VERY IMPORTANT

Happy Spring.  Enjoy the time off with your children.  When we return there will be many important events and the end of the year will come before we know it.  I had the pleasure of previewing the Preschool art show today.  It is amazing how much our preschoolers have learned about color, lines and sculpture.  I was so impressed.  The TK children are reading word families and are quite enthusiastic about learning.  Our Primary children had fun searching for eggs and understanding the limits of how many they could find!   The Discovery students in 5-6 and 7-8 have done a great job studying for Pentathlon Africa.  I know that we have all learned so much from this enrichment curriculum.  I also believe it will benefit us in future classes.

Thank you for all you do to support your children and our schools.

This week on TK island we had a fun-filled egg-cellent week! The little fishies learned all about Architects….They even became architects!  So, they began to build their dream home on the island.  First, they made a blueprint. Then, they drew a model of what their home would look like.  Lastly, as a group, they began to build a model of their dream home. Also, this week they had a visit from the Easter Bunny and had an egg hunt! They had a hopping good time!

Random Thoughts!

Rain and a time change make for a long and difficult week, but we are very pleased with the way the students have managed inside lunches and limited outdoor time.

The first PEP (new parent club meeting) was held this week.  The attendance was great and the enthusiasm of parents was infectious.  There will be several projects we will ask for parents to volunteer to help us do once the construction is finished.  In the meantime, we need to be patient with fences and big construction trucks blocking us.

Many thanks to the parents who have donated money for our wish list.  We have been able to purchase book cases, chairs and tables for some of the classrooms. The office furniture, which is very lovely was a donation as well.  It has made our front office the welcoming, warm place we want it to be.

I have been working on meeting with each student in the high school to review their transcripts and plan the next year in high school. It is very special to see how well some of the students are doing. I am especially pleased to see some of the Discovery students who struggled to do well grown up and doing very well in high school.

The new buildings are so nice and the feeling of being a school for Primary is definitely a plus.  The 7/8 Discovery students are experiencing moving from class to class in a contained hallway and are adjusting.

One more week until Spring Break.  I am certain you will all enjoy some time away from the routine of getting to school and pick ups etc…but thank you for the great job you are all doing with car line!

This week on TK island we had such an amazing week! We reviewed all the concepts that the little fishies had learned this year, oh boy it was a lot! These little fishies are so very smart and eager to learn more. In Science, they learned about things to do in Spring, so they built a kite and learned that it was made in China to measure distance and wind. The highest kite flew 14, 509 ft in the beautiful sky of Canada. The little fishies went outside and were able to test their kites on this windy day!

Primary Charter

Primary Charter School is competing for a $5,000 grant to fund our school’s green spaces and landscaping planters. Be sure to vote for our school every day between NOW and March 23rd at MyScholarDollars.com and help us secure these funds! Your student should have brought home a flyer this week with more information. Thank you for your support!

Thank you so much to all the parents who came to conferences this week! We loved meeting with you and getting to talk about all of the great things your children do every day! It’s hard to believe that we are already starting the third trimester! We can’t wait to see what students will accomplish by the end of their kindergarten year! Don’t forget that we only have one more week until Spring Break! Students will get two weeks off for this break; it goes from March 24th to April 8th!

Phase One had fun learning about volcanoes this week! Here is P4’s volcano.

Phase 2 students were hard at work this week…learning, drawing, and presenting information about famous Americans and we loved our Complementary Cat pictures in art!

The move is complete and students are getting used to our new building.  It was a busy time with the move and the end of Trimester 2.

Don’t forget Science Olympiad is Saturday, March 17th at McNair High School in Stockton.  If parents plan to stay for the entire event they are advised to bring chairs.  With potential rain, events may need to be held inside where there is no seating.

Spring break is March 26th through April 6th.  School resumes Monday, April 9th.

Mark your calendars, our annual Jog-A-Thon is on Friday, April 27th.  More information to come.

Car line is going well. Please remember to pull all the way forward and please do not drop students off in the street.  This is a serious safety issue we want all of  our students to be safe.

