We are getting ready for the move to our new school.  It is lovely and very exciting but we will need your cooperation to be successful.

I am setting two half days to help us get organized in the new rooms.

Primary will have an early release day on Friday, February 23.  They will be dismissed at 11:30.  Lunch will NOT be served. There will be no child care (Kid’s Club) available that day.  Students can NOT go to P6 to wait for their siblings. All children must be picked up at 11:30am.

Discovery will have an early release day on Wednesday, February 28.  They will be dismissed at 11:00.  There will be no study club or after school care (Kid’s Club) available that day.  All students must be picked up.

We are attempting to give you as much notice as possible although of course these dates are subject to change if there are any construction delays!

Also notice that car line will be changing once we move to the location on Mae Street and of course new things will require some patience and understanding, but we will be up and running well soon.  Please be kind and patient as we adjust.  It will be well worth it.

The kitchen is being remodeled in the next phase, so lunches will be different and easier to prepare.  This will mean we may have more pizza days or “bag lunch” days.  Again this will be for the next phase and then we will be back in full swing.  It will require your understanding and patience as well.

We have a super group of parents, students and staff and together we can make this move easy and wonderful if we all work together.

Sick Students

Just a reminder…please does not send your child to school until he/she has been 24 hours fever free. We continue to have kids tell us his/her parent gave them fever reducing medication that morning before school.

If your child is suffering  from fever, body aches,  sore throat and or  continues coughing he or she is most likely contagious and we really ask that you keep your sick children home for his/her recovery and to reduce the risk of spreading this illness.

T K

This week on TK island we had a blast celebrating our 100th day of school! The little fishes came dressed up as old people, including their extremely old teachers. They had a hundred-day snack, made hats, played bingo, did plenty of counting to 100. The little fishes brought mystery bags full of 100 items and gave clues to help us figure what was in the bag. They finished the day with a scavenger hunt of 100 items.  We had so much fun celebrating being 100 days smarter

Primary Charter

The Crab Feed is just around the corner!  This is TLC’s biggest fundraiser of the year and we appreciate all the support.  It is a great evening of fun and food so we hope to see you there.  Thank you for supporting TLC and our fabulous students

Initial Phase:

Did you know that reading is with children is extremely beneficial? Just spending a little time each day to have quiet reading time can help your child in so many areas. We encourage our families to read for twenty minutes each day. Reading before bed is a fun and easy way to incorporate daily reading time. Make it part of your bedtime routine- your child will look forward to that special time with you every night. It doesn’t matter who reads: your student can read to you or you can read to him/her or you can take turns reading. When children read with their parents it helps prepare them for formal literacy instruction, introduces vocabulary, builds important foundation skills, provides a model of fluent, expressive reading, and helps young children recognize what reading for pleasure is all about. Additionally, parental involvement in their child’s reading has been found to be the most important determinant of language and emergent literacy. Bottom line… try to make reading a part of everyday!
Phase 2:
Our 4th grade leadership students are still collecting donations for the military.  They are excited to mail them off next week.  Thank you to everyone who has donated.  Please remember that our phase 2 students eat lunch at 1:00 so they need a good breakfast and a filling snack.  Our students love the following snacks:  fruit, crackers, cheese, or granola/breakfast bars.  Thank you for your snack donations, our students appreciate it!

Charter Schools were created to allow for change in educational Practices.  This next week is National Charter School Week.  Parents who select Charter schools are making a choice.  Charter schools are not for everyone and there are significant differences among charter schools since they are founded for many different focuses or reasons.  Some cater to high risk students, low income students, gifted students or other target groups.

This article was written by the National Charter Schools Association.  The dark letters are our individual explanations of our charters here at TLC.

Charter schools are public schools, funded by taxpayers, and do not charge tuition. Charter schools must accept all students who enroll, as long as space is available.

We would be so happy if we could accept all students who apply.  Unfortunately we have a limit of space.  We accept students on a lottery basis.  It is possible for a student to be on our wait list for years.  We are sad about that, but the reality is our limited space.  We enroll approximately 1300 students TK to 12.  The wait list is over 800 students.

Although they are public schools, charter schools different from traditional, district-managed public schools in several ways.

We have a focus of meeting the needs of all students.  We individualize instruction through group instruction and multiage groups in grades 1-8.  Students are taught at the appropriate level of instruction to promote progress.  We believe if students are taught at the right level, they can learn.  We want higher achieving students to be challenged with above grade level work while those who are behind can feel good about receiving the remediation they need for future success.  We do not use textbooks, rather we rely on interactive and group work in the classroom directed by the teacher using a variety of instructional resources including the use of technology.

