Happy Monday – Mark your calendars for September:

Parents-4-TLC:

Thank you to all the parents that came out to our first meeting of the 2018/19 school year.

Next Parents 4 TLC 2018/19 School Year Meeting:

Wednesday September 19th, 2018

What is Parents-4-TLC you ask?  Great question! We are a group of parents interested and committed to giving back to the school, and fortifying the foundation of community the school instills in all of our kids.

First, we discussed how successful last year’s first movie night was!!  We raised over $500, and for that being our first official event, we were/still are thrilled!  We will be hosting our second Family Movie Night, Friday, October 12th under the tent at the current Millennium High School location (IGCG campus, 1904 Corral Hollow), and movie is to be determined, but we will keep you posted on that. Admission will be free, and we will have concessions for sale.

Next up, we talked about the upcoming fundraiser Wacky Wallet Wednesday, September 20th and it is an easy way to give back to the school.  That day, when you dine out a select business (or businesses) will donate a portion of sales back to the school as long as a flyer is presented at the time of purchase.  There will be a few options that day, and one of them will be COFFEE!!   We are looking to hopefully (everyone cross their fingers) have options throughout the day, as well as dessert.  We will be sending information home as soon as everything is finalized, but put that date in your calendars!!!  There will be a few more Wacky Wallet Wednesday’s throughout the year if you can’t make this one.

Lastly, we talked about Box Tops.  National Box Tops For Education week is coming up September 17 -23, and we will be holding a contest for the class that turns in the most Box Tops again.  Last time we got over 5,000 Box Tops, and starting August 31st participating products will have double Box Tops and bonus Box Tops.!!  We will be sending sheets home to make collection easier.  The winning class will receive a party of their choosing, hosted by Parents-4-TLC.  We will be holding another contest towards the end of the year, so don’t stop clipping after September.  Also, please make sure to check expiration dates!

Don’t forget about the passive ways you can fundraise for the school:

www.smile.amazon.com and select Tracy Learning Center (not available on mobile devices)

www.officedepot.com will donate 5% of purchases (must specify Primary, Discovery or Millennium after each purchase)

What are SWOs? SWO stands for School Wide Outcome. We have 4 SWOs: Polite Citizen, Proud Individual, Productive Worker, and Positive Cooperator. In P2 students can earn their way into our “excellence box” for demonstrating one of our SWOs. Each time a student is in the excellence box they earn a dot towards a SWO bracelet. Student’s must earn 5 dots by getting in the excellence box 5 times in order to get a SWO bracelet. At the end of the month Primary will have a special awards ceremony where three students from P2 will be presented with a SWO certificate for consistently demonstrating one of our SWOs for the entire month.

Phase One

This week was the first week that Phase One had homework and they did great! Students will continue to receive their Red folders on Mondays with a Parent-Student work page. These pages will consist of the following: sight words, spelling words and even the grammar concept your child is working on. Please review the work with your child to help them be better prepared for their quizzes on Friday.

P3 and P4 learned about The Three Branches of Government while P5 learned about voting. We will continue this unit next week. In Writers Workshop all three classes learned about what a sentence needs to be complete and made a fun Sentence Buddy to help them remember.

Phase Two

This week phase 2 students learned all about maps.  We discussed the compass rose, explored different types of maps and why we use maps.  This is a great thing to do at home too!  Our students loved looking at the maps and finding familiar landmarks.

Phase 2 students will begin our monthly walking trips to the library in September.  Permission slips will come home soon.

Meet the TLC Staff

George Hepner

gh

Hello, my name is George Hepner. I am very happy to be starting my 18th year with the Tracy Learning Center as the Director of Facilities. I have seen many changes over the years, but I am truly excited about our new campus and buildings! Students, parents, and staff all deserve such a great site to call home.

I work closely with the TUSD, City of Tracy, contractors, and vendors that do business with the Tracy Learning Center. I deal with community members and work with our staff on the safety and welfare of our students. I also oversee the day to day maintenance crew who ensure our campus remains in great shape.

In addition, I work with our Executive Director Virginia Stewart on many matters here at the TLC.

You can contact me at ghepner@tracylc.net and I look very forward to an awesome school year!!

Hello everyone and welcome back to the start of another great school year! Week two is already behind us and everyone seems to have taken off running!

For those of you who may not know who I am, I’m Mrs. Prescott, the school counselor for Discovery Charter School, 5th-8th grade. This is my third year at Discovery and I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of this AMAZING Tracy Learning Center team! I offer many services and opportunities to the students of DCS. Some think of me as the person they can go to work out their problems or check on their grades, but I do so much more!

