Virginia’s Voice

I visited our preschool and our Transitional Kindergarten program this week and was delighted with the progress our smallest group of students have achieved in such a short time.  The teachers are also impressed with how quickly they are learning routines and expectations as well as becoming smarter academically.

Our preschool program services children two years through four.  There are a few openings left. Our Transitional Kindergarten program is full with 33 students who are part of the Primary Charter and are guaranteed a spot in Kindergarten next year.

Speaking of Primary Charter, Mrs. Watson is so happy.  We have decided to invest in her program by purchasing risers so she can conduct a winter and spring concert with her students.  It is an expensive purchase, but just think how great it will be to have her super singers singing in a big show instead of in the individual classrooms!!

The band from grades 6 through high school is showing great promise as well.  Mr. Zepeda is very pleased with their dedication and commitment.  Playing an instrument takes a great deal of practice and work, and our band students are living up to that commitment.  We look forward to their shows as well.

Finally, I have been impressed with the enthusiastic culture among the students in Discovery regarding positive den points.  Spirit is high and very few students have been assigned to Saturday school for our first one.  As a result of this spirit, the classes are focused and students are achieving great success.

T K

This week in our daily schedule, TK students added Math, working in their leveled learning groups, and also began Social Studies.  Students in TK get to learn new concepts in Science and Social Studies every week.  It is one of our favorite parts of the day, as the students get to learn, explore, and even experiment.   This week we explored  ‘All About Me’ and helped the students learn about themselves and share with their classmates.  This was a great way for them to build friendships and learn more about each other.  They also practiced sharing with the class and using ‘public speaking voices’.  We are so proud of their hard work this week!

Reminder: Our TK class pictures will be on Tuesday, October 11, 2016.  Please note, we will only have one picture session.  Retakes will not be available for the TK class.  We will send home more information including picture packet order forms closer to the scheduled day.

Phase Two

Students had a great learning week!  In Social studies, we are finishing our map projects and are starting our landforms unit.  Students are doing a great job with their projects!

A VIEW INTO OUR CLASSES:

Each week we will take you into a different classroom…..this week we would like to welcome you to Ms. Pelaez’s Science class:

Our future scientists were asked to find a solution to the question…How do we separate water, salt, rock, and diatomaceous earth?

Using funnels, cups, screens, filters, a syringe, and their incredible minds they were asked to form ideas on how one might separate water, salt, rock, and diatomaceous earth.  The students discussed, experimented, and created a solution to their question.  Ask your child what they thought…..and ask them if it worked.

You will find out the solution to this experiment in next week’s Chatter Charter.

Agenda grades were updated on Wednesday.

PLEASE REVIEW YOUR CHILD’S AGENDA.  THEIR AGENDA HOLDS DATES FOR EVENTS, HOMEWORK, PROJECTS, HOLIDAYS, and BREAK.

 DHSP

School is in full swing. In fact the dance class is learning to Swing Dance. All this as part of DHSP immersing ourselves into the curriculum of WWII for this year. I cannot wait until all students, and staff alike, learn some of the dances and songs of the 30’s and 40s!!

Take a peek inside some of the classes to see what is taking place there:

English 78 is doing well.  The greatest goal is to achieve chatter free transitions so we can get the most out of our 100 minutes together each day.  Students are reading Number the Stars  which is our book for Pentathlon as well.  It is a simple story that is a good introduction to the horrors of World War II.  In addition, we are writing two essays a week, discussing rhetorical non fiction articles, debating, preparing for the PSAT in January, learning many vocabulary words and learning the descriptive and functional grammar of simple and compound subjects that include infinitives.  We are indeed very busy.

Science:

Our motion unit has been a success. The Balloon Powered cars were able to demonstrate how motion works and allowed students to measure speed and direction.

dcs2

Social Studies:

Our focus this year is divided into three main topics: US Constitution through WWI; Presidential Election; and WWII. All classes have begun to learn about each area. Lots to learn this year and everyone seems up to the challenge.

Math:

Algebra 2 is progressing nicely.  We take the first unit test on Friday, August 19th.  Their problem solving skills are also improving as they work together to master these concepts.

Algebra 1 is reviewing some of the skills needed to be successful in Algebra.  There is quite a bit of re-teaching as well as review.  The class is working well towards understanding problem solving.  They are a very friendly class that loves to talk to anyone and everyone. We will be working on curbing social conversations.

Intro to Algebra is playing cards.  If you hear it, it is correct.  We use card games to practice our basic math skills.  We have an addition tournament on Friday, the 19th, with the winner earning $10

Neatness, penmanship and presentation of their work is being stressed as they sometimes cannot read their own work.

