Allowing 7 days is still much higher than what the district schools allow and we feel 7 days is more beneficial for the school and for each students’ education.

TLC Preschool: Art Show and Silent Auction was a HUGE SUCCESS!

Thank you to all of our families for supporting our Art show! We received so much positive feedback! It makes us so happy to know that you are happy! Just in case you missed the show, we have included a video below.

Initial Phase

Monday, March 2nd will be pajama day in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America Day! Teachers have many fun activities planned for this day! Please keep in mind: wear weather appropriate pajamas, wear tennis shoes (no slippers), shorts/leggings underneath nightgowns, no pillows/blankets.

We worked really hard this month earning hearts in our productive worker thermometer; so we celebrated in the best way possible! On Thursday, we made a really fun art project, played with play doh, and enjoyed the wonderful weather by playing with a giant parachute! Check out our instagram for some pictures of all the fun. Here is what we were hearing the students say:

“This is the best day ever!” – Penelope

“This project is SO MUCH FUN!” – Emma

“I wish we could do this every day!” – Xavier

This week in TK, we learned all about Habitats.

First, we learned all about the Arctic Habitat. Some of the animals that live there are polar bears, seals and arctic foxes. The weather can get as low as –50. Brrr!

. Next we learned about the Rainforest Habitat. There are four levels in this habitat! Some of the animals that live here are birds, snakes, monkeys and sloths.

Lastly, we learned about the Ocean Habitat! The kids really enjoyed learning about all the animals that live here. Some are octopus, squid and even plants like seaweed.

Please remember the Habitat projects are due February 24th!!

Phase One:

Congratulations to all our SWO earners this week. We love to celebrate their success!

We enjoyed the warmer weather this week. Feels like spring is coming! With spring comes new life. In Science we talked about the life cycles of different animals and bugs. Some go through a complete metamorphosis! The students enjoyed learning new facts and all about the different stages of life. They even got to make some fun crafts to help remember the life cycles.

In Writer’s Workshop, the students are continuing to work on personal narratives. They are working hard and are producing wonderful stories. We will continue with narratives and also explore some spring themed writing.

Thank you for returning the conference sign-ups. Please look for your confirmation slips to come home in folders. Remember Conferences will be Tuesday 3/10, Wednesday 3/11, and Thursday 3/12.

This Monday, March 2nd, we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss Day! Students will be allowed to wear their pajamas that day. Please no stuffed animals, toys, or slippers. Have a great weekend!

Phase Two:

This week our phase 2 students were hard at work on their Famous Americans biography project. They are researching, writing, and creating a bobblehead of their chosen American. We are looking forward to seeing the final results!

Our 4th grade leadership students focused on the theme of “kindness” for the month of February. In addition to giving all the teachers special, thoughtful gifts during Valentine’s week, they created a kindness graffiti wall for our hallway. Our PCS students were able to write down ways they show kindness to each other. We love all the ideas they came up with!

Next week our 3rd and 4th graders will take the Smarter Balanced Interim Math Assessment. This is NOT the same as the end of the year state test. This is a test that allows us to assess students on what they have learned so far in math. The scores are not published or released but it is a great way for students to get familiar with the upcoming Smarter Balanced state tests in May!

Mrs. Zuniga’s Math:

*Note for all classes: Trifold boards for the SWO project need to be brought to class next week. Students will have time in class to work on them, but may also work on them at home.

All classes took their finals this week. We will be continuing the units we were on heading into the last week of the trimester. Do not forget parent conferences will be on March 9 for me.

Mrs. Nijjar’s Math:

Varsity: This week students reviewed Unit-1, 2, and 3 concepts and took the trimester-2 finals. Students are also in the last phase of completing their Life Long Learner SWO project. In the coming weeks, students will be learning about plotting fractions on the number line and comparing them.

Scholastic: Students put their best efforts to take the trimester-2 finals. In the coming weeks, students will be reviewing the GCF and LCM concepts and will dive into learning about fractions.

Honors: Students took the trimester-2 finals and started with the new unit Students are also in the last phase of completing their Life Long Learner SWO project. In the coming weeks, students will be learning more about the system of equations and the strategies to solve them graphically and algebraically.

All my students are required to get the Tri-folds of 48inches x 36inches size and turn it in by Monday (3/2/2020). We will be working on these tri-folds for the next two weeks.

Ms. Rodieck’s Language Arts and Humanities:

Trimester 2 is about over and we have taken our final. Next week, we will go over it in class. We will also continue reading Frankenstein and getting into the topic of nature versus nurture when we read the Monster’s side of the story. We will quickly review the different text structures and then will begin a research project on the Health and Wellness of our planet – a big political issue this year. We have been reading different articles about this topic and now the students can research a more specific area of interest.

I look forward to meeting with each of my homeroom students and their parents during their appointed conference time. The students will be running their own conference this time around.

Language Arts with Mr. Harding:

We have hit our stride in ELA, and we are making amazing progress every day. Please make sure you have a book to read in your bookbag every morning. We now begin class with a five minute warm up and about fifteen minutes of silent sustained reading. We’re sharing what we read and why we like the book we selected for ourselves. I can’t believe how many Stephen King books are out there in young hands. Please help your young learner have a book they enjoy in class every day. The best teacher talking about reading cannot replace 15 minutes of actual reading.

We’re practicing our test-taking strategies, and learning how to annotate effectively. As we practice, the empirical evidence is undeniable: writing what you think while you read will help you retain the information much better than trying to memorize everything. Hopefully, everyone will buy-in and take the few moments needed to ensure success.

Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy:

Science with Ms. Diaz:

Greetings scientists! This week, we successfully identified what step in the water cycle a specific scenario showed. Do you want to know what happens when the liquid in a test tube in a warm lab decreases over time? How about when clouds are formed when a warm and cold front meet each other? Ask us, we dare you, because we are confident we can explain these processes. Due to our expertise, we all earned a party on Friday! We also began our investigation “Water Cycle in a Bottle.” We are investigating what happens when you put a water bottle filled with blue-colored water out in the sun. Next week, we begin learning about the weather and will investigate its properties.

Last but not least, come one and come all to check out the DCS science blog site at: www.tlcdiscoverychannel.weebly.com. Read all about The Mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle (Helen Chavez) and What Came First, the Chicken or the Egg— How the First Chicken was Born? (Alessandra Garcia). Prepare to be SCIENCED!

Language Arts with Mrs. Cerezo:

The second trimester is wrapping up and has been incredibly busy. The students in all classes have been busily working on their SWO projects. For this students needed to research, write about, and provide a speech on their given health and wellness topic. Speeches were given this week and have been phenomenal! Everyone took their speeches and their topics very seriously and were professional and focused! (Pictured below: Student in the Honors class giving their speech)

Moving into trimester three the students will get new vocabulary words. They will continue to be tested on these words and any other relevant material on Fridays. We will move back to getting more regular essays and will continue to study humanities. This final trimester we will continue to read Flowers for Algernon and then will move into our final book- Othello.

