Kids’ Brainpower Tied to Exercise, Sleep and Limited Screen Time

At least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, nine to 11 hours of sleep a night, and no more than two hours a day of recreational screen time were tied to higher test scores and achievement in schools.

Meet our Staff

Tawn Schaffran Pic (2)

Hello! My name is Tawn Schaffran and I am the Lead Guidance Counselor at Millennium High School. I just completed my 10th school year with the Tracy Learning Center family. In 2008, I began as a full-time Counseling Assistant. After two months, I was inspired by my colleagues and saw the value of a higher education and began attending graduate school to earn a Master’s in Educational Counseling and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential. I always knew I wanted a career where I could motivate youth and encourage them to find their full potential. My passion for working with young adults have led to various roles both on the school campus and in the community of Tracy. In addition to helping students manuever their way through the windy roads of academic, career, and personal/social needs, I coordinate our Internship Program for all seniors and teach four classes one day a week focusing on the 21st Century workplace skills. I love how each school day is unpredictable and I often wish it wouldn’t go by so quickly.

My husband John and I have been married for 24 years and we have a 13 year old daughter who is just beginning her high school years. When I’m not spending time with my family and friends, you can find me happily pursuing my hobbies which include reading, running, traveling, and cooking.

Greetings! My name is Lauren Moore and I am a High School Counselor at Millennium. This is my 5th year as a member of the TLC family, and I truly enjoy working with our students and families, and assisting them through academic and personal challenges and triumphs alongside my amazing colleagues. I wear many hats in my job as a Counselor, including Scholarship Coordinator, 504 Coordinator, CSF Adviser, and College Bound Club Adviser. I also serve students through coordinating school-wide events with my department, classroom guidance, and one-on-one advising. I have a B.A. in Psychology, an M.A. in Counseling with an emphasis in School Counseling, and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential. Before becoming a counselor, I was a peer adviser, group tutor, and teacher – education is a passion of mine and I strive to help my students be the best they can be as they navigate high school, and work toward their goals for what comes after. I have been married for just over a year to Scott, who is a science teacher and beekeeper, and believe it or not, we have thousands of pets…bees! In my free time, I enjoy hiking and being outdoors, yoga, dance and crafts of all kinds. Please feel free to reach out through email at Lmoore@tracylc.net if I can be of assistance to you and your student. Thank you!

My name is Warren Snell and I am the Director of Technology at TLC. I have had the pleasure of working at TLC school for 13 years. During that time I have worn many hats. Along with my Masters in Education Technology, I am credentialed to teach in Primary and Discovery as well as Math at the high school. While I have taught elsewhere, it is the unique opportunities that have made TLC my home for so long. Over the years we had visitors from around the world visit as we led the way in the use of Project based learning, Chromebooks in the classroom and small group instruction. It is that type of freedom and innovation that have led to such success within our school. I relish to be a part of what the next 13 years hold for our students.

Parents 4 TLC

Thank you to all the parents that came out to our September Parents 4 TLC meeting. It was great to see some new faces and meet some new incoming parents. We are excited to see our group growing, so thank you!

We had a very productive meeting! We discussed Wacky Wallet Wednesday, Box Tops and our upcoming Movie Night!!
Wacky Wallet was very successful and a great time! It was nice to get out the locations and meet new parents for coffee and lunch, and after school picked up the kids for pizza and gelato while running into old friends and making new ones!! Can’t wait for the next one in February. We will keep you posted of the date and locations as the time gets closer. If there is a restaurant that you think we HAVE to go to, let us know!!
Now for the fun stuff, the TOTALS!!! Barista’s had $500 in sales that our flyers accompanied, 20% of that is $100 earned for the school! Mountain Mike’s had $784.10 that our flyers accompanied, earning the school $156.82!! The Upper Room had approximately $500 in sales accompanied by our flyers, earning the school $100. Aldo’s Gelato had an amazing $691.07 that our flyers accompanied, earning $138.21, BUT Mike, owner of Aldo’s has sweetened the donation and added $25 earning the school a total of $163.21. Total earned was $520.03!!! Not bad for our first one, thank you everyone who supported!
Box Tops Contest ends today!! We will be collecting and counting all the Box Tops next week (only valid Box Tops will count) and the winner will be announced shortly after that!! If you still have Box Tops that you haven’t submitted, don’t worry! We will be holding one more contest before the end of the year. Last contest we earned $369.50 for the school. It is our goal to hit $1,000 this year, and with all of your help we know we can do it! Those who volunteered to help clip and count, we will be in touch soon!!
Friday, October 12th is our next Outdoor Family Movie Night and we will be showing Coco! Doors will open at 6 pm, movie will start at 6:30. Current high school address 1904 Corrall Hollow Road. Concessions will be available for purchase, hot dogs, nachos with chili this time by request, soda, water and, of course, HOT popcorn. We will be raffling off some great baskets provided by all the Primary classrooms, as well as a 50/50 raffle! So make sure to bring your small bills!! There will be a limited section for people needing/wanting to bring chairs to sit in, otherwise please make sure to bring a blanket to sit on. They might have the windmills turned on 😉 so be sure to bring a jacket or blanket to keep warm.
Just a reminder, Parents 4 TLC collects and donates ALL items left in Lost & Found monthly. Please make sure you are labeling your child’s jacket!!

