Special congratulations this week to the Discovery students in grades 5 and 6.  They did an outstanding job researching, creating tri-boards and explaining careers they are interested in pursuing.  I was so impressed with their knowledge and enthusiasm.  Many parents came to visit the exhibits both days and the compliments were incredible.  Bravo for a great SWO project with great support from the teachers.

TLC Safety Committee

This week our parent/staff safety committee met to discuss some concerns we had as well as talk about how we might improve student safety at TLC.  Several topics were addressed and we are implementing some changes that we think will help make our school a better place to learn.

  • Our team was able to find a contractor to redesign the main entrance that would allow us to funnel visitors through the front office.  We will be installing dual gates that allow us to secure the campus during school hours as well as meet the requirements for emergency campus access (ie an ambulance etc.) and maintain access for those with disabilities.
  • Several parents have asked if they could assist in carline duties.  We had many concerns brought up about student safety during drop off and pick up.  As a school, we will continue to find ways to make the carline more efficient and parents can help with this.  Beginning March 1st, we will have parent safety ambassadors in front of the school from 7:30 – 8:45 in bright yellow vests to help students coming to school.  If you are able to help, please email our committee at: tlcsafety@tracylc.net.  Even once a week would be a big help.
  • Along with teachers and parents helping with carline we discussed the need for drivers and pedestrians to PLEASE obey traffic rules.  Many parents were concerned about the students who run across the street in the mornings and afternoons. It is extremely important we use the crosswalks to a avoid a horrible situation.
  • Finally we talked about students being safe of campus and the main concern was bathrooms.  We have added several new cameras on campus to watch what happens outside the bathroom and the drinking fountains.  The front office has a monitor that allows them to quickly act if they see student messing around as well as aide us when a student reports vandalism in the bathroom.

A BIG thank you to those parents who participated in the meeting and to the staff who were willing to help us keep our students safe.  If anyone ever has any concerns, we want to hear them. tlcsafety@tracylc.net

This week in TK students became scientists! They got to explore several different scientific tools and loved making their own predictions and observations while using the tools. They experimented with magnets and measurement, and examined if objects would sink or float. Students recorded and shared the observations they made.

This fun science week concluded with a special visit from our very own Millennium Falcon Scientists! The students loved this special visit and can’t wait for these incredible scientists to come back again!

Kicks off Monday, February 27, 2017
Students can begin recording their minutes on the recording sheet on Monday.

Grand Prize will be awarded to the top reader and fundraiser.  Other prizes will be awarded to top reader and fundraiser in each classroom and top classroom in each phase will earn a party. Plus, every participating student will be entered in a raffle for prizes.  (1 ticket for every 100 minutes read, 1 ticket for turning in envelope, 1 ticket for meeting reading goal, 1 ticket for every 50 minutes over reading goal).  Continue to get pledges from friends, family, and colleagues until March 10.

100% of proceeds will go back to PCS classrooms.

Initial Phase

This week in Initial Phase, students have been busy talking about what sinks and what floats.  We predicted, developed hypothesis, tested, observed, and then wrote about what we saw and whether it mirrored our hypothesis.  Students had a lot of fun learning about various objects such as; valentine candy, gold rings, rubber ducks, ice, and toys.  We even experimented with 7UP!  So much fun.  As your student about it.

Phase 1

Phase 1 students have been so excited to see the sun, especially since we have been learning so much about the solar system!  Hopefully this nice weather continues for a while.  The students have spent this week learning about the moon and its different phases.  Take a look each night with them and see if you can help them identify some of the phases.  Next week we will learn all about the inner planets, also known as the terrestrial planets – Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.   In Writer’s Workshop we are finishing up our narratives and will begin poetry soon.  We are seeing some great examples of narratives!  Next week in Math and Language Arts we will have some fun celebrating Dr. Seuss Day, with graphing, rhyming, crafts, and reading.  Keep encouraging your student to read!  It is true….”The more that you read, the more things you will know.  The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss  Next week our spirit day will be on Thursday, March 3rd, instead of Friday so that we can dress up on Dr. Seuss’ actual day!  Your student may wear anything related to Dr. Seuss.   Please remember to turn in permission slips and money for our field trip.