The third and final trimester is all about the students demonstrating what they have learned so far throughout the year. As such, they can expect many projects, presentations, and debates within which they will show their language, analytic, and comprehension abilities. We will also continue to prepare for the annual state test!

Parent Teacher Conferences are the week of March 9th. Please be sure that you have signed and returned your students conference form and have noted your time.

Language Arts with Ms. Greene:

We have finally finished SWO Final Drafts and speeches this week in all classes! Students will be continuing to read Flowers for Algernon. In Honors, we are about half way through the book and the students are loving reading about Charlie’s journey. Scholastic is very close behind in the book, and the students are comprehending the story along with gathering his memories and dreams as part of Charlie’s growth after the surgery. Varsity is loving this story much more than the other 2 books that we have read this year, the students are highly interested in his journey and feel that he is a very relatable character.

Coming soon we have conferences the week of 3/9, Honors students will be taking the PSAT 3/17 and all classes will be taking the 3rd round of the Interim testing the week of 3/24.

This Week in MHS Math….

For the past 2 weeks, the entire math department has been doing Interim Testing to give students a glimpse at what is coming for State Testing in April. Although, only the Juniors take the test in April, we tested Freshmen-Sophomores these two weeks. It is really good practice as some of getting used to the test is getting used to taking it on the computer. We have been stressing the importance of state testing and students are feeling the importance the more that we talk about it.

All classes resume back to normal next week!

Every student will be receiving a purple form in the next week or so. This is a form they will fill out that pertains to their current class grade, what math classes they have taken already and Davis Test scores. Students should fill this out, get their teacher to initial it and bring it to their meetings with Mrs. Stewar next month as they begin scheduling.

TLC Preschool: Art Show and Silent Auction!

TLC preschool will have its annual art show on February 21, 2020 6:30-8:00. More details to come home soon!

Our Art show is almost here! Students are still working hard to get their murals ready! This week we’ve been practicing tints and tone by adding black and white into primary colors! We hope you can come see our works of art!

Initial Phase

Did you know that every day the teachers take at least ten minutes to read a book to the entire class? Additionally, our school principal, Mrs. Stewart comes in to read to our class every other Friday. We have found that students can learn so much from listening to an adult read a book and having discussions about what they heard. Just listening to someone read fluently, with a proper pace and expression can help students with developing into a beginning reader. We ask students for predictions, inferences, comprehension questions, and integrate mini vocabulary lessons. In hopes of sparking a joy of reading through our read alouds we are introducing the children to new books, authors, and types of literature.

Phase One:

A short but busy week in Phase 1! Congratulations to all the students that reached their AR Goal. They got to participate in a fun AR Party. New goals started this week. Keep Reading!

In Social Studies this week, students learned about what Presidents Day is all about and why we celebrate it. They even discovered that some of our presidents are pictured on our money! We also learned about some important and famous African-Amercians who contributed so much to our country; such as Harriet Tubman, Jesse Owens, and Rosa Parks. We read the book, The Crayon Box That Talked and learned that it takes ALL kinds to make something beautiful!

Conferences are coming up soon. Check your student’s Red Folder for sign ups.

Phase Two:

This week we introduced our biography research project to our phase 2 students. They will be researching a famous American and completing a presentation and a bobblehead of their subject! We are excited to see our students so enthusiastic to get started.

Please fill out and return the Parent-Teacher conference sign up sheet in your child’s green folder today. Conference times will be sent home on February 28th. Conferences will be held on March 10-12. Thank you!

We also received 15 new Chromebooks this week, thanks to our Read-a-Thon donations! Each classroom also received a locking charging cart to store our Chromebooks.

Thank you to all who donated to our Primary Read-a-Thon! This week our classes received new ipads and Chromebooks! We are so fortunate to have these resources in our classrooms. Look at our excited phase 1 students, receiving new ipads for their classroom, delivered by our MHS tech interns!

Allowing 7 days is still much higher than what the district schools allow and we feel 7 days is more beneficial for the school and for each students’ education.

Mrs. Zuniga’s Math:

*Note for all classes: Finals will be taken Wednesday, February 26. If a student is absent, it will be a missing assignment and it will be their responsibility to makeup the final when they return.

Varsity: The students are close to finishing up Unit 3 and we will begin reviewing for our final next week.

Scholastic: We played games to use our fraction kits and have practiced concepts such as equivalent and simplifying fractions. Students took their second quiz this week for the unit and will be reviewing for their final next week.

Honors: Our class took their first quiz on the unit this week. We will be taking a small break next week to review and take our final.

Mrs. Nijjar’s Math:

Varsity: Students learned about equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and fractions on a number line. In the coming students, will be taking the finals for the second trimester, and will later continue with the unit about fractions.

Scholastic: Students spent this week learning about prime factorization, gcf, and lcm. In the coming weeks, students will be taking the finals for the second trimester, and will later continue with the unit about fractions.

Honors: Students completed the fourth unit by learning about word problems, scatter-plots and the best-fit line. In the coming weeks students will be preparing for the finals for the second trimester, scheduled on 2/28/2020.

All of my students are asked to get a Science board (a tri-fold board) by the end of next week. The size of this board needs to (approximately) 48inches x 36 inches.

In the picture below, Scholastic students are having fun learning while playing “GCF-LCM Scavenger Hunt”

Ms. Rodieck’s Language Arts and Humanities:

We have completed another week of learning – a short week with a lot of learning. In Language Arts, the focus was on the difference between friendly and business letter formats. It gave us a chance to practice punctuation rules we have learned (maybe) and capitalization rules. It also gave us the opportunity to practice business letter format for our SWO letters in Math.

We continued reading Frankenstein – the first murder has happened. We know who did it, but the people in the book do not. Varsity continued Comprehension practice in small groups. Scholastic and Honors also heard some music leading us to Opera – we are developing out ear for Opera as we listen to this music. We are also learning all the wild stories that have happened in history that are related to our Humanities curriculum.

Next week is our Trimester Final. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday we will review in class and have some homework. Thursday and Friday will be the final.

Language Arts with Mr. Harding:

What do Prometheus, Victor Frankenstein, Charlie Gordon, and Vivien Thomas all share in common (no punchline)? Hopefully, the learners will be able to draw some original conclusions about where mankind has been and where he is going. We have covered the basic Ancient Greek classics, and we are in the middle of Frankenstein. “Flowers for Algernon” and Something the Lord Made are on the horizon for our next projects. I will have an edited copy of the film and will send permission slips home before viewing. I am excited about the learners comparing a myth, short story, film, and novel to find common themes and make 21st century meaning out of messages for an antiquated audience.

Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy:

This week in Social Studies, students prepared for our quiz on the Golden Age of Athens. They created one page study guides at the beginning of the week and later on we played a review game called “Trashketball”. The rules of the game are quite simple. Either Mr. Bird or I pick a random popsicle stick with a students name on it and we ask them a question. If they get it right, they can come up to the front of the class and attempt to shoot a ball made of scratch paper into a basketball hoop we have in class. They can shoot from the 10, 15, 20, or 25 Nest Point Zone. I think everyone including Mr. Bird and I enjoy this game because it is fun, interactive, and most importantly, it helps students study for the quiz. Next Week we are going to introduce Alexander The Great and Hellenism.

