We appreciate the support we have received from parents with our new system for discipline.  The whole point behind Restorative Justice is to help students realize that their behavior has an effect on the entire class.  When a student is disruptive, it affects the learning environment and takes times away from instruction.

The weekly meetings we have had with students at the Discovery level have made a difference in the behavior of the students.  Students are more aware of their behavior, what they need to do to change, and why the change is necessary.

All classes in our schools are using this call for justice and the restoration of justice by changing the behavior that is causing a disruption in learning and it is working.  Thank you for your support of the system we are using.

South Sudan Donations

This year students at Discovery are working on learning the importance of recycling and the value of using water responsibly while fundraising for the Water for South Sudan organization. The Water for South Sudan organization aims to provides clean, accessible water to peaceful communities in South Sudan by building wells. Discovery is fundraising for this cause through buying waters on campus, recycling bottles, and participating in coin-collecting challenges. Student Recycling Teams are also helping to collect and organize all of the recycling on campus as well as working towards promoting positive recycling behaviors. Our goal is to raise five thousand dollars by next April, as well as to encourage a recycling culture among our students. By reaching our goal, we will be entered into a drawing to win a visit from Salva Dut (from this year’s Pentathlon book, A Long Walk to Water), as well as helping to provide hundreds of people in South Sudan with clean water.

Language Arts:

This week in Language Arts, we are completing our first rotation of our 3-book book club series. Students will be meeting in groups to discuss what they read, and they will be choosing a project to go with it as well. We are also continuing our study of African culture, music, and history. Every week, students are improving their writing skills with the weekly essay and expanding their vocabulary with new words every week. Ask your student about their essay topics each week! We are learning new things about our world from the topics and new writing strategies weekly.

Don’t forget:

  • Our Spelling Bee is coming up!
  • Read a Thon begins next Monday October 2! Raffle tickets will be given to students for each 60 minutes read.

CJSF:

Last week, the students of the California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) tallied up the donations brought in for the East of Eden Animal Rescue donation drive and counted a total of 469 items! In just a week’s time, that’s AMAZING! Each den competed with one another to collect the most items for this wonderful organization and we are so proud of the results! Good work students!

Recently, I was explaining to the students why we have the enrichment courses we offer at both Primary and Discovery.   I thought it would be a great thing to share with you as well.

Primary:

Spanish is taught as an enrichment. If you consider that this enrichment begins in TK and continues into Discovery, we should have students fluently speaking a second language by the time they enter high school.

Art is offered to all students in grades TK to 4.  Art is a great way for young children to express ideas and to begin the writing process by understanding the visual stories they can tell. Later those who express ideas in art, can better translate that into great written messages.  Art also entails helping students recognize the work of great art masters of the past.

Music is offered to all students in grades TK to 4.  Students learn about notes and rests, and learn the language of music.  They sing and express with actions a variety of song types.

Physical Education is introduced in TK and continues through grade 4 helping children develop motor skills and games.

While PE is taught each day, the other enrichment areas are on a three day rotation.

Discovery

Spanish is taught every day for 24 minutes in conjunction with 24 minutes for workroom.  In time, students will build on the language and skills taught in Primary.

Music is taught for a trimester (14 weeks). The students are able to continue the work done in Primary to encourage singing, understanding of notes and musical composition.  This enhances the study of fine arts for pentathlon.

Drama is taught for a trimester.  Students are acquainted with cold reading, theater and drama techniques.  In the process, students should have greater skills for presenting research and other work on SWOs.

Technology is taught for a trimester.  Students learn typing stories and research.  They learn about sources on the Internet and other aspects of presenting information.  This is essential for high school and middle school successful project work.

Physical Education is every day as a skill development and sportsmanship opportunity.  A variety of games are taught throughout the year.

In addition, students in grades 5 through 8 are excused from class time to participate in instrumental band as an additional opportunity.

We believe we offer our students an enriched learning opportunity that goes beyond the basic core subjects.  We know it prepares a more well-rounded student and makes learning even more exciting.

This week on TK Island the little fishies took a T-T-Train from the TK island to the Town of T.  They saw all kind of T things like a tiger, turtle, truck, table, tree, tomato, and teeth. They had a terrific time traveling through the town learning all about the letter T and what it sounds like. This week In Science, they are learning about the 4 seasons-what each season looks like, feels like, and what kind of activities they might do in that season.  In math, the students are still exploring numbers 1-5 and are becoming experts everyday by learning tallies, ten frames, number lines, and different objects that represent the number 5.

