TLC CHARTER CHATTER

A weekly newsletter written to parents of the TLC

Thank you for the great showing at the Homecoming Parade on Wednesday.  I believe it is the greatest student participation we have ever had.  The floats were magnificent, the children spirited and the crowd along the street was awesome.  Of course, the band was a great lead for the parade.  Thank you for enduring the hottest weather we have had for a parade as well.

Finally, the homecoming events will come to an end and we will settle down into October.  October is the end of the first quarter for the high school.  Quarter grades are more like a progress report.  These grades do not go on the transcript.  The end of the semester is fifty school days later.  That gives students who are not doing well a chance to recover.  The most damaging thing to hurt grades is missing assignments.  It is important to note that we do not accept late work.  Assignments must be done on time.

Please also remember that attendance is another factor affecting success in school.  Students need to be on time and avoid missing school whenever possible.  When students are absent, they do have a  time limit to make up missing work, but it is so much harder to catch up when students are absent.  The state considers students who miss more than 10% of the school year as chronic absent students.  Schools are judged on how well their students do with attending school regularly.

A huge thank you to the above sponsors for helping make this year’s golf tournament such a success!!  Thanks to our community sponsors, participants, and donors, $22,079 has been raised toward the completion of our weight room!  Stay tuned!  It’ll be an exciting addition for both the athletics and physical education programs!

Personal Days for Next School Year 2019/2020

VERY IMPORTANT CHANGE for our upcoming 2019/2020 school year Beginning August 5, 2019, we are reducing personal/family days for students from 10 days down to 7 days. Allowing 7 days is still much higher than what the district schools allow and we feel 7 days is more beneficial for the school and for each students’ education.

TK

This week in TK we learned all about the seasons!

We started off the week learning about all the seasons.  The students were able to taste something from the Winter and Summer season.  Hot chocolate and cotton candy… both were favorites!!

For Spring and Fall the students were able to taste maple syrup and yummy, crisp apples!  What a treat!

The students were able to draw pictures of their favorite parts of each season!  Some of their favorite smells were the pinecone, peppermint and barbecue sauce.  They certainly had fun learning all about our four seasons!

Initial Phase

Check out the three different Scholastic Let’s Find Out magazines in your child’s folder! We focused on character building for social studies this week. We talked about what sharing means, how to be a good friend, and revisited school rules. You can login to the website from the informational sheet previously sent home to watch the videos and play the games that go along with each magazine.

Happy first days of fall! It looks like we will have our first bit of cooler weather next week, which means students will be coming to school with sweatshirts. Be sure to write your student’s name in their jacket.

The preschool health fair is this Saturday from 9:00-1:00!

Phase One:

This was a fun week celebrating our MHS Homecoming! Each day was a fun dress up day and Wednesday was the  Homecoming parade. Come support our MHS Falcons tonight at the football game at Tracy High.

Congratulations to all the students that worked so hard and met their AR goal! We will have our first AR party sometime next week. New AR goals will be sent home on October 7th. Encourage your student to read two books a week to help them stay on track.

Phase Two:

What a fun Homecoming week!  Thank you to everyone who participated in the parade and spirit days.  Our Future Falcons sure showed their pride!

On Wednesday, Phase 2 will be welcoming “Cruzin Critters”, which is a live animal show!  This is a great hands-on way to wrap up our science unit on animals and ecosystems.  We are asking that parents please consider donating $5 to cover the cost of the show.  Thank you!

New AR goals have been assigned.  Make sure to check your child’s AR chart and agenda weekly!

Mrs. Zuniga/Mrs. Bengson’s Math:.

Mrs. Nijjar’s Math:

Varsity: In this week, we started with review of the multiplication facts and then continued with 2-digit x 1-digit, 3-digit x 1-digit, and 2-digit x 2-digit multiplication. Students played multiplication Bingo, solved riddles, and puzzles to reinforce the multiplication facts and strategies.

Multiplication: The students should be practicing multiplication facts at home whenever possible. I have provided each student with a multiplication chart.

Scholastic: In this week students learned about estimating products and properties of multiplication. Students learned about various strategies and properties to use to multiply whole numbers and decimal numbers.

Multiplication: The students should be practicing multiplication facts at home whenever possible.

Honors:  In this week students learned about solving multi-step equations using the Distributive property, getting rid of the constants, and the coefficients. In the coming weeks students will be learning to solve complex multi-step algebraic expressions.

Ms. Rodieck’s Language Arts and Humanities

Scholastic and Honors finished up Love That Dog this week and had their ‘Final’ for the book.  It counts as a Weekly Quiz Grade in the Grade Book.  They also submitted poems to PoeticPower.com for the chance at being published.  If they are selected, you will be notified to give permission to published (in a few months).  Next week they will be starting the Pentathlon Book Fever 1793.  This book is based on historical events surrounding the Yellow Fever in Philadelphia.

In Humanities, they are nearly done with the Fundamentals of Music Unit.  This has included creating a slideshow with a partner about a musical instrument and learning about the different Genres of Music.

Varsity is continuing with Love That Dog and will have their final soon, also.  They are currently working on their Instrument slideshows and will be presenting them in class next week.  They are also continuing to work on writing a good paragraph and practicing what they have learned in diagramming, so far.

Language Arts with Mr. Harding

We are concluding our first book study and the students are exploring their own discoveries through our close reading strategies. Along with learning the basics about the Hero’s Journey, Elements of Plot, and poetry, students are questioning the text and probing deeper into implied messages left by the author. Our study of how stories are made will certainly lend itself to students writing their own original stories in the near future.

Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy

Honors students finished their lesson on the rise of Sumerian city-states to understand how geographic challenges led to form city-states. Pictured below is a student listing geographic problem Sumerians faced and the solutions they came up with. Students then created real estate advertisements to attract people to one of the city-states in Sumer. We played quiz review games on Friday to prepare for the quiz on Monday, 9/30, on the rise of Sumerian city-states.

Scholastic and Varsity students are working in their interactive notebooks to learn about Sumer. They are reviewing power words for a vocabulary quiz on Friday, 9/27, and reading about Sumerian life.

All social studies notebooks or folders have been sent home with students to study.

Science with Ms. Diaz:

Greetings scientists! Did you know that you can make a paperclip float in the air? This week we found out that due to something called a magnetic field, a magnet can attract steel/iron objects from a distance. The bigger the magnet, the bigger the field! Amazing, isn’t it? Test scores including corrections have been put into Aeries, so do congratulate your student for a job well done in their learning journey. Study guides for next week’s Science Test #2 (covering forces, motion, energy) were given and filled out in class. The Hon/Sch classes also received two handouts about magnets that were glued and completed in their science notebooks. Completion of all three were checked and will be added to the gradebook. Friday was also a monthly agenda and science notebook check. Are they in good condition? Are they filled out? These are what I look for to get full points for each check. Finally, I have created a Google Classroom for all classes. Students were given the codes last week and need to be sure and join by this Friday. Hon/Sch classes were given a HW assignment, due Friday 11:59pm, and future announcements, assignments and tests will be posted on Google Classroom.

Google classroom:

Hon/Scholastic code→ jp9wlua

Varsity code→ 8d4s9b

Next week will be Science Test #2, on Thursday, October 3rd.

Last but not least, come one and come all to check out the DCS science blog site at: www.tlcdiscoverychannel.weebly.com. Read all about The Fox (Karen Garcia), Smallest Creatures (Kylie Edwards), Laika the Space Dog (Ashlan Brantley) and Black Holes Collision (James Caldwell). Prepare to be SCIENCED!

September Teacher Highlight!

Ms. Greene

This year, 7/8 has the privilege of gaining a new Language Arts teacher: Ms. Greene! The students have been enjoying her class and have nothing but praise and admiration of her.

My name is Ms Greene, I grew up here in Tracy my entire life and went to West High. After high school I went to Sac State and received my bachelors in English. I am currently going to school for my credentials in Stockton at Teachers College of San Joaquin where I go every Wednesday evening. I am a die hard baseball fan, Go A’s! I also enjoy reading and swimming. I hope to have a great first year of teaching here at Discovery.

Language Arts with Ms. Greene

This week has been eventful with homecoming and spirit week going on in class. My homeroom, Honors, has done a great job this week with spirit having almost the whole class participate each day.

In Honors, we have started writing body paragraphs along with our introductions. The had their first writing assignment with the 2 types of paragraphs due on Wednesday and did quite well. Along with writing, we have been going steady reading Fever 1793 and the students seem to be enjoying it while we begin to see the plot develop. Students are continuing to be able to identify the different parts of a plot throughout the book as we read.

