Virginia Stewart

The staff at Tracy Learning Center wishes you and your family a happy holiday season and a very good new year.  As all of us reflect on the year, we all come up with things we wished we had done better.  That is the heart of New Year resolutions.  It is important to be realistic, to look at what we are doing and to make changes.  Growth is an important part of life.  We, at TLC, continually look at how we can improve and work to make changes that will make things better.  Schools that never change, never improve.  We appreciate your support of our school and our programs and we value you and your children.

Speaking of changes, we look so forward to seeing the actual physical changes to our TLC Beverly School Site and we thank the District and Construction Crew for a job that seems to be going very well.

It is very difficult to squeeze all we do into the short time and the limited facilities we have.  We do our best.

Speaking of facilities, we see great progress happening in the construction area.  We are getting excited about the thought of moving into the two story building.  That building will house both Primary and Discovery.  It will be wonderful.

We are all looking forward to the annual Father/Daughter Dance.  We know there are many excited girls looking forward to a date with dad!

Many thanks for your continued patience with limited parking and car line struggles…. Before you know it the construction will be done.

This week on TK island we traveled on TK airlines around the world to New York, France, and Mexico to learn about their holiday traditions. We learned that in Mexico they have a parade called Los Posadas that last for nine days. Also, they hit a pinata full of nuts, fruits, and candies.  The little fishies really enjoyed hitting a pinata and collecting all the goodies.  In France, they put their shoes in front of the fireplace and they get filled with treats.  Stay tuned til next week as we fly to other countries around the world.

Primary Charter

Initial Phase:

Welcome back! We hope everyone enjoyed their week of with family and friends! P-6 students had got a surprise visit from their elf named Snowflake! She has been hiding in silly places in our classroom all week! This week we made reindeer in a directed drawing lesson and then wrote a short story about our reindeer. Students even got to name their reindeer. All of the reindeer look so cute hanging up in the classroom! In science this we have been doing STEM challenges! Students planned, built, and experimented making rafts. They had so much fun problem solving and getting their rafts to float! Don’t forget the last day of school before break is Friday, December 15th!

Phase 1:

We are impressed with how focused our students returned from Fall Break!  Students returned excited to see an Elf visiting their classroom!  Students wrote letters to the Elf and did different Elf activities.  Ask your students what their classroom’s Elf’s name is!   Some students also had the opportunity to write letters to Santa.  It was fun to read the different things students were asking for and why they felt they deserved what they wanted.

Our first field trip will be to Old Sacramento and the Train Museum on Wednesday, December 13th.  Permission slips were due today.  If you have not turned in your child’s permission slip please do so as soon as possible.  We will be sending chaperone information next week.  Remember, in order to be able to chaperone you must be cleared to volunteer in the office.

Please remember to send a healthy snack and drink on your assigned day.  If you forget, your child’s class might not have a snack on that day.  Thank you in advance!

Phase 2:

Welcome back!  This week we started out social studies unit on government.  We learned about democracy and why we have a government.  Ask your child what they know about the 3 branches of government.  This week our 4th grade leadership students went around to all of the PCS classrooms and collected the food for our Brighter Christmas food drive.  They were impressed with how much we’ve collected so far!  We are accepting donations until December 13th.  Please use this opportunity to discuss the spirit of giving with your child.  We appreciate any and all donations!

Have a great weekend!

Primary Music

Hello Primary Families,

All Kindergarten through 4th grade students should have brought a letter home about our Winter Music Program.  This is an overview.

The TLC Winter Music Program will be on Thursday, December 14, for student’s K through 4.  The performances will be held in the gym.

The Kindergarten students will perform at 1:00 pm, during the school day.  They need to come to school dressed in their performance clothing.  There will not be time to change during the school day.  They may dress in holiday outfits.  Please make sure they can still do all their other school activities.  There will be no PE that day.

The students in grades 1 through 4 will perform beginning at 6:30 pm. The Phase 1 students (Rooms P2, P5, and P7) will perform at 6:00.  Please drop off these students at their regular classroom by 5:45 pm.  The teachers will walk them to and from the gym.  Please plan on picking up your child from their classroom after the performance.  Phase 2 students (Rooms P1, P3 & P8) will perform immediately after the Phase 1 students. We should be ready to start around 6:20 pm.  Please make sure these students are in their classrooms by 6:00 pm.  They will return to their rooms after the performance, you will pick them up at their classroom.

Students will be encouraged to wear holiday attire for the performance.  It is not a requirement.  Nice clothes are fine.  They can include Santa hats or elf hats.   Reindeer headbands will be up to teacher discretion, if they block the view of students behind them, they will not be allowed.  The hats and headbands should not have flashing lights, play music, or have any movement, so as to not be distracting.

Our TK students will be doing their performance on Wednesday, December 13, at 8:45 am.  Please have them wear their holiday clothes to school.

I am hoping to have all the song accompaniments on the TLC website, so the students can practice at home.  Link to follow soon.  The lyrics were attached to the letters that were sent home.

You and your students can find the music available for download on the Primary webpage:

Primary – Winter Program Music

I look forward to sharing your children’s musical talents with you!

Thank you to the parents that came for Parent Teacher Student Conferences.  We enjoyed meeting with each of you.  If you were unable to meet for conferences, your son or daughter’s report card will be arriving in the mail shortly.

Those students with good behavior and have not met with Mrs. Stewart or the ROAR teams enjoyed a fun afternoon of movie watching and popcorn eating in the gym.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break and we will see you back to school on Monday, November 27th.

Discovery Charter School

Tracy’s Brighter Christmas

Next week, December 4th-8th, DCS and DHSP will be joining Primary Charter School and Millennium High School in their efforts to collect canned food items for Tracy’s Brighter Christmas community organization. Schools across Tracy work together to help supply families in need during the holiday season with food items that will later be paired with gifts specific to each qualifying family’s needs. Last year 600 families in Tracy benefited from the generosity of schools like ours. We can’t wait to see how many canned food items get collected to make this holiday season a little brighter for our fellow community members!

Each of the homeroom teachers has a box for donated food items.   Hopefully we can increase last year’s impressive donations.

Important dates:

Saturday, December 2, 2017- Daddy/Daughter Dance 6-8 pm

Winter Break- December 20, 2017-January 2, 2018

Please continue to check your student’s agenda.  Classes are in full swing and students are busy with projects and tests and homework.

Language Arts:

This week in Language Arts, we are picking up where we left off before break. Students are learning and practicing new diagramming and grammar skills as well as reading comprehension skills. They will be receiving a new book club book very shortly, but in the meantime, they have been assigned a book club project, which will be due December 11th. Additionally, we are continuing our reading of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, and students are continuing their study of literary elements and devices. Lastly, they received a new essay this week; this is a persuasive essay that may require extra research, though some has already been conducted as a class. They are expected to support their opinion with factual evidence. Please encourage your student to finish out 2017 strong and to continue making positive goals for the upcoming new year!

Students tested their handmade popsicle-stick bridges this week and it was a major success! Some even help up to 100 lbs! Great job students!