Phase Two

We had another awesome week with science.  We continued our unit on energy.  Some students had the opportunity to experiment with prisms, magnifying glasses, and water to better understand reflection, refraction, and spectrum.  Next week starts off our first annual Read-a-Thon!  Students can win awesome prizes for top fundraisers and top readers!  Remember – students may continue to get sponsors throughout the Read-a-Thon!

Thursday, March 2nd is our Dr. Seuss spirit day!  Have students dress like their favorite Dr. Seuss character!

Have a great weekend!

Jeremy Blanco SKYPE call was amazing.  On Wednesday morning, DCS students/staff skyped with a friend of Ms. Pelaez, Jeremy Blanco.  Jeremy is hiking/biking from Chile to the United States.  When asked how many miles he has “moved,” Mr. Blanco stated he has walked approximately 600 miles and biked approximately 1,000 miles.  He told the students of his many adventures and learnings about our beautiful world and the people he has met.

Students asked questions and sat intensely during our 90 minute SKYPE call.  Ask your child what they learned. It was quite interesting!!

This week is National School Counseling week.  Here at The Tracy Learning Center, we have two counselors for the high school and one for Discovery.  The main focus for counseling is academic but they do so much more.  They are  a great listening ear for students having difficulties with friends or others at school, they are a great link for parents who want to know about things related to their student and school. We are very fortunate to have three counselors working with us.

High school counselors help with scholarship applications, community service, SWOs, and applications for college as well as guiding the internship process and helping student register for college classes.  They are busy.

The counselor at the Discovery level is busy with setting goals for behavior or academics for students having difficulty particularly in grades 7 and 8.  That counselor works with parents and teachers for make plans that will help students improve.  This is our first year with a middle school counselor and we are pleased we made that decision.

I might add that the primary teachers do a great job working with students who need extra support and plans for improvement.  They have the opportunity to work in a self-contained classroom and I am always impressed with the behavior plans they come up with to help a student feel good and improve.

This week in science our students explored habitats. Last week they learned about some special animals, and this week they applied what they learned to see how those animals survived in their individual habitats. Our class learned the characteristics of each habitat, about camouflage, other animals in the specific environments, and how the living things within a habitat depend on one another to survive. We specifically investigated freshwater habitats, the rain forest, the ocean, the desert, and the arctic. In the pictures below, students were doing a project about the four levels of the rainforest.  After ‘acting out’ the levels (becoming plants and animals in ascending height for each level), the students were experts in placing the animals in the proper levels of the rain forest. It was exciting to see peers collaborating and helping one another as they completed this project.

Phase 1

Phase 1 students are getting pretty used to this wintery weather.  It has given us a chance to talk about all kinds of weather including how powerful it can be to destroy property, nature, and roads.  Hopefully we will be able to resume regular outside play soon.  Please be sure to send your student with appropriate clothing and shoes for this weather.  In Writer’s Workshop we are so proud of the writing our students are demonstrating.  We are seeing more and more independent writers emerging.  It is a direct correlation to the increased reading we have noticed!  Next week we will continue to explore narrative writing.  In Social Studies, the students have learned about the great achievements that Black Americans have made to our society. But even more so, they learned that the characters of these people are what make them great.  Students are busy with very exciting literature in Language Arts and tackling more grammar and phonics concepts.  In Math we are learning about all types of measurement including time, money, length, height, and graphs.  Look for information to come home soon regarding our next field trip.  If you would like to be a volunteer, please make sure that you check with the office to see if you have cleared everything needed.  Thank you so much to all the parents that have donated much needed supplies to our classrooms.  Have a great weekend!

Phase Two

Next week, students will continue their study on energy.  Students are fascinated to learn about the different types of energy!  We have many fun activities planned.  Students are looking forward to the fun hands on activities involving energy.  Also, Student leadership has been busy helping prepare for our next fundraiser!  We can’t wait to tell you all about it!

Mark your calendars! There is no school on Monday, February 20th, in honor of Presidents’ Day!  School will resume Tuesday, February 21st.

Have a great weekend!