Every year I take on take on new roles and add to the ways I can help students, teachers, and parents. Mrs. Stewart and I spend our Monday mornings seeing students in our ROAR (now SOAR) meetings to Strengthen Restorative Justice at our campus. I also meet with class representatives regularly to get student feedback on how their homerooms are doing on a group level and find ways to make every class run smoothly. I do individual and small group counseling, peer conflict mediation, grade checks and mentoring, the list goes on. For 7th and 8th grade, I’m the primary advisor to our California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) chapter, with my co-advisor, Mrs. Cerezo. If you have questions about the community service requirements in 7th/8th, I’m your contact person. Please feel free to contact me for things big and small.

I tell the kids, in a nutshell, I’m a professional listener and problem solver. They have to do the work, but I’m here to help them along the way!

Some helpful information about RED folders…
Students will come home with their RED folder every Monday. RED folders are to be returned to school every Friday. On Monday there will be a homework letter with concepts that your student is working on for the week. A big part of homework is daily reading. Please read with your child every day for 20 minutes and then fill out their reading log. Parent/student work is a good way for parents to work with their student on important concepts that they are working on at school. Additionally, there will be a homework tic tac toe sheet that has ideas of ways to help your child practice their sight words/ spelling words. If you have any further questions or need additional ideas on how to help your child at home email the teachers at: p2@tracylc.net.

Phase 1

Phase One is hard at work! We started doing centers this week and practiced transitions. The classes have started reading their AR books and are already taking quizzes! Keep up the hard work Phase One!

Phase 2

This week phase 2 students learned how to be a Bucket Filler! We discussed how complimenting others, offering help and being kind can fill someone’s bucket. We all love to have a full bucket! We also were inspired by Kid President and shared how we are all AWESOME!
All phase 2 students have both spelling and math homework. In addition, we ask that they please read for at least 20 minutes every night.

Primary Dismissal-Reminder starting Monday, August 20, 2018 students that remain after 3:35 (or when carline is over) will wait in their assigned classroom. fgty

I am Virginia Stewart, the CEO (principal) of the Tracy Learning Center. There are leaders in each of the schools who I delegate responsibility to as leaders for the individual schools.  They meet with me often.    I also teach two classes in Discovery.  I opened this charter school 19 years ago and watched it grow from 125 students to our current enrollment of 1300 students.  We have an incredible group of teachers who are truly dedicated to our students.  I interact with Kay all the time.  She keeps track of me!  I am so busy with observing and supporting teachers, dealing with discipline especially our ROAR – Restorative Justice System, meeting with leaders, as well as monitoring our finances, and writing reports.  Kay keeps me focused.    I ask all parents, teachers, and students and even my hairdresser to go through Kay to set a time to see me.  I always answer e-mails (vstewart@tracylc.net) the same day and that is a good way to ask me questions or to send comments.  I always have time in my calendar to see those who want to see me…Kay makes the time!

Thank you for selecting us for the school for your child.  We are very fortunate to have them.  All the new teachers have been so impressed with our students.  They are wonderful!

Kay Fagundes

Welcome to a new school year!

fghWe are very excited! My name is Kay Fagundes and I have the pleasure of taking car

e of all of your child’s “office” needs. The children see me when they are ill, injured or simply just need someone to talk to. Yes, it’s true, I also pull a lot of teeth each year.

In addition, I assist Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Prescott with our “ROAR” Discipline system. My phone number is (209) 290-0511 and my email address is kfagundes@tracylc.net. Please contact me with any questions, concerns or absences for your students. This year started out great and I expect it to be a wonderful and exciting year!

Air Quality Concerns

We know it has been very concerning for our students and parents to deal with the poor air quality this week. We receive regular updates from RAAN – Real Time Air Quality Update Network and when concentration levels reach higher than a “3” our teachers and coaches are instructed to have students indoors for lunch, recess and PE. Students who suffer with associated respiratory illnesses and or asthma have been advised to stay indoors as needed. We have also spoken to the TUSD Health Department and the Administration at Jefferson and confirmed  we are all following the same guidelines.

Please feel free to contact the office or email a teacher if you believe your child needs to be indoors during poor quality air days. Also, make sure your student’s inhalers/medical authorization forms have been given to the office. We will continue to send prayers and best wishes for those that have lost their lives, homes and livelihoods from these horrific fires and send our gratitude to all of those fighting these fires.