In Varsity, students are also writing introductions and body paragraphs. They are beginning to develop strong thesis statements and focus their ideas in the body paragraphs. They have been moving right along in the book and are starting to get to the rising action of it and are becoming more interested.

In Scholastic, students are similarly writing both parts of a paragraph and are doing quite well with the body paragraphs, keeping them focused and related to the topic. They are extremely enjoying the book and are starting to be able to summarize and identify the parts of the plot.

In all classes, we have done a debate based on articles we read related to health and wellness. Students are opinionated and know how to support their opinions with evidence. This week has been great, let’s keep up the good work.

Reminder: Study vocabulary weekly!!

Language Arts with Mrs. Cerezo

Welcome to Week 8! Time is flying!

All classes are continuing to read and discuss Fever 1793 and are beginning to make connections between the characters, the era, and its ramifications on today. The students are enjoying the novel and are excited to finish it! We project to be finished within the next week or two.

In each class we have begun our study of body paragraphs. For the newest writing assignments students have been asked to write both the introduction and first body paragraph. This assignment was due Wednesday and each student met with me to conference and discuss their work. We are moving slowly with writing this year and are pleased with the amount of progress students have made in such a short amount of time.

Finally, all students worked on creating a Review Game for the class. They were assigned a group and a topic and had to create a game that we could play to help us begin to review for our final (coming up in a few weeks!)

Math with Mr. Dhillon

Varsity :- doing unit 2 completed lesson 1 to lesson 11 ( finished quiz1 and quiz 2 )and will be doing lesson 12 dividing whole numbers by decimal.

Campus Beautification

Mr. Hepner, Ms. Zaca, and all of Discovery staff want to thank each and every one of the 22 students who showed up last Saturday for our very first Discovery Campus Beautification! Students spent the three hours cleaning the eating tables in Discovery and Primary, cleared the baseball and softball field of debris and trash, pulled out any weeds, and helped Mr. Hepner prune the trees and bushes on campus. We are ever so grateful for the dedication our students show towards maintaining our campus and want to thank each and every parent for supporting that drive and motivation in their students. Our next beautification will take place in the end of October (date will be released early in the month).

Music Exploration with Mr. Dougherty:

DCS Music Exploration is in the middle of a pop opera project. This means that each class will

  1. Create, compose, and perform the music and story for a class pop opera.
  2. Decide on a setting, theme, and plot for the pop opera.
  3. Complete the lyrics and melody for five partially written pop opera songs.
  4. Decide on singers, movements, and staging for each song.
  5. Create or find props, costumes, and scenery for the show.
  6. Perform the pop opera in front of a live audience.

So far each class has come up with a very entertaining storyline. We are having a blast. Stay tuned to find out what happens in each of the sagas.

Art with Ms. Losen

This week in art we finalized our film premises and started storyboards. We also learned more about cinematography including shot varieties and camera movements so that we can begin filming later this week.

Spanish with Ms. Polo

For these next 2 weeks look for Worksheets Abeja and Ballena in your student’s folders/notebooks. There are 30 words/phrases they are responsible for. Those are highlighted. They should be able to read both aloud as we will have an oral quiz next week on reading A or B. They will be graded on pronunciation. We practice this every class. We will also begin Spanish Bee which is 25 commands/questions plus the 5 questions we use daily in class that will be written in their notebooks. Ex. Can I go to the bathroom (in Spanish)

Mr. Harding’s HR my Mon/Wed class in D9 is the last class to take examen #1. That will be this Thurs. We reviewed last Thurs.and we will be reviewing today Tuesday 9.17 as well. They should study in workroom tomorrow!

Math with Mr. Creasman

Precalculus

Even during Homecoming week, math goes on! In Pre-Calculus we have been utilizing what we learned on parent functions from Unit 2 to now graph more complex functions. This is a challenging topic, but can be very rewarding when we get our graphs right!

Algebra 1A and Pre-algebra

Algebra 1A and Pre-algebra have both finished Unit 1 recently and we are getting into the nuts and bolts of what we can and can’t do with the Real Numbers. Grade reports for unit 1 have gone home for both of these classes. At this point in the year, my students have adjusted and are aware of the expectations and pace of math class. We are learning new math every day!

Math with Mrs. Griffin

Calculus

This week in Calculus we focused on our Limits Unit and we learned a lot about infinite limits and limits at infinity. Although they sound like the same thing, they really are not! Students really have to rely on a lot of prior knowledge from Algebra and Precalculus in order to be successful with this concept. We took a quiz today to finish out our week. Next week we will prepare for our end of the unit test!

Meet The Coaches!

Hello, my name is Destinee Rapp and I am the girls varsity volleyball coach. This is my first year coaching. I started coaching here at Millennium because I have always loved volleyball and it is something that I enjoyed playing in high school. I was mostly interested in coaching to help Coach Balsamo maintain the volleyball program here at Millennium in a successful way. The turn out for volleyball was amazing and we have so many talented girls. My goal as a coach was to better learn the game, but to also build relationships with these young women as a mentor and coach. I have a heart for teenage girls and helping them grow into mature and responsible young adults. I have enjoyed being on the coaching team and I love the growth I am seeing with the team. My hope was that coaching would become something I love to do and want to continue to do, so far I am all in. Coaching has taught me a lot about discipline and dedication and I am here for it. GO FALCONS!

Chatter  Week of September20, 2019

Next week we will celebrate Homecoming 2019.  This is a special time for the Tracy Learning Center because our homecoming is not just for high school.  We are all involved from our smallest in preschool to our oldest in high school and all those who return for the home game at the end of the week.

The spirit is high this week as our classes and nests get their float assembled for the parade on Wednesday.  It is always well attended and a fun event.  This year we will be celebrating heroes as our homecoming theme.

Thank you, by the way for being a hero for your children.  We all realize the sacrifices of time and energy and other resources you make every day for your children.  Parents are often the unsung heroes, but know you are one!

We hope you enjoy the homecoming events you attend.

TK

This week in TK we have been busy getting ready for Homecoming week!

Our theme this year is Super heroes and the students learned that community members are super heroes too!

The students created their own masks to wear in the parade and they look fabulous.

We also worked on an All About Me super hero worksheet that told us about our favorite things.

Spirit Week:

9-23 : Blue and Gold

9-24 : Red, White and Blue

9-25 : Super Hero Day

9-26 : Twin Day

 9-27 : Black and Gold

Initial Phase

Thank you to everyone who donated apples to our classroom! We had so much fun learning about apples this week! We have explored the parts of an apple- seeds, skin, flesh, core, stem, and leaf. We watched how an apple tree changes in each season throughout the year. Ask your student what season apples grow on an apple tree. We are learning new vocabulary terms such as orchard. Taste testing the apples was our favorite part of the week! We discovered that different colored apples have different tastes on the inside. Many of us thought the green apples are sour and the apples with red and yellow are more sweet! Ask your child what they have learned about apples! We will continue or apple discoveries next week!

Phase One:

Does your student want to go to our first AR party of the year? AR goals are due Friday, September 27th! Encourage your student to read books within their level and take quizzes. They must pass with an 80% or higher for their points to count. Good luck to all our Phase One students and happy reading!

Don’t forget that in honor of our very own MHS homecoming, next week is a spirit week. The dress up days are as follows: Monday is extreme blue and gold day, Tuesday is red, white and blue day, Wednesday is super hero day, Thursday is twin day and Friday is black and gold day. Wednesday is also the homecoming parade downtown. In order for your child to walk in the parade with the school, they must have a permission slip turned in. Hope to see you there!

Phase Two:

Please congratulate our first ever “TLC Homecoming Lord and Lady” of Primary!  4th grade students who wanted to be considered were asked to write a persuasive paragraph about why they should be chosen.  There were 12 finalists and the judges (our wonderful elective teachers) selected DJ and Nimrit!  They will get to ride on their own float in the parade on Wednesday!

Don’t forget next week is Spirit Week and early dismissal on Wednesday.

Mrs. Zuniga/Mrs. Bengson’s Math:.

Varsity: Our class has just finished practicing plotting decimals on a number line up to hundredths. Students did an activity where they had been given a decimal number and had to line up in order, starting from zero. We will be working towards comparing and ordering decimals and plan to have our next quiz on decimals Wednesday.

Scholastic: Our class has begun division of whole numbers up to 3 digit divisors. We keep focusing on estimation to help make our division problems much easier to solve. We talked about rounding to create compatible numbers in which we can mentally solve the division problem in our head. Our first quiz for Unit 2 is set for next Friday, so make sure students are practicing and studying at home.

