As we focus on finishing the school year for our K-8th grade students, I want to share a few thoughts.

Much research has gone into realizing that a long time off in the summer is detrimental to learning.

I am grateful we have a shorter summer. I know that it has improved learning.  I also know it is hard for our students to feel good about being here when others are out of school…..BUT I know how easily bored the students get once they are out of school.  It is important that we keep our students engaged in learning for the month of June.  Our teachers are prepared to teach and they expect students to continue to focus and learn.

Research has also concluded that how students do in middle school has a great deal to do with how well students do in high school.

It is important that students have good study and homework habits.  Missing assignments is the number one way students fail a class.  Good homework habits are essential for success.

Research indicates that the more students are involved in activities at school the more connected they are to teachers and school itself.

Student need to realize school is academic and social.  There are activities they can be a part of that help bond them to teachers and each other.  Encourage your students to be involved in spirit days, special events and do not let the spirit die in 7th or 8th grade.  Those students often act like it is not cool t be spirited… but it is.

Research indicates that taking advantage of educational opportunities is a great way to get ahead and to learn more.

Students should be involved in spelling Bees, pentathlons, math contests, science Olympiad and other such events that give them a chance to compete with other schools and to see how they do against outside competition.  Community service is another great way to apply skills.

Social Media Postings

Recently we have been informed by both students and parents of mean and insulting social media posts on sites like KIK, Snap Chat and Facebook and personal texts. Students have come to the office crying and have asked the administration to intervene. The office has spent a lot of time investigating and calling in students asking them to stop. The majority of students spoken to have denied any involvement. We also find many of this insults go back and forth between “clicks” or groups of friends and is rarely one sided. Answering these insults back only fuels this situation.

On Friday,  an announcement was made  to all of our 7th/8th Grade students telling them they must report to their parents about any posting or cyber bullying so that their parents can inform the Police Department if they feel this is necessary. We also encourage all parents to supervise their child’s internet use and have all social sites password to protect their children. Although we are very sad this is happening it can no longer be a school issue. Please talk to your children openly and discourage them from using these social sites.

This week in science has been filled with energy! Our little scientists have been learning all about heat, light, and sound energy. We also learned fun facts about the sun, did experiments with light and shade, used friction to create heat energy, and did a crayon experiment. TK students love forming hypotheses and observing data and results. They extended science on their own and had fun applying their new energy knowledge while playing outside at recess!

Initial Phase

Do not forget, Thursday, June 2, 2016 is our field trip to Stockton Children’s museum.  If you have not sent in your donation, please send it in as soon as possible.

This field trip is a culminating activity that allows students to explore many different aspects of the community helpers and community buildings we have been studying. We are excited and cannot wait!

Phase One

What another fabulous learning week for phase 1!  The end of the school year is coming quickly, but phase 1 students are still hard at work.  In science we learned more about gravity and simple machines.  Next week we will be starting our in-class Trimester 3 project.  The students will be working to build a game that includes force, motion, friction, simple machines, and gravity.  We are looking forward to seeing their creativity!  In Writer’s Workshop students are continuing their work on their informative writing.  We can’t wait to read the finished products.  Continue to read and practice those math facts.  There are many activities coming up soon.  Please check your student’s folder for more information.  Have a safe and relaxing Memorial Day Weekend!

Phase Two

Congratulations to all Phase Two students!! Testing is over and all of you did an amazing job of staying focused and trying your best.  We hope you enjoyed your well-deserved ice cream treat.  Now, we anxiously await the results!

If you checked out books from the local library during a school visit, please remember to return them or renew them on your own.  The librarians were very complementary to all three classes about how respectful our students were after each visit.  Great job representing Primary Charter School!!!

Mrs. Stewart’s English 78 has completed round one of famous speeches.  They were great, we learned so much from the speeches that were delivered and actually got a great sense of history.

We are now reading Othello as a mature audience and are getting interested in the plot. Acts are being played out in class after they are read.

We are doing the final review of the 420 vocabulary words we have mastered this year.

SWO: The last SWO of the year is under way. It is Self-Directed Learner. The students are writing or updating a business letter and resume. Final copies are due June 10, 2016

Academics class has already begun to learn about WWII, which is next year’s topic for Pentathlon.

With only four weeks of school left there is much to accomplish and teach in every class. This time of year can be difficult for many students who may feel the year is over. Appropriate behavior is expected at all times.  We appreciate your help with maintaining high standards.

Today marks the end of the high school year and the start of a special opportunity we present to all high school students, FAST TRACK.  FAST TRACK is an opportunity to take a full year’s course in five weeks.  Students attend class for four hours a day for five weeks.  Each hour is a day.  It is intense but staff and students love it.  The students are able to advance or make up a class in which they did not do well. The staff appreciates the chance to work with a small group of students for the five weeks and everyone benefits.