General Update:

-Spring break is just one week away!

-3rd Trimester has begun

-Jogathon is April 27th!

Language Arts:

This week we have begun Trimester 3! Students are continuing their study of art history by learning about new art movements, the techniques artists use in their vocabulary for the week, and through their essay this week, which is asking them to conduct formal and contextual analysis on a work of African art. Students are honing their skills and gearing up for the Academic Pentathlon competition, which is fast approaching! Encourage your students to maintain good study habits and organization to finish out the year strong. A new trimester is a new beginning, and it is a great opportunity to start off with a clean slate.

Math:

We did a pi day competition this week, 3.14 in honor of the unique number pi, who could memorize the most digits in the number pi. Each class had a 1st place, Julianna Sanchez memorizing 98 digits, Emely Hernandez memorizing 87 digits, and Pierce Real memorizing 165!!! Making Pierce our record high!!!

This week on TK island we learned about African Animals. We did an animal research paper on giraffes and zebras, elephants and hippos, hyenas and lions, ostrich and flamingos. We learned about how some of the animals are similar and different, what they look like, eat, live, and how they move. Giraffes are the tallest, but elephants are the largest mammals. The elephant and hippos are endangered because of their ivory. TK really enjoyed learning about different animals in Africa.

Primary Charter

Don’t forget that parent/teacher conferences are next week! We look forward to meeting with everyone! We asked some students what they like about our new school and classroom. Here is what they had to say:

“I really like that the bathroom is very close to us.” -Daniela

“I like that we get our own water fountain.” -Korin
“We have a bigger play area and it’s really cool!” -Christopher A.
“I like that we don’t have to sit on the ground for iPads anymore. We have a big table that we can sit at now.” -Molly
“The big TV is what I really like!” -Noble

Phase One had a great week! In Writer’s Workshop they had various spring prompts to write about, like their favorite spring activity to do and what they plan to do on spring break. In Language Arts, the groups reviewed what they learned this trimester, by having a trimester 2 grammar review and worked on projects for the books they read. In Math, groups worked on time and addition with regrouping. In Science, the students learned about natural disasters, focusing on earthquakes and tornadoes. Ask your students what they remember about natural disasters.

All three classes are getting back into the groove of school in our new rooms. It has been an adjustment, and we are starting to feel like this is our new “home”. They love their new rooms and campus. The students are enjoying having the play structure back and to have a big area to run around for recess.

Our phase 2 students are learning about American heroes in social studies. We have also been reading about them in language arts and writing biographies. Our 4th grade leadership students have been chosen for March and April and we look forward to seeing what project they come up with!

Please make sure your child has a water bottle labeled with their name on it for PE and recess. Thank you!

VERY IMPORTANT

Our new office number is (209) 290-0511.

Imagine moving into a brand new home!  That is what we just did.  Suddenly some of our furniture looked really shabby or built in book cases in the old rooms were suddenly not available.  Then the wish list started.  Teachers started asking for so many things.  We have ordered some of it, but we have to be careful of our budget.  So, we decided to put together a wish list of things we need but can’t immediately purchase.  If you would like to donate any of the things on our list, we would be so grateful.

In the meantime, we are working with a lender to see if we can secure a 5 million dollar loan to be able to finish the construction project.  The front is supposed to be finished with a regulation gym.  The cost went over the amount being allocated for our campus.  The district has asked us to see if it can be completed with a loan paid for by us. This will be a difficult loan to assume, but we think we can do it if it is approved.

A bit of dispelling of a rumor:

We would like to build a football/soccer field as well as the gym when our construction is finished, the football field will cost about 300,000.  We are taking 20% of fundraising that we do toward this project, but the rest of the fundraisers go to the intended purpose.  So far we have raised 30,000 for the field.

We are also trying to build a playground for exclusive Kindergarten use in the back.  That is why it is on our wish list.

