TLC Charter Chatter
A Message from Virginia
Kay Fagundes, Assistant to the Executive Director
My name is Kay Fagundes and I have had the pleasure of taking care of all of your kids’ “office needs” for the past 14 years. A little background about myself, I retired after working 20 years at Kaiser as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in the field of orthopedics. My husband and I have 5 children together and 3 wonderful granddaughters.
Here at TLC, I am constantly changing my cap. The students come to see me when they are ill, injured or simply just need someone to talk to. Yes, it’s true, I also pull a lot of teeth each year. In addition, I assist Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Prescott and Mr. Saldate with our “SOAR” Discipline system. I also communicate with high school students and their parents who are at risk of failing classes due to repetitive tardies to class. I approve and maintain a list of all of our wonderful parent volunteers. I set up our hearing van visits and our picture days each year. I also work closely with Mr. Hepner on all of our Emergency Drills. In addition, I maintain Mrs. Stewart’s calendar and our conference room calendar so if you need to set up a meeting, please let me know.
My phone number is (209) 290-0511 and my email address is kfagundes@tracylc.net. Please contact me with any questions, concerns or absences for your students. If you need help with anything at all please don’t hesitate to ask. This year is going great and I expect it to be a wonderful and exciting year! I absolutely love being part of your children’s lives.
Next School Holiday
Winter Break – Dec. 23, 2019 through Jan. 5, 2020 All students return to school on Monday, Jan. 6, 2020
Personal Days for Next School Year 2019/2020
VERY IMPORTANT CHANGE for our upcoming 2019/2020 school year Beginning August 5, 2019, we are reducing personal/family days for students from 10 days down to 7 days. Allowing 7 days is still much higher than what the district schools allow and we feel 7 days is more beneficial for the school and for each students’ education.
Lunch Menu Week of Dec. 9, 2019 – Dec. 16, 2019
Mon – Pizza
Tues – Chili or Cheese Nachos
Wed – Grilled Cheese
Thurs – Meatball Sub
Fri – Beef Hot Dog
Sick Students
Just a reminder: Please keep your child home if he or she is sick or has a fever. We had many sick children last week and several were given tylenol prior to coming to school in the morning. These illnesses/viruses are very contagious and we are trying to stop them from spreading. Children must be 24 hours free of symptoms and fevers before returning to school.
Don’t forget to click the STAR after scanning and enter your student’s classroom number for credit.

TLC Preschool: Healthy Habits
Our preschool program is like no other! We have an amazing kitchen staff whom prepare warm, healthy meals daily, at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE to our families! Our students receive a freshly prepared breakfast, lunch and snack daily! Our parents, love the fact that their child is gaining exposure to a variety of foods that normally he/she would not try at home. Many of our families have expressed that their child now eats many different foods because of our well developed breakfast and lunch program.
In addition to building healthy habits, our teaching staff is actively engaged with students during meal time. The teachers work on important skills such as manners, language development, hygiene, and fine motor skills such as scooping and pouring with all of the children. Who knew so many important skills could be practiced during meal time!
Initial Phase
We hope everyone was able to fully enjoy their time off! It’s so nice to be back! And what fun to start to our week with the music performance on Monday! P2 has such wonderful singing voices! We also had a special visit from our classroom elf, Peppermint! On Thursday, Peppermint brought the Grinch to our classroom so that P2 students can teach him how to be kind and make his heart grow!
In science, we learned all about how animals adapt to the changing winter environment. Students learned about what animals hibernate and how blubber helps keep animals warm during the cold, winter weather.
Phase One:
We hope you all had a relaxing break! The students came back with renewed energy and we kicked that off with our wonderful Christmas music program on Monday evening. The students and Mr. Martin, did a fantastic job! The teachers were highly impressed with how well they performed. We love seeing all the students dressed up in their fancy clothes every year for this special performance.
The Phase One rooms were all welcomed back by their very own scout elf from the North Pole! These elves have been up to no good, causing mischief and making messes. The students are so excited to see where they are hiding and what they have done every morning. For writer’s workshop the students learned how to write friendly letters. We will eventually write one to send to Santa Claus!
Phase Two:
Wasn’t that an amazing Winter concert on Monday?! We are so proud of our students and they enjoyed performing for everyone. Bravo to Mr. Martin and the elective/PE team for putting the program together.
This week our phase 2 students learned about the 3 branches of our government. This will lead into a fun “simulation” project that will be coming soon in our classrooms. Please remember during these cold and rainy days to make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather! Jackets and sweatshirts should be labeled…our lost and found gets filled up quickly!
Check out our Chinese dragons that were created in art!