Science with Ms. Diaz:

Greetings scientists! This week, we learned about where most of the Earth’s water is found and that out of all the natural resources, we can only consume 1% of the Earth’s water. D9 also became a court room where we had three cases from three different industries wanting to build their companies/factories near a natural resource. They had to think of three arguments why they should be able to build and how they need to use the resources. In contrast, three groups of environmental conservationists had to present counter-arguments and solutions for the industry’s proposal. See below for the courtroom in action! Next week, we learn about the water cycle which will segway us into learning about the weather.

Technology with Ms. Ferguson:

What a trimester! The second trimester of technology is quickly coming to a close and the students are working extremely hard to get all of their work done by the end!

The students are currently working on their two-part final project. This project is called “shark tank” and for the first part, the students are to make a presentation about a product they have invented or researched that they would like to pitch to a panel of “sharks”, much like the popular TV show Shark Tank. For this presentation, the students will be showing off all of the skills they learned throughout the trimester. For part two of the project, the students will be presenting their product to a panel of “sharks”, which will be students from their class that are randomly picked each day.

It has been a wonderful trimester and I look forward to my last groups of students that begin trimester three with me on March 9th!

Art with Ms. Losen:

In art this week, students are working on creating Pop Art inspired depictions of popular brand logos as well as editing the final cuts of their short films.

A Message from Virginia                                                                 Feb. 14, 2020

On Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020, at approximately 12:47pm we were advised to lock down our school due to a possible arrest taking place on the corner of Mae and Beverly. An overhead announcement was made and all students and staff were sent indoors. We were in direct communication with the Tracy Police Department throughout this ordeal. Our phone message machine’s greeting was changed immediately to give parents an update of our current situation. A Charter Chatter electronic message along with an Aeries text message were also sent out to all parents. We also updated our web page, facebook page and twitter sites. We also allowed students to contact their parents with their cell phones for added reassurance. Our lock down was released at 2:30pm by the Tracy Learning Center.

Parents, please remember to go to tlccharterchatter.com and make certain you are signed up to receive Charter Chatter updates and also be sure to contact the office at (209) 290-0511 with any primary phone number changes.

We feel this “lock down” was handled very well with the end result of the suspect being apprehended. The Tracy Police Department was extremely professional and reassuring and had excellent communication with the school and social media sites. We would also like to extend our appreciation to our parents for their patience and understanding during this somewhat stressful situation. As always, the safety of our students was our biggest focus.

Have a very good weekend and enjoy the extra day off on Monday.

Sincerely,

Tracy Learning Center Staff

Personal/Family Days for Current and Future School Years

VERY IMPORTANT Information for our current 2019/2020 school year beginning August 5, 2019, we have reduced personal/family days for students from 10 days down to 7 days. Allowing 7 days is still much higher than what the district schools allow and we feel 7 days is more beneficial for the school and for each students’ education.

Initial Phase

Important reminder: There is no school this Monday, February 17th for President’s Day!

P2 had a fun day celebrating Valentine’s day! We passed out Valentines, made a fun Valentine themed snack, made bracelets, and played Valentine bingo!

In honor of President’s Day, students started learning all about George Washington and  Abraham Lincoln this week. We will continue our study about these two important presidents as well as important American symbols.

We hope everyone enjoys their long weekend!

This week in TK, we learned all about Presidents and US Symbols.

First, we learned all about some of the US Symbols that we have.  The students created a quilt showing some of the symbols.

Then we learned about Abraham Lincoln.  He has so many items dedicated to him…. The penny, the $5 bill and the Lincoln Memorial.

Next we learned about George Washington.  He was our first president and is on our $1 bill and quarter.

Lastly, we completed a flip book about our US Symbols and our Presidents.  We learned so much!

Phase One:

Phase One students had a great, busy, fun-filled week!  Many students reached their AR Goals this period…some for the first time!  Congratulations!!  AR parties TBA next week.

The Grandparent Interviews were so very interesting.  The students loved sharing facts and things they learned from their grandparents.  It was so fun for them to realize how times change.  Thank you for helping them with this project.

Thank you to all the parents and students who brought treats and wonderful gifts.  Our Valentine’s Day was amazing.  Students ate goodies, did crafts, and learned while having fun.

Remember Monday, February 17th is a holiday and there is no school.  Have a great weekend!

Phase Two:

Wow, what a busy week!  On Tuesday we had our first ever Phase 2 Spanish Spelling Bee!  There were 3 representatives from each class and they all did an amazing job.  Our students enjoyed watching the intense competition and cheering on their classmates.  Congratulations to the first place winner…Santiago from P7!

Thank you to everyone who brought treats, cards, and goodies on Friday.  We definitely earned a day of fun.

Varsity: The students took their first quiz for Unit 3. The students really took to understanding prime factorization, but we are working on really understanding the definitions and concepts of the words they are learning.

Scholastic: Our class has moved into fractions. The students created a fraction kit to help them visualize the problems. We played games to use our fraction kits and have practiced concepts such as equivalent and simplifying fractions.

Honors: Our class is chugging along with Unit 4. Students are making the connections between ratios and fractions. They are also learning about tables to figure out proportional and nonproportional relationships.

Mrs. Nijjar’s Math:

Varsity: Students started with Unit-4 and enjoyed making their own fraction kit. We spent this week learning about equivalent fractions and decomposing fractions. In the coming weeks, students will be learning about comparing fractions using a fraction bar and a number line.

Scholastic: This week started with learning about prime factorization, gcf, and lcm. In the coming weeks, students will be taking a quiz and will be learning about fractions.

Honors:  Students learned to solve the word problems by using the slope formula, point-slope method, and the two-point strategy. Students participated in activities like “Word Problem Carousel” and ” Graph Match-up” to reinforce the concepts learned in Unit-4. In the coming weeks, students will be completing the unit by learning about scatter-plots and the best-fit line.

Ms. Rodieck’s Language Arts and Humanities:

This week we continued reading Frankenstien.   The most important thing we learned is the monster is not Frankenstein; the doctor who created him is named Frankenstein.

Scholastic and Honors are continuing to read weekly articles about the health and wellness of our planet.  Below are pictures of infographics created from this week’s article about bees in the almond groves.

Conferences are coming and you should be receiving the paper about it next week.  That means we will be having a final coming up soon.  We will have a review / study guide – part will be in class and part will be homework.

Language Arts with Mr. Harding:

We’re reading Frankenstein, but no one is scared of the “monster.”  We’re making connections to Ancient Greek literary figures, Artificial Intelligence uses today, and what responsibilities we always have with new technology. We are discussing the balance of automation and freedom, and how our lives are impacted by technological improvements. Our little learners will be ruling the world in 2050. I imagine they will be as upset about losing some technology that has not been invented yet as I am about losing the third pedal in my car. As we are making connections across thousands of years of literature and ideas, I am not testing and quizzing heavily at this moment. However, we will be returning to sentence diagramming and grammar conventions in the coming weeks.

Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy:

This week in 5/6 social studies, our critical thinkers are learning all about the Golden Age of Athens. We are learning about the golden age with learning stations that simulate a walking tour of Athens. Students are discussing the following aspects of Greek culture: religion, sports, sculpture, architecture, drama, and philosophy.

Next week, we will create study guides and play review games to prepare for the next quiz. Please be sure to have students review their reading notes as well.

The quiz on the Golden Age of Athens will be on Thursday, February 20th. Our next lesson will be all about Alexander the Great!

Science with Ms. Diaz:

Greetings scientists! This week, Constellations Quiz A grades have been posted. Constellations Quiz B is being graded as we speak and will be posted thereafter. We ‘took off’ from our Solar Systems unit, finishing off with a test and submitting our moon research. Next week, we dive into studies about the Earth’s water and the water cycle. The top students from Trimester 1 were given their pizza lunch on Friday. Being a great class citizen is both rewarding AND filling 🙂

Last but not least, come one and come all to check out the DCS science blog site at: www.tlcdiscoverychannel.weebly.com. Read all about Facts About Smallpox (Subham Bhattarai) and the Four Scariest Sea Creatures (Isabella Richardson). Prepare to be SCIENCED!

Social Studies with Ms. Zaca:

Hope you’ve all had a wonderful January!

Students in all classes finished the unit on Renaissance and Reformation last week and have began examining the Scientific Revolution.

After learning about Leonardo da Vinci, Dante, Albert Duhrer, and Johannes Gutenberg, students moved onto the Reformation. Students looked at the events leading up to the Reformation and looked at different pictures that portrayed those events. Students discussed about the church’s selling of indulgences and why it angered the common Europeans at that time. They discussed why Martin Luther would post this 95 Theses to church doors and how the printing press helped spread his words to thousands of peasants across Europe.

Students also learned about King Henry VIII and how the catholic church’s reluctance to grant him a divorce from his wife led him to break away from the church and create the Anglican church. Did you know that King Henry VIII married six wives and executed those who did not bore him a son? The irony of all this is that his daughter becomes the future queen of England, who we all know as Queen Elizabeth the first!

Now that the trimester is close to ending, those in Ms. Zaca’s homeroom received parent teacher conference slips that are to be turned in by Friday, February 21st. An email was also be sent out to her homeroom parents about the topics they would like to be discussed at their parents teacher conference. Please fill out the survey to help make this a successful parent teacher conference!

7th and 8th Grade Science Charter Chatter

In the last several weeks, 7th and 8th grade science has been taking a closer look at something they interact with every single day: Water. We started by taking a look at the movie Disney’s Oceans where students were able to see just how vast the world’s oceans are and how much of the Earth’s surface is covered in water. Then we moved on to a slide show of our first set of notes, where we learned that out of the water there appears to be on Earth, we really can only use a shockingly small percentage of that water,  that small percentage of water that we can use is replenished through the water cycle.

We have had the chance to do some really interesting and fun labs and projects during this unit. One of the first projects that students were assigned was to create a story of a drop of water traveling through the water cycle. Students had to create a comic book style booklet that follows a water drop as their main character through a storyline of their choice that included each part of the water cycle. The comic books that students turned in were absolutely hilarious and entertaining while still utilizing all of the key vocabulary from the first set of notes. I was really impressed by the creativity and hard work that students put into this assignment.

The final project for this unit will be for students to explore the water quality of various cities around the United States and around the world. In the Varsity and Scholastic classes, groups of students worked together to research what kind of water people have available to them in several pre-selected cities from around the United States. Students were able to draw from a deck of cards with the pre-selected cities’ names and states written on them. Once a group drew a card, they had to answer five questions about the water that is available as tap water to the residents of their city. These questions included what, if any, kind of water crises the city faces, where the city gets their water from, what kind of contaminants are commonly found in the city’s water, and what kind of water sanitation/purification process the city uses. In Honors, each group was given a short amount of time to research a city to be the focus of their water quality project. Before proceeding with their research on any given city, they had to be able to make a case for why they thought the city that had chosen would be an interesting topic for a water quality project. They will be wrapping up this project when we come back from the three day weekend, and each group will be presenting the information they researched through a slide show and verbal presentation. Each group will also have the opportunity to propose their ideas to improve the water in their city.

THIS WEEK IN SPANISH….

Much has happened since our last chatter article. Students enrolled in Spanish 1 with Mrs. Amador have completed and presented in front of their peers their skit where they applied and demonstrated their conversational skills in a real life situation. Each group showcased their creativity and used many tools from their artistic toolbox to present their skits in their own unique medium. Some presented life, others created a short film, others creatively used voice over techniques using “Minecraft” characters.

Currently, the Spanish 1 class is exploring new grammar concepts and creating complete sentences in the present indicative tense and learning how to communicate information by asking and answering questions related to their school life and schedule. That includes talking about their schedule, study habits, and grades. They also learned how to tell time and to use compound verb tenses.

Spanish 2 students have also completed and presented in front of class their research project on Costa Rica during our unit related to traveling. The class best and most colorful work is proudly displayed on our classroom “Pride Wall”. They used critical thinking skills to answer questions in Spanish about the country’s food, people, politics, their flag and other interesting details. They also reflected on their final product and  answered one of the essential questions for this unit, “Why is it important to learn about other people’s culture and traditions?”

These days, they have been learning to create sentences using more complex verb conjugations that include the present progressive, past preterit, and to use reflexive pronouns when conjugating reflexive verbs. They are learning many vocabulary words about body parts and learning health conditions that may help students who would want to pursue a career in the medical field to speak in Spanish to their patients. This vocabulary and expressions will also help students who would like to travel abroad and might need to explain an ailment to a health personnel.

Spanish 3 students also finished working on their 2nd project. They had to create a script and perform a skit using the restaurant and food vocabulary where they showcased artistic performance and production techniques in order to come up with an interesting story plot. Of course, they also showed their confidence and fluency in the Spanish language as they presented to their peers while being evaluated and sharing their “Wows & Wonders” with each other, after each presentation.

In the current unit, students are learning the imperfect verb tense and other complex grammar concepts towards expressing their thoughts and feelings through performing a bilingual monologue art piece in front of their peers. They are also learning popular songs in Spanish that we are planning to perform at a future school rally.

Spanish I

We are in the middle of our family unit. Students have learned all family members in Spanish. This week we focused on months, numbers, birthdays, and birth dates. Students learned possessive adjectives like mi, tu, su, nuestro/a  to talk about their family members, and their birthdays. Next week we will be covering comparative phrases in Spanish. Students will be able to use these along with adjectives to compare their family members to one another. We will conclude the unit with a family book project, in which students will create their family tree in Spanish. They will also dedicate a page of their book to six different family members. The students will have fun making and sharing their book with the class!