Honors: Our first unit is coming to a close with our last lesson completed Wednesday. Students took their final quiz Friday and will be preparing for their Unit 1 Test next Wednesday spending two days studying for the test. However, I do recommend that students study for the test over the weekend as well by returning to their notes and previous homework assignments. Students will be receiving a study guide for the test on Monday.

Mrs. Nijjar’s Math:

Varsity: In this consecutive Palindrome week, we continued learning about decimals – adding and subtracting decimals, comparing decimals, rounding decimals, and multiplying decimals. Students worked on their Unit-1 Study guide to prepare for the Unit-1 test.

Multiplication: The students should be practicing multiplication facts at home whenever possible. I have provided each student with a multiplication chart.

Scholastic: The students took the first Unit test and performed at the class average of 91%. In addition, we started with the first lesson of the second unit which is about multiplication and estimating products. In the coming weeks, students will be learning about properties of multiplication and will be using them to solve multiplication problems.

Multiplication: The students should be practicing multiplication facts at home whenever possible.

Honors:  The students took their first Unit test. They prepared by completing/reviewing the Study Guide and put their best efforts to take the test. In the coming weeks, students will be starting with the second unit.

Ms. Rodieck’s Language Arts and Humanities

Scholastic and Honors will be finishing reading Love That Dog this next week and they will have a Novel Final on Friday.  This means that the weekly quiz will be a little longer and include questions from the book along with writing a short answer paragraph.  The students will also be selecting one of their poems to submit to poetic power and will be writing the first paragraph a literary response essay.  They have also finished their first mini-project in Humanities and we have been presenting them in class.  Whoa, what a lot, but they are handling it well.

Varsity is starting to write one paragraph essays.  Our focus is a hook, or sentence to catch readers’ attention, topic sentence, 3-5 details, and a conclusion.   They are still reading Love That Dog and will finish it in the next few weeks.  They have started diagramming and learned that it is not that scary or hard – if we take it one step at a time.

Language Arts with Mr. Harding

We are finishing our first novel, and gearing up for projects that show what we know and what we can do.  We have already created a dog pound and adopted most of the precious pups that showed up during 5th-grade summer orientation. We followed the narrator down a sorrowful path that turned to redemption through prose. I look forward to seeing how many ways our learners can visualize and express their interpretations of the themes.

Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy

This week in social studies, students are starting their second unit on early civilizations (Mesopotamia, Egypt, & Kush). We are starting with Mesopotamia and learning about the rise of city-states in this region. To start, all students labeled and colored a map of Mesopotamia and defined new vocabulary – see picture below!

Honors students are working in groups to take on the role of ancient Mesopotamians facing a series of problems. Students are learning about the geographic challenges ancient Mesopotamians faced and the solutions they came up with to solve these problems. Students will be learning about these geographic challenges and proposing solutions for them as if they were ancient Mesopotamians!

Scholastic/Varsity students are working in their interactive notebooks and learning new vocabulary. They will also be learning about daily life in ancient Sumer and key figures of this time period such as Hammurabi and Gilgamesh.

Honors will have a quiz next week on the rise of city-states. Scholastic/Varsity will have a vocabulary quiz next week.

Google Classroom has been set up for all classes. This will be a great way to communicate with all classes. We will post due dates for projects as well as quiz/test dates. Certain materials and videos will also be posted for students.

     Honors: pgpilb

     Scholastic: 4dryw3l

     Varsity: 5u3y0p

Science with Ms. Diaz:

Greetings scientists! This week was all about attraction…well, MAGNETIC attraction that is! What are magnets, how do they work, what are magnets attracted to aside from other magnets? Ask your savvy science student this as they can explain it to you. Tests have been graded, put into Aeries, and students were able to make test corrections. Grades with added points for corrections will be updated soon. Check out the pics of the test high scorers from the Varsity 1 class (below). Also pictured below is a picture of the art wall for D9 science, courtesy of 5th period (Scholastic 2). This month’s theme was Homecoming Heroes, so we featured the great intellects of science/math Aristotle, Euclid, Pythagoras, Archimedes “dressed” as Marvel characters. Next week will be quite “the shock” as we learn about electricity.

Last but not least, come one and come all to check out the DCS science blog site at: www.tlcdiscoverychannel.weebly.com. Read all about Marine Biology (Alexa Chavez), The Loudest and Biggest Animal (Maci Dominguez), We the Two-headed Snake (Avery Haines) and Area 51 (Roxie Burns). Prepare to be SCIENCED!

Awesomely, interesting announcements:

  • Mission to Mars—> registration info packets available from Ms. Diaz and Ms. Dominguez. Or, email cdiaz@tracylc.net for a PDF copy. Final parent meeting before the registration deadline is on Tuesday, Oct. 1st @ 6pm room D9 (DCS building). Registration and deposit payment is due October 4th.
  • Next science test Thursday, October 3rd

Stay curious & keep exploring!!!

Teacher Highlight!

Ms.

Greene

This week in Language Arts we have been continuing our writing journey with writing introductions. In all classes the introduction from their third writing prompt was due and their had been a tremendous growth in their quality of writing. Students are beginning to excel in creating their own thesis to multiple different types of essays.

Along with the introductions, all classes had debates that were focused on articles that were about current events and relations to health and wellness. Students had great arguments and valued each others opinions during the debate. I would like to shout out to 3 students in particular: Honors-Joshua Wlliams, Varsity- Angel Martinez, and Scholastic- Alyssa Garcia.

On Friday students will be starting to write in their newly created journals for Free Thought Friday. These journals will be used weekly for creative writing prompts in which they will be able to write freely as long as it applies to the topic.

Reminder: Study vocabulary weekly!!

Language Arts with Mrs. Cerezo

This week in Language Arts each student has continued their work on introductions and began their work on body paragraphs. We took notes on what constitutes a well-written body paragraph and began to write our own for this week’s next essay prompt (due Wednesday 9/25).

Classes also continued to practice their oral presentation skills with their weekly Soundbites! The Honors class has begun to work on Soundbites as a competition and Scholastic and Varsity were able to choose their own Soundbite articles to present to the class. They are making headway in their presentation skills and are certainly growing in confidence.

Math with Mrs. Rapp:

This week in D6 varsity is wrapping up the week with dividing decimals. This has been a difficult topic for some students, but perseverance and support has helped us make it through. We have been doing a lot of practice with multiplication facts. This included playing games of war and around the world to help improve our skills. Scholastic is ending the week with application word problems. We are getting close to the end of the unit and will be testing by the end of the week, early next week. Honors took their unit two test and we are anxious to see how they did in comparison to the other geometry classes. It is a good motivation for them to know what other class averages are so that we see where we stand and can continue to improve. Unit 2 has been a lot of fun, with activities and games to review and learn I feel as though this unit test should be better than our last.

Here is a picture of honors in action. This was a segment and angle proof scavenger hunt where students had to find the definitions to words they need to know for our two-column proofs.

Math with Mr. Dhillon

Varsity :- doing unit 2 completed lesson 1 to lesson 8 ( finished quiz1 and quiz 2 )and will be doing lesson 9dividing by 2 and 3 digit divisor

Scholastic :- Doing unit 2  currently doing word problems and review of equation and will have a quiz on thursday.

honors :- completed unit 2 and will start with unit 3 parallel lines and perpendicular lines

Social studies:

Scholastic and Honors classes learned about 7 of the many Roman Emperors of the Roman Empire. Students placed the emperors on their timeline on page 19 and were asked to write down either an achievement and a negative impact of their rule or of the emperor has no negative impacts, then they were to write two achievements. After completing the assignment, students discussed with each other and as a class how each emperor affected the power of Rome: how did he enhance the empire? How did he bring Ancient Rome closer to its downfall? By the end of the week, students also learned about the rise and spread of Christianity in Ancient Rome and how early Christians were persecuted by the Roman Emperors until Constantine declared Christianity the official religion of Ancient Rome. Students next week have their unit test on Ancient Rome next Thursday, September 26th.

Homecoming Parade Wednesday, September 25th, 2019

Here in Discovery, we have chosen Homer and the Iliad/Odyssey as our theme for our float. We decided to go with Homer for two reasons: one, he is considered one of the literary heroes in literature with his two epic poems and two, his books gave the world (especially those in the Science world) insight on how the ancient Greeks took care of their wounded.

Students have already started working hard on our float! Please remember that any student signed up to be part of the parade will need to bring any colored. twin/full-size bedsheet (preferably white) to school on Monday.

