A weekly newsletter written to parents of the TLC

Virginia Stewart

As May draws to a close, both students and staff take a deep breath as we prepare for the one last push to the end of the year.  But this also has been a week of celebrations.  It is so rewarding to see our Millennium seniors being recognized for all their hard work. The Tracy Press wrote a great article about 3 of a senior athletes – All whom have been a TLC since Kindergarten.  Every staff member has played a part in these student’s lives would like them to know how proud we are of their efforts.  Way to go Falcons!

Congratulations to all our Graduates.  Last night’s graduation was very special and we cannot wait to see what you accomplish in the future.

Personal Days for Next School Year 2019/2020

VERY IMPORTANT CHANGE for our upcoming 2019/2020 school year Beginning August 5, 2019, we are reducing personal/family days for students from 10 days down to 7 days. Allowing 7 days is still much higher than what the district schools allow and we feel 7 days is more beneficial for the school and for each students’ education.

Incoming 7th Graders – Very Important!

As required by California law, (Health and Safety Code 120325 – 120375), parents need to provide proof of receiving the Tdap vaccine (Pertussis – Whooping Cough Booster) and proof of receiving 2 doses of Varicella (Chicken Pox) Vaccine

All students entering 7th – 12th grades must have proof of a Tdap booster shot. Documentation must state the shot was given on or after their 7th birthday. This means ALL current 6th graders must get up to date. They must also show proof of 2 Varicella -Chicken Pox Vaccines.

It is important that you begin now, to ensure your child get their vaccination and to avoid appointment delays.

Receiving the immunizations and ensuring they are up to date now, will not only protect them against Pertussis, but also ensure class placement and prevent exclusion from school in the coming year.  No 7th-12 grade students will be allowed to attend school next year without up to date immunizations.

TK

This week in TK, we learned how to care for our environment!

Our pal Wasteful Wally stopped by to teach us all about: recycling, reusing materials, and preventing waste. We learned the importance of conserving water and electricity. Plus, we discussed donating things to people in need, rather than throwing them away. We also began to share our Recycled Art projects; and, boy, oh boy, did we come up with some creative ideas. Our classroom was filled with bird feeders, pencil holders, and piggy banks galore!

Initial Phase

Next week our students will be participating in some testing where we will be able to see how much they have learned and grown! This test will only take a couple minutes and is done one on one with a teacher. So it is important to note that your child will not be testing every day. We need your help to make sure that your student gets a good nights sleep, has a nutritious breakfast before coming to school, and encourage them to do their best. Students will be participating in fun activities each day that we are testing. On Friday, we will be walking to the park. If you haven’t returned your child’s permission slip please do so by Monday.

Don’t forget to send in your jog-a-thon envelopes with your collected pledges!

Phase One:

This week, the students in Phase One participated in their first testing week and did a fantastic job! They were all so excited and eager to participate. Each day, there were some fun activities  in the afternoon to keep the students motivated. The teachers are so proud of how focused they all were and how serious they took this. Teachers will be sending home these results with report cards at the end of the trimester.

For the last couple of weeks in science the students have been learning about engineering and next week they will be construction their own marble run. They will be building these in groups and presenting them the following week. If you have any supplies that the students could use for these please send them in with your student.

Phase Two:

Our phase 2 students had their SBAC state tests this week in LA and math. We are so proud of their hard work and how seriously they are taking it. We will continue testing next week. Thank you to the parents who donated extra snacks for our testing days. We also enjoyed some “brain breaks” during the week, including walking to the park and a dance party on Friday!

We have selected chaperones for our upcoming field trip to Columbia on June 4th. We are excited to learn more about the Gold Rush on our upcoming visit to this fun old town!

Please save the date for the 5th grade information night (for current 4th graders) on June 3rd at 5:30 p.m.

A note from Ms. Diaz

It was an interesting week in class with hatching brine shrimp eggs after creating hatcheries with four different salt conditions. We found out that brine shrimp need to be in salt water in order to hatch, and will now try to get additional eggs to hatch by adding more salt to the hatcheries. Students have started their trimester project booklets and will continue to work on this the rest of the trimester. We will be having a test within the next couple of weeks about what we’ve learned so far about ecosystems and environmental conditions. Keep exploring!

A Note about Testing:

This week every student spent ample time on State Testing. We have been practicing thoroughly all year long and have now completed the science (8th grade only), math, and language arts tests.

In reflection many of the students felt very secure and confident about their testing experience and I am confident that no matter how each student did, they have worked hard, practiced diligently, and demonstrated the necessary amount of seriousness and focus required during testing.

The scores for each test will be given in a couple of weeks! Look out for any notices or information sent home by your students’ teachers about their results.

If your student was absent during testing we will have make up days scheduled to accommodate them.

Job well done students! It was a long and grueling week for all of us, but I am certain their hard work will pay off!

There are only five weeks left of school! Each class will continue to work and continue their curriculum until the very last week of school. There are many excited events for all to participate in in the coming weeks!

Verbal Expressions with Ms. Dane

Mask Museum display is on the wall showing the terrific research and projects that the 7/8 students did in Drama/Verbal Expression.  They first made a short powerpoint showing some of the the styles of masks different cultures have and then decided on a design to develop for their blank mask.  Paint, marker, glitter, foam were used to make the design and complete the project.

⅚ students wrote original scripts and made sock puppets and have been performing all week.

During testing weeks Ms. Dane’s enrichment will be Mixed Media collage and design elements.

Mock Trial competed Sat. May 4th, where we took 4 Individual Most Valuable Player awards.  Congrats girls and onward to the next trial.

Physical Education:

Also, as a quick friendly reminder as the weather is getting hot, please remind students that they should be applying “Deodorants/Antiperspirants/Baby Powder or Sanitary Wipes” in the morning before they are coming to school and showering daily; as their bodies have already begun puberty even though there may be no signs of it showing physically!!!!
