Next School Holiday
WInter Break – Dec. 23, 2019 through Jan. 5, 2020 All students return to school on Monday, Jan. 6, 2020
Personal Days for Next School Year 2019/2020
VERY IMPORTANT CHANGE for our upcoming 2019/2020 school year Beginning August 5, 2019, we are reducing personal/family days for students from 10 days down to 7 days. Allowing 7 days is still much higher than what the district schools allow and we feel 7 days is more beneficial for the school and for each students’ education.
It’s that time again. THE 14TH ANNUAL TRACY LEARNING CENTER CRAB FEED – FEBRUARY 1, 2020
Tickets to the February 1, 2020 Tracy Learning Center Crab Feed are on sale now!
Tickets are $55.00 per person, or a table of eight is $440.00. Table reservations include pre-assigned seating and your name or company name prominently displayed on your table.
The doors of the Portuguese Hall will open at 6:00 p.m. for a no-host cocktail hour. Your delicious crab dinner served with salad, pasta and bread will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Through so much generosity we have amazing raffle baskets and silent auction items. Then put on your dancing shoes and hit the dance floor until 12:00 a.m.
Please let me know if you can kindly donate to our DESSERT AUCTION.
Donna Baker (209) 321-9157 via text or donna@donnabaker.com
Please let me know if you would like to volunteer for this awesome event. We are also looking for a new committee chair that would like to shadow Tom and Donna through all aspects of this community building event. Their daughter Ally will be graduating this year whereby they will kindly step down.

TLC Preschool: Did you know?
Did you know our preschool teachers work hard each week creating lessons that are play based? The preschool teachers focus on a letter, number, color and shape each week. They use these focus concepts to create fun, interactive lessons that keep students engaged while having fun learning. This week the students have been focusing on the letter E as in elf, the number 10, the color brown, and the shape triangle. Students have created group posters with the letter E, sorted the letter E by capital and lowercase, and worked on creating lists of things that start with the E sound, made christmas decorations with groups of 10, and decorated a triangle shaped Christmas tree! Phew!. Who knew so much learning could be masqueraded into fun activities. Thank you teachers!
Initial Phase
P2 began studying community helpers and map skills in preparation of our North Pole project. Students should bring their assigned building on Wednesday as we will set up our North Pole Wednesday morning and leave it up to use for classroom activities through Thursday.
Next week, we will do our weekly tests on Thursday because the teachers have many fun activities planned for Friday- including building mini gingerbread houses!
Don’t forget to change out your students extra clothes in their backpack to winter clothes.
Phase One:
Phase 1 had an exciting week!! We finished up our letter writing unit and are getting ready for procedural writing. In Social Studies we learned about Hanukkah from Mrs. Thompson. We did some fun holiday themed activities in LA and Math. Phase 1 also recognized SWO earners, and Golden Shoe earners. We have a great bunch of respectful students!! Our week ended with a Polar Express Party complete with hot chocolate and treats! Thank you for all your good wishes and gifts. Have a safe and wonderful Winter Break!!
Phase Two:
This week our phase 2 classes enjoyed their nacho party in Spanish with Senora Wharton! This is a reward that classes earn by participating in class, working on their skills in class and being productive workers. Everyone enjoyed Senora Wharton’s famous salsa and even got to do the Macarena! Students were also presented with outstanding student awards for Spanish.
In social studies our classes are learning about our government and how to be a good citizen. We discussed what it means to be a good citizen, both in the classroom and in our community. Speaking of good citizens…thank you to everyone who donated items for Brighter Christmas and our toy drive for the children’s hospital. We are so appreciative and proud of our students for reaching out to help others.