Technology with Ms. Ferguson

Technology is currently working through a unit on effective internet searches and reliable online resources.  The students are creating a newsletter in Google Docs on their favorite news company/outlet. Some examples include ESPN, E! News, NBC News, and BBC News.  Following this assignment, we are going to discuss whether or not their websites contain accurate information and how to know if they do not.

Check out this picture of one of the 5/6 students presenting last week’s Digital Media project!

Art with Ms. Losen

This week in art…

We created animal-hybrid illustrations and presented our “scientific findings” to the class. We also started our filmmaking module, diving into genre, loglines, and group movie pitches.

Meet The Coaches!

My name is Lucy Bengson. My mom named me after the famous show “I Love Lucy”.  I come from a sport oriented family. My Dad and my Aunt, competed in the summer Olympics in Helsinki representing my home country, Venezuela. My Dad ran the 110 meter hurdles, and my Aunt threw the Javelin. Years later, both of them represented Venezuela in the PanAmerican games in basketball. Both, my Dad and my Aunt, have been inducted into the Venezuelan Sports Hall of Fame. My siblings have also won trophies and medals in several sports, such as track and field, motocross, tennis, and BMX.

I played several sports when I was very young, such as softball, swimming, and soccer. I even tried ballet for a year, but the coach told my mom that I was too tall for it. I then started playing basketball when I was nine years old. I continued playing this sport until I graduated from Universidad de Carabobo, in Chemical Engineering. I represented the national team (in Venezuela) for one year. After that, I joined a volleyball club for female engineers in my home state, and I continuously played for another 15 years.

When I am not involved with school, I keep myself busy with one of my preferred hobbies, art. I have taken workshops from well known artists throughout the country. I have learned how to paint in several media, and have entered my pieces in a number of art shows in the valley. I also enjoy knitting and crocheting.

This is my second year as a volleyball coach, but my first at Millennium. I decided to coach, because I feel the need to give back, and transfer my knowledge and experience to my players. I will also try to become an assistant coach in basketball soon. My goals as a coach are to keep my players motivated, to build confidence in themselves, to support my players during games and at practice. I want to be approachable and fair with my players, and to instill a sense of pride and discipline in them. I want to be there for them, and to be a good role model.

I believe that my athletic program can contribute to the positive growth and development of my players, by my modeling the following:

Being on time for practice and games

Noticing, commending, and rewarding my players for positive behaviors and outcomes

Being respectful to all people that interact with me

Promoting a non-threatening environment by keeping the doors of communication open, and addressing the student’s flaws and needs with respect and dignity

Restorative Justice is our Discipline System

Tracy Learning Center uses a Restorative Justice system when dealing with discipline.  The day of simply deciding that students need to be suspended has been re-examined.  What educators realized is that telling a student they could not come to school hurt the educator more than the student.  The student being suspended was usually not a fan of school in the first place and the suspension felt more like a reward for the student and a punishment for the family.

Today, we use an approach that puts more responsibility for actions on the part of the student.  Students are held accountable for their actions and are asked to look at what they have done and look for ways to improve.  (This, of course, is not used for serious offenses but most school offenses that ended in suspensions were not severe).  From Discovery through high school, students are issued negative points for infractions.  If a student accumulates negative 20 points in a week, they report to a SOAR panel for review and suggestions for how to change the behavior.

The whole point of SOAR is to help students realize how they are being disruptive to the learning community.  Actions do not just affect the student who is disrupting.  The students who accepts responsibility usually find ways to remedy their actions.  The students who finds fault with others or the teacher usually blocks suggestions for change.

We all understand that some students receive negative 20 in one week.  They are usually very sorry and ready to fix the problem.  We are concerned when a student repeats the negative 20 week after week and we do have a progressive process in place when that happens.  Since we have a waiting list at most grade levels, we are able to take away a student’s preference to be enrolled if we cannot correct the behavior.  This is the last resort for us, but it is possible.

What is the most common cause for students to receive negatives?

You may wonder, what is the main reason students receive negatives.  It is talking to others or making comments when the teacher is giving directions or instructing.  This is a time when staff expects silence and attention of all students.  There are plenty of times in the day for quiet conversation with students in groups or pairs, but there are those explicit times when the attention of all students is expected.

Extremely Important

We have a huge number of families who have not turned in their child’s emergency forms for this school.  This is very important. These forms require a parent’s signature allowing ambulance transport for your child in case of a severe emergency. Parents were required to update these forms online prior to enrollment this year, print the emergency form and turn this form into the office. Many parents have not done this. Please do so immediately and drop off updated form in the office.

Here is the information to add or edit information on our AERIES Website.

https://sisweb.tusd.net/parentportal

Parent Data Confirmation is a feature of Aeries that allows parents to modify or enter student demographics, contacts, medical

conditions, and authorization information. It also allows documents to be available to parents. This process handles the normal

“Summer Re-Registration” of students where parents are normally required to fill out fresh emergency cards, sign various documents,

and establish authorizations. Date ranges are available to control when parents can modify or enter data, and parents can even be

locked out of the parent portal until they complete the process. Pre-enrolled student records will use their next grade value so data

confirmation can be completed for their upcoming school.

A banner message will display to the parent on their homepage if they have not completed the data confirmation process. The parent

can also access Data Confirmation from the Student Info tab dropdown.

TK

Wishing all our TK families a great weekend.

We are all excited to start focusing on our letters, numbers and sight words and look forward to sharing our accomplishments this week with some fun projects!

Phase One:

This week, the students participated in the first AIMS testing of the year. Your child will take it two more times this school year. At the end of the year, we will send home a comparison report showing their growth.

The students in Phase One continued their Map Skills unit in Social Studies. P3 learned about landforms and bodies of water, P4 and P5 did a Me On the Map project. We will continue our map skills unit for the next few weeks. Keep your eyes open for a take home project when we conclude this unit at the end of September.

Phase Two:

Our phase two students have started their monthly walk to the Tracy library.  P1 goes the first Thursday of the month, P7 goes the second Thursday, P8 goes the third Thursday of the month.  Our students really look forward to exploring the library and checking out books.  Please remember that students are responsible for returning their own books, on their own time.

We also continued our study of animal groups this week.  We have learned all about mammals, insects, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians.  Ask you child what they remember!

Mr. Martin is teaching our students a “Superhero” song to sing in the Homecoming Parade!  Please remember to return the permission slip if you would like your child to participate in the parade.  Parents are responsible for transporting their child to and from the parade.  Please see the information in the green folder today.

SWO NEWS

Now that pictures are done, the first SWO project will be due soon.  Fifth Graders will need to get a scrapbook for their SWO Projects.  This is a record of their learning throughout the year, but it is also a record of their learning through multiple years.  So, Sixth Graders add on to the scrapbook they started last year – they may need to get some additional filler pages.  The SWO Scrapbook Cover Page assignment will be due about a week after the Lifetouch Photos are sent home.  Students should have gotten a copy of the assignment this week.  If not, you can find it at https://rodieckla.weebly.com/swo-scrapbooks.html

If you are unable to get a scrapbook, please contact your son or daughter’s homeroom teacher or Mrs. Prescott at kprescott@tracylc.net.

Thank you

Our Top 5 Nest Point Earners for the week! Way to go Falcons!!!

Kestrel’s Top 5:

Saker’s Top 5:

Amur’s Top 5:

This week we had an AMAZING guest visitor at our school who shared his love of music and Bucket Drumming with our 5th-8th grade Discovery students. Mr. Dougherty, our Music Enrichment teacher, invited Sammy Foster (BucketDrumming.net) all the way from Austin, TX to come talk with our kids about music, share his many talents, and to give them all a hands-on bucket drumming session. Yes, all of ⅚ in the gym at once!!! What a treat for our students  and an experience they won’t soon forget. Thank you, Sammy and Mr. Dougherty!!!

Mrs. Zuniga/Mrs. Bengson’s Math:

Varsity: Our class has just finished practicing expanded form of decimal numbers and fraction form. Our next focus will be comparing and ordering decimals before we take our next quiz. Our students got into groups and created decimal numbers through hearing the number only. (Pictures below) Our goal is to take our next quiz on introduction of decimals by next Friday.

Scholastic: For our second unit, students are learning about estimating decimals and whole numbers and how important it is for mental math. Our focus for this week has been multiplying decimals. Multiplication facts are very important for this unit.

