The graduation of the class of 2017 was wonderful.  The speakers were amazing and the band was perfect. The audience was respectful and no one would have asked for more!  The special part of the ceremony was noticing that for the first time we had NINE students who began in our first Kindergarten class who stayed with us for the full 13 years.  The original Kindergarten, taught by Mrs. Woods, had 20 students.  I remember it well.  We started out thinking Kindergarten needed a shorter day and within the first month changed our minds since they were eager and we had so much we wanted to teach them.

Meanwhile, before graduation, our move of the high school to our alternate location went off without much trouble.  The students and staff helped Mr. Hepner with the move and we were done in two days.  The FASTTRACK began on Monday and is going very well.  Thanks for the parents who are dropping off students at MHS site.  You are doing well with the drop off and pick up rules.  The students and staff are enjoying the new site.

Our first annual DHSP-CJSF Relay For Life team event was a HUGE success! Last Saturday, we had 30 students from DHSP and Millennium HS come out to support the “Discovery—CJSF” Relay For Life team. What an AMAZING turn out, despite temperatures reaching into the mid-90s!!! Whew, it was hot! From 9am until 10pm students walked laps, volunteered where needed, supported other teams and their booths to help raise money for the American Cancer Society, took part in the many fun activities offered (like the dunk tank!), and collected a total of $118 in donations. Next year the students have even bigger ideas planed for participating, so stayed tuned and make sure to join the next time!

Virginia’s Voice

Special congratulations to the parents and the students of the class of 2017.  It is an important milestone in one’s life to leave high school.  Suddenly, things are less structured and the drive to complete things is now square on the shoulders of the graduate.  For those leaving for college, there are many adjustments ahead.  For those leaving for the Military, go in God’s speed and love.  For those signed up for community college and vocational training, it is important to keep yourselves focused on your goals and to make sure you are fulfilling those goals.  There are fewer adults guiding your path than some of the other avenues after high school.

In the end, we all wish our graduates focused freedom, fulfillment of dreams and goals and a commitment to helping to make the world a better place regardless of the paths each of them travel.

This week in TK students learned about conservation and keeping our planet clean. Students explored ways common items were repurposed and recycled.  They learned about trash and litter and how dirty our environment can become from garbage. The highlight of the week was meeting a very special friend, Wasteful Wally. Wally did not know how to recycle or keep the earth clean and the students were able to teach him all about these important things!

Social Studies finished up their Unit on Gettysburg and took the Unit Final. We are on to the end of the Civil War and Reconstruction in the next few weeks.

This week, students are wrapping up state testing for the year. As we get back into our regular rhythm in the classroom, students continue their study in Farewell to Manzanar. This week, we have begun a project on characterization, in which students must identify and expound on the distinctive nature that makes up one of our three major characters in the book. They began with a group poster project that em-“body”-ied the relevant features of one of the three characters, and they will write an essay individually that explores one of the characters in depth.

Dear Parents and Families:

Reading for pleasure, inside and outside of school, has real and long-lasting benefits. It unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:

  • Set the example. Let children see you read.
  • Have a collection of books in the home. Update this collection routinely to keep pace with changing tastes and reading skills. Talk about books and what your child is reading.
  • Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.

Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right to our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.

Book Fair dates:         Tues. May 16 – Fri May 19

Shopping hours:    7:30am – 8:30am and 3:30pm – 4:30pm each day

Special activities:       Students will preview Mon. May 15th, times tba

Before you visit the Book Fair, be sure to download the Book Fairs app to help you find the right books for your child. For more information, visit: scholastic.com/apps/bookfairs.

If you are unable to attend in person, we invite you to visit our Online Book Fair at scholastic.com/fair.

We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit
our school.

Happy Reading!

Our five butterflies have emerged! The students were so excited to see the process of them coming out of their chrysalis, drying their wings, and watching them use their proboscus to drink nectar from the fruit we fed them. TK did not want to see our need friends go! The class truly enjoyed this life cycle process and have taken a supreme interest in nature. We will be building on this interest throughout the rest of the year.

Primary Charter

Recently we had a student in PCS come down with the childhood disease “Fifth Disease” also known as “Slapped Cheek Disease”.  Typical symptoms of this disease are bright red or rosy cheeks appearing on both cheeks for 1-3 days. This is a very mild disease in which the rash can be preceded by a sore throat, fever and flu type symptoms.  No treatment is necessary.  This disease is highly contagious therefore you should avoid exposure to others especially pregnant women. Those ill are most continuous for several days prior to the rash outbreak so please do sent your child to school if he or she is experiencing these symptoms.

Discovery

We had a great week, filled with spirit.   Each day, students dressed in spirit wear to include college day, sports day, polka-dot day, Disney day, and Spirit day.  We ended the week with a rally and our annual Jog-A-Thon.
