VERY IMPORTANT Information for our current 2019/2020 school year beginning August 5, 2019, we have reduced personal/family days for students from 10 days down to 7 days. Allowing 7 days is still much higher than what the district schools allow and we feel 7 days is more beneficial for the school and for each students’ education.

HEADS UP IN CARLINE!!! Softball season is underway! PCS/DCS parents, softball games begin at 4pm. If you sit in carline (or park along Mae at Acacia/Carlton), please be advised that you are doing so at your own risk. Foul balls/errant balls DO end up in the street so be mindful on game days, for the sake of your windshields. TLC Preschool
At Preschool we work hard at helping our students learn that they are in control of their own upset. We teach our students to use breathing techniques such as the S.T.A.R to help feel calm again. S.T.A.R is an acronym for:
Stop
Take a deep breath
And
Relax
Try it! You’ll find that it works for adults too!
Initial Phase
P2 had so much fun celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday in our jammies! We read tons of Dr. Seuss books, made rhyming hats, stacked cups to make truffula trees, and made a “Fox in Socks” puppet.
We also started our science unit on bridges. We read “21 Elephants and Still Standing” about the Brooklyn Bridge. Students learned about different types of bridges and what can help make a bridge more strong and stable. Students participated in drawing up their own plans and building a bridge that would hold 21 elephants, just like in the book.
Next week will be a review week for Language Arts and Math. This allows time for teachers to get students extra help in any areas that they may be struggling in.
This week in TK, we learned all about Habitats.
First, we learned all about the Arctic Habitat. Some of the animals that live there are polar bears, seals and arctic foxes. The weather can get as low as –50. Brrr!
. Next we learned about the Rainforest Habitat. There are four levels in this habitat! Some of the animals that live here are birds, snakes, monkeys and sloths.
Lastly, we learned about the Ocean Habitat! The kids really enjoyed learning about all the animals that live here. Some are octopus, squid and even plants like seaweed.
Phase One:
Phase 1 had a lot of fun celebrating Dr. Seuss’s Birthday! We enjoyed reading books by Dr. Seuss, making crafts, and learning in our comfy pajamas. We even had a dance party at lunch time. We are lucky to be able to learn and have fun at the same time.
In Science we explored the difference between inherited traits and acquired traits. We demonstrated how traits could be inherited by doing a fun activity. We created baby eggs that had characteristics from both mommy and daddy eggs. What cute creations they were!
We are excited for the Book Fair next week. It will take place in the Gym, Monday – Friday from 8:00 – 4:30. Come by and take a look!
We look forward to meeting with all of our parents next week during parent- teacher conferences. Please let your students’ teachers know if you will not be able to attend, so other arrangements can be made.
Congratulations to all the students that earned their Green Certificate for Trimester 2!! Great Job!!
Phase Two:
This week our phase 2 students finished their American Hero bobblehead dolls. They are so creative! We also completed our reports and will conclude our presentation part of the project next week.
Don’t forget next week is parent-teacher conferences and it’s also the Scholastic Book Fair! The book fair will be held in the gym every day next week form 8:00-4:30. You can also order any of the book fair books online!

Varsity: Students are completing Unit 3 this week and our hope is to take our Unit test this week. We did a coloring activity to review prime factorization and exponents. (See photos below)
Honors: Students reviewed proportion word problems this week and took their second quiz for the unit. We also began to look at percent proportions which is very common in everyday shopping.
Scholastic: Students are completing Unit 5 this week and hope to take our unit test this week. Next week we will begin looking into operations of fractions.

Trimester 2 is done. That means 14 more weeks of school, and they go fast. Trimester 3 is a time for students to apply what they have been learning in projects. It is also a time for State Testing.
We look forward to conferences next week and having the students share with you their progress.
Language Arts with Mr. Harding:
We have one trimester left, and it is going to be the best one yet! We begin this trimester focusing on expository texts like newspaper and magazine articles, instructional texts, and informational websites. We will be evaluating what we read for text features and effectiveness so that when we present information we are clear, concise, and can grab your attention. The first hurdle: making a paper swan. Maybe the texts will be sufficient, maybe they will be missing some steps – the learners will have to be able to analyze instructions, not just follow them. This is a very important life skill, not just an ELA skill. Hopefully, they will know the difference between a good “How to” text and one that is missing something. Along the way, we will have fun.
Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy:
This week in Social Studies, we are taking advantage of the great weather and conducting our Olympic Pentathlon games. On the days Wednesday and Thursday classes went out to the field and became Olympians. They Competitions were footraces, the long jump, the discuss throw, and the javelin throw. A quiz was given Friday on the Legacy of Ancient Greece. Next week we are having our unit test on all of Ancient Greece. We will hold a few study reviews classes and students should be studying from notebooks when they go home.
Science with Ms. Diaz:
Greetings scientists! This week, we began writing up our Water Cycle lab reports. Because we’ve had so much practice, we have graduated to submitting individual lab reports, no longer needing peer guidance. Of course, this doesn’t mean that we can’t collaborate with each other if questions do arise. On Monday, more Trimester 1 top 5 students attended an MHS forensics class. They learned about DNA and a procedure called PCR (polymerase chain reaction) that makes billions of copies of the same DNA strand. Check out the picture below for some awesome handiwork. We also played Kahoot! to review for our water cycle quiz which was on Wednesday. On Thursday, we moved on from the water cycle and learned about what weather actually is. What different types of weather are there? Next week, things are going to get exciting because we will learn about severe weather and what causes it. We are going to be “blown” away with all the interesting facts!