Mrs. Zuniga/Mrs. Bengson’s Math:
Varsity: Our class is finishing Unit 2, so we will be starting Unit 3 when we get back from break. Students took the unit test on Friday and will know their grades when we get back. We look forward to beginning the introduction of fractions.
Scholastic: Our class has looked at functions and graphs for the first time this week and students did very well. Now we have started adding integers, which students played a game of integer war this week.
Honors: Our class began looking at multi-step equations with variables on one and both sides of an equation. Students are doing well with this concept. We will end the week with this concept, but add in a little extra to the equations before break. After break we will review equations again before taking on our second quiz for the unit.
Mrs. Nijjar’s Math:
Varsity: We spent this week learning about decimal multiplication and division. In the week after Winter Break, students will be reviewing these concepts and will take the Unit Test for the same.
Scholastic: Students completed the third unit and took the Unit Test. In addition to this, students spent a day reviewing decimal addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division concepts.
Honors: Students learned to write equations as functions and plot on a graph. Students also explored the website “Desmos” to plot graphs of complex equations. In the coming weeks, students will be learning about forming arithmetic sequences and plotting the same on the graph.
Ms. Rodieck’s Language Arts and Humanities:
This week we had the final for Art History in Humanities. When we come back in January, we will start looking at art and listening to music related to the Pentathlon topic of Health and Wellness.
We will also continue to read Fever 1793 and will finish it up with a cooperative collaboration project – creating a newspaper from the time period. This week we worked on using dialogue in a creative writing project using Gingerbreads. The students do have a book club book brochure do the day we come back. The assignment is on my Google Classroom and can be turned in that way or printed out. I will be available to answer questions about the project during the break. Have a Restful WinterBreak and I will see you in 2020.
Language Arts with Mr. Harding:
We are working on symbolic text free compositions in Language Arts. The students are learning how to use foreground, midground, and background to create movement and show relationships between ideas to create a theme. We appreciate the artistically inclined, but emphasize the use of symbols and creating a relationship between them on the page. Students who originally tried to draw their dog or best friend and failed learned to draw more common things that symbolize what the relationship means to them. Instead, they draw the leash and collar. They draw the monkey bars that they used to climb with their best friend every day in primary school.
Our novel has piqued interest, and I am confident that even winter break will not abate our fervor for Fever, 1793. We will continue with this novel and associated projects in January. We will pick up the pace, and finish within the first few weeks in January. I am encouraged by the enthusiasm the learners bring to the class every day. We’ll start 2020 in full stride. Happy Holidays.
Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy:
For the final week of 2019, our Falcon scholars are wrapping up their unit on Ancient Israel. They finished a group project where each person had to write and draw about a key event in the development of Judaism. We put the key events together and placed a few fantastic timelines on our wall for the class to see! See pictures below of a couple timelines hanging on our wall.
To end the unit, and the week, students had the option to take a traditional unit test or create a project to show what they have learned. Students were able to make posters, comic strips, and more to show their understanding of the unit. They worked with partners, but each person turned in their own individual project. Please see pictures below of students working on their posters!
Students also turned in all their work from the unit on Thursday. When we return, students will begin a new unit on Ancient Greece! Enjoy the break!
Science with Ms. Diaz:
Greetings scientists! This week, we finished our solar system project so once we come back from break, we can decorate the classroom with our artwork. It’ll truly be an “out of this world” sight to behold. After break we will model the earth rotating from day to night and also learn about the phases of the moon, keeping track of the moon in real time with moon diaries.
Last but not least, come one and come all to check out the DCS science blog site at: www.tlcdiscoverychannel.weebly.com. I have no new entries this week but check out our posted articles and prepare to be SCIENCED!

Language Arts with Mrs. Cerezo
This month has been filled with many activities in Language Arts! We are still working on finishing Frankenstein, though the Varsity class finished this week! All classes will get their Frankenstein projects during week 21 and 22.
Students are continuing to practice their writing skills through take home essays and in class timed writes. This week students learned how to create a conclusion paragraph and practiced writing one in class.
We have also completed our second round of Book Club Books (these are books that students choose to read on their own and then complete a project for). For this round we created a One-Pager that showcased the students’ understanding of their novel. They had to analyze the characters growth, the plot, and themes of the story they read. Pictured below are some of the most unique examples of the One-Pagers.
All classes have also continued their work with Diagramming. We have been practicing daily and last week we played a round of Diagram Gold. Each student had a team and had to travel to nine holes to solve a diagramming equation. Their score reflected the number of errors they and their team made per sentence. It was a lot of fun! Honors class will soon be moving on to sentences with adverb clauses.
We will also begin our 2nd Trimester SWO once we get back from Winter Break. This is a very involved and detailed research essay. There are many components to this research essays and we will begin all of the work in class and have roughly two work days (in class) a week. Students must complete and turn in all components on time to move on to the next element of the project.
Finally, just a reminder that while Varsity classes do not have official homework in the form of a worksheet or problem set, but they still must be studying and reviewing the material learned in class in order to be successful. Varsity classes still have tests and assignments in class and if they are not ready or not completed with an assignment by the due date they should take it upon themselves to complete the assignment at home to ensure that it is submitted on time.
Language Arts with Ms. Greene:
It is our final week before Winter Break! Recently, we have been reading Frankenstein and a rigorous pace. Honors and Scholastic are about half way through the book, while Varsity is reading a graphic novel version and they will be finishing the book this week!
At the start of the year we broke down the 5 paragraph essay and have taught the students introductions, body paragraphs, and now we will be teaching conclusions. Students are very excited to be able to write a complete essay, rather than an incomplete paper. In all classes their writing has dramatically gotten better because of the focus on each part of an essay.
When we return we will complete Frankenstein in Honors and Scholastic, as well as put an emphasis on the Pentathlon topics.