Don’t forget about the passive ways you can fundraise for the school:

www.smile.amazon.com and select Tracy Learning Center (not available on mobile devices)

www.officedepot.com will donate 5% of purchases (must specify Primary, Discovery or Millennium after each purchase)

Our next meeting is Monday, October 15th at 6:30 in P2.

CARLINE

Dear Parents,
“Car Line” is still causing everyone an inconvenience this year, as this week was worst than most for 2018! It is the 8th week of school and it has already been parents need to go get in “Car Line and go “South on Mae” to drop off their students!!! This being a TWO WAY Stop, instead of a Four way Stop makes it extremely difficult, as your fellow teachers…Staff & Our Beloved Crossing Guards can only do so much to prevent a tragic event from happening!!!
Please take this as a friendly reminder and a HUGE “Thank You” to all parents that are still following ALL traffic laws to keep everyone safe. Concerns will once again be addressed with the Tracy Police Department as well!
Also, “Thank You” to the parents that reached out to The Tracy Learning Center. We here are hoping to solve this problem with “Car Line” soon with everyone’s help and cooperation!
Also, as a friendly reminder, please remind students that they should be applying
“Deodorants/Antiperspirants/Baby Powder or Sanitary Wipes” in the morning before they are coming to school and
showering daily; as their bodies have already begun puberty even though there may be no signs of it showing physically…Especially with this hot weather this week!

We continue to have some very unsafe drop offs of students with parents stopping illegally, holding up traffic and letting children run across the street with the risk of oncoming traffic. Please, we beg you – Slow down and protect your child from injury or worse by safely pulling over and encouraging your child to only cross in the cross walks when safe to cross.

We are all getting very excited for homecoming week.
Inital Phase
The theme this year is the 1960’s and Primary is doing “The Man on the Moon” — more specifically Kindergarten will be doing “stars.” Parade day is Wednesday, October 3rd and will take place in downtown Tracy at 3:00.
Additionally, we will have a 1:00 dismissal this day.
All students are welcome to walk in the parade AS LONG AS the have returned the permission slip ahead of time.
As part of our homecoming celebration we will have a spirit week next week where students have a different dress up theme each day.
Monday: Camo Day, Tuesday: Blue & Gold Day, Wednesday: Space Day, Thursday: Tie-Dye Day, Friday: Black & Gold Day

Phase One

Our first AR goal period has come to an end! Congratulations to all the students that met their goal and get to go to their classroom’s AR party next week. All students in AR will retake the Star Reading Test next week and receive a new reading level. Our next AR goal is due November 9th.

We will be wrapping up our Native American unit next week. So far they have learned about 3 different regions of Native Americans. They have discussed the types of homes they live in, the food they eat and made several crafts.

October is a busy month! One thing that is happening is the TLC Family Movie night. Each class is creating a gift basket and they will be raffled off at the movie night. P3’s theme is Family Game Night, P4’s theme is BBQ Picnic and P5’s theme is Coffee Time. If you have any item to donate that would be great!

This week Phase 2 students continued their study of the 50 states. We also learned about the 4 regions of California. Did you know our own Centra Valley produces 99% of the country’s almonds?! We are also always hard at work on projects…here are pictures of some of the work from Phase 2 students.