Leadership:
Winter has come and gone, and spring is finally here (whether our allergies care or not)!!!
Now that the weather is nicer, Discovery is hosting its beautification days again. We will be participating in our Campus Beautification on Saturday, March 14th, from 8:00-10:00 am. 7th/8th students were sent home permission slips this week and are due Tuesday, March 10th to Ms. Zaca at carline.
Mrs. Rapp’s Classes
This week we wrapped up the second trimester for all of 7/8. In Varsity we finished strong with a cumulative final on units one through 5. Achieving a class average of 70%. We are diving right into Unit 6 which covers Multiplication and Division with Fractions. Currently, there are no big dates coming up other than a unit test in the weeks to come.
Scholastic/Algebra 1 is working through Unit 6 on Exponents and Exponential Functions. With a class average of 92% on the first quiz, we are shooting for an average of 90% or higher on the unit test. Some of the activities that we have been doing to practice in class have been a lot of whiteboard practice as well as activities that allow us to get up and move. We have done scavenger hunts and task card scoots to practice all of the exponent rules that we have been learning. We will be tentatively be testing on March 20th.
Honors/Geometry is continuing in Unit 8 on Right Triangles and Trigonometry. This has been a fun unit this far as we have really taken a look at right triangles and the beginning of trigonometry. As a teacher, this is one of my favorite units in Geometry. Students really get an understanding of geometric application problems this unit and a small start of what they will see later in PreCalculus. Our Unit test will tentatively be on March 19th or 20th.

Activities
Millennium Charter Prom is 3/14, from 7-11 at the Stockton Golf and Country Club, Delta Ballroom. The theme is “An Evening at Gatsby’s”. Tickets are $80 and may be purchased by check, cash, or card through Miss Lamanna.
A full, three-course gourmet dinner and dessert are included in that price! The menu is:

Disneyland Grad Nite
Some seniors have still not paid their $50 deposit for Disneyland. The $50 deposit to reserve your spot on the Disneyland Grad Nite trip was due by March 1st. This may be paid through our paypal donation portal at the bottom of the page on http://tracylearningcenter.com, or through our front office or Miss Lamanna by check, cash, or card. The full cost to attend Disneyland is $240. The $50 deposit reserves your student’s ticket and counts toward the $240 cost. Packets were sent home with students regarding this trip on our return from Winter Break. Extra information/release form packets are available in the front office and with Miss Lamanna.
This week in English…..
MHS English Department Charter Chatter Week 28
In English I, students are completing their unit on Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar; English 2 is finishing their unit on Hamlet. Both groups are working on sentence structure, using evidence in their writing, and incorporating literary devices. The quarter is wrapping up with students completing their unit final and projects. Students will then begin their unit on Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. This unit will also incorporate background information on The Great Depression and the history of migrant ranch workers in California. This is unit and a novel that students always enjoy.

In each class, we are completing our Shakespearean plays and will be wrapping up with a unit project and a unit test in the near future. Soon, we will begin our next book, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Each class is continuing to improve their writing skills. English 1 is learning to incorporate evidence in their body paragraphs and responses as well as learning to vary their sentence structure with compound sentences. English 2 is learning to identify, diagram, and write different types of complex sentences. Every class is developing their diagramming skills and expanding their vocabulary through weekly assignments.

English 3 students truly enjoyed their projects for The Scarlet Letter.
English 3 is now beginning their unit on I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.
English Four is reading “A Thousand Splendid Suns.” This novel is returning to our curriculum after a two-year hiatus. Students are enthralled by the story so far! Students are very excited about graduation, but still working hard to master the concepts on our curriculum map. This year has been successful so far, and I can’t wait to find out which great colleges that have accepted our seniors! Please help your senior be successful as motivation can start to negatively affect their performance in the last two months of school.

In English 4, we have begun reading Macbeth by William Shakespeare. We started this unit by reading about and discussing the historical basis for the character of Macbeth. As we read we will analyze the play and we will focus on the theme of Fate vs. Free Will. We will ask the question “Does Hamlet have control over his own destiny, or is he playing into the cruel hands of fate?”

Summer College Early Start Process has begun for 9th-11th Graders!
On Friday 3/6, informational meetings were held during lunch for students interested in taking a Delta College Class this summer. Students who missed the meeting can pick up info at the Counseling Office. The first step is to apply to Delta College ASAP here, this weekend preferably!: https://deltacollege.edu/apply Students will need to provide their Social Security Number. It is important to get this step done ASAP to meet necessary deadlines. Ultimately, the College Early Start Form is due to the MHS Counseling Office on Wednesday, March 25th. Quarter 3 Ends March 6th
Report cards will be mailed out soon! We are now in the home stretch…Quarter 4! Make sure your students are working hard and preparing to finish this semester strong! Quarter 4 ends on May 21.
FAST TRACK – Our Mandatory Summer School Program
Official Dates: Friday May 22 – Friday June 26
FAST TRACK is our mandatory summer school program that students utilize to make up classes they failed or to get ahead. The program is five weeks long and students will be in school half a day. Students are able to earn a total of 10 credits, which is a year of one course.
Attendance to Fast Track is extremely important – missing one day is like missing an entire week of school! Additionally, students must be present a certain number of hours for us to be able to award credit for a class. Fast Track Attendance Policy: Students are only allowed to miss 8 hours of time during the entire FAST TRACK. Tardies count as one hour and a day is four hours. Any combination above 8 hours results in a need to withdraw and an F grade for the affected semester. There are no excused absences during FAST TRACK. Students may not miss more than two days. Four tardies are the equivalent of one day of school, therefore; two days absent and one tardy will result in a failing grade.
Learning Plans
Starting next week, the Counselors and Mrs. Stewart will be meeting with every student individually from 9th-11th grade to review their transcript and academic progress, and plan their schedule for Fast Track and the following school year.
