We ended up with a very short “winter” and now the Spring season at TLC has kicked off with our annual TLC Jog-A-Thon. I has to take my hat of to all the staff and parents who helped organize such an event. Also, congratulations to our students who did an amazing job out there. Even with all the construction, our staff and students did not let a little dust stop this great fundraiser. I even saw one of our crossing guards out there running a few laps! Good job Mr. Larry!!!
Upcoming Show
Millennium High School Drama Department is pleased to announce our upcoming show, The Best of Broadway! This production will have two showings on Saturday, May 12th at 3pm and also 7pm at the Kimball High school theater. Tickets will be available for purchase one hour before each show at the theater box office. Ticket prices are $10.00 for general admission and $7.00 for Students., Seniors and Kids 10 and under. Thank you for supporting the arts and we look forward to seeing you at the show!

This week on TK island the little fishies learned all about the life cycle of a butterfly. They even have some special visitors come to the island in the form of a caterpillar. The students are observing the caterpillars that will soon be a chrysalis. Before, we know it we will have some butterflies on TK island.

Phase One has a fun week learning about plants! P4 did a fun activity about eating plants. Some math groups are working on perimeter and wrote their names using blocks and had to figure out the perimeter of their name. Finally we ended the week with our 4th Annual Jog-A-Thon.

April is almost over and it looks like the warmer weather may be here to stay. Please keep in mind that allergy season is here; it may be helpful if your student suffers from allergies, to send tissues with them. If you would like to donate tissues to your student’s homeroom, that would be appreciated as well.
Order forms were passed out for the yearbook and the 8th grade dedication pages. Extra copies are in the office, or students can see Ms. Rodieck for additional order forms. Parents may also email Ms. Rodieck for an on-line form as well.
State testing begins Monday, April 30th through May 4th. It would be beneficial if students had a good night sleep and a healthy breakfast during testing. If your students misses school during this time, make up tests will be given the week of May 7th –May 11th.

Save the Date for the upcoming Class of 2018 Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 26th @ 10AM at the St. Bernard’s Holy Family Center located at 12100 W. Valpico Road. Doors will open at 9:30am for seating and tickets are required for entry. All graduates will be given 8 tickets and detailed information regarding their rehearsal the day before and specifics on the morning of the ceremony. The tickets will be distributed to students at their Senior Breakfast on May 18, 2018 along with their cap and gown. There are no additional tickets available for request as seating is extremely limited.

Join us for an evening of laughs at Tracy Learning Center on May 3, 2018, as some our funniest students will showcase their comedic talent. Students in grades 5-12 are welcome to participate. Relay for Life – ONE DAY ONLY Saturday, April 28, 2018 Set-up: Friday afternoon from 4:00pm-7:00pm, Saturday morning from 6:00am-9:00am Event: Saturday 10:00am-11:00pm Tear-down and clean-up: Saturday from 11:00pm until finished. Location: Merrill F. West High School quad area (1775 W. Lowell Ave, Tracy) Volunteers are needed Friday night to set up and all day Saturday to staff the information booth, assist in the Accounting room, help in Kids Camp, staff the luminaria bag booth (sell luminaria bags, fill bags with sand, and set up luminaria display), assist in the Survivor tent, run games and other activities, assist other committees as needed and tear down in the evening. UC Berkeley Summer Experience
UC Berkeley’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions is pleased to announce our annual Berkeley Summer Experience and invites you to nominate your student! Berkeley Summer Experience is an intensive application workshop and information session that is intended to introduce prospective students to the UC application, the admissions process, as well as the UC Berkeley undergraduate experience.
Berkeley Summer Experience will host a residential program for both prospective Freshmen and Transfers on UC Berkeley’s campus on June 15th-17th.
Note: The Berkeley campus program is a residential program and is open to any rising high school junior or senior and California Community College student meeting the eligibility requirements. While the program is free of charge, transportation to the program is not covered and participants will have to provide their own transportation.
To be eligible for the program, each student must be a junior or senior in high school in Fall 2018 and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher; or a community-college transfer student with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and 30 or more transferable semester units by the end of Spring 2018.
Students who are nominated by a counselor or a Community-Based Organization will have priority consideration when we are making selections. All nominated students must also fill out an application.
The application for both students and counselors will be available from April 1st- April 30th. Selected students will be notified in mid-May. If you have any questions, please contact us at berkeleysummerexperience@berkeley.edu.