Don’t forget that Wednesday is an early release day and our Homecoming parade! There will be NO after school homework support that day.

DCS

Important Dates:

Monday, October 1st: Science Camp Forms Due

Wednesday, October 3rd: Early Release Day at 1:30 for Homecoming Parade
Tuesday, October 9th: Picture Re-Takes

Friday, October 12th: $350 Payment for Science Camp due to Ms. Connie or Ms. Ramirez in the front office (checks made payable to Tracy Learning Center- we also accept cash and credit card payments)
DCS Survival Tip:

We understand that no one is born with great organizational skills — these skills have to be learned and repeatedly practiced over time. Being organized is key to being successful in Discovery! We want to thank parents who have put in place systems to help their children stay organized. We have noticed that having a folder system for each class is a popular one that is working for a majority of the kids. Binders are nice, but can become bulky and heavy over time, especially if not cleaned out on a regular basis.

Once home, it is important that kids know how to create a daily after school to-do list to help them prioritize tasks/assignments and manage their time effectively.

“Being organized helps me to find homework faster so I don’t waste time. Last year, I only had two folders and it got very cluttered, so this year I have a folder for each subject. I put my folders in order of my classes so I only have to pull out what I need” – Jayme A. (6th Grade)

“My filing system works for me because I don’t lose important papers. I keep all of the stuff that is not due in the back and anything I need to do that day or for homework that night, I keep in front. My tip is to clean out your backpack every week to keep it as light as possible” – Malakai (5th Grade)

Science Camp Update:

We just wanted to clear the air because some parts have heard a rumor that we were canceling Science Camp due to low numbers to attend- we are NOT canceling Science Camp. Staff were making phone calls to parents of students who have not submitted a packet because we needed to submit out final head count. We also needed to show the County we had numbers to fill a majority of the spots in our reservation so we didn’t have to share the site with another school.

-Mrs. Theall, Ms. Sabedra, Ms. T and Coach Balsamo (from MHS) will be the staff attending Science Camp -with the kids. We will also be bringing with us 20 MHS students to act as camp cabin counselors.

-Remaining teachers will stay at school to host a week of Stay Camp here at our TLC school site for students not attending away camp at Joan’s Gulch.

A Glance into Classrooms:

Social Studies: Ms. Sabedra
5/6 students turned in their notebook covers and they look amazing! Most students chose to create a ‘Space Race’ themed cover, but there were many other great topics, like Women’s Rights, Integration/Segregation, Communism, & Presidents of the 60’s, chosen as well.

Math: Mrs. Zuniga

Varsity: Our class has begun talking about time and elapsed time. The students have learned 3 types of elapsed time problems. They are learning how to tell how long an event lasted, when an event started, and lastly when an event ended. The students have been doing well with all our concepts so far, but are ready and excited to begin learning about fractions next week.

Scholastic: Our class is finishing off multiplying fractions this week and will be taking another quiz on Friday to show their mastery of the concept. Students have learned different strategies to solve fraction operations and are loving that they are learning new ways to solve these problems. Our class is very excited to begin dividing fractions starting Monday and can’t wait to finish off the fraction portion of Unit One.

Honors: Honors class has finished all operations of decimals as well as converting decimals to fractions. We began discussing percents and their relationships to decimals and fractions. Our class began discussing how percents relate to the real-world. Students will begin learning about interest on Monday. We cannot wait to discuss interest and real-world application of percents.

Music: Mr. Dougherty
Fifth and six grade discovery students are outside composing their street busking routines for Mr. Dougherty’s music class. The ensembles are made up of groups using found objects, such as buckets and cardboard boxes, body percussion, boom whackers, and voice.

Math: Ms. T

Varsity: A fun way to learn speed and fluency of math facts is to play games. Our class really enjoys playing Math War. We are working very hard to gain speed and accuracy of our Math Facts to make Math feel more enjoyable and successful.

Scholastic: We are wrapping up Unit One on Fractions and we will be taking our first Unit test on Tuesday, October 2nd. This test will consist of Finding LCM and GCF with Factor Trees, Add/Subtract Fractions with common and unlike denominators and operations of multiplying and dividing with fraction.

Honors: We wrapped up Units 1 and 2 with back to back Unit Tests. Our class averages were strong with 86% for Unit 1 and 80.7% for Unit 2. Our class is on their way to Unit 3 and were introduced to Integers on Tuesday.