For example, charter schools are not always created or managed by school districts. In many states, state authorizing boards, universities, mayors, and nonprofit organizations can also authorize the opening of a new charter school. These entities create contracts with the schools, which set specific goals and metrics the schools must meet in order to remain open.

Tracy Learning Center charters (Primary, Discovery and Millennium) are independent charters.  We are directly funded and are not under the authority of the Tracy Unified School District except that they are our authorizer.  The District approves our charters.  They must be renewed every five years.  The district reviews our finances and instructional outcomes once a year.  The Tracy Learning Center has its own Board who approves spending and policies.

In return for agreeing to meet these goals, charter schools are provided with the freedom to be more innovative in their instructional practices, themes, curriculum, and educational methods.

Surprisingly there are very few actual freedoms charters have.  We are required to follow all rules for teacher credentialing and other California state laws and Ed Code.  We do feel the freedom to teach curriculum as we see fit and not follow adopted textbooks used in the districts.  We are responsible to make progress in state testing outcomes.

There are nearly 7,000 charter schools across America, serving 2.6 million children. 44 states allow for the creation of public charter schools.

The Tracy Learning Center is comprised of three charter schools.  Discovery Charter was first of the three and was started in 2001.  It was one of the earliest charters in California.  We are fortunate that California provides avenues for charter schools.

Primary Charter

Initial Phase:

Can you believe that we are just about halfway through the school year? The 100th Day of School celebration was so much fun! We loved seeing all the kids in their capes and dressed like old people, there were so many creative ideas this year! P6 even won minute to win it on our 100th day! We were the quickest at sorting 100 M&Ms by color! Students made gumball machines filled with 100 gumballs and self-portraits of what they think they will look like when they are 100 years old! We had a blast and look forward to how much more growth we will see in the next 100 days!

Phase 1:

Students are 100 days smarter! Thursday, January 18, 2018 was the 100th day of school. We loved all the creative 100 year old outfits and the necklaces made of 100 items. Each class did different activities using the number 100 to celebrate this special day.

This week students learned about Martin Luther King Jr.  They learned about his life and how he helped our country. Students also continued to learn about economics in social studies. Ask them the difference between a good and service. We’ll continue economics next week.

AR goals are right around the corner. Remember, students can take quizzes on books they read at home.

Phase 2:

We loved all of the creative 100th day shirts that our 3rd and 4th graders made!  This week our students learned about creating a government and some classes even created a bill that they hope will become a law in the classroom.  Throughout our government unit, our students have learned why teamwork and communication are so important.

COSMOS is an intensive four-week summer residential program for students who have demonstrated an aptitude for academic and professional careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. Talented and motivated students completing grades 8-12 have the opportunity to work with renowned faculty, researchers and scientists in state-of-the-art facilities, while exploring advanced STEM topics far beyond the courses usually offered in California high schools. Through challenging curricula that are both hands-on and lab intensive, COSMOS fosters its students’ interests, skills, and awareness of educational and career options in STEM fields.

Students apply to one of the four University of California’s COSMOS campuses — UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz. While each campus employs the best practices in STEM education, the curriculum of each program builds on the unique teaching and research expertise of its faculty and host campus. Each campus can only accommodate about 160-200 participants, so selection is competitive. A typical COSMOS student has a GPA of 3.5 or above. Students must have achieved academic excellence.  Applications are open now at: https://cosmos-ucop.ucdavis.edu/app/main/page/application-info

Proposition 64 is now law and recreational use of Marijuana for persons 21 or older is now considered legal from a “State” perspective. What does this mean for your county, your district, and/or your school? How will you address these changes?

The long and short answer is that not much has change for schools with the passage of Proposition 64. For schools precedent has been set by Federal Laws outlined in the Drug Free Schools Act and by California Education Code.

  1. Federal law still considers marijuana to be an illegal substance and in California must be kept 1000 feet away from campuses.
  2. California education code has not been modified or changed in anyway related to student marijuana offenses.
  3. The 1997 Opinion from the Attorney Generalstill provides guidance regarding expulsions for first offenses possession of marijuana. This no longer results in expulsion, but it is considered a matter for disciplinary action.
  4. Tracy Learning Center has moved to a restorative justice approach for students who have violated drug and alcohol policies and this is  considered a BEST PRACTICE approach in education today. Our goal as educators needs to be addressing barriers that are preventing students from being successful in school. Exclusionary policies tend to do the opposite and negatively impact minority students at a greater rate than other subgroups.