The most expensive school we operate is our Primary School.  We have a ratio of 14 children per teacher which is way below the state allocation.  We pay the difference and we give the students: Spanish, PE, Art and Music electives every day.

Supplies and equipment teachers need at each school is in our budgets each year.  Because we do not buy textbooks we are able to give our teachers competitive salaries and we know they are our most important resource.  We are very fortunate to have very dedicated and committed teachers here at all of our schools.

This week on TK island has been so much fun having a visit from Dr. Seuss and reading a lot of his books this week.  We have read books like The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, The Fox in Socks, Lorax, and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.  They even tried Green Eggs and Ham and at their amaze most kids loved it! We have worked on rhyming and nonsense sentences just like Dr. Seuss. Also, this week in Science the little fishies learned about force and motion how things move and how gravity is all around us.

Initial Phase:

t was our first week in our brand new classroom! We are all settled in and it feels like this has been our home all along.  Students have adjusted well to our new changes. We made beautiful butterflies to hang on our student work wall to go along with the saying: without change there would not be any butterflies! We are so thankful for our new classroom and are enjoying rolling with all the changes this new adventure has brought! Also, don’t forget to send back your conference sign up sheet by Monday! The schedule is made on a first come first served basis!

Phase 1:

Phase One

This week was such a fun week because it was our first week in our new classrooms! The students are very excited to be in their new classrooms. They are also very excited to have our play structure back!

Even with all the excitement of being in our new rooms, we were still hard at work! In Writer’s Workshop the students finished their personal narratives. The students have written some great stories! For Language Arts, the groups had a Trimester 2 grammar review and some finished their book they read at their teacher’s center.  In Math, groups worked on telling time, fractions, measurement and addition with regrouping. In Science, the students learned about clouds and the water cycle.

Phase 2:

We love our new classrooms!  Our students are so excited and treated our new facilities with care and respect.  We appreciate their efforts to keep the new site clean and beautiful!  Please make sure you check your child’s folder for parent teacher conference sign up sheets.  We look forward to meeting with you.

It is official, we have moved.  All K-8 is now in the new building and the old buildings are being destroyed quickly.  We have been looking forward to this day for a long time and it is really nice to finally be in our new building.

Please make sure to check with your student for the map that shows the new car line map.  Carline for Primary and Discovery is now on Mae.  Please make sure that you are pulling into the driveway completely.  Do not allow you students to exit your vehicle in the middle of the street.  Also, please be aware that it could be more efficient if you made a left on Mae instead of waiting for the crossing guard to allow cars through.

We have the same mailing address but there is a new office phone number.  It is (209)290-0511.  Please make a note of it.

We are grateful for your patience as we work out the bugs with the move. It is a large amount of change in a short amount of time.  I know that they will be worked out soon.

Science Olympiad is this weekend! Make sure your student (if they are on the team) is well-rested and has all of the materials they need for their events.

UC Berkeley Summer Experience

UC Berkeley’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions is pleased to announce our annual Berkeley Summer Experience and invites you to nominate your student! Berkeley Summer Experience is an intensive application workshop and information session that is intended to introduce prospective students to the UC application, the admissions process, as well as the UC Berkeley undergraduate experience.

Berkeley Summer Experience will host a residential program for both prospective Freshmen and Transfers on UC Berkeley’s campus on June 15th-17th.

Note: The Berkeley campus program is a residential program and is open to any rising high school junior or senior and California Community College student meeting the eligibility requirements. While the program is free of charge, transportation to the program is not covered and participants will have to provide their own transportation.

To be eligible for the program, each student must be a junior or senior in high school in Fall 2018 and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher; or a community-college transfer student with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and 30 or more transferable semester units by the end of Spring 2018.

Students who are nominated by a counselor or a Community-Based Organization will have priority consideration when we are making selections. All nominated students must also fill out an application.

The application for both students and counselors will be available from April 1st- April 30th. Selected students will be notified in mid-May. If you have any questions, please contact us at berkeleysummerexperience@berkeley.edu.

For more information on the application and nomination process, feel free to view our website.