-Homecoming is NEXT WEEK! 10/1-10/5

-The parade will take place on Wednesday 10/3 at 3pm

– Students are bringing home flyers with detailed information about the parade! Please look out for this information!

CJSF:

-Shout out to Ms. Dominguez’s homeroom for winning the CSJF Animal Shelter donation! This week those students were rewarded with an ice cream party!

Language Arts:

Mrs. Cerezo’s Language Arts classes are focusing on figurative language this week. Students are learning various types such as, simile, metaphor, personification, and hyperbole. They are then connecting these ideas to the novel we are reading, The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano.

Please remember to check your student’s agenda for their Language Arts grade. Students write in their updated grade each week.

In Mrs. Ernst’s Language Arts class we are continuing with our novel The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano, as well as working on writing, grammar and the concept of Art from the 1960’s in Humanities.
Just a reminder- all of the students in this class have homework every week. They receive new vocabulary words every Monday, as well as receiving an essay prompt weekly. If you student says they do not have any homework, please ask them if they have completed these tasks and know what their vocabulary words mean.

Math:

Mrs. King’s classes:

Varsity has completed their first unit. Their unit final was Thursday, September 27th. For the past two weeks they have been participating in Math Olympiad problem solving as a group. I am impressed with how well they have been working together to solve these problems.

Honors has completed their first unit and is now involved in “real geometry”, a chapter called Reasoning and Proof. We have dabbled in constructions, using protractors and compasses to create geometrical figures.

Scholastic is plugging away mastering the intro skills needed for Algebra success. We are progressing into some difficult, but necessary concepts for Algebra success. Scholastic has also been involved in Math Olympiad problem solving. I was impressed with some of their dogged determination to find the solutions.

Science:

In ⅞ Science, we are wrapping up the first academic pentathlon unit on light with a discussion of “Color” as a part of the visible light spectrum. Next up is the second unit of Optics!

Social Studies:

Students worked extra hard this week in Social Studies getting ready for their Unit 1 Test. They continued their game of Heads Up: Falcon Edition with the 8th Grade Nests taking the lead in their classrooms. Mr. Liew’s Homeroom participated in a Buzzer Game to showcase all that they have learned this unit. Congratulations to the Amur students in that class that smoked all the other Nests!

ssLisa Van Scoy

Hello, I am Lisa Van Scoy I am the Preschool Program Director, I started here three years ago as the Toddler Teacher and was asked to lead the program a short time later. Leading our amazing preschool teaching team has been a huge privilege and we have accomplished a lot! In our time together, we’ve expanded the program to provide for even more students, received our first ever quality rating, and secured a spot as a Best of Tracy, preschool.

If you ever visit our Grant Line campus you will most likely see me bouncing between our two preschool classrooms or singing and dancing with a group of our youngest learners!

sdsdHi! My name is Sheree Parker and I am one of the TK teachers. The TK team has made the transition to lead teacher an easy one as they are a great, supportive team. I have been working at TLC for 5 years, mostly in kindergarten. I have learned so much since I have been working here and I know I have gained so much knowledge and tools to help me be successful. There are so many opportunities at TLC to help like I am the Cross Country Coach at Millennium for the past 3 years. I am able to use my knowledge and love for track and field to help the student-athletes to reach their full potential. Outside of TLC, I am the director of a youth track club called God Speed.  I am a mother of 3 sons, of which 2 are in high school and one is grown with 2 kids of his own.  It has been a long journey, but finally, I have completed all my requirements to obtain my teaching credential and Masters Degree in Education.

P2 is going to have many fun and exciting events with the change of the season. Homecoming is an event that the whole school looks forward to each year. The movie, Coco, will begin at 7:00 AND there will be a 50/50 raffle, raffle baskets, and concessions for purchase. Our classroom is putting together a raffle basket and are asking for donations. The theme of our P2 basket is READING CORNER. See fliers for more information.

Phase One

This week Phase One continued writing paragraphs in Writer’s Workshop and learning about Native Americans in Social Studies.

AR GOALS: By now you might have heard your student mention something about an AR goal. Students that are in AR were given a goal several weeks ago based on their reading level. They then have to read books in their reading level and take quizzes on them to receive points towards their goal. Quizzes can only be taken at school and after a student has read their book 3 times (once for a chapter book).  We are now approaching the end of our first AR goal period, in fact there is ONE week left to meet AR goals. Each class will have their own AR party for those students that reach their AR goal the following week.

