TK students are really enjoying the new grass in our play area! We are looking forward to the fall temperatures cooling down while we play.  The day of the Homecoming Parade was especially hot, but the students did a fantastic job walking the entire route in their adorable Timothy Mouse costumes.  We are so proud of them and hope they had as much fun as the teachers did! Thank you to everyone who participated in this special event with us!

What a fun week! Spirit week was so much fun and the parade was amazing! Thank you for all those who came out despite the heat. Events such as these help build lasting memories for us and our students. Again, thank you for your participation. Next Monday please encourage your student to wear all blue in support of our anti-bullying campaign.

Our first full week of fall is complete in Phase 1, but we are still looking for the change in weather!  Hopefully the next few weeks will bring cooler weather.  Phase 1 students had so much fun dressing up for Spirit Week.  It was great to see the three schools united in spirit.  The homecoming parade was a huge success!!!  Our phase 1 “elephants” did a great job walking behind our amazing float.  We had a great week learning about The Plains Indians.  We even got to pick a Native American name and learned all about how Tepees were made.  We are adding all our information and artifacts to our “Living Museum.”

Phase 2 students enjoyed our spirited homecoming week!  Our lions were so excited to walk in the parade!

We are continuing our unit on Native American tribes and our students are becoming research experts.  While all groups are making progress in math, please continue to work on math facts at home.  Multiplication.com is a helpful and fun site that includes math fact games for all four operations and it’s free!
Don’t forget, P1 will go to the library on Thursday and P3 will go the following week.

SCIENCE: A new unit will begin on Monday 09/03/16.  The topic is “FLOATING AND SINKING.”  The goal is to link prior knowledge of the properties of matter to what students will be learning in earth science.  This unit is taught through “inquiry.”  “Inquiry” will include many hands-on activities and labs.  This means (parents), you will not see quizzes or notes from science – you will see more lab related work.  At the end of the unit there will be a unit test, rather than smaller quizzes.  As the test date comes closer, students will be provided with “study notes.”  If you have questions, please email lpelaez@tracylc.net.

Virginia’s Voice

Next week is homecoming. I like to think it is important to us that we realize how much school is home.  We realize a partnership between parents and staff is critical for success. In addition, we know how much time we spend with students.  In fact, this is their school HOME.

Not only is it important for us to teach students academics, but it is critical we help form our future world citizens.  Students need knowledge, but they also need to learn to appreciate differences, respect law and order, and learn to collaborate and work well with others.  It is important that students realize the importance of doing their work responsibly and well.  They also need to learn how to respect the rights of others in the classroom so that things run smoothly without disruption.  This is what is necessary to become productive workers in the future.

So, next week when we celebrate homecoming, we are celebrating those who have graduated and are coming back to be reminded of the school HOME that helped foster learning with them, and to  unite and celebrate with  those now  being formed from Preschool through high school the Tracy Learning Center way.  We are proud of our TLC students and all that they accomplish, and we appreciate the support we receive from each family we serve.

It is hard to believe that Autumn is upon us. This school year has been absolutely Fantastic so far and is just flying by.

English:

Mrs. Stewart’s English 78 is determined to master the use of pronouns and the diagramming of all verbals.  In addition, they are listening to music of the World War II time period and looking at art done during the same time.  The book being read is a hard look at war and how difficult it is to be in the infantry.  In addition to all of this, the class is practicing for the PSAT which will be given in January and continuing their work on essay writing and discussions in class.

This week we have been spending some time understanding the background history of our new novel Soldier X, adding more words to our ever expanding vocabulary, furthering our skills in diagramming, and practicing correct usage of our verb tenses. We are excited to continue our research into the history of WW2 while also examining the literature of the time period and how the authors and artists were reacting to it.

Leadership: Can’t wait for the Homecoming Parade to display all of the hard work everyone has put into this years float!!

Art:

For the last week of this Art Rotation, the students completed their Egyptian Scarab Art.  They are beautiful!  For our last two days, we worked on a One Point Perspective Landscape.

Social Studies:

Mrs. Wallace’s classes wrapped up their main Holocaust unit of study this week. The specific focus for the next month continues to be WWII, mostly focusing on the battles that shaped the course of history.

While Mrs. Wallace is away on Personal Leave she is thrilled to have Mr. Saldate take her classes. Mr. Saldate is one of the high school Learning Directors as well as a WWII expert. Welcome Mr. S.!!!!

CJSF:

“On Wednesday, the members of DHSP’s California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) had an opportunity to hear from guest speaker, Ms. Macek, from the Women’s Center—Youth and Family Services for San Joaquin County. CJSF had previously organized a fundraiser to collect monetary donations for Serenity House, the women’s shelter here in Tracy. They raised $150 and were able to better understand directly from Ms. Macek the different ways their contribution and community service efforts would help the women and children served by this invaluable organization. We couldn’t be more proud of them!”