Some ideas for breakfast are: yogurt and granola, healthy cereal with fruit and milk, breakfast burritos, waffle and fruit, pancakes and eggs.

Phase One

This week, students learned all about United States symbols, landmarks, and monuments.  Students created different symbols such as the Statue of Liberty, Uncle Sam, and the Eagle. Ask your student what they learned this week!

In the front office, we have a picture of an artist version of our renovation project.  It shows the administration building, the gym, and in the background is our two story Primary and Discovery schools.  It does not show what the main part of Clover buildings will look like when they are changed into the new place for our high school, but it is good view of things to come.

What is important to know is that the project is slated for $30,350,000.  Unfortunately the cost of construction is so high the cost does not include the new gym.  That would be an additional $4,000,000.  The money for the project is coming from several sources: we obtained about $9,000,000 in charter facility funding and energy conservation money, Measure S earmarked $2,000,000 for the charter school renovation, and Measure B is expected to contribute about $23,000,000 to the project.  Needless to say, the Measure B bonds was for many other schools other than ours.  It was a bond for $82,000,000 and we are grateful for the money that has been allocated to us.

We are also grateful to the parents, staff, and students, who are working well as we deal with noise, street changes, and dust and dirt as the construction continues.  We believe the construction crew is excellent and works very efficiently.  It is exciting to see buildings start to take shape.  The two story building is expected to be ready for move in during the month of February.

Car Line Safety

Dear Parents,

“Car Line” is still causing everyone an inconvenience this year, as this week was worst than most! It is the 6th week of school and it has already been addressed at “Back to School Night,” that parents need to go get in “Car Line and go “South on Mae”…”STOP” at the that stop sign (that was recently put back up because of construction and follow the traffic laws) and then proceed “West” on Beverly. This being a TWO WAY Stop, instead of a Four way Stop makes it extremely difficult, as your fellow teachers and staff can only do so much to prevent a tragic event from happening!!!

Please take this as a friendly reminder and a HUGE “Thank You” to all parents that are still following ALL traffic laws to keep everyone safe. Concerns will once again be addressed with the Tracy Police Department as well!

Also, “Thank You” to the parents that reached out to The Tracy Learning Center. We here are hoping to solve this problem with “Car Line” soon with everyone’s help and cooperation!

Phase 1

This continued to be a busy learning week for Phase One!  In Social Studies, students learned all about California symbols and landmarks.  Some even went on a virtual field trip to The Museum of California Symbols!  They sang the California song, “I Love You, California!” and created different symbols such as the California Flag, California Poppy flower, Redwood Forest, San Francisco Bridge, and others.   Did you know that the largest tree in the world is in California?  Yes! It is a giant sequoia called the General Sherman located in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park in Tulare County.  Ask your student what they learned!

We are looking for donations for our Homecoming parade.  Please look in your red folders on Monday for more information.

We are also looking for sponsors for our 2nd Annual Read-a-thon.  Please look in your green folders for more information.

Thank you for your continued support!

Our 4th grade leadership students have been selected for the month of September.  Last week we worked on campus beautification and picked up garbage all along the front of our school.  They did a great job!  Our leadership students also thought of a very special donation project…details will come soon!

We are learning about different animal groups and adaptations this week.  Did you know not all birds can fly?  And a bat is a mammal, not a bird!  In music, Mrs. Watson brought in different types of drums and our phase 2 students had an awesome drum circle!

Discovery Charter School

Another great week for Discovery Students!  We began the week by learning about a historical event in Chile in a presentation by Ms. Rapoza, followed by a Chilean feast.  Thank you to all who provided the food; it was a great experience for the students and staff.  We are wrapping up our first spirit week of the year with Football Friday and our first Staff vs. DCS Students Flag Football game.  Look for pictures next week.

Reminders: we still have our Mixed Bags fund raiser for Science Camp.  All orders are due on September 22.  These make great gifts!

Please be sure to check your child’s agenda.  There is specific information in there, including grades.  Students should be writing down due dates and homework.

Mr. Williams

Language Arts:

Students in all language arts classes continued their work with diagramming and grammar this week. In our weekly essays students are learning to express themselves clearly and cogently. Their writing is already improving! Classes also spent time reviewing the regions of Africa and music of Africa. All classes are continuing our novel, A Long Walk to Water, and working diligently to unravel and understand the complex Sudanese culture.