Honors: I recommend that students know perfect squares and perfect cubes up to 12 for squares and 10 for cubes. Another crucial part of Algebra itself is knowing multiplication facts and factors of numbers. I do recommend that if students are having trouble with these, they practice and study each day to know perfect squares and cubes along with multiplication facts. Students are working on order of operations and the importance of completing operations in a specific order to get the correct answers.

Mrs. Nijjar’s Math:

Varsity: In this Palindrome week, we continued learning about decimals – adding and subtracting decimals, comparing decimals, and rounding decimals. For our creative learning day, students played decimal dough with their names by adding and subtracting decimal numbers corresponding to the letters in their name. In addition, students also solved an alligator puzzle by rounding the decimals and coloring the picture. In the coming weeks, students will be learning about multiplying decimals with 2-digit, 3-digit, and 4-digit whole numbers.

Access to Khan Academy: Usernames and passwords for all students in my Varsity group have been created. The students have the details to login in their Binder. I always encourage students to access and work on Khan Academy whenever possible since the assignments(assigned by me) are aligned to the Common Core Math Standards.

Honors: We talked about the Palindrome week, and students were excited about identifying the dates for this week and the coming week. In this week, students learned about solving one-step and two-step equations by matching different pieces of the puzzle. The students also learned about translating the algebraic terms by creating clues to challenge their friends to ‘find their floor’. They used algebraic phrases to write their clues. In the coming weeks, students will be learning about plotting inequalities on the number line and will start preparing for the upcoming Unit test.

Scholastic: As a class, we discussed about the Palindrome week, and the students were excited to know about these magic dates. This week students put their best efforts to take the first Unit test. In addition, we started with the first lesson of the second unit which is about exponents. In the coming weeks, students will be learning more about exponents and the strategies to solve them.

Ms. Rodieck’s Language Arts and Humanities

Would you believe the first trimester is about half over – it is week 7 already.  Students should be finishing up their first independently read book for Trimester One and their first book club book reports are due Monday, September 23.  The book report is a ‘one-pager’ where students can creatively share their book with others.  The second books will be assigned on Monday, September 23 – when the other books are turned in, book report done or not.

Honors class has finished the first part of Music in Humanities and is moving on to the next part – learning about instruments, particularly in an orchestra.  They will be presenting their slide shows about their assigned instrument next week.

Scholastic will also be creating their slide shows and will be sharing them in class later in the week.

Varsity got to do the wall outside our classroom this month.  They wrote poems about our heroes to go along with both the homecoming theme and  poetry unit.

All classes started very basic and simple diagramming this week and we will continue to slowly build on the basics of subject and predicate.  All classes will continue weekly spelling and/or vocabulary.  We should all finish our first novel soon and will have a unit test mid-term at that time.

Language Arts with Mr. Harding

We are learning to be healthy and happy through gratitude.  Each day I write one student’s name on the board and every person in the class has to write one genuinely positive thing about that student.  The students are learning that finding positives in others helps them stay positive about themselves.

We have been doing all of this diagramming for a reason.  It is time to write! In Harding’s ELA classes we will be putting our skills to use and writing with increased clarity thanks to our better understanding of language. We will focus on using our analytic diagramming skills to construct sentences lacking unnecessary and burdensome wordiness [sic].

Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy

Students started this week with creating a one-pager study guide to help prepare for the test. Tuesday, students continued to prepare for their unit test by playing various review games. Students played ZAP! which is a fun and competitive way to test their knowledge all while earning nest points for their team. Afterwards, students logged onto Chromebooks (pictured below) and played an online review game with Quizizz. Students are also now added to our Google Classroom!

Wednesday, students took their first unit test on early humans. This was worth 30 points and is 30% of their grade (see syllabus for grading breakdown). Grading is complete and updated in Aeries.

The rest of the week, all students will begin their next unit on Mesopotamia. They will first watch a brief documentary on the Sumerians as they fill out a See-Think-Wonder worksheet writing down observations about what they see, what they think, and what they wonder about the ancient Sumerians. Friday, students will label and color a map of Mesopotamia to have an understanding of the geography of the region we are studying.

Science with Ms. Diaz:

Greetings scientists! This week was all about Newton’s most famous discoveries (calculus, gravity, laws of motion, reflecting telescope), black holes, and scientists’ theories on what gravity actually “is” vs “what it does.” We also tinkered with devices such as gyroscopes and pendulums. Tests have been graded and will be put into Aeries soon. Last but not least, come one and come all to check out the DCS science blog site at: www.tlcdiscoverychannel.weebly.com. Read all about the Top Ten Most Armored Cars (Kyle Ardenyi), Zest (Tejpreet Banwait) and Black Holes (Mustafa Amiri). Prepare to be SCIENCED!

Awesomely, interesting announcements:

Art with Ms. Losen:

This week in art we finished painting our three individual depictions of “utopia” and planned the layout for wall-display. Some classes planned a specific color gradient before beginning and lined them up that way whereas others grouped the tiles by subject. We also began work on paper laurels for students to wear in the homecoming parade later this month.

Top Nest Earners for Week 5!

Teacher Highlight!

Ms.

Cerezo

This week in Language Arts classes turned in their next writing assignment and each student had a conference to discuss their essays and their writing progress.

Each class also had their first of many debates. We read four short articles and debated them! The students did amazingly with this. Every class had a lot of information to offer! We also played “Musical Chairs Writing” where students wrote to music and switched chairs once the music stopped to continue their neighbors essay.

Bucket Drumming!

This week the students attended an assembly on Bucket Drumming! It was amazing! The students had so much fun listening to the performance and even creating their own beats on their own bucket drums.

Social Studies and Leadership with Ms. Zaca:

Social studies:

Scholastic and Honor students began the week by taking their vocabulary quiz and ended the week taking the quiz on the 12 Roman Tables, Patricians, and Plebians. Varsity students took their vocabulary quiz Thursday.

This week, all students began learning about daily life in Ancient Rome. Did you know that the ancient Romans loved racing mice against each other as a past time? Students were divided up into different groups and read information on one of the five categories of ancient life: food, fun, school, women, and gods. They then went back to their regular groups and became “Teachers”; teaching their regular table members all about their category.

Scholastic and Honor students were also asked to complete the PowerPoint notes on page 16 as homework. Wednesday, they discussed the Punic Wars and how Ancient Rome made sure to wipe out any future reemergence of Carthage by mixing salt into their soil to prevent crops from growing. Talk about taking extreme measures to defeat your enemies!

Campus Beautification September 14th, 2019

Thank you to all those who had students sign up for our first-ever Discovery Campus Beautification! Due to limited resources, we are only accepting 20 students. Those students who were selected, all received letters and were sent home with it. Discovery cannot wait to start this project with the students!

Spanish with Ms. Polo

Test #1 should be returned or coming back by next week depending on the class. We are starting Lectura which is reading in Spanish for all 30 letters. These next few classes they should know how to read A and B aloud and be able to translate it to English. There are 30 vocabulary words they are responsible for in these 2 readings. They are highlighted in class! Ask your child to read it to you, they sound amazing! I’m so proud

Technology with Ms. Ferguson

Technology 5th-8th grade is currently finishing up their presentations on their favorite digital platform.  Once done they will be learning how to conduct Google searches in the most efficient way possible, and have a digital scavenger hunt to show off their new Google searching skills!

Art with Ms. Losen

Millennium High School

THIS WEEK AT MHS – Spanish:

Spanish with Sra. De La Torre

Students in Spanish 1 have learned a lot in the past six weeks.  They learned how to greet people and say goodbye. They are now able to recite the whole Spanish alphabet. They know all 21 Spanish speaking countries and their capitals. They learned colors and animals.  They are able to introduce themselves and others, as well as exchange phone numbers.  They know the days of the week, and can talk about the weather. This week the students worked in groups to create a script in which they had to demonstrate how they are able to use all of the previously mentioned in a conversation.  They are supposed to rehearse the script and present it to the class as a Skit on Monday.  They are being very creative and are doing a great job at collaborating with one another!

Spanish I students collaborate to write their script and practice their skit, which they will be presenting on Monday.

We started Spanish 2 with a review of what was learned during Spanish 1. The students remembered most of the vocabulary. However, they needed reinforcement in grammar.  This week, the students worked in partners to create their own “Telehistoria.” First, they had to write a script in Spanish about a jersey that needs to get autographed by a famous soccer player. They all wrote creative scripts, with very interesting plots. They will be acting and recording these as their “Telehistoria.” They will turn in their videos this Monday.  I can’t wait to watch them!