Math:

Algebra 2 is finishing up their unit on graphing and should be ready for a Congratulations to the Multiplication Challenge Winner and runner up.

David Martinez was the winner and Cameron Edwards was runner up.  The gentlemen showed great knowledge as well as sportsmanship.

SWO….is in full swing.  The students have had 3 due dates as of this writing:

1) definitions of the 3 words…cooperation, collaboration and competition

2) creative image that represents those three words

3) a typed paragraph explaining their image and how it represents the three terms

Students are given at least ONE HOUR every Wednesday during Math class. Please check with them to make sure they have met these deadlines.  Next Wednesday is a typed paragraph about themself….how good of a collaborator are they and what the student could do to improve in this area.

Mrs. Ulricksen will be returning on Monday, September 26th. I would like to thank the students and their parents for a great eight weeks.  Keep up the good work!  I will be checking up on you. Mrs. King

Spanish: We are now coming to the end of the Spanish class. We have covered many basic Spanish phrases such as greetings, the different ways of saying “How are you”, saying have fun in Spanish, wishing good luck to someone, how to say take care, well done, happy birthday, how to say welcome, how to say I’m sorry and excuse me, our family members in Spanish, basic objects that can be found in a classroom, and we are currently working on and finishing our translation project where the students must translate a Spanish poem or song from Spanish to English and recite it in class.

This has been a year for insights.  I have noticed that many students, especially in Primary, feel they have the right to say NO to a teacher or parent.  I, probably more than some parents, realize how hard it is to raise a child in a world that encourages entitlement, but we as parents need to help our children realize that authority matters and that they do not have the right to say no when asked to do something in class or at home.  It is wonderful if they want to share their opinions, but when it comes to things they are asked to do, they need to respond respectfully.  Children in a classroom who loudly tell a teacher NO when they are asked to do something, such as work, or following directions, the entire class suffers.  We all need to work on helping children realize authority matters.

We have had one known head lice case in Primary this year. Please check your students head and scalp regularly for any lice or nits. If you see any consistent scratching or rubbing of the scalp please give a very thorough exam. Necessary treatment must be given if there are any lice or nits (eggs) present. Students should not return to school until treatment is done. If you have any questions please consult a physician or pharmacist. We do not want the spread of these contagious subspecies.

In Initial Phase students this week students have been exploring weather and appropriate dress for the weather, length and weight, math vocabulary such as before and after, blending sounds together to read and make words, nouns and verbs, and classifying objects.  Phew!  So much learning and so little time!  We are also preparing for our Homecoming parade and Spirit Week.  Have a safe and well rested weekend because there is more learning ahead!

Phase 1 learns about culture and diversity!!  What a great week we had learning about so many different cultures, traditions, beliefs, and customs.  Thank you to all the parents that came in and taught us about their culture.  We got to see traditional clothing, sample traditional food, and see beautiful pictures and posters.  We felt like we were in a different country every day!!  In Writer’s Workshop we have begun our opinion writing.  Students will go through the entire writing process before completing their final draft.  We can’t wait to see their finished work.

This week in phase 2 we learned more about Native Americans and different tribes.  We will have a special guest speaker from a local tribe come and give a presentation next week.  We are excited to hear about Native American life firsthand.

Every month phase 2 teachers will pick three outstanding 4th graders from each class to be our Leadership students for the month.  We started this week and our special 4th graders have a very important job this month.  They are creating our school cheer that we say every morning at Unity!  We will pick new Leadership students every month and there will be a different job for them every month.  We know they will do an amazing job!

Don’t forget Wednesday, September 28th is our Homecoming Parade!  PCS students will be dismissed early that day – 2:00p.m.  No Study Club will be offered.

Virginia’s Voice

In a recent discussion in my English 78 class, we talked about the pros and cons of receiving free college education.  There were mixed ideas about such a thing.  However, what it really made us realize is that all Americans have access to a free education for thirteen or fourteen years.  We all realized that it is imperative that we make the most of that gift and that in the end it can lead to scholarships that will pay for some of college.  I wondered how many of our students actually appreciate the gift of a free education and all that it offers.  Then I thought about the plight of the inner city students who have no choice of the schools they attend.  I can just imagine, for example, what a school in Chicago must be like.  Imagine having no choice and no ability to decide to go to a private school.  That was when I also appreciate the ability to have charter schools as alternatives.  I agree, all charter schools are not equal, but they are a choice.  I wondered how many of our students realize what a privilege it is to have access to a free education and a choice!