DHSP General:

All of DHSP has been participating in a Spirit Week this week! The students are dressing up and showing their support for their dens and for the theme of the day. Spirit week will come to a close Friday with a rally and a Student vs. Staff football game! Pictures to come.

Virginia’s Voice

Charter schools are public schools. They are free for all students. They do not have boundaries but they do have to hold lotteries based on preferences. The Tracy Learning Center is comprised of three charter schools: Primary (TK-4), Discovery ( 5-8) and Millennium (9-12). While each school is unique, we hold the same mission and values. We are student centered, we provide quality education that is enriched with extras at all levels and schools, and we are determined to help every student succeed. We utilized technology, projects, and interactive group activities but most of all we provide quality instructors who work diligently to plan their instruction around a defined rigorous curriculum.

Unfortunately, we are a popular choice. There are over 700 students on our waiting lists. We sincerely wish we could take all of the students who want to be here, but we have a limit and we are filled at every level. We have an enrollment of 1300 students. Even with construction we cannot expand that number. We appreciate the patience some students and parents have as they wait for a chance to be enrolled. Some students wait from Kindergarten to ninth grade. We do add students at 5th grade ( 30 more can be added) and 9th grade ( 60 more can be added) and that is the best time to be enrolled if a student does not make TK or Kindergarten lotteries.

Board Member Opening

The Tracy Learning Center is now accepting applications for a TLC board member. All interested applicants please send a letter of interest and a resume to 51 E. Beverly Place Tracy, CA 95376- ATTN: Human Resources. Board meets once a month.

Car line Safety

We are very concerned for the students that are continuing to be dropped off near our construction area. Students are getting out of their cars and walking where there aren’t any sidewalks. This is very dangerous and is a huge risk for your child. Please do not drop off your child or allow your child to walk anywhere near the construction site.

We have had several calls this week about students being dropped off and running across the street. This is so dangerous and we are very worried a child could be hit by a car. Please make your child’s safety your priority! Never ever allow or ask your child to run across the street!

Annual Golf Tournament

Good morning and Happy Friday!

I’m excited for this year’s tournament and the changes that we have made. We will be hosting the 3rd Annual Millennium Athletics Golf Tournament at Dublin Ranch on Sunday September 24th! This tournament will be a 4 man scramble with a two drive minimum. Shotgun will be at 9 am so my Raider fans can get home in time for kick off at 5:30! 49ERS play that Thursday and the Cowboys play Monday so let’s play some golf for a good cause!

If you plan to play, please register no later than September 1st. I have to give my final head count by the 8th. If you could also do me a favor and tell all of your golf buddies about this tournament we’d greatly appreciate it. We have attached the flyer as well as the registration form so you can spread the word whether it is email or social media.

On behalf of Millennium Athletics, we thank you for your continued support!!

T K

This week on TK Island the little fishies have learned how to explore the Island by using their 5 senses. They have learned the importance of each sense and how we use them to explore things around us. In language arts, we have learned all about the letter C-what it looks like, sounds like, and words that begin with that letter. In math, the students are becoming experts at recognizing and writing their numbers to 5. It has been a very busy week on TK Island!

Primary Charter

Initial Phase

Having a healthy classroom is important to us in P-6! We have had many students out sick this week. We want everyone to stay healthy! Please do not send your student to school if they are not feeling well. Additionally, students must be fever free (no fever reducing medications) for at least 24 hours before they return to school. This will help ensure that we are not spreading germs and keeping our classroom healthy! We have taught students of ways to make sure that they aren’t spreading germs; here are some strategies they know:

“Cough and sneeze in your elbow.” – Alayah

“Use hand sanitizer after you blow your nose.” – Daniela

“Don’t put your hands in your mouth or eyes or nose.” – Gabriel

Phase 2

Our 4th grade students will be starting their monthly leadership duties next week. Every month each phase 2 class picks three 4th grade students who will join leadership for the whole month. These students do special projects around our campus such as campus beautification and other community building projects.

DCS and DHSP PE

Next Friday, September 15th, at lunch (11:45) we will be having our annual “Staff vs. DCS (6-8th grade) Students Football Game.” We will be having a double lunch that day and should be tons of FUN!!! The game will be 7 on 7 with Flags. Sadly, the NFL did not have a grant to apply for again this year, however to kick off the “Football Season” for the NFL, college and our high school football team, we will still have our annual “Football Friday.”