In English 78, we are half way done with the book we                                     are reading.  We are finishing up the first draft of our                                           first research paper and we are becoming quite the                                    experts in diagramming very complex sentences.

New to the class is our news reports once a week and debating        topics in small groups.  We want to become good at speech and debate.  Our essay writing is improving as we continue to write at   least one essay a week.  Since we are doing research, writing is a    twenty five minute write once a week in class.  Mrs. Stewart is         quite impressed with the work we are doing.

In Mrs. Zo’s class we are working hard on completing our first draft      of the SWO. Students are becoming well-versed in their topics and           are learning how to paraphrase and summarize research in their own      words. Their writing is truly benefiting from this practice. I look          forward to seeing the results of their hard work!

In Ms. Langston’s class this week we have been learning how to    write citations in MLA format. Students will use this new skill as they continue to write their SWOs. The next deadline for SWO is         coming up! On February 17, students must turn in their first draft      of their essays.

In Academic Pentathlon students created games based on the science packet. Very creative and fun!!

Pre K

Our study of careers is taking us many new exciting place. This week as a part of our science curriculum we experimented with wind. We hypothesized if our object could be blown by the wind and tested our hypothesis with a fan. We charted our results and now add to our list every day.

We placed masks and other props in our dramatic play area that encourage our students to reenact scenes from the book Goodnight Gorilla. Although this play is lighthearted and fun our students details, and act out major events, characters and settings–all during play!

T K

After learning all about living and non-living things, our TK class went on a journey to do a close study on some animals around the world. They investigated anteaters, meerkats, sea horses, and narwhals! They loved wearing an anteater nose and trying to ‘eat’ ants. Our students realized it was much easier for an anteater to eat 35,000 ants for breakfast than even they could pretend! It was also exciting to have a student become a meerkat lookout and warn their fellow meerkats to burrow as the dangerous eagles were spotted flying nearby! When learning about sea horses, Junior won the challenge to eat the most krill! What a fantastic science week!

Primary Charter

It is bitter sweet that we say good bye to Mrs. Zuniga.  We are so very happy for this new chapter in her life and we cannot wait to meet her baby boy, Xero.  We will miss her while she is gone, but she will return April 24th!

We would like to welcome Mrs. G!  Mrs. G will has worked at Primary Charter School for about a year and we are excited she is now part of our P-6 family.

We hope to see you at the Crab Feed tomorrow.  If you could not make it this year, be sure to save a spot on your calendar for next year.  It is worth it!

We had another wet and windy week in Phase 1.  Tracking the weather has been exciting.  We learned from Punxsutawney Phil that we are going to have 6 more weeks of winter because he saw his shadow.  That is one smart groundhog!  The students really enjoyed coming to school in their pajamas and showing their school spirit.  This week and next week we have been and will be learning all about famous and important Black Americans in history.  During Black History Month we are recognizing the great achievements and contributions Black Americans have made to society.  In Writer’s Workshop students completed a great How to Essay on making pizza.  Next we will learn how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. In math students have learned so much about fractions and will be soon moving on to measurement.  Make sure your student is reading daily and works hard to reach their goal.  Hope to see you at the Crab Feed this Saturday.  Have a great weekend.  J

Our phase 2 classes are learning all about famous people in history.  February is also Black History Month and President’s Day.  We have also picked new 4th grade leadership students and they have a very important job to do this month!  Please make sure your child continues to read…AR goals are due soon!

Language Arts:

Mrs. Stewart’s English 78 is busy mastering grammar through diagrams of great complexity.  They are working on their research paper related to World War II and are working on learning art and music of the time period as well.  The students took the PSAT89 last week. We all felt it was easier than the ones we practiced.  We have embarked on a new way to do current events…we are reporters and are doing this to improve reading and speaking.  This has taken the place of PSAT practice…so grades should improve in that area.

In Ms. Langston’s room we are continuing our study on                                        themes in our book Soldier X. Students are working hard examining how our main character has changed throughout the book and how the roles of the themes have developed throughout the story. They are making posters which they will present and teach to the class.

The Science classes are learning about Land Forms.

The Social Studies classes are spending time appreciating Black History month and also gearing up for Wax Museum in March.