Initial Phase

This week in Initial Phase, students have been exploring weather and our new science program Koantum.  We have explored appropriate dress, thermometers, and seasons.  Primary Spirit wear came home this week.  We like to show school spirit every Friday by wearing school spirit wear or blue. In addition, we have a “special” spirit day the FIRST FRIDAY of each month.  Look for the entire year’s schedule in this weeks green folder.  Finally, parent volunteers start on Monday.  We had a lot of parents sign up.  So, we conducted a lottery for trimester 1 volunteers.  If you did not get a spot, don’t worry, we will draw again in Trimester 2. Have a well deserved, relaxing weekend.

Phase 1

Phase 1 students had another great learning week!  They had a lot of fun making their recipe books with rice recipes from different countries.  They also learned a lot of fun and interesting facts about those countries.  Ask your student what their favorite country is and try cooking that rice dish!  Students practiced counting, adding, and subtracting money by shopping in the student store.  They love spending their hard earned money!  Other things we have been learning about include: verbs and verb tenses, properties of addition, and writing super sentences, Next spirit day theme will be Farmer Day on October 7th.  Start planning now!  Please make sure to check your student’s folder for more upcoming events.

Phase Two

Phase two students continue to do a great job!  In Social Studies, students began their Native American research projects.  In groups, students will be researching a California Native American tribe and putting together a project / presentation.  Ask your student all about it!

This week, P3 had a great time walking to the library!  It will be P8’s turn on Thursday, September 15th.

Please remember that parent volunteers will begin on Monday, September 12th.  You will receive more information in your green folders.

Virginia’s Voice

It is the start of September and we have settled into our new school year.  The children and the teachers are doing well.  We believe this is one of our best years.

One of the things we work on is helping our students to have pride.  Pride in the work that they do and n themselves.  We award good work and effort with recognition and praise.  We help students who need support to be successful so that everyone can feel pride.

We also work on having student have pride in our facility.  Yes, it may be old, and not the prettiest facility in the area, but it is ours and we value it. Our classrooms are decorated and cared for with paint and they are cleaned daily.

Most of all, we help our students to learn the importance of respect for one another and the staff.  It is important that students are kind and considerate of each other and that they learn to respect differences.  Many visitors to our schools note how respectful our students are.  We appreciate the compliment, but we also know we work hard to achieve it.

This week in TK we had our first Birthday Party!

IMG_2428

Transitional Kindergarten is unique in that students all enter the program being four years old and turn five by December 2. With so many students celebrating birthdays in a short amount of time, we have a monthly birthday party to celebrate! This week we celebrated our August Birthdays by making birthday crowns, singing, and of course eating cupcakes! This is a fun tradition in our classroom. Thank you to all of the birthday parents who attended and donated to this special event!

Primary Charter

This week in Initial Phase students have really found their way.  We are so proud of our students.  Lessons are well on their way and students are learning about capitals at the beginning of a sentence, punctuation, verbs, subitizing, and comparing numbers.  We are excited about all the learning that is taking place and we know they will continue to grow and meet our high expectations!

We have a lot of sick kiddos.  Please remember: DO NOT send your child to school until they are fever free for 24 hours. This means WITHOUT medication.

Phase 1 students had a fantastic learning week!  In Social Studies we began our amazing unit on Everybody Cooks Rice.  It was so fun to see how alike and different we all can be.  We even got to sample some different types of rices from different parts of the world.  It was also very exciting seeing all the students in their spirit wear.  Football season has begun and we are definitely showing our spirit.  Next week in Writer’s Workshop we will begin opinion writing.  Can’t wait to see how creative our students are!

Phase 2 classes have started their monthly library trips!  This week P1 enjoyed their library day.  P3 will go next week and P8 will go the following week.  We will continue this rotation every month.  Please remember that students are responsible for returning their own books!  P1 students, your books are due on September 22nd.

If you have any coupon fundraiser booklets, please return them to your student’s teacher.  Thank you to all that sold books and returned them.  Have a happy and safe 3 day weekend!!!

Charter Chatter:

Take a peek inside some of the classes to see what is taking place there:

English 78 We have completed our first month and our first novel.  Number the Stars was a good introduction to Pentathlon and to World War II.  We enjoyed the book and the historical information we gained as a result of this historical fiction book.  In addition to reading, we are working on PSAT practice, vocabulary mastery, descriptive and functional grammar and of course writing and discussion.

The average in this challenging class is improving as students gain skills and work on improving.

Science:

In science we explored the concept of inertia. The challenge was to get the penny (coins) into the cup without lifting the card and only touching the card with one finger. Kids had a great time!

Social Studies:

The Social Studies classes are learning about Anne Frank. We have begun to watch a fantastic movie called, Anne Frank The Whole Story. There is a lot of wonderful discussion taking place in the classrooms.

Leadership: Float building has begun!!!

Art:

In Art Elective, the students viewed the artwork of Marc Allante, and then created their own version of his well known “drip” paintings. Super messy, but fun!

Spanish:

This week we finished learning about food names and how to order a meal in Spanish, and next we will be starting to learn animal names, weather, and telling time in Spanish.