We worked on long division with 2 digit divisors and practiced estimating our answers before solving. Next Wednesday will be our first quiz for division with 2 digit divisors.
Scholastic: Students finished Unit 3 and were recapping it this week to remind ourselves about what we learned. Students began to look at integers this week and absolute value.
Honors: Students have finished Unit 2 and are beginning to look at equations for Unit 3 this week. We started with one step equations and will move onto rational and two step equations.
Mrs. Nijjar’s Math:
Varsity: We spent this week reviewing Unit-2 and preparing for Unit-2 test. Students will be taking the Unit-2 test next week, and later in the week will start with the unit for decimals.
Scholastic: Students reviewed the concepts of PEMDAS and algebraic equations. This week, students learned about forming equations using variables for given word problems. In the coming weeks, students will be learning about arithmetic sequences and forming function tables using the given data.
Honors: Students learned to analyze graph by finding the domain, range, and doing the Vertical line test. In addition, students had fun graphing scenarios and presenting it to the class. In the coming weeks, students will be learning about graphing linear equations.
Ms. Rodieck’s Language Arts and Humanities
Welcome back from Thanksgiving Break. We are continuing to read Fever 1793 and have moved into the part of the book where Matilda is maturing because of the circumstances that have reshaped her life. Students wrote an essay comparing themselves to Matilda reflecting back on the character traits they gave themselves in their Personal Awareness SWO. The final draft of the essay is due Monday typed and printed. If they were unable to type it, they can submit a final draft written neatly in ink. For the next two weeks, our writing assignment will be more fun and creative.
In Humanities, we are trying to finish up the Art History part and will be doing Elements of Art stations next. If your son or daughter has missed part of the Art history lessons (or you are interested) I posted the website we used on both my Google classroom and website at rodieckla.weeble.com.
The next Book Club Book Reports will be due the Monday we come back from Winter Break. The students are to create a brochure about their book. The template is available on my Google Classroom along with the rubric used to grade it.
Language Arts with Mr. Harding
We are thankful for the last week off, and now we have a three-week push to maximize our learning. Although we will not finish our novel, Fever, 1793, before winter’s first frost, we are learning and reviewing reading strategies and concepts to help our learners make connections and meaning out of what they read. As we become more familiar with the reading stations or strategies, the novels become more vibrant and real for students.
After three weeks without computer access, I have decided to set aside the Ebola essays we had previously been working on. When topics and assignments go cold, they do not spark imagination and interest in them fizzles. We’ll start a new essay assignment when I’m sure the schedule will allow a project’s completion.
Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy
This week, students learned about the origins and development of Judaism. We started the unit on ancient Israelites with a KWL (what students already know, what students wonder, and what they’ve learned) chart and students were surprised with how much they already knew! Students then labeled and colored a map of ancient Israel to become familiar with the geography of the region. Please see pictures below of students working on these maps:
After we learned about the geography of ancient Israel and defined key terms, students focused on identifying important Jewish leaders (Moses, Abraham, David, and Solomon). They identified their actions and contributions to Judaism. We ended the week by creating ancient scrolls about these figures. Students specialized in one figure, created their scroll, and then formed new groups to teach their classmates about the other Jewish leaders. Students then taped their scrolls together to form one ancient scroll about the four key leaders in the development of Judaism.
Next week we’ll be learning about the central teachings of Judaism and how they’ve survived to modern day.