The high school does not receive any extra income for this; we use our general fund budget that other schools use for their regular 180 days.  It is possible to do more with money allocated.  In fact, the additional five weeks for Primary and Discovery are also at our own expense.  We are not allotted more for the extra hours or days we give our students.  We do know, however, that all of our students benefit from the extra time.

It is also volunteer appreciation this week.  The kitchen served a beautiful buffet for our volunteers at both of our sites. (Preschool and TK) as well as at Primary.  We really do appreciate all the support and help we receive from volunteers.  You do make a difference.

Finally, I appreciate he most dedicated and hard working staff any director could ever have.  We are all fortunate to have such a great staff here at TLC!

.

I just attended the annual high school awards ceremony.  It is always a wonderful time to celebrate scholarships, acceptance to colleges and outstanding students.  This year seemed to be more wonderful than usual.  Our students accomplished wonderful things.  I appreciate the high school staff and the counselors who mentor students and support them in their quest for scholarship and awards.

While driving home the other day I heard a statistic that shocked me.  Every 26 seconds a student drops out of high school in the United States.  That adds up to 7000 students a day or 1.3 million per year.  While all of our students may not achieve an award at the ceremony, I felt very proud that we do not have high school drop outs.  For some, we may offer a fifth year, but they all graduate.  I am very proud of that.  I believe that is possible due to the commitment of our staff and the small personal caring environment of our campus.

So, congratulations to each Senior of the Class of 2016 who has earned a diploma and has an opportunity to move forward in being a productive member of our society.  We look forward to their accomplishments.

The weather has been warming up this week!  In PE students got to practice team building skills and cooperation while playing with water balloons.  They did a great job working together!  Please remember to send a water bottle to school with your child every day, especially as it is heating up outside.

We will be taking a field trip soon!  Watch for information in your student’s red folder on Monday.

Initial Phase

This week in Initial Phase students participated in their first ever TLC Jog-a-Thon!  What an amazing, fun event!  We were so impressed with the amount of parent and teacher support, student participation, and pledges received.  Our coaches will spend the next few weeks calculating the pledges received and announce our winners at a Primary Unity assembly.  Stay tuned.

Don’t forget, May 20 is our volunteer appreciation breakfast.  If you received an invitation, we hope to see you there!

Phase One

What an awesome week Phase 1 students had!!  The Jog-A-Thon was a huge success and the kids had so much fun!  We have some really great runners and spirit in our Primary Classrooms.  Thank you so much for all the sponsors. The excitement was just as awesome in the classroom.  In Science this week, students learned all about sound.  They got to experiment with pitch, volume, and vibration with all kinds of instruments, including a gong, bongo drums, coke bottles, guitars, pitch pipes, and many other sound makers!  In all subjects we are really working on our academic language and being able to give complete answers.  We are really impressed with the progress we have seen in both reading and math.  Keep up the great work!  Congratulations to the silent auction winners.  The teachers are looking forward to an evening with the students in the classroom!  Have a great weekend!

Phase Two

Thank you to all who have donated items toward our breakfast testing snack!  Testing will begin promptly at 8:30 on the following days: May 17th, 18th, 19th and will continue the following week on May 24th, 25th and 26th.  Our students are looking forward to showing what they know!

The jog-a-thon was a huge success!  The weather was perfect, the kids were enthusiastic, and the volunteers were beyond helpful.  Thank you!  Speaking of volunteers, if you volunteered in any capacity this school year, please join us for a Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on Friday, May 20th immediately following unity.  We appreciate your dedication and would like to recognize you for your efforts.  Hope to see you there!

We had a fun surprise this week celebrating Cinco de Mayo.  Our snack club teacher, Ms. Alma, brought her daughter-Primary student Isabella Posadas- to dance a traditional Mexican dance for us.  Our TK students loved learning first hand about this holiday and the Mexican culture.

We hope everyone has a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend!

Phase One

Phase 1 students had blast learning about fossils this week.  They got to be paleontologists and go on an excavation, digging for fossils and artifacts.  They were able to see and hold real fossils like sharks teeth, shells, and bones.  They even made their own fossil and got to rebuild a dinosaur!  In writers workshop they continued writing different types of poetry.  In Language Arts, students are beginning to acquire more complex vocabulary.  They love what they are reading!  In Math, students are making real life connections to what they are learning. Math is all around us…in sports, shopping at the mall, sharing pizza evenly, playing games, and so much more!

