WAX MUSEUM
The 7th and 8th graders did a great job performing for the WAX Museum project. The students were well prepared and learned many things about the character they were portraying. Many students have done this project several times and it is easy to see how much they have improved over time.
FIFTH GRADE
The new to be enrolled 5th graders came this week to meet with Mrs. Hawkins. They explained how excited they are to come to the school. Many have been waiting since Kindergarten to enroll and I am sure it was a long wait, but they think it was worth it.
LOTTERY
Thanks to Mrs. Beringer, the Kindergarten lottery was conducted last week. We are so sorry we are only able to take a few students but the TK students are now part of Primary so they take priority as per our charter.
PRESCHOOL
Preschool is expanding to include a half day program AM OR PM in addition to the full day program. Call for more detail if you are interested.
MOVING and BUILDING
The relocation of our high school campus for next school year is in the planning stages. We will be over behind West High School in a campus that was built for high school that will accommodate our students quite well while our Primary and Discovery two story building is built. The high school remolding will take place once Primary and Discovery is able to move into their new two story building. The entire process, once it gets started should take about two years. We will keep you well informed as we learn what is happening.

This week in TK students explored force and motion. Our scientists learned the scientific words gravity, force, position, push, pull, motion, and friction. They learned how gravity works, they observed animals moving fast and slow, brainstormed things they can push or pull, and discovered how some objects can roll, slide, and spin. At the end of the week, students worked in small group centers to experiment with force and motion. They had fun making predictions about how fast or slow objects would move and if friction or gravity would alter their speed. It was exciting to see the students creating their own experiments!
Primary Charter
Initial Phase
This week students have been busy mapping out their own story. Students are encouraged to think of things they know a lot about when picking a writing topic. We then discuss story elements such as characters, setting, problem, and solution. The stories we have heard so far are wonderful. Encourage your student to write stories at home! They are an amazing keepsake and not to mention wonderful practice!
We also visited the Wax Museum put on by Mrs. Wallaces’ students. P-6 students learned about famous people of the past and got to watch 7/8 grade student reenact the famous, historical men and women. We were impressed at the level of respect that the 7/8 grade students demonstrated for our little learners.
Phase 1
Phase 1 Students had an amazing time on their field trip to the Chabot Space and Science Center! They learned so much more about the solar system, telescopes, astronauts, and space. Did you know that telescopes have names? Ask your student if they remember the name of one of the telescopes. Thank you so much for all the volunteers that accompanied us. In Science we will continue our unit on the Solar System and learn all about asteroids, meteors, and comets. In Writer’s Workshop, the students began their unit on poetry. The firs type of poem we are learning about is the Haiku. Students are learning to use their senses when writing about nature. We have some very talented and creative writers. Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead this weekend. We are definitely looking forward to spring and spring weather! Please look for Parent/Teacher Conference Sign-Ups to come home soon. For those that are going to the Mother-Son Masquerade Dance….Have FUN!!!
Phase Two
This week, Phase 2 teachers sent home our Science Fair Project information! Please look in your student’s green folder or homework folder for this information. Science Fair projects are due on Monday, April 3rd. Please do not send your student’s project before this date. Also, please look in your green folders for conference sign-up sheets. Please return your conference sign-up sheet by Friday, March 17th. Parent teacher conferences will be held Monday, April 3rd through Friday, April 7th. We look forward to meeting with you! Today is the last day of the Read-a-Thon! Your student will be taking home their in-class reading log in order to add their minutes to their home reading log. Please add up all minutes read, collect donations from sponsors, and return envelopes to school by Friday, March 17th. Also, tomorrow is our first annual Mother-Son Masquerade Ball from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. Hope to see you there!

Discovery Charter
This week was filled with interviews for incoming 5th grade students (2017-18 5th grade students (non Primary students)), math placement tests (for incoming 5th grade students), our boys 1st 6th grade basketball game, DHSP’s Wax Museum, and preparing for our first annual Mother Son Mascaraed Ball.
This week also brought sunshine, lunch outdoors, and PE activities on the field. It was a week filled with positive activities.
Last week, students learned how to look up grades in AERIES, write grades in their agendas, and review assignments. Parents have been emailing and thanking us for providing their child with this excellent resource. Please take time with your child to review grades on AERIES, have them walk you through their classes and their grades. They will need this skill as they enter DHSP, Millennium, and college.

Read-A-Thon money IS DUE BY WEDNESDAY, 3/15/17 – THANK YOU to those of you who have donated money towards our Read-A-Thon. We are asking that all students fundraise $10.00 or more towards our Read-A-Thon if possible. Many students have read MANY MANY minutes!!!! Thank you to everyone who participated.
We are excited to have our first annual read-a-thon fundraiser! This is a fundraising event for our school which will help raise funds while encouraging our children’s love for reading. The READ-A-THON allows our children to raise money without having to sell anything. One hundred percent of the money collected will fund Discovery Charter School.

At Discovery, we know building a caring school community is a complement to academic achievement. We believe in creating classrooms where there is cooperative learning. Students work in whole group, pairs, or small groups to deepen their understanding of concepts and to understand how to work with one another. Through rigorous instruction, students are motivated to learn, build a liking for school, enjoy classes, and learn to have a concern for our TLC family. Discover High School Prep
The Wax Museum was a huge success!!!! Nearly 200 7th and 8th grade students participated in this annual event that Mrs. Wallace’s social studies classes put on.
Language Arts:
English 78 has the results of the PSAT
Scores were all acceptable. Some eighth graders saw good improvements. Seventh graders did well. Ask your student for their individual scores
Our highest score was 1270. Perfect is 1540.
This week, students have been collaborating to create games to practice their verb conjugations in four tenses. We are also working toward finishing our current novel and starting our next one. We have been honing our diagramming skills and preparing for our SWO speeches. Speech preparation is due this Friday, and students will receive their speech day assignment for SWO this week.
We want to give a big round of applause to our Science Olympiad team for all their hard work last weekend at the San Joaquin County Competition. It was a fun-filled, exciting day with over 1200 students competing from all over the county. Great Job Tigers!!
Academic Pentathlon is hard at work getting ready for competition in April.

College bound seniors: most colleges will be notifying applicants the status of their admission in early Spring by either mail or online via the student portal on each individual college’s web site. We anticipate hearing about the acceptance letters. All students accepted to a college or university should let the Counselors know as soon as they are notified.