In Spanish 3, we are currently covering our “Vamos a acampar” unit.  In this unit, the students are learning vocabulary about camping, and outdoor activities.  The students are using preterite tense to talk about what they did during their past trips.  This week the students worked on creating a brochure in Spanish, in which they are supposed to advertise a Spanish speaking country.  They started by doing research, since they have to talk about food, tourist places, and fun activities to do in the country they chose. The students are doing a great job on their brochure and they will be presenting these on Tuesday!

Meet The Coaches!

Hey there Falcons, my name is Nate Shelton and I am one of the assistant coaches for this year’s MHS football team. I am a new teacher here at MHS. I have been having a blast with the boys so far, and I am very excited to see what kind of success we can have this year in football. I found myself at Millennium because I have a desire to see children succeed. I believe that this school and these teams have the right goals when it comes to seeing our kids succeed on and off the field as well as inside or outside the classroom. Despite being new here, I am very excited for the future here at Millennium, one that I see myself being a part of for a very long time. In addition to football, I will be around again in the spring coaching Track and Field. In general, my goals for coaching are always simple and will never change. Develop good young men and women and prepare them to be successful in the future. Regardless of what they decide to do.

Outside of coaching I love all things sports. On any given Sunday you’ll find me cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles, America’s real team. My love for sports, especially football is from deep within. To the point where I can’t ever get enough. I love watching and coaching football and it is an honor to be able to be involved here at Millennium. Fly Falcons Fly Go Birds -Coach Shelton

Outside of being an Eagles fan, Coach Shelton has been a great addition to the Millennium Coaching Staff!! -Miss Balsamo  😉

TK

Wishing all our TK families a great weekend.

We are all excited to start focusing on our letters, numbers and sight words and look forward to sharing our accomplishments this week with some fun projects!

Initial Phase

We are so excited about a new subscription to a magazine through Scholastic called Let’s Find Out! It is a science/social studies magazine just for kindergarten students. There are also math and language arts concepts embedded in each magazine issue. After we use the magazine at school students will bring the magazine home to teach their family everything they have learned! Additionally, our subscription includes an online component. Families can log on using our special classroom password. You can watch videos, listen to songs, play games, and more! Visit: www.scholastic.com/lfo, click on log in, click student, and type in our password: P2KINDER. Have fun exploring and learning!

Phase One:

The students in Phase One continued their Map Skill unit in Social Studies. P3 and P4 did group projects where they had to research a continent or ocean and present it to the class. P5 learned about different communities, like rural, urban and suburban. They discussed the characteristics and differences in each type of community.

Classroom volunteers will start September 16th! The teachers will be contacting you next week with a schedule if you signed up to help out in the classroom. If you would still like to sign up, please make sure that you fill out the volunteer form and get all the appropriate paperwork for Mrs. Kay in the office completed. Remember, you must be cleared with Mrs. Kay to go on field trips too. Thank you to all who have signed up, we truly appreciate all your help!

Mrs. Zuniga/Mrs. Bengson’s Math:

Varsity: Our class has just finished practicing writing decimals in word form and numeric form. Our next focus will be fractions and decimals then comparing and ordering decimals before we take our next quiz. Our goal is to take our next quiz on introduction of decimals by next Friday.

Scholastic: For our second unit, we have begun to look at multiplying whole numbers and will be moving on to multiplying decimals. Students are learning about estimating decimals and whole numbers and how important it is for mental math. The kids have also learned about 6 multiplication properties that will make multiplying much easier and simpler.

Honors:  With our second quiz out of the way, our class is moving through Unit 1 at a steady pace. The students are doing a great job with practicing our topics. I did recommend to students that knowing perfect squares and perfect cubes are very crucial in finding square roots and cube roots. Another crucial part of Algebra itself is knowing multiplication facts and factors of numbers. I do recommend that if students are having trouble with these, they practice and study each day to know perfect squares and cubes along with multiplication facts.

Ms. Rodieck’s Language Arts and Humanities

We are moving right along reading our first book and learning about Poetry.  Varsity is continuing to practice writing summaries using our DARE materials.  Scholastic and Honors wrote their first Expository Essay in class this week, focusing on the introductory paragraph.  We are also continuing to learn the vocabulary needed to discuss Music in Humanities.  Honors and Scholastic will begin identifying subjects and predicates and diagramming those two parts of a sentence.  Varsity will continue to review basic parts of speech.  Soon we will have a Mid-Term/Unit Test when we finish reading our first book.

Language Arts with Mr. Harding

In Harding’s ELA class we are digging into diagramming. Our writing will gain focus and clarity by learning how the parts of a sentence work together to make meaning. This week we’ve also been reviewing and reinforcing concepts from the previous week.

Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy

This week in social studies, our students are continuing to learn about the Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages. They are understanding the development of agriculture and how it changed daily life in the Neolithic Age. Students are also learning about plant and animal domestication during this time period.

Honors students have started creating comic books that will focus on three topics of their choice. They are working in pairs to create the comic books. The comic books will illustrate the changes in the Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages. Once completed, students will participate in a comic book read-around where they will read and review their classmate’s comic books.

Scholastic and Varsity students are finishing up their notes in their interactive notebooks. They will finish up by completing an activity on the diet of early man. This activity will have students create restaurant menus using the types of foods available during the time under study.

There will be a unit test next week on Wednesday, September 11th. This unit test will include map skills and early humans in the Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages. Monday, students will create a one-page study guide. Tuesday, students will participate in numerous review games to prepare for the unit test.

Art with Ms. Losen:

This week in art… we wrapped up realism and learned about contemporary artist Jonathan Saiz, who created a 10,000 piece artwork made from small tiles that represents 10,000 perspectives on “Utopia.” (See below) Students are creating their own Utopia “tiles” to be displayed in the hallways as one giant collective piece of art.

Science with Ms. Dominguez

This week in 7/8 Science, we are exploring the Cell Cycle, and discussing the importance of Interphase, Mitosis, and Cytokinesis. This will prepare students to talk about mutations and the development of cancer cells. Honors and Scholastic will have a Note Check on the google classroom to complete by Friday at 12am. Varsity students will complete their Note Check in class on Thursday at the end of their science class period.

Honors and Scholastic will also have an online quiz due by the end of the weekend on Sunday at 12am. Varsity will take their quiz in class on Monday. We will be playing Jeopardy in all classes on Friday to review for the quiz.

Language Arts with Ms. Greene

This week the students have been practicing writing introductions and they will be moving onto body paragraphs with the next writing assignment. In this writing assignment students are to choose one of three prompts that focus on the book we have been reading in class, Fever 1793. The focus for all classes this week in their writing assignment is how to write a strong thesis statement for their introductions.

In Honors, we have been diving into annotations and close readings in their PSAT weekly packets. In Varsity and Scholastic, we are also talking about close reading and reading comprehension through defining unknown words and asking meaningful and clarifying questions.

Friday we will be starting a weekly fun writing assignment, Free Thought Friday, in which they are given fun questions to think about and will write in their personal journals.

Reminder: Writing Assignment 3 Due 9/11/2019

Math with Mrs. Rapp

In Mrs. Rapp homeroom, we have finished Unit 1 with a class average of 89% and are diving right into Unit 2. This unit will be all about Multiplying and Dividing Whole Numbers and Decimals. This group is off to a wonderful start and I am excited to continue to get to know them and deepen their understanding of mathematics.

In Scholastic/Algebra 1, we have unit tested and are jumping into Unit 2 which is Multi-Step Equations and Inequalities. This is a bright group of students and I am pleased to see their progress as well as see some really step up to the rigor of this class.

In Honors, we have kicked off Unit 2 of Logic and Proof with some in class activities to help us better understand Inductive Reasoning and Conjectures. We did an “I have, Who has” and they were able to complete 32 cards in under 5 minutes.

Language Arts with Mrs. Cerezo

All students continued to read in Fever 1793. We are making great headway in this novel and are using it as our foundation for learning all components of a novel.

Students also received their next take home introduction assignment. This time students will need to choose from three similar topics to create their introduction. We will conference again next week to ensure that we are continuing to improve.

Music Exploration with Mr. Dougherty:

Music Exploration is busy composing music! First, they composed background music to use while they read news headlines. Now they are composing custom ringtones. Bucket drumming is next on the roster, and Music Exploration will be hosting a bucket drumming workshop that will be lead by a Sammy Foster, the owner, and creator of bucketdrumming.net. Social Studies and Leadership with Ms. Zaca:

Social studies:

What are the 12 Roman Tables? When students were asked this question, many answered with “a table!…where the Roman leaders would sit…12 of the Roman gods…where representatives from each district of Rome would sit…”, while some answered “laws of the romans…where they carved their rules on…”.  If you answered similarly to the latter, then you know plenty of Roman history! Students in all three classes (Scholastic, Honors, and Varsity) were introduced to the 12 Roman Tables: set of laws engraved on twelve bronze tablets. In their small table groups, students were asked to analyze the rules set place in Ancient Rome and also compared them to the laws we have in place in our countries. Students learned about the inheritance laws for families, proper etiquette for women during funerals (they weren’t allowed to cry!), and what would happen if you did not show up when you were called to court. Next week, students will take a quiz on the twelve tables and on the Patricians and Plebeians.