Leadership: Getting ready for homecoming as we brainstorm ways to make our float great and keep the spirit of Discovery High School Prep going!

Geometry: Wrapping up the Pre-Unit on Algebra skills we need for Geometry. Students are eager for their unit test.

Algebra: Working on solidifying our integers skills so that we are ready for the next concept in Algebra.

Intro to Algebra: Breezing through curriculum and loving every second of this all girl class.

Art:

The Art Elective Class has completed a unit on Color Theory, mixing colors and creating tints and shades. They began a String Art project this week using fluorescent colored threads to make geometric designs.

Spanish:

For the last three weeks we have covered Spanish vowels, Spanish Alphabet, Days of the week/Months in Spanish, Colors in Spanish, Counting Numbers in Spanish, How to introduce ourselves in Spanish (with students demonstrating in front of class), and now we are starting to learn body parts in Spanish, and Clothing names, and in the following weeks we’re also going to learn Foods and Animals.

Virginia’s Voice

The school year has started and we are very pleased with the transitions our students have made from one grade to the next.  Our DHSP students who went on to high school are looking great and seem very grown up.  It is a good change for them.

The new Discovery students in grades 5 and 7 are doing very well.  They are spirited and enthused about learning and are following expectations very well.

The new students in Kindergarten are doing very well.  Those who had been in TK look like returning students and are definitely setting the bar for the rest.  I have never seen such good coloring in Kindergarten this early in the year.  It tells me many are ready for writing. The Kindergartens who are now in first grade are fitting in very well.

TK just started this week and have adjusted well.  We are pleased with the results of the meet and greet last week.  It helped acquaint the students with their new environment.  Preschool is just about full.  There are only four openings left for three or four year olds.

As a teacher of 5/6 students in Algebra and as a teacher of 7/8 Advanced English students, I am pleased with the transition and most of all the caliber of learning the returning students bring to the class.  They are the beacon that others imitate and follow.  They set a great tone for the class and help make the bar even higher for the next school year.  It is a wonderful advantage to have returning students.

Just by accident we noticed that one of our groups in Discovery High School Prep was predominately boys, so we divided the boys and the girls into two separate learning groups.  The girls responded in a very positive way right away, the boys were a bit more skeptical.  There is a great deal of research indicating that test score results are better when classes are divided this way.  The teachers see a difference.  The students are in these groups for math, science, social studies, and language arts, but are mixed for electives, PE, and lunch.  Oh, and by the way…most students sit in separate groups on their own for lunch!

Thank you for your support of our schools. I believe we offer an exceptional educational opportunity. Please do not hesitate to ask questions.  Teachers do best with e-mail and if you need to discuss someone further, you can call Kay (831-5240) and ask for an appointment with me, Virginia Stewart.

T K

We had an amazing first week in TK! Students were so excited to meet the teachers and all of their new friends.  We did several projects together, read many stories, and did graphing activities!  Students learned new concepts such as how to read bar graphs and T-charts, what phonemes are, and they learned about alliterations, just to name a few!  Lots of learning for our little friends!  Students have also enjoyed having PE everyday and singing new songs with our Music teacher!  They are quickly learning our classroom procedures and showing us what responsible students look like!  We are so proud of our new TK students and can’t wait to watch them grow throughout our year together.

Primary Charter

Initial Phase

In Initial Phase this week we have been busy assessing, getting to know each other, practicing rotations, becoming more and more independent, trying to increase academic stamina, and learning why it is important to be a good listener.  We have completed all beginning of the year assessments and students will be placed in their learning groups starting next week.  In addition homework starts next week.  Please be sure to use the homework folder (RED) to assist you nightly.  Finally, our green and red folders are a very important part of our daily lives in P-6.  Please help your student become responsible and independent by incorporating a backpack routine, by talking about the days of the week and the days that each folder is due.  Not only will this foster independence it will help students take ownership of their learning. Thank you!

Phase One

Phase 1 students have completed their second successful learning week!  They are in their new groups and working hard.  In Language Arts, they are reading and engaging in interesting and meaningful discussions.   In Math, they are working on numbers and operations in base 10.  Taking numbers apart and examining them can be fun!  The Summer Olympics are bringing lots of excitement to the classroom….especially since USA has won the most medals!  Students in Phase 1 have been earning lots of SWOs and really demonstrating how a Primary student should behave.  We are proud of their accomplishments.  Please remember to take out all the papers in your student’s green folder and initial the behavior calendar.  Thank you again for all the generous donations!!

Phase Two

What an excellent second week of school!  We have finished assessing our students and have placed them in their language arts and math groups.  Students have been busy learning their groups’ procedures, rules, and expectations.  In language arts, students started reading their books and other fun activities.   In social studies, we continued learning about maps and are doing different projects and activities.  Ask your student all about it!

