here to attend Millennium High School.  The TK program has full enrollment and is accepting students for the waiting list.  The good news is that two children on the K waiting list actually were accepted.  Unfortunately, the K waiting list is very long.  Thirty students were accepted from the 4th grade waiting list for 5th grade next year.  We still have openings for 2, 3 and 4 year olds in our preschool program.

Recently a parent commented about our extra five weeks of school.  Her surprise was that she did not know that we are not compensated for the extra time.  We use the money allocated for the school year of 180 days to pay for the 205 day school year we offer our students.  It is amazing how far funds for schools can go when priorities are set.  We know that the extra days are a benefit to children that make a significant difference in their learning.

On another note, we recently reviewed our lunch program with our TC board.  They were surprised to find out that in addition to the money received for lunches, we serve over 200 children with free or reduced lunch prices.  This too, comes from our general fund since we do not have a significant number of children for the free lunch to qualify for federal funds.  The cost of the personnel for our Kitchen staff far exceeds the price we charge for lunches.  To offer our lunch and after and before school care program, we contribute approximately $250,000 of our general fund budget to support the program.  By the way, that is not unusual. Most districts have to help support their lunch program.  We believe ours is an excellent service and program for our students.

Thank you for your continued support of our schools.  We appreciate your loyalty and support.

TK

This week has been a busy week in TK!  We met with all of our amazing families and had successful parent teacher conferences.  The students are making great progress with the help and partnership we have been able to create with such supportive families.  Thank you for everything you do.

On Thursday there was Leprechaun on the loose in our classroom!  He was a mischievous little guy and played some tricks on us, but in the end we found his pot of gold.   On fun Friday we had an Egg hunt on our playground and celebrated the beginning of spring!  We hope you all have a wonderful spring break and we will see you on April 4!

Primary Charter

This week in Initial Phase parents and teachers had the opportunity to meet and discuss students’ academic growth, successes, and behaviors.  The P-6 teachers would like to thank our AMAZING parents for their partnership, collaboration, and communication with us this year.  It has been a wonderful year!  This partnership helps us build a strong academic and behavioral foundation for our students that will ensure they have the best academic career!  WE CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH for all of the kind words, gratitude, and support.  Have a safe and well deserved break!

What an exciting week Phase 1 students had!  Thank you to all the parents that donated eggs for our Easter egg hunt.  The kids had a great time!  We learned all about spring, enjoyed some special treats, and completed some amazing projects. Our classrooms also had visits from tricky little leprechauns. They certainly got into a lot of mischief and made plenty of messes!  Parent-Teacher conferences went very well.  Thank you for taking the time to meet with the teachers.  Please continue to communicate any questions or concerns.  Email is the best way to keep in contact, and remember to email all of your student’s classroom teachers.   Have a relaxing and safe spring break.  Please enjoy the time off but remember to keep reading daily and practice those math facts.  See you in 2 weeks when school resumes on Monday April 4th.

All phases two teachers would like to thank you for meeting with us this week. We truly appreciate the time you took to meet with your child’s teacher(s). Please follow up with the teachers of you have any other questions or concerns. Have a wonderful break! We look forward to an incredible trimester three. We are thankful for our extended school year- we still have a lot of learning and growing left to do!

Virginia’s Voice

We will soon be approaching Spring break.  I believe most students enjoy the two week break in the spring.  We find that the second trimester is the longest with all of the holiday breaks.  It went from November to March!  Then it will be on to the final push for the end of the year.

The one thing I have always liked about our charter schools is that I never feel we rush to finish.  After the high school completes its 180 day traditional calendar, they experience a wonderful opportunity called FAST TRACK in which students are allowed to make up a course or advance to get ahead.  Some are given the chance to take college courses.

The rest of our schools, Primary and Discovery continue on for an additional 5 weeks of instruction.  We believe this gives us a chance to help student truly master the concepts and skills we have presented over the course of the year.  It gives us time to really finish out the year.  We do not feel rushed or frustrated that we do not have enough time.

Then, the month long break between years is another bonus.  Students come back refreshed but they have not forgotten what they have learned and the transition into the new year does not require a month of review.

While some may grumble about the longer day and the longer year, we believe it is the greatest gift we can give our students.

A major component of the Transitional Kindergarten program is to help students grow socially and emotionally.  Our students are learning how to be good friends, to use good manners, to be respectful and listen to adults other than family members, how to regulate their emotions, and how to be patient.

These skills not only help them grow as individuals, but also paves the way for students to be successful students.  TK students have been earning SWOs all year and will be ready to exhibit these positive character traits as they enter Primary in the fall.  We are so excited to see how much the students have grown so far this year and cannot wait to discuss this progress with you at our parent teacher conferences.  Please notify the teachers as soon as possible if you will not be able to attend.

Primary Charter

Initial Phase

In Initial Phase students have been busy reviewing!  We have had a lot of fun with rhyming, past sight words, rereading past books, building with flat shapes to make 3D shapes, and writing.  Spiraling back on past concepts is a great way to really show off what we know.  As the rainy weather continues, please dress students accordingly.  Rain boots, rain jackets, and long pants are a great way to ensure that your student stays dry.  Next week is conferences.  If you have misplaced your date and time, email the teachers.  Have a great weekend.

Phase One

Phase 1 students had another week full of learning and reviewing.  In Science they learned about personification and what it means for March to come in like a lion and go out like a lamb.  Students learned about spring, made spring crafts, and explored more about weather.  In Writer’s Workshop they finished their final draft of persuasive writing.  What amazing writers we have!  Many students reached their AR goal and celebrated with fun prizes and activities. Congratulations! Keep reading…Better readers make better writers. Other students took part in a vocabulary challenge and spelling bee.  Congratulations to the winners.  We are looking forward to Parent-Teacher Conferences next week.  Please email your student’s teacher if you will not be able to keep your assigned time.  Have a great weekend.