Students in Scholastic working together to decipher the Roman laws.

Spanish with Ms. Polo

Spanish test #1 this week and next week depending on the class

Know all letters A-Z and the 32 Spanish vocabulary words and their English translations. Look at names as well, hint hint extra credit 10pts! Moving into A & B read aloud and September Acrostic poem

Music Exploration with Mr. Dougherty

7/8 music exploration is busy composing background music for their news headlines. We are having fun learning a lot by working with GarageBand as a composition tool.

Art with Ms. Losen

Technology with Ms. Ferguson

Technology 5th-8th grade is currently working on Google Slides or Prezi.com presentations that discuss each student’s favorite digital platform.  In this presentation, the students will be talking about their favorite app, website, or video game, describing what exactly it is.  They will also be giving examples of poor netiquette and/or cyberbullying that is found within that app.  Where it is found, and how they could prevent it from happening.

This is the concluding project to our unit on Digital Citizenship, Cyberbullying, and Netiquette.  The students will be presenting these projects to the class through next week.

Our next unit topics are: how to conduct proper internet searches, how to evaluate sites for accuracy and bias, and plagiarism/copyright and fair use.

Physical Education:

This Friday, September 6th, at lunch (11:11) we will be having our annual “Staff vs. DCS (6-8th grade) Students Football Game.”  We will be having a BLAST that day and should be tons of FUN!!! 🙂 The game will be 8 on 8 with Flags.  Sadly, the NFL did not have a grant to apply for again this year, however to kick off the “Football Season” for the NFL, college and our high school football team, we will still have our annual “Football Friday.”

Also, as a friendly reminder, please remind students that they should be applying

“Deodorants/Antiperspirants/Baby Powder or Sanitary Wipes” in the morning before they are coming to school and showering daily; as their bodies have already begun puberty even though there may be no signs of it showing physically! Less is More so if we could tell the Gentlemen & Ladies to “Relax on the AXE” or Body Sprays…Much would be appreciated!!!! LOL :))

THIS WEEK AT MHS – Fines Arts Department:

Band is in full swing as we are approaching our first performance of the year at this Friday’s upcoming football game. Along with performing at our first home game the Marching Band has been putting in a tremendous amount of time and effort preparing for this year’s competition show. The show this year is based on the story of Medusa. The band and colorguard are looking forward to our five competitions this season, in which we will compete against several bands in our division.

Drama class is exploring small scene studies for the past two weeks, preparing for their first big showcase in the classroom.  The students have also begun work on selecting their final performance scenes, getting ready for the Fall drama showcase in November.  Technical construction is mastering the basic skills unit and is now two weeks into the basic skills testing.  Film production has really ramped up, and the students have completed several small projects, gaining a rudimentary foundation of Adobe Premiere.  We also just started the introduction to Photoshop and will be starting our recreation of the original classic film poster for Cassablanca.

In Art 1, we are always  working on both a two-dimensional design project and an art history unit simultaneously. For art history, we have been studying the elements of design so that we can learn to look at art in a more informed manner. Last week we finished our calligraphy projects and next week we’ll be working on observational drawing. Here are some examples of my students calligraphy~Mr. Young

Meet The Coaches!

My name is Sheree Parker and I am the Millennium High School Cross Country Coach. This is my 4th season with the Falcons. I enjoy coaching cross country and track and field because it is not based on just winning but being able to PR (Personal Record) each week, as well as goal setting. I love helping all athletes see improvement from the beginning of the season to the end.  I have helped several athletes get to the section meet in Folsom and this year my goal is to get more to sections and finally to the state meet.  I have a great team that is hard-working, dedicated, and shows effort, which is the recipe for success!  In addition to coaching, I have been teaching at Tracy Learning Center for 6 years now and I coach a youth track and field team called God Speed.

How Can I Be Involved as a Parent in My Child’s School?

We realize all of us are busy and few of us have the ability to stay at home and spend all of our time with our children. Sometimes it is even difficult to schedule chances to see our students in extra things that they do such as sports or music. We understand. There are, however, things you can do to be involved that are important and can be done from home. Here is a helpful list of suggestions.

  • Check grades often. For older students sign into Aeries to check up to the minute grades. Many parents do this once a week.
  • For younger children take the time to read all the information in the weekly folder and send back whatever is needed.
  • Read the weekly newsletter called the Charter Chatter. It is an on-line weekly newsletter. If you have a subscription it will come to your phone’s email each Friday.
  • Email a teacher if you have a question. It is the best way to reach a teacher and to get a quick response.
  • Check back packs, you will find work done that can be praised and you can weed out things that make the backpack heavy but are not needed.
  • Ask your student what they did that excited or challenged them as they arrive at home. Don’t take “nothing” for an answer and in no time you will be hearing things that happened at school.
  • Model learning. Talk about things you have just learned at work or from reading etc.
  • Model reading at home or show your student how you use math for every day things
  • Participate by going to events that include your student: sports, band, music etc.

Upcoming Picture Days

PreK, PCS and DCS – Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019. Flyers coming home week before.

TK

This week in TK we learned all about ourselves and how to treat others.

We began our week by learning about our feelings and how to react to them. We worked on a feelings book that stated when we felt a certain way. Students learned all about using their manners, especially please and thank you. The teachers and friends learned all about each with our All About Me posters we created in class.

Our friends created family trees and had a lot of fun with adding lots of apples. During our centers we focused on fine motor skills, such as cutting, tracing, pencil and glue holding. Look for the awesome work in their green folders today!

We are all excited to start focusing on our letters, numbers and sight words next week!

Initial Phase

What does it mean when a student has to cross out a smiley face? Crossing out a smiley face means that a student needed a reminder of a rule that they already know. Crossing out a smiley face doesn’t mean that the student had a bad day. However, if a student crosses out three smiley faces in a day that will result in a yellow day. Crossing out smiley faces is a way for students to learn how to regulate and control their own behavior. While crossing out a smiley face here and there isn’t a big deal, crossing out one to two smiley faces each day in a week is not good. Look over your student’s behavior log and have a conversation with them about their behavior each week.

Phase One:

Do you ever wonder how you can help your child more at home with what they are learning in class? In Phase One we offer Reading Eggs, Spelling City and IXL Math and all of these programs can be done at home! Most of our Phase One students are familiar with Reading Eggs from using it in Initial Phase. Spelling City is a new program to Phase One this year. It is specific to your child’s spelling words for that week and a fun way to help your child study! IXL is a fun way to practice the skills and concepts being taught in class with their teacher. All of these programs are a great way for students to continue practicing concepts taught in class and to become stronger students. These programs also have apps, check them out!

This week we started our Map Skills unit in Social Studies. The students learned about the compass rose, cardinal directions and started discussing the 7 continents. Ask your student to show you the fun song and dance they learned to remember the 7 continents.

Phase Two:

This week our 3rd/4th graders got to work with clay in art with Mrs. Harvey. This project involves ancient Egyptian history too! Ask your child what they’ve learned about ancient Egypt. We are also learning about plant and animal life cycles in science.

Don’t forget that PCS picture day is on Tuesday! Enjoy your 3 day weekend!

Our Top 5 Nest Point Earners for the week! Way to go Falcons!!!

Mrs. Zuniga/Mrs. Bengson’s Math:

Varsity: Our class is reviewed addition and subtraction of whole numbers this week and took a quiz on Wednesday.

Scholastic: Our class has finished Unit 1 and now begun Unit 2. Unit 2 is focusing on multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals. Math facts are very important in this unit and will help students become fluent in multiplying multi-digit numbers as well as dividing all numbers. I would recommend constant practice at home to master math facts and multiplication/division skills.

Honors: Our class has finished exponents, squares and cubes, and scientific notation. We moved on to comparing rational numbers and will study for our next quiz that will be Wednesday, September 4. Students will receive a study guide Friday to take home and study over the weekend. This will help prepare them for their second quiz.