Spanish II

We are finishing our unit about vacation, in which the class learned a lot of vocabulary related to being on vacation.  During this unit, the students learned to conjugate –ar verbs in the preterit tense.  They also learned the preterit conjugations for some irregular verbs. Now they can talk about what they did in the past. This week, the students wrote about their last vacation. They used their new conjugations to tell what they did, while they were on vacation.  They enjoyed sharing what they wrote with their classmates!

Spanish III

We are currently covering informal commands in Spanish III. The class seems to understand them very well, even the irregular ones. This week, we played a game in which the students asked other classmates to do certain things, and those who asked had to perform the action requested.  The class was very creative, and came up with very good commands for their classmates.  The students had so much fun making each other sing, dance, laugh, run, act, and more while practicing Spanish commands.  They also anonymously wrote a problem situation they were facing, and they gave each other appropriate advice to solve their problem. They are now ready to start learning negative informal commands next week!

A message from TLC staff…

image39Feb. 14, 2020

With regards to the events of yesterday,

On Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020, at approximately 12:47pm we were advised to lock down our school due to a possible arrest taking place on the corner of Mae and Beverly. An overhead announcement was made and all students and staff were sent indoors. We were in direct communication with the Tracy Police Department throughout this ordeal.

To keep parents informed of the situation our phone message machine’s greeting was changed immediately to give parents an update of our current situation.  We also sent out updates via our tlccharterchatter.com newsletter along with an Aeries text message was also sent out to all parents. We updated our, Facebook and Twitter pages as well as actively responded to question via Facebook and the newsletter. We also allowed students to contact their parents with their cell phones for added reassurance. Our lockdown was released at 2:30pm by the Tracy Learning Center.

Parents, please remember to go to tlccharterchatter.com and make certain you are signed up to receive Charter Chatter updates and to be sure you are receiving our bulk text messages or phone calls, please make sure your cell phone is your PRIMARY number within AERIES student information system- this is the number we will use to contact you.

TLC Safety Update

A Message from Virginia                                                                 Feb.7, 2020

How to raise a reader

Katie Mills Giorgio

Kidsreadingbooks.

As your kids grow up, the homework demands increase. Middle school and high school activities keep them extra busy, too. It’s been years since they were small enough to sit in your lap and read, and re-read, their favorite picture book.

But just because they are busy and bigger doesn’t mean your kids have to stop reading for pleasure. If you’ve found your kids complaining about picking up a book, read on for some tips to foster their love of reading beyond what’s required in Language Arts class.

  1. Set an example

Like so many facets of parenting, you need to model the behavior you are hoping to see. The other day I was adding a book to my Goodreads “want to read” list and my daughter happened to glance over my shoulder. “739 books you want to read,” she gasped. It’s true. My list is ever-growing, and it feels like I might not ever make a dent. But my kids see me adding books to it, checking out a fresh stack to read from the library, and starting every day reading a couple of poems. If you want your kids to read, they should see you reading, too. When you make time in your busy day to pick up a book, your kids will see that making time to read is an important part of a life.

  1. Remember they don’t have to hold the book

Screens seem to be the root of all arguments here in our house. But screen time doesn’t have to be all bad. If your child loves picking up the iPad or Kindle, load some e-books for them to read and allow them extra screen time privileges if they spend it reading.

You could also let them listen to a book. Audiobooks nearly doubled the amount of reading in our house. We turn up an audiobook every time we are in our vehicle, whether we are commuting 15 minutes to school or hitting the highway on a road trip. Audiobooks at lights-out may settle some children in for the night. The talented narrators for the audio version of books may also be a way to tempt your children into trying a new book.

  1. Surround them with books

Make sure your kids have access to books. “Spend time and money at the bookstore and library,” says mom, writer, and former elementary teacher and literacy trainer Melissa Taylor. “Think of creative ways to infuse books into your child’s life. Perhaps you create a cozy reading corner somewhere in your house. Or perhaps they need a bookshelf in their bedroom if they don’t have one already.

  1. Add an incentive

Taylor suggests starting your own parent-child book club to combine a love of reading with the desires of children to be social creatures. Many local libraries offer reading programs or activities (even for tweens and teens) that offer rewards and incentives for logging reading time outside of schoolwork. My daughter got especially excited about a local program that invites kids to read to shelter dogs.

  1. Read together

The night before my son started high school, I asked if we could just read some of our favorite picture books together and much to my delight he agreed. I’ve made a point to keep reading aloud with my kids as they get older. They’ve really enjoyed the special one-on-one time they get when we read through the Harry Potter books together — they even get to see me cry — or picture books that they adored when they were younger. Just because kids become independent readers doesn’t mean they stop loving being read to. They might not come toddling up to you carrying a book and they might not be up for it every night of the week but reading together at bedtime can still be very good bonding time. Taylor agrees. “I often see kids getting so hooked by these bedtime choices that they’ll take the book and read it on their own during the day,” she says.

  1. Make a match

Nicole Kronzer, a teacher and author whose debut book Unscripted comes out this April, created a book matchmaking activity for her high school students called “Match.com: Going on a Date with a Book!” She has students pick which one of Nancy Pearl’s “Four Doors into Reading” they most identify with: Story, Character, Setting, or Language. From there, she asks students a few more questions about genre and the last book they remember reading that they loved, before matching them with a book that wasn’t on their radar but connects to their interests.

“English teachers tend to be Language and Character people, so we pick those books for whole class reads,” says Kronzer. “If you’re a Story or Setting person, you may have never read a book in English class that you love. Those kids, unless they’re being supported in choosing books outside the classroom, are more likely to identify as non-readers by the time they hit high school.” Finding the right match in a book to read for pleasure, she says, can make all the difference.

  1. Ask for help

Parents who are readers, of course, will have the easiest time picking out books to suggest to their kiddos, but even if they aren’t, independent booksellers and children’s librarians are match-making machines. “I read and write YA and haven’t spent as much time reading middle grade,” says Kronzer. “So, when my eldest daughter reached that age, I went to Wild Rumpus in Minneapolis and said, ‘My kid likes series, fantasy worlds where a lot of action happens, and girl power. Whaddya have for me?’ The bookseller flew around, pointing out two dozen suggestions.”

She suggests parents have their child make a list of their top five favorite books of all time and try to see what they have in common. “I think it can be really powerful to bring your child and have them talk to the bookseller or librarian themselves,” she adds. This can help foster an understanding that they can count on industry professionals to help point them in the right direction of their next read as they grow.

  1. Let them choose

When it’s time for my daughter to kick back and relax, she turns time and again to her shelf full of graphic novels, all of which she’s read through at least four times. They aren’t books I’d pick up and read, but I’m not doing the reading. She got in touch with her love of reading through them. “Graphic novels are actual novels!” emphasizes Kronzer. “I have had many parents ask me what they should give their child if they’re trying to push them away from graphic novels to ‘real’ books. Or if they should put limits on how many times their kid reads the same book over and over. These are urges felt by parents out of love, but I’m telling you, if your kid is reading, rock on.”