Phase 2 students are hard at work on their geography unit in Social Studies.  P8 competed their state reports, P7 and P6 finished their “Me on the Map” projects.  While all three classes follow the same curriculum, the pace of our lesson and projects varies from class to class.  P7 is currently working on state reports and P6 is creating a US map puzzle.  Next week we will all focus on our great state of California!  This is a great time to discuss the different places you have been in our state.  We will learn about the symbols, regions, landmarks and different landforms of our great Golden State!

A Sneak Peek into Classrooms

Technology- Ms. Ferguson: In Honors the students are being introduced to Google Docs and creating a to go menu for a restaurant that they created!

In Varsity the students are applying their Google Slides skills to create a presentation about their favorite activity!

Language Arts- Ms. Christensen: This week in Language Arts Honors continued work on diagramming a sentence for subject and predicate and Scholastic began learning to diagram a sentence for subject and predicate.  Varsity is working on different types of verbs (auxiliary, linking, and helping).  All groups worked on creating a plot map for a chapter we read this week in L.A.

In Humanities we reviewed all areas of our music unit and took the final.

Physical Education: With the new school year underway, students are having a blast in PE playing Rookie Rugby, Lacrosse and Soccer! Please be on the lookout in “Aeries” for “Grade Updates” each week as Coach Penirian, Coach Easterday and Coach Williams’ classes just took their first test this past Friday, September 14th.

Also, as a friendly reminder, please remind students that they should be applying

“Deodorants/Antiperspirants/Baby Powder or Sanitary Wipes” in the morning before they are coming to school and showering daily; as their bodies have already begun puberty even though there may be no signs of it showing physically!

Thank You!!!

Geography- Ms. T & Mrs. Zuniga: Students had many questions about the White House, so all classes decided to further our curiosity by watching a tour of the White House, led by First Lady, Mrs. Kennedy from the 1960’s.  We then explored what the White House looked like in modern times and compared the decades of transformation.  This led us into a discussion about the 50 states and where they are located. We both are so excited with where our classes have taken us and we decided that exploring all of the 50 states/capitals together will vastly expand our knowledge.

Social Studies- Ms. Sabedra: This week in 5/6 social studies students have been working on creating notebook covers about what we’ve learned so far this year. I’m seeing so many students show amazing creativity and impressive art skills. They’re looking great and I can’t wait to see the finished products!

CJSF:

WOW!!!! What a grand success DCS had with our Donation Drive for the Tracy Animal shelter! This was also CJSF’s biggest donation drive to date! We are so grateful and proud of the kids and their families who worked together to make this happen. The Tracy Animal Shelter is going to be blown away by our delivery. With my office now back to normal, but my van stuffed and ready to go, I can’t wait to see what we accomplish and give back to our community next!

~ Mrs. Prescott, DCS Counselor and CJSF Adviser

(Below are some pictures of our CJSF students, as well as all of the donated items!)

Social Studies:

This week, students took a trip back to the 1700’s and learned all about our early American history! We started off the week by discussing how the Great Awakening gave the colonists the desire to question the King’s authority and the courage needed to stand up to the Monarchy to fight for their rights. Students compared and contrasted the lifestyle of the colonists with those living in England and how those differences led to the colonists need for independence. Monday through Wednesday our Scholastic and Honors students reviewed their vocabulary for the 60’s the first ten minutes of class by playing “Heads Up: Falcon’s Edition” and the Kestrel Students in Ms. Dominguez homeroom are on a 3-day winning streak! Students did receive a study guide for the upcoming Unit 1 Test that will be on Friday, September 28th. Good luck to all the students and GO NINERS!

PE:

With the new school year underway, students are having a blast in PE playing Rookie Rugby, Lacrosse and Soccer!

Language Arts:

In Mrs. Cerezo’s Language Arts classes the students are testing their knowledge of the periods of art that we have begun to study. Each student has prepared a mini-presentation or a “broadcast” that demonstrates their understanding of their assigned period of art. Students have been very creative in their work!

Students are also preparing for their third debate of the year. This one poses the question, “Should football be played in high school?” We are eager to see where this debate takes us and how our debate skills have improved since the start of the year.