Mrs. Nijjar’s class

Varsity:

This week started with Interim testing. For two consecutive days, the students put great efforts to take the test and do their best. The rest of the week students will be learning about adding and subtracting decimals. They will also be doing a group activity of choosing items from Starbuck’s menu and calculating the cost of their order.

Scholastic:

In the beginning of the week students put great efforts to take the Interim test and do their best. In this week, students will be learning about estimating the sum and differences of the whole numbers and the decimals. They will practice mental math to estimate the cost of the total purchase done by choosing items from a given menu.

Honors:

Students did Interim testing for two days. For the rest of the week, students will be learning more about solving algebraic expressions by using the properties of real numbers which they learned in the first week of school.

Ms. Rodieck’s Language Arts and Humanities

You know what they say about the best laid plans? This week, we were unable to do the State Interim / Practice Test as the website decided to do some maintenance. So, we will be doing it next week. Students will still need to bring in headphones or earbuds to use during the test. Because of everything going on next week, we will not be doing spelling/vocabulary words. The students will be receiving the directions for the Book Club Book Report – a One-Pager – as many of the students are already done reading their first book!! Below is an example:

Also, D1 is in need of hand sanitizer and Clorox (or Lysol) wipes. Students that donate will get nest points for their nest.

Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy

This week in social studies, students played review games on Monday before taking their first quiz on Tuesday. Students did a great job and grades have been updated in Aeries. This quiz was on map skills, continents, and vocabulary.

Students are now learning about hunter-gatherer societies in the Paleolithic Age and the development of farming in the Neolithic Age. They are studying their new vocabulary words and will be playing various games to continue reviewing these power words throughout the lesson.

Science with Ms. Diaz:

Greetings scientists! Wednesday was an epic day as DCS had its very first Rube Goldberg competition. Every single group did marvelously, showing ingenuity, creativity and a good grasp of the concepts of forces and motion. Projects featured ramps, pulley systems, levers, changes of direction and energy transfer (http://bit.ly/DCSrubegoldberg). The guest judges came from MHS (Ms. Holmes, Ms. Pelaez, Mr. Copass, Mr. Kay), DCS (Ms. Ferguson, Ms. Losen) and PCS (Mrs. Estes). A big thank you to them! Next week’s Charter Chatter will list the students in the winning teams.

Next week we will review for our first science test and students received a study guide today (Friday). The test is on September 5th. The TLC Discovery Channel science blog site will also be up and running soon, with our first articles being posted after next Friday. So keep a keen eye out!

Pentathlon Friday’s: So far we have gone over cells as the basic unit of life and multi- vs unicellular organisms.

Language Arts with Mrs. Cerezo

This week students in all classes completed their first Interim test of the year for Language Arts. We spent Monday and Tuesday working on these tests and discussed them at length on Wednesday to review what type of content the tests consisted of. We will have a total of three interim tests throughout the year so that we can track the progress of each student and ensure that all are properly on track for state testing at the end of the year.

We also continued to read our in class novel and are continuing our work with plot and characterization.

Finally, students conferenced with me to discuss their second introduction paragraph.

Students will have their 4th test of the year this Friday, it will contain a lot of review from weeks 1-3.

Language Arts with Ms. Greene:

We are one month in! In week 4 we started the week with Interim testing on Monday and Tuesday. In all classes we are continuing reading Fever 1793. In Honors we are talking about the irony in the book focused on the Yellow Fever. In Varsity, we are reading and focussing on the plot and the foreshadowing and the main characters. In Scholastic, we have been overviewing irony and the plot of the story as well.

Along with Fever we are also reviewing what we have learned and the test this week will fully be review of this school year thus far.

Reminder: Study all vocab!!

Social Studies with Ms. Zaca:

Scholastic and Honors took their Map of Rome quiz this past Monday. They were asked to locate different locations and to explain why the location of Rome gave it many advantages to thrive and succeed as an empire! Students were also introduced to their new vocabulary and created posters about 1-2 of their words. They were asked to write the definition, use the vocabulary word in a sentence, and to draw a picture that reflected the sentence.

Varsity students took their section 1, Part 1 quiz this week also. They too created posters for their vocabulary words.

A Note from Mrs. King (Math Supervisor)

Welcome to the 2019 – 2020 school year. My name is Leslie King and I am the Math Supervisor for DCS and MHS.

This is an exciting year for math in both schools. We are rolling out all-new math curriculums. It is our goal to have a consistent curriculum in all classes with the same titles. The geometry taught at DCS is the same geometry taught at MHS. Our goal is to be guaranteed that any student who completes and passes a class with 78% will be ready to take on the challenges of the next level.

In the past, classes have not completed curriculum because there was too much time spent remediating what should have been learned the year before. This was true not just for Millennium, but Discovery as well. If a student does not have the foundations needed to build a solid math career, then they will fail. We are hoping to correct that starting this year.

At DCS we have the multi-age classroom. This allows a student to see an entire year’s worth of a course and maybe not master everything. No worries, they always have the second year. Parents should not expect every child to move to the next level of math every year. They will move when they have mastered what they need to be successful at the next level.

At both DCS and MHS, we are requiring all students to have a math binder. This holds both the teachers and the students accountable for work before and after it is graded and returned. At DCS we have a grade graph as the first page of the binder. All scored work for a unit will be placed on the graph. This is an up to date visual of how the student is doing. The “grade” lines and the passing line are drawn on the graph to illustrate to students and parents how the student is doing. There will be periodic binder checks to make sure students are keeping their notes and work as required.

At the end of each unit, the teacher will be collecting the students’ grade graphs, notes, and unit test. These will be kept in a folder for each student. When the time comes for the Final, the notes and tests will be returned to the students to use as study guides for the final exam. All this in hopes to make them more successful!

I am looking forward to a very productive year. I feel we have the staff to accomplish this task. If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at lking@tracylc.net. I am not on campus full time, but I will get back to you as soon as possible if I receive and correspondence.

Thank you. Have a wonderful year!

Music Exploration with Mr. Dougherty

7/8 music exploration is busy composing background music for their news headlines. We are having fun learning a lot by working with GarageBand as a composition tool.

Art with Ms. Losen

This week in Art… 7th & 8th worked to create photo-realistic drawings while 5th & 6th blended realism with fantasy. All students practiced their technique and received approval before moving on to poster-sized projects on a subject of their choosing.

Millennium High School

Economics:

The start to the year in economics has been great. We have begun with an introductory unit on economy terms, learning to graph the production possibilities frontier, economic systems that exist across the world and the concept of scarcity of resources. The students have done well on their first few quizzes on this material. We will soon be ready for our first unit test of the year which will be a challenge as it encompasses all of the topics previously listed and more. Students are learning to relate and apply these concepts to the “real world” and each week they are writing a synopsis of a current news article that pertains to these issues we are learning in class. The pictures included depict some of the work that has been done in class over the first week. Students had to visually represent the concept of scarcity in a drawing, they also had to create a diagram that would outline how the households and firms are linked by product and resource markets. Another photo shows the students working on an assignment on google classroom using the chrome books in class. I am excited to see the results of the first assessment!

-Mr. Saldate

Government:

Students work in partnerships to peer edit their partners’ paper on James Madison’s Federalist #10. As well, students read current events in the United States today, in order to connect it the needs of the Framers of the US Constitution. Discussions in the classroom revolve around the need for separation of powers, and how Montesquieu’s influence can be seen in our framework of our government today.

-Mr. Hunt

United States History:

We have han an incredible start to this years US History class. We have spent the first 4 weeks learning about the various systems that we will be using for the rest of the year. For example, every student has created a Quizlet account and have learned how to create their own study sets. The students have found this tool to be extremely successful and that was reflective on the first unit test. We have just finished up the first 5 presidents of our country and are starting a project on that topic which will be due next week. This is the first major project of the classroom. Overall, I am very pleased with the participation and the effort of the students.

-Mr. Singh

World History:

Students work in small groups to trace the influence of the Greeks and the Persians to modern America and Western Europe. Students studied the development of philosophy in Athens, from Socrates to Aristotle. Using Academic Content Vocabulary Graphic Organizers, students created sentences about Greek Civilization using words like constitute, contemporary, and emerging.

-Mr. Hunt

Geography:

Over the last few weeks we have been exploring the basics of World Geography and laying the

foundation for learning Geography in our classroom. We just finished our unit one test. This week we are exploring climate change and looking at the effects of human actions on the world’s climate. Next week will be starting our unit one project of creating a detailed world map. The students will work in groups in each classroom to create one section of the world map. The students will compete against other periods to have the best section of the map that will then be constructed and hung in our classroom.

-Mr. Hall