Thank you to all the parents that came out for our 2nd PEP Meeting. It was small, but nonetheless productive.
We are so excited to announce Family Movie Night!!! Admission is free. Please join us on Friday, June 1st at 6:30 pm. We will be watching the movie Ferdinand under the tented area at the current high school location (1904 Corral Hollow). Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie will start at 7:00 p.m. There will be pizza, hot dogs, nachos, drinks, and of course popcorn for sale. We will definitely need volunteers to help work and coordinate, so be on the lookout for signup sheets. =)
We are also kicking off a Box Tops for Education contest in the Primary classes (TK included). The class that turns in the most Box Tops will win their choice of either a donut or ice cream party! In the future, we will be holding a contest (once a trimester) to keep the Box Tops coming in. You can clip Box Tops from hundreds of products, like Cheerios, Go-Gurt, Nature Valley granola bars, Kleenex Tissue Bundles, and of course, Ziploc. There is a full list of participating products at btfe.com/participating-products. There are millions of dollars in Box Tops products out there just waiting to be clipped. There’s no easier way to earn cash for our school.
Thank you to all the families that have signed up for our PEP. We ask that if you have not paid your $5 donation, please do so by May 15, 2018. We need your donations in order to provide safe and family friendly events at the school, such as Movie Night.

This week, I was inspired by the activities I saw in our new Primary/Discovery building.
The two-day college fair that was conducted by our 5/6 grade students was outstanding. I was so impressed with the quality of their display boards, their knowledge and their presentation skills. They talked well about their selected college, the career they wanted, and the necessary qualifications to be accepted. It was wonderful to see all of the parents who came to see their work. The only drawback was the hallway was very crowded. Someday, we should have a gym to spread this wonderful event out so it can really be appreciated.
On the playground, I got to see the 3rd/4th graders in P 8 trying out their solar ovens. They were using the sun and their imagined method of creating a solar oven to melt a Hersey Kiss. It was STEM in action. They were so proud and they liked me observing as long as I wasn’t blocking the sun!
Our Discovery students are headed out to the county Pentathlon after an entire year of studying Africa. It was a great deal of study of literature, music, art, social studies, and science. This may be the most challenging year we have ever had. In the process, however, of reading and studying for this event, the students learned about the importance of clean drinking water and in an effort to help South Sudan, they raised over $5,000 to donate for a well for one of the villages. A well means the children will no longer have to spend their day walking to the pond or lake for water and in return can have time to go to school. The money came from recycled water bottles that came from home and school. Even if we do not win all the medals at the event tomorrow, we have won in our hearts by helping others.
And finally, I attended the Parent meeting (PEP) on Monday. I appreciate the effort of the parents who are working to find ways to unite our parents around our school community. The attendance was small, but we got to meet one another and talked about ways to build community among us. As the result of the meeting, I met several parents I did not know. I look forward to the next meeting.

THe Jog-a-thon is coming!!
The PCS Jog-A-Thon is Friday, April 27th and pledge envelopes need to be turned in to teachers on Tuesday, April 24th. We are looking forward to another fun fund raiser!
This week initial phase focused on Earth Day (reduce, reuse, recycle) and long and short vowels! We watched (and followed along with) this really fun exercise video about short and long vowels. Here is the link to check it out at home!

It looks like spring is finally here. There are a lot of activities going on as we race towards the end of the school year.
Saturday, April 21, 2018-DCS and DHSP are participating in Academic Pentathlon. Our students have worked very hard this year learning about the history and culture of West Africa in preparation for this. The competition will be taking place at Lathrop High School. We want to thank our parents for the support they have shown our pentathletes all year and for coming out tomorrow.

Welcome back from Spring Break. One student told me it felt he was gone as long as if it had been summer. Well, I can understand our summers are shorter than other schools, but not quite that short. What I did realize from the break is that time away is helpful. It does refresh us and it does give us a chance to appreciate what we have. That is the case with us right now, we are excited to see the high school remodeling get underway and for their return to this campus next spring. We miss them on this campus.
We are also so grateful for the new buildings that we have and the great response we have gotten from students and staff about the new feel of being a school. While I always believed that the facilities did not make a school, I do believe the facilities are now reflecting what a great school we are.
The end of the year comes quickly. We will have state testing, and events that make the end go even faster. High school has less than 35 days before FAST TRACK and graduation, and the rest of us have about 55 days to go until it is summer. Oh my! But again, I know that one of the things that makes us as successful as we are, is the extra school days we give our students. There is never a rush to get to the end of the expected curriculum, our students have less loss of learning time with a shorter summer and our curriculum really fits the amount of time we need to teach it. The extra time and the extra hours make for better learning.