Virginia Stewart

There are times that parents are upset that their student has Saturday School because of negative Den or Nest points.  We use these to monitor good and bad behavior in all grades 5 through 12.  I can appreciate parents who are upset that their weekend is disrupted because they need to devote Saturday morning for transporting students to Saturday school.  I do believe it has deterred behavior in most cases because students do not want to be there.

On the other hand, those same den or nest points are a great incentive.  Today I congratulated several students in 5/6 for the great job they are doing in class.  They were students with the highest points earned in their Dens.  They were so proud and could tell me exactly what they were doing that had given them good points.  They indicated it was fun to see good grades in improvement and to know they were helping their den.   We, as a staff, believe the positive of den and nest points far outweighs the negative effect for a few who receive Saturday School.

Another great note for this week is the reality that we have a staff that is so committed to helping students do well.  They are always willing to go the extra mile.  This weekend, the staff is hosting a Family Day.  Primarily it is to help raise money but it is also a day of fun for the children.  Staff has worked hard to make the day enjoyable.  We hope you will come this Saturday from 11am – 3pm. There will games, face painting, food, auctions and lots of fun!

Finally we are proud of all of our seniors who have been accepted and are signed up for college.  Again we have a counseling staff that wants to be sure that our seniors are not lost or unconnected from education once high school is over.  Some are signed up for community college while others are proud of the fact that they have been accepted to a great variety of four year schools.

T K

This Saturday is TLC Family Fun Day!  TK will be performing at 12:30.  We are asking students to meet Mrs. Tyler and Mrs. S at 12:15 at the East end of the school near the high school picnic area to line up and get ready.  The day is gearing up to be an amazing family fun day.  We hope to see all of you there!  …and don’t forget…the teachers are being auctioned off!  Place your bids in the silent auction to win a parent’s night out and a fun-filled night for students with the teachers for the winning bidders!

This week we traveled through time and explored dinosaurs!  Recently our class has been learning about living and non-living things, habitats, and food groups.  We decided to extend these topics to the era of dinosaurs because of the high student interest in dinosaurs.  Having student lead exploration is an exciting way to engage students and generate critical thinking skills at an early age.  They have been so excited as they became paleontologists and found dinosaur fossils, classified dinosaurs, and compared and contrasted a variety of dinosaurs.

Initial Phase

This week in Initial Phase students have been learning about Penguins!  We have read that penguins can hop up to five feet, penguins have barred tongues to help catch fish, and penguins are birds that cannot fly!  We are also in the process of writing an expository report about penguins!  In addition to all of our reading and writing about penguins, did you know that yesterday was nation Penguin Day?  We went on a virtual field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and watched a penguin trainer feed the penguins, we watched the penguins play in real time, and we even learned some cool new facts that were not in our books!  Be sure to ask your student what new facts they have learned about penguins!

Phase One

Phase 1 students were so excited to see some of our caterpillars have already changed into beautiful butterflies!  We let those ones go and watched them fly away!  It was a great learning experience being able to watch the metamorphosis from beginning to end. We also learned more about the earth, its layers, and soil and minerals.   In Writer’s Workshop, we continued our unit on poetry.  We have some wonderful, creative writers.  Continue to encourage your student to read daily – this trimester’s AR goals are the highest they have ever been!  Great Job!!! Don’t forget about our Family Fun Day this Saturday, April 30th from 11:00 – 3:00.  Don’t pass up the chance to bid on a “Parent’s Night Out”!  Your student will be able to invite some TLC friends and join their classroom teachers in a night of entertainment, fun, and food!  Highest bidder wins!

Phase Two

Phase Two students are getting into the testing mood!  We have begun practicing in class, getting students used to signing in, using the keyboard to type, and previewing the types of questions they may see on the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.  Did you know you can do the same at home?  Go to https://practice.smarterbalanced.org/student/ and log in by simply selecting [Sign In], then navigate through the login screens as a guest.  Be sure to select your student’s current grade level.  Once in, you will be able to access practice tests for Math and English Language Arts!

All fourth grade students are doing a recorder unit in Music.  Mrs. Watson has asked the students to practice 5-10 minutes, at least 4 days a week.   It is ALWAYS ok to practice more!  Please include practice time in homework time.

Field Trip Reminders:

  • Please be on time!  All students and chaperones should arrive at 7:30am and go directly to your classroom.  We will board the busses promptly at 7:50am.
  • Bring a fully disposable lunch. The museum does not allow food or drink in any of the exhibit galleries.
  • Remember to walk up to pick up your phase two student on Monday- do not use the drive through carline- we are hoping to be back by 3:30, but may need to adjust depending on traffic.
  • Students, remember to wear your spirit wear- it is much easier to identify you as one of ours!
  • Thank you for your flexibility!  We are anticipating a great field trip experience!!!