Also, parents please check your students agendas each week for their Language Arts grade. Students are given their updated grade weekly on their nest card and are asked to record it in their agenda as well.

Math:

Pictured Below: Mrs. King’s Scholastic class demonstrates their understanding of expressions by creating expressions that are equal to the numbers on a clock.

hh

Science:

Seventh and eighth grade science have started working on the first Academic Pentathlon unit. Students are wrapping up Part 1 of our unit on Light, and very excited to make their way through the following unit on Optics to get to the very popular subject of lasers. Parents, please note that the three Academic Pentathlon units are very notes-intensive. Students will have little to no homework during this time, and mostly be working on maintaining their science notebook.

More introductions from some of our awesome leaders….

IMG_2646 (1)My name is Ms. Takeuchi (Ms. T) and during my time here at TLC I have had the privilege of teaching in K/1 and 4th Grade at PCS and for the last 8 years, I have made a home in Discovery. I am a full time teacher and I also am the Learning Director for 5/6, Department Math Chair for 5th-8th and am the DCS 5/6 Leadership teacher. I hold a CA teaching credential, have my Masters Degree in Educational Leadership & Administration and will be finishing up my CA Administrative Credential in April.

One of my favorite things about my job is that I get to watch our kids transition, progress and gain confidence throughout their time in DCS. Entering 5th grade is always a new challenge for kids but we teach grit and push them to expand and stretch their learning capabilities. We take our students to new heights and we teach them to soar on their own by the time they leave us.

I look forward to working closely with you to build a strong home/school connection in order to ensure your child’s year in Discovery is successful!
Please feel free to contact me at any time

This week, we studied the four seasons. We created a Seasons Book, which highlighted each of the seasons: for Winter, we pasted snowball cotton balls to icy, dormant trees; for Spring, we finger-painted bright, beautiful blossoms to the trees; for Summer, we used scraps of green paper to awaken the branches, and for Autumn, yellow, red and brown sticker leaves went aflutter! We also sorted photos of clothing items, food and weather to match their proper season. Plus, we watched some season-themed videos!

Initial Phase

What is a marble party? A marble party is a reward that the class earns by working together as a team. The teachers set a goal for the amount of marbles the class needs to earn in order to have a marble party. So far we have increased our goal 3 times this year—we have a really awesome class! Our latest goal to earn a party is 40 marbles. The class earns marbles by EVERYONE following classroom rules and procedures. Having a straight & quiet line, working quietly, following directions, and having good transitions are a few examples of how the class can earn marbles.

Phase One

Phase One is enjoying learning about Native Americans! This week they focused on Native Americans from the Northwest Coast. They learned about where they lived, food they ate, and what their homes were like. The students also made a fun totem pole craft. We will learn about a new group next week.

Phase One Snack:

We believe that a healthy snack helps students stay alert and energetic for learning. It also helps us focus on the benefits of healthy choices and healthy eating. We ask each student to take a turn providing a healthy snack for our classroom. Students will be assigned a day to bring snack. This schedule will go home in the green folder as well as in the weekly newsletter. Please bring in 44 pre-packaged snacks, NO DRINKS. We are asking that students bring in a labeled water bottle daily.

  • Examples of healthy snacks: pretzels, fruit cups, applesauce, fresh fruit, granola bars, breakfast bars, trail mix, popcorn, goldfish crackers, etc.
  • Snack should be individually wrapped. You may decide to buy bulk and bag up 44 individual snacks if you would like.
  • Please DO NOT send: cookies, chips, donuts, cupcakes, chocolate, Rice Krispy treats, fruit snacks or other high sugar treats. We will not be able to hand out these items as a snack.

Phase 2

Does your phase 2 student know how to tell time to the minute and count money?  These are ongoing concepts that can easily be practiced at home.  We would also like them to be able to figure elapsed time, meaning how much time has passed.  Randomly quiz your child on the time and see how they do!

Phase 2 AR goals are due on Friday the 21st.  Students who meet their goal will get a special treat the following Monday!  Please make sure you are checking on your child’s weekly AR progress by signing their chart that comes home on Friday.