This week on TK island. We learned how to be healthy islanders by following the food groups. They learned how to keep their bodies healthy, build strong muscles, and have lots of energy by eating protein, grains, diary, fruits, and vegetables. It was nice hearing all the the wonderful stories about their Spring break. They were just as excited to be back in class as their teachers were too!

Phase One spent the week learning about butterflies and even got some caterpillars as class pets. We will watch the caterpillars grow and eventually become butterflies that we will release. P4 even learned about pollination. Some math groups are learning about measuring capacity.
This week phase 2 students learned all about the scientific method! We’ve got some very curious scientists in 3rd and 4th grade! We discussed what a hypothesis is and how to collect data. We look forward to more science experiments this trimester. We also enjoyed a science presentation from the DCS students this week.

Welcome back! We hope everyone enjoyed their time off for Spring Break. We are back in full swing and heading towards the end of the school year. It will be here before you know it!
Teachers here at Discovery are at a loss for words….in an EXTREMELY good way!!
In just 13 school weeks (not counting Thanksgiving and Christmas break), which comes out to almost 4 months, our students at DCS raised $3,272.86 with their donated bags alone. The students brought in over 600 bags from home! Altogether, the whole school has raised $5019.20. Combined with the amount raised by the rest of the school and the money donated on our online Water for South Sudan Fundraiser page, we have raised a total of $5,745!!!!! Our plan was to raise $5000 by the last day of school, but our kiddos went above and beyond to hit our goal 4 months early and went over the amount we had set!! I am in awe of how our students went above and beyond our goal of $5000 by raising an extra $700.
In even better news, our school was recently contacted by the organization to congratulate the students for raising the $5000, and to also let them know that their money will go towards the co-sponsorship of a new Well. Our Well for the South Sudan community will be drilled by the end of May. If for any reason it does not, our Well will be the first to get drilled at the beginning of the next drilling season, which begins in December. Our school name will be placed on the Well as well and our students will be updated every step of the way. Our students are beyond excited to have their school name placed on the well and their fingers are tightly crossed that the drilling begins by May!
The DCS/DHSP teachers want to give a huge shout out to all our students for their donations and to all the parents who helped give support! We are speechless at how quickly we achieved our goal and cannot be any prouder of our students. They really are the best and some of the most dedicated students in our community.

Welcome back! Third trimester is underway and students are refreshed and ready to work after their two week Spring Break!
General Updates:
- Academic Pentathlon is 4/21 — if your student is participating as a team member or an alternate you will be receiving a letter home this week letting you know all relevant information.
- The deadline to sign up for the Washington D.C. trip (Spring Break 2019) at a discounted rate has been extended to April 30. Contact Ms. Sabedra (asabedra@tracylc.net) with any questions about the trip or for details on how to sign up.
- 8th grade activities are coming up! Be on the lookout for information coming soon
- Trimester 3 Leadership is meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays in preparation for the rest of the school year. We have a lot of ideas and plans we are hoping to make happen to end this year. Starting with a Jog a Thon rally, if weather permits it.
- 8th Grade Parent Meeting is coming in early May. Date is to be announced.

CJSF:

Language Arts:
Students are continuing their work learning about various African art! We are also reading Things Fall Apart and working hard to understand this very complex and rich culture.
Math:
Algebra is coming around the corner and beginning to wrap up the last few units in preparation for Algebra 2 or Geometry. Mrs. Dominguez is getting excited to see how this group of students does their Davis Test in May.
Geometry is exceeding all expectations this year in their knowledge of Algebra. This group is strong and as we wrap up this unit and finish the AP curriculum, we are hopeful to do well at our competition coming up.
Math 78 has completed this years curriculum map and has started working on Algebra readiness concepts.

UC Berkeley Summer Experience
UC Berkeley’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions is pleased to announce our annual Berkeley Summer Experience and invites you to nominate your student! Berkeley Summer Experience is an intensive application workshop and information session that is intended to introduce prospective students to the UC application, the admissions process, as well as the UC Berkeley undergraduate experience.
Berkeley Summer Experience will host a residential program for both prospective Freshmen and Transfers on UC Berkeley’s campus on June 15th-17th.
Note: The Berkeley campus program is a residential program and is open to any rising high school junior or senior and California Community College student meeting the eligibility requirements. While the program is free of charge, transportation to the program is not covered and participants will have to provide their own transportation.
To be eligible for the program, each student must be a junior or senior in high school in Fall 2018 and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher; or a community-college transfer student with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and 30 or more transferable semester units by the end of Spring 2018.
Students who are nominated by a counselor or a Community-Based Organization will have priority consideration when we are making selections. All nominated students must also fill out an application.