“Let them choose,” she continues. “It’s not that there’s never a time to push someone to consider something new, but books should not be treated like vegetables. Keeping independent reading fun and making it something they feel smart and savvy about is key to developing life-long readers.”

TLC Preschool: Art Show and Silent Auction!

TLC preschool will have its annual art show on February 21, 2020 6:30-8:00. More details to come home soon!

Our students are learning all about primary and secondary colors.  Our teachers have been busy teaching students how to paint with primary colors and how to mix them to make secondary colors. Students will use this new knowledge to recreate art just as Eric Carle did in some of our favorite books!

Initial Phase

Today kicks off our Read-A-Thon! It will run through January 31st! This is a great fundraiser for our school and it is so easy to track minutes! Please see the information sheet in green folders for additional information on how to log your students reading minutes!

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, Valentine cards are already out in stores! Students will be able to bring in 66 valentines with the “to” section left blank. A treat can be included with the valentine card. If you have any questions about this please email p2@tracylc.net.

Phase One:

Thank you to all the students that have already returned the Grandparent Interview Form. You still have time to complete it and return it by Monday February 10th.  This week in Social Studies, students had fun creating their own timelines and recognizing important events in their lives. We look forward to the presentations next week!

Please check Green Folders for information about Valentine’s Day as well as other reminders. Also, please note that testing next week will happen on Thursday, February 13th rather than Friday, the 14th.

The Read-A-Thon is officially over and we did amazing!!  But the reading does not stop! Please encourage your student to read daily…AR Goals are due next Friday, February 14th.

Phase Two:

Next week is the phase 2 Spanish spelling bee!  We are proud of everyone who competed at the classroom level this week.  Representatives from each phase 2 class were selected to compete next week.  Great job to everyone who studied hard and tried their best!

This week our 3rd and 4th grade students learned about economics, goods, and even taxes!  This is a great thing to discuss at home or when you’re shopping.

We are also working our fractions unit in math…this is a huge part of phase 2 math.  Do you want to help your child at home? Go on Brainpop, Math Antics, IXL, or youtube! These are all great resources to help your child.

Primary School Improvement Committee!  (SIC) There will be a meeting on Thursday, February 13th at 3:45 in room P8.  If you are not part of the SIC and would like to join, you are more than welcome to attend.

Math:

Varsity: Students took the Unit-3 test this week and started with the next unit which is about fractions. The students enjoyed making their own fraction kit. In the coming weeks, students will be learning more about fractions and the different mathematical operations associated with fractions.

Scholastic: This week, students took the Unit-4 test and started with the unit about fractions. In the coming weeks, students will be learning more about adding and subtracting fractions.

Honors:  Students learned about finding the linear equations using the point-slope method, graphs, slope-formula, and by looking for parallel and perpendicular lines. Students reviewed for the quiz by actively participating in the “Linear Equation Carousel Activity” and solved the “Equation Maze”. In the coming weeks, students will be learning to solve the word problems by using slope formula and linear equations in slope-intercept form.

Ms. Rodieck’s Language Arts and Humanities:

We have started reading Frankenstein in Scholastic and Honors.  Varsity will start next week.

Varsity is also continuing to read articles and work on answering questions using APE.  This will help them all through their life as it teaches them to answer the questions and back it with proof and evidence.

While reading Frankenstein, we will all be reading different articles about the Health and Wellness of the Earth that will culminate in a magazine project (in April).  I firmly believe we need to think about the Health and Wellness of our planet and start thinking of ideas to improve it from a local to a global perspective.

Even though it has been cold in the mornings, it warms up enough during the day for pollens to be popping.  At the same time, we are out of Kleenex in D1 and would really appreciate tissue donations for next points.

Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy:

This week in class we took time away from instruction to build catapults utilizing few supplies and a lot of creativity. All of the students’ catapults were unique. I don’t think we had two catapults that looked the same. On Wednesday we went to the soccer field to see how far our catapults could actually go. The farthest catapult tested the limits and went 10 yards! Thursday and Friday, students are continuing classes by getting into the Golden Age of Athens starting with Pericles.

Science with Ms. Diaz:

Greetings scientists! This week, we had our final constellations quiz and graded the ones from last week. Grades should be posted soon. We continued to track the changes in the moon and created the hypotheses, materials and methods pages for our reports. We started studying as a class for the Solar Systems test on the 12th. We had 6 stations of review activities and attempted to do the activity both with and without notes. Next week, we will finish up and submit our moon reports. Last but not least, the top students from each class (Trimester 1, based on academics and citizenship) were given one of their rewards this week. Students were escorted to MHS to attend and participate in a forensic science class. They were able to learn about a specific poison or toxin, conduct research about it, and then write either a short poem about it or a story about a famous time in history where their particular poison or toxin was involved. See these great students in action below:

The top trimester 1 students from each class were:

Honors 2—> Hayden Compton, Cameron Jimenez, Sophie McCrary, Chloe Pham, Nayomi Shih

Honors 1—> Luke Alger, Ashlan Brantley, Alex Castro, Madison Harrison, Harjap Randhawa, Adhitya Sriram

Scholastic 2—> Benny Aguilar, Deangelo Franco Ortiz, Dario Kristo, Isabella Posadas, Taylor Sansaver

Scholastic 1—> Avery Haines, Leo Kristo, Adara Manzo, Mikayah Moore, Kaitlynn Nguyen, Hazel Zuniga

Varsity 1—> Angel Wood, Kate Valencia, Saniyah Johnson, Gavin Sandoval, Daniel Webster, Edgar Leal Martinez

Varsity 2—> Luz Fonseca, Stacy Alcaraz Aguirre, Fernando Casillas, Dylan Flores, Jose Reyes, Alondra Rivas

Last but not least, come one and come all to check out the DCS science blog site at: www.tlcdiscoverychannel.weebly.com. Read all about the Unbasic Myths About Life (Dominic Ramos), What is a Solar Eclipse Really? (Christina Portocarrero) and Blackholes (Adamary Lopez). Prepare to be SCIENCED!

A Note from Mrs. Cerezo:

Notice to Parents of students in the Varsity 2 class:

A letter has been sent home this week to inform you that starting Week 22, students in this class will begin to be reintroduced to having homework (this may look like: reviewing notes, making flashcards for terminology, annotating their notes, finishing up an assignment not completed in class, etc). Students will be expected to record their homework in their agenda, complete it at home, and it may be checked for a grade in each class. Please be on the lookout for this letter as it explains in detail the methodology behind reintroducing homework to this class in hopes that it will help to increase their sense of accountability and performance in class. Please feel free to contact me at acerezo@tracylc.net with any comments or concerns. Thank you.

MathCounts Competition:

Last weekend our DCS students competed in the count MathCounts Competition in Stockton.

Math with Mr. Dhillon:

Varsity :– Currently doing unit 5 Fraction Basics ( prime, composite and divisibility rules, prime factorization, GCF and simplify Fraction. Converting mixed number to fraction and fraction to mixed numbers ) finished with quiz 3 and now will be doing study guide and then review and unit test .and then we will have finals  for trimester 2

and then unit 6 Multiplication and Division with Fractions ( Integers , graphing and function.)