Science with Ms. Diaz:
Greetings scientists! This week, our navigators learned about how to track the sun and it’s movement. They learned about how to estimate the time of day based on shadows and their orientation and how long/short they are. Since we’ve been stuck indoors all week, we improvised and use flashlights as our “sun” to cast shadows of wooden sticks. The picture below shows two students hard at work, outlining shadows on their data sheet. Lastly, students learned how to use a compass, reading both directions and coordinates.
Next week we will learn about the moon and its phases.
Last but not least, come one and come all to check out the DCS science blog site at: www.tlcdiscoverychannel.weebly.com. Science with Ms. Dominguez:
Over the last couple of weeks, 7-8 Science has taken a detour from the Academic Pentathlon curriculum to take a deeper look at the subject of genetics. When I first introduced the Academic Pentathlon material for the year, I decided to make a family tree. The family tree showed three generations of one family. The students did not know who the people were featured in the family tree, and I left it to them to figure out why some of the names were highlighted and others were not. Eventually, a student in each of the classes guessed that maybe the people with their names highlighted might have died from some kind of disease. The more accurate answer was that those individuals with their names highlighted were diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives with most of them succumbing to the disease. Through the highlighted names, the students were able to see how the disease made its way through the family tree, making an appearance in each generation of the family. At the end of our class discussion on the family tree, I revealed to the students that this was a real family, and it was, in fact, my own family that I had based the family tree on starting with my great grandmother. As we continue to focus on Academic Pentathlon, this concept of genetics as a major risk factor for cancer is key for students to understand, and in order to gain a greater understanding of genetics outside of the biology of cancer, we carried out several types of activities.
Honors, Scholastic and Varsity all got to practice the use of models to demonstrate how traits are determined by genes, and how the genes of two parent organisms will influence the traits that their offspring will inherit. All three levels of 7-8 were introduced to Punnett Squares through a great activity called SpongeBob Genetics, where the students are able to analyze traits of familiar characters by using the provided descriptions in world problems – the phenotype of the character – to assign genotypes for each trait. Once they had established the genotypes for the characters in the word problems, they were able to label Punnett Squares to see how the genes of each parent would impact the appearance of their children. The use of Punnett Squares to solve word problems was not an easy feat for any of the classes, and we carried out several different activities in addition to the SpongeBob Genetics exercise to firmly establish how to correctly use these models.
Finally, in the week leading up to Thanksgiving break, we started our first major project for Trimester 2. Students worked in teams to research two different types of pure dog breeds using the AKC website. They collected information regarding each of the breeds’ physical characteristics, history of use or purpose, temperament, and any common medical issues associated with the breed. All of this research was carried out before we went to break. Now that we are back from break, students are using the information they collected from the AKC website to hypothesize what kind of offspring would be created if the two pure dog breeds were mixed. Some are taking an approach similar to that of Gregor Mendel when he first began researching genetics through the selective breeding of pea plants, and believe the hypothetical offspring of their two dog breeds will be a perfect combination of the two dogs with characteristics like height and weight being an average of the two breeds’. Some have decided to assign dominant and recessive traits to each of the breeds and use their understanding of Punnett Squares to determine which traits will be expressed in the offspring. Their final task will be to create a commercial to advertise their exciting new mixed breed offspring.
Social Studies with Ms. Zaca:
Students began the month of November finishing their unit on Islam. Students had the choice of either taking the Unit Final or creating a crash course video on all of Islam. Check some of their videos out below! Students demonstrated their knowledge of Islam and the Islamic Empire in these videos, and they could not have done a better job.

After the unit on Islam, students began learning about the history of the three West African Empires: Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. with each empire, students read about their great leaders, how the salt and gold trade benefitted their people, the pilgrimage of Mansa Musa and how his actions led to inflation, and the impact Islam had on the people. Students finished up the unit right before Thanksgiving break and once again had the option of either taking the unit test or making a rap song about West Africa. Check out the video below of a group that finished their video early!

Meet The Coaches!
Hello My name is Denise Hayes (Coach Dee) and I am the MHS Cheerleading Coach. This is my 6th year at Millennium. I cheered third grade through college and began coaching right out of high school. Many of my athletes have no cheer experience and by the end of the season they are able to do several different jumps, kicks, learn choreography at an accelerated rate and make up choreography. But the best part is when the team learns a new stunt and perfects it.
My goal for the future is to compete and participate in more community events

Did you know that we’re having a major gaming event in Tracy on New Years Eve for youth? That’s right, on New Years Eve, we’re inviting everyone, ages 14 to 20, to come to WorkVine209 for a night of casual gaming on a variety of systems as well as ping pong and air hockey.
This is a great way to get out, hang with friends, and demonstrate your skills at all of the best games of 2019.
This is a supervised event with adult volunteers. We want everyone to have fun and stay safe at the same time. Contact Uneed2 for more information: info@uneed2.org