Phase Two

The teachers are very eager to meet with you next week to discuss the progress your child has made this trimester.  We have had many great learning days since November and are very proud of how much our Phase Two students have grown!  If you cannot attend your scheduled conference, please contact your child’s teachers ASAP.

Yesterday’s “Into to DCS” meeting was very informative. Our 4th grade students are getting very excited about making the transition from Primary to Discovery.  They are especially excited about science camp and switching classrooms!  If you have any questions, please feel free to discuss them next week at your parent conference.

Mrs. Stewart’s English 78 is wrapping up a long second trimester with the final phase of our SWO project. Students did three drafts of their research paper, they then prepared an oral presentation of their findings.  She is very proud of the work the students have done and the presentations are quite good.  The class will do one more research paper next trimester.  The students have finished reading The Pearl and are preparing for a video project related to that novel.

Mrs. Dominguez’s Math classes:

In Geometry, we have been diving into proportions and ratios, which can all be related to real life problems. It has been fun trying to find the wingspan of an airplane or the actual distance between two cities on a map.

In Algebra 1, we are constantly graphing lines all through a variety of activities in our interactive notebooks. Students have been able to “Kill Zombies” and distinguish different methods for graphing equations. It has been a bit messy and sticky, but the interactive notebooks have proved to be fun, but is also enhancing the learning of our kinesthetic and visual learners.

Leadership is currently taking on a job of helping one of our MHS students with their Falcon Project. We as a class are collecting all of the campus recycling to turn in to help this students raise money for building foster kids backpacks. $15 fills a backpack for these children that often do not have much. If you would like to help support this cause you can email Mrs. Dominguez for more information.

Virginia’s Voice

We are very pleased with the work Mrs. Beringer did this last month, processing applications for enrollment.  February is a very busy month.  I would like to let you know the results of our February enrollment.

We have openings remaining in the Pre-School for August.  This program is for students ages 2.5 to 4.

We received 178 applications for Kindergarten.  Unfortunately we can only take 66 students.  Since Transitional Kindergarten is now part of the Primary program, they have first priority for Kindergarten.  There are 33 of these students.  Siblings are next in priority and we had 33.  That unfortunately filled Kindergarten.  We did have a public lottery for the first 25 spots on the waiting list.  We are so sorry we cannot take more children.  We are limited by the space we have available and the charter we have with the Tracy Unified District.  We are not allowed to expand.  There are 112 on the Kindergarten waiting list.

Transitonal Kindergarten received 23 applications.  All were accepted for enrollment and there are 10 openings left.

140 letters were sent confirming enrollment into the high school for our Freshmen class. If all accept and take the placement test, we will begin a waiting list for Millennium.

30 students were called from the waiting list to enter fifth grade next year.  Many have been on the waiting list for four years and were excited to be called.  (This occurred because we have thirty more spaces in fifth grade then we do in fourth.)

Please know, we appreciate all of your interest in our schools and the wonderful things many of you share about your schools with your friends.  Word of mouth from our families is our best advertisement.

Parent Teacher Conferences are just around the corner!  Please turn in your conference sheets as soon as possible.  We are looking forward to sitting down with you and discussing your child’s progress!
Science was exciting this week as we continued our partnership with MHS and their super scientists!  Our TK students loved exploring density, learning about oxygen, and seeing the results of common objects placed into liquid nitrogen.

Primary Charter

Initial Phase

This week was filled with so much rhyming fun!  Dr. Seuss’ birthday was packed with writing, reading, rhyming, and identifying rhyming words.  Students enjoyed reading with a buddy in the sunshine and have asked to do it again!
Our new SWO this month is Proud Individual.  As you are reading, practicing sight words and spelling words, and practicing math facts talk to your student about the importance of trying their best, producing neat work, and pride with their finished product.
We practice this everyday in P-6 and with your collaboration at home, we are sure to produce many proud individuals!

Phase One

Phase 1 students had a lot of fun in Science learning more about weather and the water cycle.  They learned about why there are different seasons and even that clouds have different names.  In Writer’s Workshop, students are using their creative skills to write persuasive letters.  We are learning there are lots of reasons to have a pet!  We celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday by doing some fun activities. We got to read books with reading buddies from a different classroom. We have fun in our pajamas talking about the different books and about lessons that we learned.  We agree that Dr. Seuss was an excellent author. Parent –Teacher conferences will be coming up soon.  Please check your student’s folder for your appointment times.  Have a great weekend.

Phase Two

Last Friday, Mrs. Doss’ language arts groups put on a mini wax-museum. They did a wonderful job dressing up and role playing various heroes from the past, such as Gandhi, Amelia Earhart, Fredrick Douglas, Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Sandra Day O’Connor, Rosa Parks, Jane Goodall, Marie Curie, Abraham Lincoln, Florence Nightingale, and John Muir.  We applaud their effort, they worked hard and it paid off–we all learned a lot about each hero!

A treat from DHSP.  On Wednesday, dancers from DHSP entertained students during unity with their performance of an African Cultural dance. It was amazing. We were then invited to attend a presentation of “Africa at DHSP” on Wednesday and Friday. Colorful boards, great presentations, and an entertaining dance troupe amazed DCS students.  6th graders are very excited about what they saw and are excited to join DHSP next year as 7th graders.