We started using our agendas this week.  Please remember to sign your student’s agendas on Friday and return it on Monday.

Please remember to send a labeled art shirt and headphones with your student if you haven’t done so already!

Thank you for your continued support!

DHSP

What a great first two weeks of Discovery High School Prep. Students continue to show enthusiasm and dedication to their education! The DEN Pride this year is contagious. The first ever combined DCS/DHSP rally was held on the field. Mrs. Dominguez and her Leadership class did a fantastic job of leading us in the fun and excitement

 Go Tigers!!!!!!!!

        phsa

There were a few class changes this week to get the students all placed into the correct classes for their optimal learning level. Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Wallace decided to create gender specific classes for one level based upon research that has shown great results can come about with such a grouping. So far this week all of those classes are doing great. Mrs. Wallace said, “I am already amazed at how much material we have been able to cover with those two classes, and I am very impressed with the class discussions that are taking place about the Electoral College!”

Back to School Night was a terrific success. Lots of parents came to see what Discovery High School Prep is all about.

The evening started with the leadership class leading the parents through an example of our morning Unity. Then parents followed their child’s class schedule. It is always so nice to have a few minutes to let parents have a glimpse of what goes on in the classrooms.

It has come to our attention that there is a scam being circulated that pretends to be the Tracy Learning Center.  It starts out recruiting employees and then asks for donations etc. This is not us.  Ignore and do not give any information that will access your bank and do not contribute money!

It is my hope that many of you have signed up to receive the Chatter.  It is a weekly newsletter that will help to keep you informed.  It is sent electronically and you will receive it in your e-mail.  It is usually sent out on Friday.

The students are doing very well.  We are pleased with the classes and the work the students are doing.  It is our hope that you check grades and contact teachers if you have concerns or issues with grades etc. If a student is not doing well, we have many resources available to provide some help and support.

Some high school teachers send grades to you by way of e-mail once or twice a month.  Others expect parents to check Aeries.  All teachers keep grades up to date.  The Discovery teachers place grades in the agenda every two weeks to help keep you informed and their grades are on Aeries as well.  The Primary students have green folders with lots of information for parents to read.

To be truly successful a school relies on a good partnership with parents.  We value your insights, concerns, and ideas.

T K

We are having so much fun learning in TK this week!  Students joined their learning groups for Language Arts and are doing a wonderful job learning how to transition between centers.  They are learning all of the procedures in our classroom and doing a great job following directions after only two weeks of school!  Everyday when they enter the classroom, our TK friends are hanging up their backpacks, putting away their water bottles, and moving their clip to green!  They are being so responsible!  Students are also practicing taking turns and sharing with their friends.  They are doing such a nice job following our classroom rules and using ‘caring hearts’ and ‘helping hands’.  We are so proud of them!

IMPORTANT INFO:  Our TK class pictures will be on Tuesday, October 11, 2016.  Please note, we will only have one picture session.  Retakes will not be available for the TK class.  We will send home more information including picture packet order forms closer to the scheduled day.

Primary Charter

PCS Picture Day is Wednesday, August 24th.

In Initial Phase this week we have been very busy.  Students have settled into their learning groups.  We have been working hard on being a productive citizen through completing all of our work neatly and properly.  In addition, we have had a huge focus on what a polite citizen is.  Students are learning about talking in turn, lining up properly, and being a nice friend.  Finally, we are also working very hard on being responsible with our backpacks, personal belongings, and folders.  These are all things that you can work on at home as well.

Phase 1 students held their own closing ceremony to celebrate the end of the Olympics!  They got to eat “torches” made out of Cheetos and ice cream cones while watching some of the highlights of the Olympic Games.  They learned what it takes to be a competitive athlete.  The students have completed their first week of AR.   They know what their goals are and are working hard to reach them.  Remind your student to read daily and take AR tests regularly.  Phase 1 students have also begun using ipads and reinforcing math skills with IXL.  We will soon be using many more new apps and programs to enrich your students’ learning.

Phase 2 students are becoming geography and map experts!  We are learning about different types of maps, landforms, and countries. Students are enjoying their language arts books and each group is learning about the past and explorers.  Our classes are also doing a great job with their AR tests…don’t forget, AR goals are due in 3 weeks!

Thank you for signing your child’s agenda every week.  Please remember to also check the green folders for important information.

Charter Chatter:

We are indeed very busy.

dcs1Science:

Our motion unit has been a success. The Balloon Powered cars were able to demonstrate how motion works and allowed students to measure speed and direction.

“Who is the woman who is outside the gate in the morning saying hello to the children in Primary and sometimes talking to parents?”  That is Mrs. Stewart, the Executive Director of the Tracy Learning Center.