Hello! My name is Alejandra Garcia and I am the Grant Line campus office receptionist and have been with the TK/Pre-k program since the start in 2015. Hello, my name is Angie and I am currently the secretary of Millennium High School.  I am currently enjoying my fifth year at Tracy Learning Center.  I am bilingual in Spanish and enjoy helping both parents and students.

kjkkkkMy name is Michele Beringer and I am the Director of Admissions and Records.  I am working on my 17th year at the Tracy Learning Center and I am proud to say I was a part of the amazing growth from 150 students to the current enrollment of almost 1,300 students.  I started as a learning guide in the workroom, then to office manager, and to my current role in admissions.  I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration which is helpful as I am responsible for the state and federal reports that need to be submitted each year.  I also manage the student information system, Aeries, which is how all parents can update information and grades 5-12 can monitor their student’s grades.  Our infamous waiting lists are also under my care, they grow on a daily basis.  Please feel free to contact me at mberinger@tracylc.net if you have any questions regarding Aeries or our waiting lists for admission.  At this time, I am located at Millennium High School on North Corral Hollow Road until the renovations at the East Beverly Site are complete.

This week, we studied the weather. We participated in a weather-themed relay and graphed weather-related images! We also drew pictures of the weather each day in our very own weather mini-book. We used our whole bodies in response to weather movement cards: we drifted slowly like snowflakes, whirled like tornadoes and made our bodies electric like lightening! We also participated in a game of Lightning Strike, and watched a video about lightning and thunder.

All about our homework tic-tac-toe….

What is the homework tic-tac-toe sheet that I see in my student’s folder? At the beginning of each month we will send home a homework tic-tac-toe sheet. The purpose of this is to provide parents with ideas of fun, hands on ways to help their student practice their weekly sight words and/or spelling words. Homework is completely optional; however, if your student does complete work send it to school in their red folder on Friday. Students earn classroom nickels for their bank for completed work. Save the monthly tic-tac-toe sheet for the entire month and try different activities each week.  Don’t forget to include twenty minutes of reading into your daily routine!

Phase 1

What is AR? You might hear your child talk about this and not know what it means. Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading program that they will use in Phase One and Phase Two. Each student is assessed and then assigned a reading level. Once they receive a reading level they are free to read books in that level. Not all books are AR so make sure they are! Download the app Book Scanner and it will let you know the book level and quiz number. After your child has read their book 3 times (1 time for chapter books) they will then come to school and take a quiz on one of their classroom iPads or Chrome Books. The students receive points based on how well they do on the quiz. Each student is given a goal and has six weeks to reach that goal in order to go to their classroom AR party. There are currently two weeks left in our first AR goal period. Keep on reading Phase One!

Phase One has started a new unit in Social Studies on Native Americans. For the next four weeks we will focus on a different region of Native Americans. Ask your child what they have already learned about Native Americans so far.

Phae 2

Phase 2 students are continuing our study of maps and geography.  We also had our first student store last week!  We have found that our students always need practice with counting money.  This is an easy skill to practice at home…give them some coins and let them count!  We also work on adding up the items we’d like to purchase and subtracting from our total amount.  These are very important skills that come in very handy, and not just at student store!  You can also discuss how you can make the same amount of money using different combinations of coins and how to make change.

P6 enjoyed their first trip to the library and P7 will go next week.  Please make sure your child has their library card!  P8 will go to the library on September 27th.

Discovery 5/6

Recently, I have had questions by 5th grade parents asking what our different class names mean and how we group students.  We believe it is important that all of Discovery students leave us not only having strong academic skills, but with grit and a personal sense of lifelong learning. Our curriculum and pacing in all courses is implemented so that every students will feel constantly challenged and pushed, however, they should not feel overly frustrated. Their successes are earned through hard work and will be praised and celebrated.

We do group our student by Math ability because we offer multiple levels of math to fit each child’s needs.  We understand not all kids in Math are of the same ability in Language Arts, however, our Language Arts teachers do an excellent job differentiating instruction within their groups to reach students. Incoming students already seem overwhelmed by the changes in middle school, so moving as one cohort from class to class offers a needed sense of comfort and routine to our kids. Keep in mind that our students see 7 teachers a day and transition to 9 different courses.  We also have reduced our class sizes this year in each level so each teacher can help students on a more personal level.

Discovery Class Names:

Varsity: We focus on filling in any and all student knowledge gaps so that our students in this level can build a strong foundational skill set.

