A weekly newsletter written to parents of the TLC

State testing for all students begins next week in the high school. All juniors will be tested during the days Monday and Tuesday.  The following week, students in all grades in Discovery will be tested.  Finally the last week in May the Primary students in grades 3 and 4 will be tested.  These tests are a measure of student growth and progress and are important indicators of school success.

Parents can help with testing results as well. Please look at the following suggested sites.

In a recent letter from the state, we were encouraged to have parents of English Language Learners as well as other students  to use this information to help prepare their students for testing.

Using these websites, families can become involved in their child’s progress and:

  • Learn more about the performance areas in each subject and grade.
  • See sample test questions.
  • Prepare for parent-teacher conferences with a useful downloadable guide.
  • Access high-quality resources to support learning at home.

Personal Days for Next School Year 2019/2020

VERY IMPORTANT CHANGE for our upcoming 2019/2020 school year Beginning August 5, 2019, we are reducing personal/family days for students from 10 days down to 7 days. Allowing 7 days is still much higher than what the district schools allow and we feel 7 days is more beneficial for the school and for each students’ education.

TK

It was a great week back in TK!

During Science, we learned about the life cycles of the butterfly and bumblebee. We completed art projects that demonstrated the process from egg to larva to pupa to adult. We read a silly story about an impatient caterpillar who couldn’t wait to become a butterfly. Plus, we participated in a cut-and-paste related to bumblebee facts!

We also reviewed all of our math and language concepts from earlier in the school year, and, we are happy to report, absolutely no regression since Spring Break! Our students have grown dramatically, and have made great strides in reading and mental math! We are SO proud of them!

Initial Phase

Don’t forget to collect pledges for the jog-a-thon! It will come up quick when we get back from spring break!

Parents will be charged a late fee as stated in our PCS Handbook of $10 for all late Primary students that are picked up after PCS carline is over (3:35pm).  Please pay Kay or Angie in the office and your child will be sent to the office. Cash or checks  only.

Phase One:

The Phase One teachers would like to thank all of the parents and families that donated eggs to our classroom egg hunts. This is a yearly tradition that the students absolutely LOVE and it would not be possible without your donation.

Jog-a-Thon envelopes were sent home on Monday. This is a really fun and easy fundraiser so remember to get those pledges!

Phase Two:

Welcome back!  We hope everyone had a relaxing spring break.  Our phase 2 students have state testing coming up soon…May 20th will begin our two weeks of standardized testing. Please note that we will test from 8:30-12:30 every day so please make sure your child is on time!

This week we started our Gold Rush unit…it was such an exciting time in our California history and our students are loving this subject! Some classes even did a “cookie mining” simulation where they purchased “land” (cookies!) and mining supplies (toothpicks). It was a great lesson in just how hard it was to strike it rich!

Millennium High School

TLC/ Millennium High School recently entered into an agreement with Interquest Detection Canines, Inc., to provide trained detection canines to conduct random, unannounced inspections of all campus locations in the district.

These canines are trained to detect the presence of illicit drugs, alcohol, and gunpowder-based items.  Campus buildings, parking lots, and grounds will be randomly inspected for prohibited items.  If detected and found, the administration will initiate the appropriate disciplinary action.

These canines are non-aggressive retrieving breeds such as golden and labrador retrievers.  They are trained to discriminate specific “scents” of contraband items and indicate the area where the scent is detected.  Interquest provides service to over 1,200 public school districts across the nation.

With the recent publicity concerning the dramatic increase in teenage drug use,  Tracy Learning Center / Millennium High School is taking every reasonable precaution to insure a safe and healthy learning environment for all concerned.

Respectfully,

Virginia Stewart

Executive Director

FAST TRACK is Coming Up!

Fast Track is our mandatory summer program for all high school students which gives them the opportunity to take ten credits of a course to remediate or accelerate, and/or to take a college course.  The classes for FAST TRACK were discussed with your student during his/her one-on-one counseling session, and schedules were mailed out today.  We are not accepting any FAST TRACK schedule change requests at this time.

Field Trip to Cal State East Bay and Las Positas

Thirty-seven of our 10th and 11th grade students joined us for a field trip on Friday to the WACAC College Fair hosted by Cal State East Bay, and to Las Positas College.  We had the opportunity to talk with representatives of CSU’s, UC’s, private colleges, and out-of-state colleges by visiting the various booths at the WACAC College Fair.  We then toured Cal State East Bay.  Next, we visited Las Positas Community College and learned a lot about college costs, transfer programs, and the many student support programs available to students.

College Admission Acceptance Day

We celebrated our College Admission Acceptance day this week and some of our college bound seniors gathered to take their picture wearing their future college campus gear.

This upcoming Monday, May 6th and Tuesday, May 7th is a big test day for all of our students in the high school! Our Juniors will be taking the CA Dept of Education Smarter Balance assessments – It is based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics. College readiness is also measured and we want to stress the importance of these assessments. Other grades will be taking Reading, Language Arts, and Social Studies school-based tests to measure their proficiency, and content knowledge. Please ensure that your child is in school on these days and prepared to test in the morning.

The City of Tracy is seeking our help! As part of an effort to reassess the City of Tracy’s Mayor’s Community Youth Support Network (MCYSN) Program, the City is launching an outreach campaign to evaluate the current program and service needs of Tracy’s local youth. The MCYSN Program was launched in 2008 to combat youth gang violence and to provide intervention, prevention, and crisis suppression programs for at-risk youth through a network of local service providers. The City has issued a community survey to gather feedback on the types of programs and services needed to help Tracy youth prosper. The public is encouraged to complete the survey, which can be accessed via the City of Tracy website at www.cityoftracy.org. The survey will close on May 6, 2019 at 5:00 p.m.
