The Drama Department is now presenting their spring production.  Peter Pan is a family delight worth attending.  The sets are great, and there is a high energy level among the players.  Captain Hook is very entertaining!  The play was a fun experience for the audience the night I attended.  The players have put in long hours and the work is obvious. Speaking of entertaining, please return to the gym next Monday Night to see four awesome, energetic and fun High School student performers  at the MHS “Open Mike Night” and enjoy a few good laughs. All proceeds will go to the 2016 Graduating Class. Tickets are $5. each and  the show begins at 4:30pm. Concessions will be sold. Please come and support them!

Our Preschool held a ribbon cutting ceremony last week.  The City Council and the Mayor were pleased to welcome a new business into Tracy.  We are pleased we are able to provide high quality child care, excellent academic and social development, and nutritious meals all for a flat fee per month of $550.  This fee includes any combination of times.  The city dignitaries agreed with us that child care for the young working parents is difficult because of the cost and was pleased with the pay structure we are providing.  For more details call (209)229-1575.

T K

TK had special guest visitors last week! We are so thankful that Coach KV and Coach Caldwell from PCS joined our classroom for a lesson!  TK students have been learning about food groups and healthy eating. We have been exploring healthy living, including things like exercise, hygiene, and good choices. The Coaches helped students play a game that incorporated healthy food choices and exercise! It was so much fun!!! Our students can’t wait to work with you next year when they’re in Kindergarten!

Have you heard about TLC’s Family Fun Day?!?  We are excited to tell you that the TK class will be performing at the event!  We are asking students to meet with the teachers at 12:15 to line up and prepare for our performance.  We will send home more information and a reminder next week.  The day is shaping up to be a wonderful family day and we hope to see you all there.

Virginia Stewart

As the Director, one of the things I love best about my job is continuing to teach students.  As many of you know, I teach an advanced 5/6 math class, an advanced 7/8 English class and I read once a week to our wonderful Kindergartners. Each class has brought me new insights, creative ideas for teaching and a way to model to our  teachers ways that I find successful as a teacher.  I believe it also keeps me very aware of the needs of our students.

That being said, I would like to brag about three great things that happened this week.  The WASC committee came to visit or high school for a mid-cycle review to see how well they were doing.  The review was very favorable and the committee was very impressed with many aspects of our high school program.  Such things as student respect, after school sports and the band, college class opportunities, internship were just a few of what they had to say.

The second best thing was that the 5/6 graders had two teams at the County Math Tournament last Saturday.  They competed with twenty four other teams around the county.  Discovery’s two teams placed first and third in the tournament.  We were all very proud.  The team was supported by staff and parents who attended and supported the tournament and made it a very special day.

Finally, thanks to great coordination on the part of Mrs. Hawkins and great contributions from our parents, our 5/6 and 7/8 students had the opportunity to experience public transportation and the chance to see the new movie version of The Jungle Book.  That is the book we have been reading for quite some time and is the book earmarked for the Academic Competition for grades 6, 7 and 8.  Again thanks to the parents who volunteered to help monitor the trip for 5/6.

Misc. Announcements

The MHS Speech and Debate team is hosting a symposium on public speaking, April 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The kids on the team put this event together themselves because they wanted to share the joy they experienced in their first season of competitive speech and debate, and I’m very proud of their vision and effort. We have such terrific students.

This is a wonderful opportunity for newbies and veterans of the speech world alike to network and learn firsthand from professionals the benefits of speech and debate to their future. Guest speakers are from Livermore Labs, Toastmasters, and the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s office.  Topics covered will be perceptions of speech and debate; stumbling blocks to success in public speaking; and how public speaking prepares students for college and careers.  Please see flyer below.

Phase One

Phase 1 students had an awesome field trip to the WOW museum on Tuesday!!  They learned a lot about traits in the science lab and got to explore many interesting science activities.  It was a fun and exciting experience.  In Writer’s Workshop, students are having fun writing letters to each other, asking for and giving advice.  Some students are continuing to perfect their paragraphs.  In Science, we they learned all about the life cycle of a butterfly.  We have caterpillars in our classroom and are observing and recording the changes daily.  Soon we will have butterflies.  The students are so excited to see the complete metamorphosis!  Make sure to check green folders for all the fun and exciting things coming up at TLC.

The final trimester is underway.  Our students in grades TK to 8 have eleven weeks of school left.  We all have a lot to do to finish the year well.  There will be state testing, projects, promotion for grade 8 and many other important events such as the Talent Show tonight, and festivities for the high school.  Yes, they only have until May 21 for graduation.  Then high school goes into FAST TRACK mode.

Schools are busy places and sometimes we are so busy we forget to say thank you for all the things many of you do to support our schools by volunteering time and talents to help us.  We also appreciate your support in the community when you let others know how very exciting things are in our schools.

Recently, as I have begun interviewing for teachers for new positions we have open for next year, I am delighted to realize that some of those we are interviewing are “returning students” who have graduated from Millennium and now want to begin teaching.  What better compliment could we receive than to know we have graduates who understand our system and want to be a part of it.

Welcome back to school! We hope you all had a wonderful spring break. All of the students came back refreshed and eager to learn. Before we left for break, the students were learning about the butterfly lifecycle. They were all looking forward to seeing our butterflies when they returned! We had six butterflies that were released to live in nature. It was so much fun watching them grow and change.

Please remember to send a water bottle to school every day with your child, especially as the weather is getting warmer.

DHSP

                      DHSP Charter Chatter:

English:

Mrs. Stewart’s English 78 class is now into the final trimester.  There are several goals for this trimester:

We will complete the reading of Jungle Book. Students are producing their version of The Pearl as a movie.  The students have studied several pieces of literature from India.  They are expected to master 420 vocabulary words, which they have been given over the course of the year.  In addition, they continue diagramming from both literature and non fiction. The final read will be Shakespeare’s Othello.  Finally students will be working on public speaking as well as writing.  There will be many assignments attached to a selected speech that will be assigned to each student.  The year will culminate with a parent night of demonstrations and portfolio assessment.  Lots to do, and only twelve weeks left!!!

Ms. Langston’s class is off to a very productive start with our new (and last!) trimester. This month, we will be learning new vocabulary from the NY Times; learning strategies to construct a strong essay; starting new books (The Jungle Book 2 and The Gathering Blue); conjugating regular and irregular verbs; and brushing up on our diagramming. We have a lot to look forward to this trimester!

This week Mrs. Ramirez’s class has been reviewing author’s purpose in all 3 periods. Every text is written with a purpose, either to entertain, inform or persuade. Kids will form groups of 3, create a poster with magazine cut-outs for each purpose and present. Kids came back from spring break energized and ready to learn!

Social Studies:

Mrs. Wallace’s Social Studies classes are taking a month long look into India.
