Personal Days for Next School Year 2019/2020

VERY IMPORTANT CHANGE for our upcoming 2019/2020 school year Beginning August 5, 2019, we are reducing personal/family days for students from 10 days down to 7 days. Allowing 7 days is still much higher than what the district schools allow and we feel 7 days is more beneficial for the school and for each students’ education.

NOW HIRING:  Athletic Coaches

Incoming 7th Graders – Very Important!

As required by California law, (Health and Safety Code 120325 – 120375), parents need to provide proof of receiving the Tdap vaccine (Pertussis – Whooping Cough Booster).

All students entering 7th – 12th grades must have proof of a Tdap booster shot. Documentation must state the shot was given on or after their 7th birthday. This means ALL current 6th graders must get up to date.

It is important that you begin now, to ensure your child get their vaccination and to avoid appointment delays.

Receiving the immunizations and ensuring they are up to date now, will not only protect them against Pertussis, but also ensure class placement and prevent exclusion from school in the coming year.  No 7th-12 grade students will be allowed to attend school next year without up to date immunizations.

TK

It has been an exciting week of learning in TK! We learned about the life cycles of the chicken and the frog! We participated in several life cycle art projects, illustrating the growth process of each, starting from the egg. Did you know that female frogs can lay up to 4,000 eggs at a time?

We also studied plants this week. We learned that plants need: sunlight, water, and soil to grow. We also learned to identify and label the: stem, leaves, roots, and flower of a plant. Finally, we studied the life cycle of a plant starting from the seed. Be sure to ask us about the new and interesting things we’ve learned!

Initial Phase

Next week our students will be participating in some testing where we will be able to see how much they have learned and grown! This test will only take a couple minutes and is done one on one with a teacher. So it is important to note that your child will not be testing every day. We need your help to make sure that your student gets a good nights sleep, has a nutritious breakfast before coming to school, and encourage them to do their best. Students will be participating in fun activities each day that we are testing. On Friday, we will be walking to the park. If you haven’t returned your child’s permission slip please do so by Monday.

Don’t forget to send in your jog-a-thon envelopes with your collected pledges!

Phase One:

The students in Phase One will be participating in some testing next week. For our first graders they will be tested one on one with a teacher and will only take a few minutes. The second graders will take their test on the ChromeBooks and will also only take a couple of minutes. Students will not be testing everyday, rather they will only test two days next week. Encourage your child to do their best, get enough sleep every night, eat a good breakfast and be at school on time.

To celebrate our testing week, every afternoon there will be some fun activities. Wednesday, the fun activity will be a walking field trip to the park. If you have not turned in the permission slip please do so ASAP. There will also be a raffle in the morning at Unity for those students that were at school on time and tried their best on their test. Good luck!!

Phase Two:

We had a great week in phase  2…we learned more about the gold rush and California history.  We discussed the different routes to California and how dangerous it was to travel west.  Did you know that many of  the gold miners never got rich, but some business owners earned a fortune!  We are going to use all of our gold rush knowledge to put on our gold rush day in June.

Please remember that state testing for phase 2 will begin on May 20th.  Please see the information letter that came home on Friday.

A note from Mr. Bird

This week, our Falcon Historians are continuing our unit titled “Road to the Revolution.” We are having fun learning about the many causes leading to the Revolutionary War. Our Falcon Historians learned about the French and Indian War, Sugar and Stamp Acts, Proclamation of 1763, and the Committees of Correspondence so far. They created amazing acrostic poems to describe the Royal Proclamation, wrote letters to me expressing their opinions about a classroom supplies tax (fake tax, of course!), and will be creating protest posters to boycott British goods after learning about the Townshend Acts this week. To end this week, we will be analyzing Paul Revere’s famous engraving depicting the Boston Massacre.

Science with Ms. Diaz

5/6th science have finished state testing in science and have moved on to learning about the environment, habitats and ecosystems. Students have set up their own brine shrimp hatcheries, testing

how a change in salinity affects shrimp hatching. They will continue to work with these and other organisms for the rest of the trimester

LA with Ms. Rodieck

This week we did State Testing, but also had the opportunities to learn what it will be like to have block classes next year.  Scholastic and Honors continued to read Full Cicada Moon and Varsity continued with Shooting the Moon.  Soon all three classes will be reading Romeo and Juliet.

All three classes had the opportunity to work on their SWO project and to read, write, and understand poetry.  Next week we will have weekly words again – and a quiz on Friday.

LA with Ms. Christensen

This week in Language arts the students took their SBAC test.  They put a lot of time and effort into the writing portions of the test.  Scholastic and Varsity also read from our book Shooting the Moon and Honors started reading Full Cicada Moon.  This book is set in 1969 about a half-African-American and half-Japanese girl named Mimi who is determined to beat the odds and become an astronaut.  The story is told in poems from Mimi’s viewpoint.

In Humanities, we completed our art unit and will prepare for our final and begin our final unit in music.  The students are also working on their SWO projects during this time.  They will show these on May 29th at the Transitional Night at the Museum event at DCS.

A few of the classes have yet to begin this project, and will following state testing week!

Physical Education:

Also, as a quick friendly reminder as the weather is getting hot, please remind students that they should be applying “Deodorants/Antiperspirants/Baby Powder or Sanitary Wipes” in the morning before they are coming to school and showering daily; as their bodies have already begun puberty even though there may be no signs of it showing physically!!!!