Scholastic :– Currently doing unit 5 Systems of Equations and Inequalities ( solving the system of equation by graphing, substitution and elimination. And linear inequalities  and word problems of linear inequalities ) and unit 6 Exponents and Exponential Function

Honors :– Currently doing unit 7 Quadrilaterals ( interior and exterior angles of triangles, parallelogram, rhombus, rectangle , square, trapezoids and kite) and completed 5 activities on the unit and will be doing 10 more activities on the unit. Then will be starting with unit 8 Trigonometry.

Mrs. Rapp’s Math Classes

In Varsity, we finished Unit 4 Integers, Graphing, and Functions with a 73% average. Lower than we hoped for, but after some additional assessments we have moved forward to Unit 5. This unit is all about Fraction Basics. Learning the divisibility rules, how to prime factor, find the greatest common factor, and least common multiple to prepare us for all things fractions. Currently, we are working with a fraction kit and exploring how to make one whole with a variety of smaller fractions. We will be unit testing by February 21st. With a Spring Final to follow shortly after.

**Reminder: varsity students are not getting homework several times a week

In Scholastic/Algebra 1, we finished Unit 4 with an 80% average. Unit 5 is Solving Systems of Equations and Inequalities. This unit we are really diving into solving systems by methods: graphing, substitution, and elimination. This unit has been fun so far as we have been able to incorporate a lot of activities and reviews. We will wrap this unit up with a unit test on February 19th or 20th. This class had three students compete last weekend at the Annual Math Counts Competition alongside other 7/8th grade students. Although we did not place, they had fun and got to experience something new. I am so proud of their efforts and dedication.

In Honors/Geometry, we finished Unit 6 with a 89% class average. This unit was challenging as we did similar triangle proofs, but overall we did very well having the second highest average of the geometry classes in 7-12th grade. Unit 7 is all about Polygons and Quadrilaterals. Presenting new challenges as students are finding that parallelogram proofs are a step up from triangle proofs. We will be unit testing on February 19th or 20th. Goal for this unit test is going to be to beat the last average, so 90% or higher.

Meet the Coaches!

image44

I joined Millennium High School as head coach of the softball program in Spring 2020, bringing with me 25 years of youth coaching experience. Helping develop youth has been a passion of mine for many years. For me, it is important to give back to my community and be a positive role model. Youth athletics is more than a game, it is about teaching life lessons such as the value of hard work and perseverance, as well as helping young athletes develop technical skills with great fundamentals, professional character and personal maturity. I began coaching youth sports in 1995 with Tracy Express Softball and Babe Ruth Baseball. Since then, I have also coached at Boys & Girls Club, Louis Bohn Elementary School, Clover Middle School, Millennium High School Boys Basketball and as assistant coach at Millennium High School Softball. My softball background includes managing and coaching girls’ travel ball teams Tracy Titans and Tri-County Smash, and founding and operating my own organization Tracy Yokuts Fastpitch. I am also owner and operator of Moore Quality Pest Control, based in Tracy since 2008. Millennium High School holds a special place in my heart, as all but one of my six children have graduated from the school, so I am honored to serve Millennium families.

A Message from Virginia                         Jan. 31, 2020

Schools of Choice

We are fortunate to have been authorized to become charter schools. There are

approximately 350 charter schools in California. Discovery is one of the oldest

and the first of our three Charter schools, it was established in 2001. Millennium

and Primary were established three years later when we promoted our first group

of eighth-graders. When we began we enrolled 125 students in grades 5 and 6.

Today we have an enrollment in the three schools of over 1200 students. We

added a preschool serving little ones ages 2 to 4. Our Primary school added a

transitional Kindergarten when the age for entering Kindergarten changed. We

have a significant waiting list for grades K-8. We are also very proud of our

accomplishments over the years.

We are a school of choice. We are a public school and are expected to follow the

regulations for teacher certification and other important aspects of schools,

however we have flexibility in how we teach and the materials we use. Our

primary purpose is to provide effective instruction to allow all of our students to

be successful learners.

When we ask students why they have chosen our schools, the answers vary but

can be summarized:

My parents sent me here, but now I like it

I like the small size

I like the personal feel of the campus and the teachers

The teachers care about me

The students are nice to each other

Learning is fun

There is a lot of technology

There are many reasons for selecting our schools. We are pleased that you made

that decision. We take the responsibility of teaching your children very seriously.

Thank you for choosing us.

This week in TK, we learned all about Martin Luther King Jr.

First, we learned all about how Martin Luther King grew up.  Did you know he skipped two years of high school and started college early??

Then, we learned how he told everyone that we should all be treated equally.  The students were able to make hats sharing what their dreams are for the future.  Such great ideas!

Lastly, we looked at a brown and white egg and asked what the differences were.  Once we cracked the eggs, we could see that we may look different on the outside but are the same on the inside.  They enjoyed seeing those eggs crack!

 Phase One:

WOW!  Phase 1 students did an amazing job with the Read-A-Thon! We are very proud of them. We can’t wait to see the final amount!  Thank you to all those that helped donate to our fundraiser.

This week in Social Studies, phase 1 students enjoyed learning about the Chinese New Year.  Ask them some things they learned about the Year of the Rat!

Next week in Social Studies, your student will be continuing their unit on “Then and Now.”  In their Red Folders you will find a Grandparent Interview Form. Please help them fill this out and return by February 10th.

Hope everyone has fun at the Crab Feed!  Have a great weekend!

Phase Two:

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Read-a-Thon!  We will announce the final totals next week. We are so excited about the money raised and (more importantly) the amount of minutes our students read this week!  Great job everyone!

Please remember that the Phase 2 Spanish Family Tree project is due next week!  Senora Wharton has sent home all of the necessary information. Please email if you need further clarification.  The following week will be the Spanish spelling bee! Phase 2 students also have 2 more weeks to meet their AR goals.

Primary Parents:  This will be the last chance to order spirit wear this school year!  Please go to selectspiritwear.com to place your order by January 31. Orders will arrive by the end of February.

Mrs. Zuniga’s Math:

Varsity: The students have begun to look at prime and composite numbers. We are focusing on the vocabulary since these concepts are very abstract. The students have also been practicing for the SBAC that will take place at the end of the year. This test determines students’ placing the following year in math, so it is very important for them to take the practice seriously and try their best.

Scholastic: Our class has now begun Unit 5, looking at prime and composite numbers along with factoring numbers using prime factorization and T-charts. The students are using these concepts to find the greatest common factor of two numbers or GCF and this will be useful when we begin looking at fractions.

Honors: Our class just completed the Unit 3 Test. They began Unit 4 of ratios and rates. Next week, we will be practicing and diving more into the beginning of this unit.

Mrs. Nijjar’s Math:

Varsity: This week students spent time learning about Least Common Multiple (LCM) and explored different strategies to do the same. In the coming weeks, students will be taking the quiz and will be learning about bases and exponents.

Scholastic: In this week, students completed the unit by learning about multiplying and dividing integers. In the coming weeks, students will review the concepts and take the unit test.