It remains the belief of the Tracy Learning Center that Marijuana use among teens is harmful in that it reduces motivation and connectedness with issues of importance for success in school.

This week on TK island we’ve had a lot of great visitors visit the island.  We had a sheriff deputy, firefighter, dentist, produce worker, dance instructor, reiki energy healer, hair stylist, and a FedEx driver.

The little fishies had an amazing time learning from all of these wonderful community helpers and they absolutely loved that they were able to be models and touch some of their tools and gear.

Also, the little fishies loved learning how to be prepared in case of an emergency and who to call if it is an emergency.  Thank you to all the community helpers that made our week so special and enjoyable; full of lots of important information.

Primary Charter

REMINDER: No school this Monday, January 15th for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Initial phase:

Having a healthy classroom is important to us in P-6! We have had many students out sick this week. We want everyone to stay healthy! Please do not send your student to school if they are not feeling well. Additionally, students must be fever free (no fever reducing medications) for at least 24 hours before they return to school. This will help ensure that we are not spreading germs and keeping our classroom healthy!

Phase 2:

Our phase 2 students are learning about government and the different roles and responsibilities of our elected leaders.  This is a great topic to talk about with your child…discuss different laws, rules, and why we have those laws.  You’ll be surprised with what they know!

Our students are working on creating mandalas in art and the colors and details are amazing!  Good job!

Remember, we are asking phase 2 students to create and wear a “100th day” shirt for Thursday.  We’re excited to see their creativity!

If your student is planning to participate in Academic Pentathlon competition this year, encourage them to study their notes. Memorization will not lead to a deeper understanding of these difficult concepts; the more they read their notes and take the time to understand what they mean, the better your student will perform at competition and remember later on.

California State Summer School for
Mathematics and Science

Program Dates: SUMMER 2018
July 8-August 4, 2018
*UCI closing date is August 3rd, 2018

Applications are open now at:

Virginia Stewart

Welcome to a new year and half way through the school year.  It is a great time to reflect on what went well the first half of the year and what could be better the second half.  I have asked the teachers to do the same thing.

As parents we can ask:

  • Do I keep informed as to how my student is doing in classes? ( Primary uses the folders, the rest have parents directly access grade books on Aeries.)
  • Do I provide a quiet time for homework or study each night
  • Do I check homework or at least be assured it was done
  • Do I e-mail teachers if I have a question about something (That is the best way to communicate with staff)
  • Do I structure time at home for study, free time, and a regular bedtime?
  • Do I plan the time in the morning for dressing, breakfast and arriving to school on time?

The communication between school and home is important and helps to increase the chances of school success for students.  As a student get older, they often try to keep parents out of the study, homework, school work loop.  While some of that is understandable.  Checking grades weekly is a way to allow for trust with some accountability.

T K

This week on TK island has been wonderful! They came back from break ready to learn and have fun! They earned their ten dots quickly at the beginning of the week and was on fire for their elective teachers. This week in science, the little fishes learned all about how to be great community helpers, like police officers, firefighters, doctors, and teachers.  Next week, TK will have visits from an orthodontist, police officer, fire fighters, postal worker, hair stylist, and produce worker.

Initial Phase:

Welcome back! We hope everyone enjoyed their break! It was so nice seeing all the smiling faces back in P6! We are very excited about being back at school and are looking forward to what 2018 has to offer! P6 earned a marble party right before break so we celebrated being back at school with a marble party on Tuesday! Students learned about resolutions and everyone made their own New Year resolution. We jumped right back in and continued right where we left off with our curriculum and the students didn’t miss a beat!

Phase One

Happy New Year!  We hope everyone had a wonderful winter break!  We were impressed with how well our students transitioned back into the routine!  They all seemed excited and ready to be back in school!  This week we learned about New Year’s and different traditions around the world!  They learned about Resolutions and made their own New Year’s resolutions!  They also started a project where they wrote their resolutions! We can’t wait to send them home for you to see!

Phase 2:

Welcome back!  Our students are excited to continue our unit on government.  We have also assigned new AR goals and were glad to see that many students read over the break…good job!  Please remember that we would like our 3rd and 4th grade students to be fluent in multiplication facts.  There are many online games and apps to help with this.  You can also keep flashcards in the car and review for a few minutes every day!

Please note there is no school on Monday, January 15th, on Martin Luther King, JR. Day!
