TLC Charter Chatter
A weekly newsletter written to parents of the TLC
Mrs. Stewart
Happy Mother’s Day! As we celebrate this day, it is important to remember the ultimate teachers for our children are their parents. Children learn the most from them. They model them, they develop similar values and beliefs. It is such an awesome responsibility. It is always so important we try to do the job of parenting as best we can. We all realize the sacrifice and challenges that face us as we continue in the life long job of parenting. Yes, it is a life long job. As our children grow, we need to adjust and refine the role we play, but we continue to be the parent who guides and listens and suggests when it is wanted. There are many stages to parenting. Enjoy the moment and the stage you are now experiencing.

Personal Days for Next School Year 2019/2020
VERY IMPORTANT CHANGE for our upcoming 2019/2020 school year Beginning August 5, 2019, we are reducing personal/family days for students from 10 days down to 7 days. Allowing 7 days is still much higher than what the district schools allow and we feel 7 days is more beneficial for the school and for each students’ education.

We had so much fun celebrating our wonderful mothers this week!
During Science, we worked hard all week long to craft lovely bouquets with petals describing all of the things that make our moms extra special!
We also created customized placemats to use during our Mother’s Day Luncheon. We are very grateful to all of the mothers and grandmothers who joined us for this special event!
Initial Phase
First, we would like to wish all the amazing Moms in our class a very Happy Mother’s Day! We hope you all enjoy your special day, you deserve it!
Thank you to everyone who came out to support our jog-a-thon! Our class worked so hard to prepare for it and it definitely showed! We are so proud of the amount of effort each student put in and are amazed at the amount of laps that the students ran! Now it is time to go out and collect money from your pledges and then return the jog-a-thon envelopes as soon as possible! There are many prizes for top earners for both classes and individuals!
Phase One:
The Jog-a-Thon was this Friday and the students did AMAZING! It is always so fun and inspiring to watch how determined and motivated they are to beat their previous years lap count. Great job Phase One students!
The students in Phase One will be doing testing May 20-24. There was a letter sent home in Monday’s red folder explaining testing and all the fun activities we have planned for the students in the afternoon. Please make sure that your child gets enough sleep, eats a good breakfast and is at school ON TIME. Testing will begin first thing in the morning.
Phase One teachers would like to thank all the parents and students that showered us with gifts this week in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week. We feel so special and loved!
Phase Two:
We had a great week in phase 2…we learned more about the gold rush and California history. We discussed the different routes to California and how dangerous it was to travel west. Did you know that many of the gold miners never got rich, but some business owners earned a fortune! We are going to use all of our gold rush knowledge to put on our gold rush day in June.
Please remember that state testing for phase 2 will begin on May 20th. Please see the information letter that came home on Friday.

Language Arts: Cerezo
This week all classes are spending a lot of time focusing on their essay writing skills. We have workshopped their introduction paragraphs and have shifted our focus to their body and conclusion paragraphs. These workshops have allowed me to read each paragraph individually and provide immediate feedback. I believe this will dramatically improve the students confidence and ability in essay writing.
We have also spent more time reading from our novel and preparing for the state standardized tests. Please remember that 7th/8th graders are testing May 20th-24th in Math, Language and Science (8th graders only).
Math:
Varsity- Doing practice and teaching for state testing ; may 20th- 24th
Honors- Doing practice and teaching for state testing ; may 20th- 24th

Verbal Expressions with Ms. Dane
Mask Museum display is on the wall showing the terrific research and projects that the 7/8 students did in Drama/Verbal Expression. They first made a short powerpoint showing some of the the styles of masks different cultures have and then decided on a design to develop for their blank mask. Paint, marker, glitter, foam were used to make the design and complete the project.
⅚ students wrote original scripts and made sock puppets and have been performing all week.
During testing weeks Ms. Dane’s enrichment will be Mixed Media collage and design elements.
Mock Trial competed Sat. May 4th, where we took 4 Individual Most Valuable Player awards. Congrats girls and onward to the next trial.
Physical Education:
Hiiii Everyone & Welcome Back from “Spring Break!” :)) Our “DCS Annual Jog-A-Thon” is on next Friday, May 10th, & our Students “Pledge Forms” are Due May 7th, whether they collected Jog-A-Thon Pledges or not!!!! Please feel free to help your students to collect money for DCS by taking advantage of posting their pledge form on “Social Media” as we too are parents have done this for our children to help raise money for their schools!!!! 😉
Also, as a quick friendly reminder as the weather is getting hot, please remind students that they should be applying “Deodorants/Antiperspirants/Baby Powder or Sanitary Wipes” in the morning before they are coming to school and showering daily; as their bodies have already begun puberty even though there may be no signs of it showing physically!!!!
Thank You!!! 🙂
Millennium High School
TLC/ Millennium High School recently entered into an agreement with Interquest Detection Canines, Inc., to provide trained detection canines to conduct random, unannounced inspections of all campus locations in the district.
These canines are trained to detect the presence of illicit drugs, alcohol, and gunpowder-based items. Campus buildings, parking lots, and grounds will be randomly inspected for prohibited items. If detected and found, the administration will initiate the appropriate disciplinary action.
These canines are non-aggressive retrieving breeds such as golden and labrador retrievers. They are trained to discriminate specific “scents” of contraband items and indicate the area where the scent is detected. Interquest provides service to over 1,200 public school districts across the nation.
With the recent publicity concerning the dramatic increase in teenage drug use, Tracy Learning Center / Millennium High School is taking every reasonable precaution to insure a safe and healthy learning environment for all concerned.
Respectfully,
Virginia Stewart
Executive Director