Discovery

This short week went by really quickly! Students have been very busy and it is beginning to feel a bit like fall. Next week we have Football Week to celebrate the first high school game of the season; we also will have our first spirit week put together by our new Leadership team.

Students are encouraged to dress for spirit days. They are as follows:

Monday- Pajama day (please only hard soled slippers)

Tuesday- Twin Day

Wednesday- Wacky Wednesday (mismatched day, funny hair, etc.)

Thursday- Den Day (Wear your den shirts/colors

Friday- Football attire (Wear a jersey or t-shirt with your favorite team.)

Monday, 9/11/2017 is our Chilean guest and food event. If students are bringing food, please have it in the office no later than 10am.

September is Attendance Awareness Month!

Good attendance is an important key to academic success. For every day missed, students can potentially fall farther behind in school. Please review the attendance policy at: http://tlchome.weebly.com/school-handbooks.html

Speech and Debate Judges Needed!! Our Millennium Speech and Debate team continues to grow and thrive. This year, we have a 56-person team, and new members are still being added! We are so excited to travel to tournaments and to spread the TLC name even farther and wider this year than ever before. By the end of last season, we were ranked 8th in our district, out of 26 schools — in just three years, we’ve cracked the top ten…and we want more!

In order to register as many students as we have this year for our tournaments, and thus continue to win, we are required to provide volunteer judges at the tournaments we attend. No experience is necessary to judge! Teachers make great judges, and so do parents, scoutmasters, pastors, and anyone with a stake in student success. Our next tournament is 9/16 at Lodi High School. We have 38 students competing in 51 events. That means that we need 5-10 judges to volunteer at this tournament to “cover” our registration.

FUTURE TOURNAMENT DATES 10/14 – Enochs High School, Modesto, 11/4 – Mountain House High School, Mountain House* 12/2 – Buhach Colony High School, Buhach Colony 1/20 – Bear Creek High School, Stockton 2/23 (PM) – 2/24 – Turlock High School, Turlock 3/9 (PM) – 3/10 – Enochs High School, Modesto If interested or for more information, contact Ms. Beth Lamanna at blamanna@tracylc.net

The event takes place on Friday, September 15th from 9am – 4pm. This field trip is open to 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. We have completed our first month of school.  We are very pleased with the start of the year.  We appreciate parent patience as we deal with construction and road work at the same time.  All of you are doing well.  We have noticed that construction removed the stop sign at the corner of Beverly and Mae, however that is an important stop which should be returned to the corner soon!

Some special things that have happened so far this year:

  • Preschool parents met for a work day last Saturday and beautified the outdoor area.
  • Preschool was voted Best in Tracy
  • TK is off to a fantastic, mature beginning.
  • Kindergarten students look like they have been here for months!
  • Primary students in Phase One and Two are demonstrating great writing and math skills. They continue to have opportunities to be enriched in music, art, and PE and this year we have added Spanish.
  • Discovery students are enjoying studying the music and geography of Africa
  • For the second year, DCS has the advantage of a counselor
  • Discovery students have the new opportunity to learn from our array of enrichment teachers

(music, drama, and technology) and are involved in learning Spanish every day.

  • Picture day was a success
  • Our first fire drill of the year was amazingly successful.
  • MHS is enjoying their new temporary site and had a successful club rush week, first rally, and are beginning their band and athletic events.
  • MHS was awarded a Bronze Medal by US News and World Report for their outstanding results in 2014.

We look forward to new exciting benchmarks of excellence each month.  Thank you for your continued support of our schools.

This week in Language Arts classes are continuing their study of Africa regions and music. Students are enthusiastic about learning a new culture and look forward to demonstrating their skill as the year progresses. Both classes are making headway in our novel A Long Walk to Water and are enjoying vigorous discussion about the notion of water conservation and war in poverty-stricken areas.

We just finished our fourth week of school at Millennium and have adjusted well to our “new” surroundings. Just a reminder to families that drivers should not be stopping on Corral Hollow to drop off or pick up students or obstructing the exit. Also, students need to wear helmets if they ride bikes to school.  Police officers will be ticketing those who do not wear safety helmets.

Our homework support room is up and running! Homework support is available after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 4:15pm – 5pm in Mrs. Griffin’s room D2.  It’s a great opportunity for students to work on or received additional help with their homework, or even earn community service hours for tutoring others in need. There is no cost to attend this free resource for homework support.