“Who is the woman who teaches Algebra in grades five and six?”  That is Mrs. Stewart, the Executive Director of the Tracy Learning Center.

“Who teaches advanced English in seventh and eighth grade?” Mrs. Stewart teaches one of the high classes.

“Who did I meet with or e-mail when I was concerned about an incident at school?” You talked to Mrs. Kay who informed Mrs. Stewart and then set up a time for you to meet with her.

Allow me to introduce myself.  I am the co-founder and the Executive Director of the Tracy Learning Center.  It began in 2001 and we are now in our seventeenth year of operation.  Over the years, we expanded from fifth and sixth grade to the full complement. We now have Preschool to seniors in high school.  Each school has a learning director(s), who works under my supervision.  They do such a great job; some concerns never reach my level.  They know our values and beliefs about learning and developing students as individuals and they guide the staff to reflect those values.  We are a successful school system because we connect with one another and continue our beliefs from our youngest students who are 2 to those graduating from high school.  I am very proud of the staff at the Tracy Learning Center.  We work as a team and we all strive to make this the best place for everyone.

T K

The first day of Transitional Kindergarten is Monday, August 8, 2016. We are so excited to begin our year together! Last week we had our Back to School Night and had a wonderful time meeting with parents only to share information about our school and the TK program. This week we invited students and parents in small groups for personal ‘Meet and Greets’ with the teachers. We loved this special time with our incoming families. We think this will help the new students transition into our classroom next week. Thank you to all of the families who participated in these events.  The partnerships we have already formed will help us have an amazing year together.  See you all Monday!

Primary Charter

Initial Phase

Wow! Week one has already come and gone! Initial phase has been very busy. We have worked hard learning the importance of respectful listening, talking in turn, and inside voices. We have also been practicing how to be an independent student completing personal tasks each morning that help our classroom community flourish. You may hear you student talk about taking attendance, earning excellence box status, and taking pride in personal belongings by being organized by making sure all belongings are stored in a zipped up backpack. Furthermore, we have been practicing playground safety and the importance of taking turns, appropriate tagging, and where it’s safe to run and where it’s not safe to run. So many new things in such a short amount of time!
Parents! You can help your student be the best they can be, while they are learning so many new things. Age appropriate sleep patterns, healthy food choices for lunch, and a protein packed breakfast are a must for growing brains to be able to focus and participate in all of the learning we do each day. Try your best to set an early bed time schedule and provide healthy foods choices so your student can flourish.
Finally, we would like to say how proud we are of each and every P-6 student. This week has been packed with many new things.  With a longer schedule, PE, art, and music we believe our students have tried their very best and we are excited to see what next week brings!

Phase One

Phase 1 students had an amazing first week back to school!  They spent the week doing fun activities to help them learn all about their classroom. They also had enjoyed meeting their teachers and new friends, and learning new schedules, rules and procedures.   Finally, they completed lots of assessments to help their teachers place them in their perfect learning groups.  In social studies, they began to learn all about the Olympics. Did you know the torch is actually lit with a special mirror using the sun’s rays? Right now the torch is in Rio waiting for the opening ceremonies!  Next week will begin regular curriculum. Please make sure to return all the needed forms to your student’s teachers as soon as possible.  Thank you for all the snack and donated supplies.  Volunteer schedules will come home next month. Have a great weekend!  GO TEAM USA!

Phase Two

Welcome back to our Phase 2 students!  We had an awesome first week of school and we’re already very proud of the maturity and growth we’ve seen from our 3rd and 4th graders.  They are setting a great example for the other students in Primary.

Phase 2 students have taken their STAR reading tests to determine their new reading levels.  AR goals will be coming soon!  We are starting our social studies curriculum next week and our students are excited to be in their language arts and math groups.  Students will also be using agendas soon.  This is a way to track their own behavior and reflect on what they’ve learned throughout the week.  Students will take their agendas home on Fridays and parents must sign them.  If a student gets on warning or yellow, they must take their agenda home and get it signed that day.

We know phase 2 is going to have an amazing year!

Remember, volunteers will start on September 12th.  Thank you to everyone who has signed up to help in the classroom…we appreciate you!

Discovery Charter

We are ecstatic about being back for the 2016-2017 school year! – Our first week has been FANTASTIC!!!  Students walk through the doors ready to work, teachers and staff are excited to be back, and the entire campus is energized! Friday we held our first, annual Discovery Charter School/Discovery High School Prep rally where dens got together and cheered their den leaders on!! (If you don’t know what a den is, please ask your child. They are all part of a den, they have den colors; earn den points; and take great pride in all they do).  The rally was an amazing way to end our first week – students and staff alike were filled with Tiger Pride –