Honors:  In this week, students learned about converting linear equations in standard-form to slope-intercept form and graph the same. In the coming weeks, students will be learning to write linear equations for a given point and slope.

All my students started working on part-2 of the SWO Lifelong Learner project. The students are encouraged to do research at home and complete the graphic organizer by January 31st.

Ms. Rodieck’s Language Arts and Humanities:

In Scholastic and Honors, our week has been focused on completing our newspapers from Fever 1793.  I originally envisioned an on-line assignment, but students wanted to make it look like a newspaper.  So they were given the option. Below are some completed projects and works in progress. I am very impressed with their creativity.

Language Arts with Mr. Harding:

We are all about Ancient Greece in Harding’s ELA. We have browsed through the major gods and a couple of most popular stories. On deck, Jason tries on a gold fleece jacket, Theseus plays with a ball of yarn, Phaeton tries to drive his father’s car, and so much more. With Social Studies, Math, and Science all teaching aspects of Ancient Greek culture, we will be able to draw some conclusions about who they were, and perhaps get some insights into who we are as a culture as well.

The students are finishing their posters for Fever, 1793, the movie. Please check Google classroom for more details about the assignment. Next week, we will begin a create your own Ancient Greek god project, and we will study instructional/procedural text. I hope the learners like origami!

Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy:

This week in Social Studies we have been finishing up learning about Sparta, Athens, and the Greco-Persian Wars.  Our quiz was on Thursday and we have been enjoying some new and exciting review games. One of the review games is called “Beach Ball” where students throw the ball to students to ask and answer questions.  Starting next week we are introducing a project on learning about Catapults. Students will get into groups and try and create a catapult to launch an object the furthest. This activity is a great segue into learning more about the Golden Age of Athens.

Science with Ms. Diaz:

Greetings scientists! This week, we were not only quizzed on the constellations we learned the last two weeks, but we also learned our last constellations Taurus, Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor. The constellations and myths we created were submitted and will be used to decorate the science room ceiling, creating a celestial ambiance. We continued to track the changes in the moon and created the cover page for our moon report. Last but not least, after sharing our own theories on the solar system and how it was created, we learned what Galileo, Copernicus and Aristotle thought about the universe. It was so interesting to see the evolution of theories eventually becoming accepted fact. Next week, we will continue to work on our moon reports, will be quizzed on the remaining constellations, and will begin studying for our BIG solar systems test. Over and out!

Last but not least, come one and come all to check out the DCS science blog site at: www.tlcdiscoverychannel.weebly.com. Read all about the The Top 3 Most Dangerous Sea Animals (Jayden Aguilar) and Inside a Baseball (Benny Aguilar).

Thank you.

Language Arts with Mrs. Cerezo

Since returning from winter break we have hit the ground running! The second trimester for LA is comprised of a lot of writing! Each class is working on their SWO. The second trimester SWO is dedicated to researching a topic and crafting a well-written and well-researched essay to teach the class about their topic. This project will culminate in a formal speech, given to the class at the end of February.

Beyond that we have begun to learn about theme and how to construct a thematic statement that is original and complex. Each student created a “hashtag” to represent a theme within Frankenstein. (Pictured below)

unnamed (2)

As of Week 23 all of the classes have finished our reading of Frankenstein and have presented their Frankenstein final projects, wherein they needed to “create” their own monster using parts of humans in the world (with explanations detailing why they used those parts). The students were incredibly creative and very detailed in their monster renditions. Here is an example!
unnamed (1)

Over the next few weeks we will continue to work on our SWO, peer edit our first drafts, and prepare for our speeches. We will also begin our next novel Flowers for Algernon and continue our discussion (continued from Frankenstein) of ethics in science.  (Picture below- student post-it response to “Should there be a limit to what we can accomplish through science?”)
unnamed

Language Arts with Ms. Greene:

We have finally completed Frankenstein! Moving forward we will be reading Flowers for Algernon which is personally one of my favorites from this semester. For all classes they have been working diligently on their SWO’s for Trimester 2. This SWO will be due February 24th.

In all classes we have been working on Humanities and preparing them for the art and music sections from the Academic Pentathlon. Coming up, students will be touching on different types of poetry and poets that write about our theme this year, health and wellness. Reminder: we have tests every week unless the students are notified otherwise.

This Week in Social Studies….

World Geography:

In World Geography we just wrapped up our Europe unit. We took a look at the various aspects of Europe’s physical and cultural Geography and how its diverse geography played a role in important historical events. This week we started a new unit on the world’s oceans, where we will explore not only the Oceans biosphere and various zones of the ocean but also how the interaction of humans with the ocean can have an immense impact on the health of our planet as a whole. -Mr. Hall

World History:

Students will identify key components of the Industrial Revolution and relate the need for raw materials to the increasing imperialism of the 19th century. Class discussions will identify motivations for imperialism, and trace its impact to today. Students have created political cartoons that display Britain’s superiority in the Industrial Revolution.

– Mr. Hunt

United States History:

We have had a great start to the second semester. The students are now comfortable with the load of the class and are really in rhythm. We have just started the WWII two unit and the students have done a great job in making connections from their pervious World History class. So far this semester the focus has been document based questionings and source analysis. This is a skill that will help students with up the coming smarter balance assessment because it emphasis writing analysis, and focuses on deeper levels of questionings. – Mr. Singh

Government:

The start to the second semester in government has been great. This is a different class from economics. We have begun with an introductory unit on examining the fundaments of the U.S constitution and examine the motivations of the framers of the US Constitution. Discussions in the classroom revolve around how the constitution’s influences can be seen in the framework of our government today. This is the longest unit of the semester as we dive into each Article of our constitution. The students are also becoming teachers in the classroom. The project they are currently working on requires them to become experts on specific sections of the constitution and then find ways to teach the rest of the class. I am looking forward to the results.

-Mr. Saldate

Economics:

We just wrapped up the first unit and overall the class performed extremely well. The students have a very strong foundation on the introductory economy terms and fundamental economic concepts. The students are learning to relate and apply these concepts to the “real world” and each week they are writing a synopsis of a current news article that pertains to these issues we are learning in class. The students also have been making great connections to the real world and we as a class have had fantastic discussions. This week we have started the supply and demand unit. This is by far the most challenging unit of the class because it involves math but I believe this class will excel at it. – Mr. Singh

Sutter Tracy Community Hospital Field Trip

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

On Wednesday, 45 Millennium students took a walking field trip to Sutter Tracy Community Hospital to view and learn about a robotic surgery assist machine called the Da Vinci XI.  It is a robot that allows surgeons to perform highly magnified, minimally invasive surgeries with a machine that is more mobile than the human hand. We heard from surgeons and other hospital staff about the machine’s development, and many students got to have a hands-on experience of moving small rubber bands onto small cones using the machine – it felt like virtual reality!  It was fascinating and a lot of fun! Pictured above are Celina Anwar, Ms. Drake, Mrs. Griffin and Austin Karabensh using the machine.