Scholastic: This is our grade level group, which is more advanced than what other middle schools are offering students of the same age. Students in this course will be guided through a steady paced course in Introduction to Algebra.

Honors: This is our advanced level group that takes a full course of Algebra 1. This is a mandatory two year course because of the complexity and fast pace.

7th/8th

General:

-Please make sure you have completed the Emergency Form for your students, if you have not turn them in as soon as possible

-Homecoming is just a few weeks away!

CJSF:

Next week, from September 10-17th, the students of the California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) will kick off their first community service donation drive for the Tracy Animal Shelter! Flyers with more information and donation ideas will go home Friday. The Tracy Animal Shelter has opened their doors for many of our students to be able to come and do community service with them. This is just one more way our students and school can show their support for one of our local organizations in need. The 7/8 and 5/6 homerooms with the most donations will be awarded a special treat, proved by CJSF!

Language Arts:

This week in Language Arts students have continued their study of Art Genres, as well as continued to read The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano. Students are enjoying how seamlessly Pentathlon is incorporated into our curriculum!

Social Studies:

This week the students are rating President Kennedy’s foreign policy issues during the 1960s. Students read about each major foreign policy event/action, then gave his role/decision a letter grade (A-F) and explained why.

My name is Connie Linarez.  I have been working at Tracy Learning Center for 11 years.  I started as a substitute then worked my way to a Human Resource Assistant, Office Managers Assistant and now I have the privileged of working next to Mrs. Stewart as the Director of Finance.  I have worn many hats during the last 11 years and so far my favorite experience was assisting in the development of our Pre-School which was voted Best of Tracy in 2017!

TK

This week, we practiced exploring our five senses! We explored our sense of taste as we sampled a variety of sweet, salty, bitter and sour foods. Plus, we kept our listening ears alert as we rattled sound cups with Mrs. Van Lehn! We used our sense of touch to investigate a variety of mystery items, and smelled sweet and citrus scents as we got our olfactory system engaged. We also trained our eyes to look at things in a whole new way; vibrant colors were admired and tiny details were noted with precision. It was a week of fun-filled exploration in TK!

All about crossing out smiley faces…

What does it mean when a student has to cross out a smiley face? Crossing out a smiley face means that a student needed a reminder of a rule that they already know. Crossing out a smiley face doesn’t mean that a student had a bad day. However, if a student crosses out three smiley faces in a day that will result in a yellow day. Crossing out smiley faces is a way for students to learn how to regulate and control their own behavior. While crossing out a smiley face here and there isn’t a big deal, crossing out one to two smiley faces each day in a week is not good. Look over your student’s behavior log and have a conversation with them about their behavior each week.

Phase One

Phase One has been hard at work! They continued learning about the government and elections. In Writer’s Workshop, they started writing super sentences by adding details. They are amazing writers!

Which folder is which? Red folders will be given to the students at the beginning of the week and contain Parent-Student Work. This work does not have to be turned in; it is just concepts to practice with your student. Red folders are due on Fridays. Green folders contain all the week’s work. It also has important notes, lunch and snack menus  and your student’s behavior chart. This folder is due on Mondays.

Phase 2

Some of our hard-working Phase 2 students were awarded with SWO certificates this morning.  At the end of every month we recognize Polite Citizens, Productive Workers, Proud Individuals, and Positive Cooperators.  We are proud of their hard work!

Please make sure you are reviewing and signing your child’s agenda every week.  This is a great way to have a conversation about what they learned that week.  Also, please ask your child about how they are making progress toward meeting their AR goal.  We are halfway done with our 6 week goal period!

P6 will be walking to the library on Thursday, September 6.  P7 will go the 13th, P8 will go on the 20th.  Make sure you return those library permission slips and get a library card!

Don’t forget, picture day is on Tuesday!

-All of 5/6 went out today to have their first nest challenge of the year. All 4 nests played a game of capture the flag, but the Kestrels managed to win by collecting all 4 footballs out of their opponent’s territory.

DCS Survival Tip #2:

Aeries is what 5th – 12th grade uses to input all course assignments and grades. Teachers update Aeries throughout the week and it is a great resource to keep track of how your child is doing in their classes and if they are turning in all of their assignments on time.

A red box in Aeries represents a missing assignment- This means your child was either absent the day it was due or they did not turn in an assignment on the date it was due.
