Good morning TLC Families,

We are so pleased with the work our students are doing.  The pride our Primary children are showing in the work they are doing and the pictures they are sending is remarkable.  They are truly being “productive and self-directed learners”

We are pleased with the effort to continue community service by our students as they work within their families to help out during these times.  We are pleased that they see the value of being a community at home.

This Wednesday,  we will send a letter home to all of our high school students as they will be wrapping up the fourth quarter towards the end of May and will need their FASTTRACK assignment.  The letter will inform the student of the course for FastTrack and the code for entering the class online. All Fast Track classes will be online.   We believe this will be a success because our students value fast tack and we know they will do well in the assigned course. They have proven they are good with online assignments these last four weeks and our staff are excited to see this continue.

Preparations are underway for the awards day for our high school students, and for graduation.  We are also preparing for an 8th-grade promotion that will follow a similar style to our high school graduation.  Not having everyone on campus at this time can be disheartening but we are all working together to make this a moment to remember to talk about for years to come.

Most of all, we are pleased with the flexibility of our student body.  They have adjusted and are doing well.  We appreciate the support from our parents as we all adapt to a new way of learning and teaching. Thank you!

As always, please go to tracylearningcenter.com for all the classroom weekly assignments and activities.  This is also an easy way for your students to find their weekly work.

Our Millennium counselors and staff have been working for weeks to find a way to make sure our amazing seniors get the 4th quarter they deserve.  After 12 years of learning, Senior year is a special time for students we all know how hard our class of 2020 has worked to get to this moment in their lives.  We are all so proud of you. Unfortunately, the global pandemic has brought a lot of twists and unknowns to all aspects of everyone’s lives.

We all hope this situation passes soon and we monitor all communication coming from the State of California, the county health department and the office of education. But we are also concerned that, like most other aspects of life, we will not be able to proceed as we normally would with our senior activities.

Because we cannot hold large gatherings, our staff have been working together and want to try and make some lemonade out of the lemons we have been given.   As we go through the senior events below we tried to find a way to make some of these memories still happen. While we are not allowed to hold a graduation ceremony or go to Prom or Disneyland, we want to still give you a day to remember.

Graduation: We understand that graduation is one of the most important parts of the high school experience and we are committed to making the best possible event that we can, given the circumstances. The Millennium High Graduation is still scheduled for Friday, May 22, 2020. At this time, we are not rescheduling/postponing the date for a traditional in-person ceremony. It is highly unlikely that we will be able to have a public gathering. In compliance with federal, state, and county orders, public gatherings are prohibited which will likely continue into the next several months. However, we will be recognizing this special moment with a “Drive Through” ceremony while still practicing social distancing. An invitation will be emailed and/or mailed out with specific details of a drive-through graduation by early May. We are planning something very unique and we believe that it will be a fun and festive experience for all! Some ideas include decorating cars, signs, music, photo opportunities, a real stage to receive your diploma, raffles, food, etc., once again, all while practicing social distancing. We will also have a dynamic virtual ceremony that will be shared as a keepsake of this special occasion available to all graduates and their families. All cap and gown orders have been placed and will be distributed before May 22nd. More information to follow in the near future.

GRAD Night: As Disneyland is now closed, Disneyland Grad Night is canceled and will not be rescheduled. We will fully reimburse all students that purchased tickets. If you paid for this event, you will be mailed a reimbursement check. Reimbursements will take 4 – 6 weeks for delivery. Please double check your mailing address as listed in Aeries. If you do not receive your refund by May 20th, please contact bramirez@tracylc.net.

Senior Breakfast: Unfortunately, our Senior Breakfast is canceled.

Prom: Our prom that was scheduled for March 14 was canceled. We will reimburse all students that had purchased tickets. You will receive a reimbursement check. If you paid for this event, you will be mailed a reimbursement check. Reimbursements will take 4 – 6 weeks for delivery. If you do not receive your refund by May 20th, please contact bramirez@tracylc.net

Awards Ceremony: Our Awards Ceremony is scheduled for May 13, 2020. As of right now, this event will still take place virtually. We will have details about the ceremony later.

College Admission: Continue to send college acceptance letters/emails to mhscounseling@tracylc.net for UC and CSU, May 1st is still the “Intent to Register” deadline to accept admission offers. Final Transcripts: Final transcript requests will still be processed. Email mhscounseling@tracylc.net for requests between June 1st – June 15th

TLC Monday Morning Memo – April 20th

Monday Morning Message

– Virginia Stewart – TLC Executive Director

Capture

Good morning,

I have received some emails with messages I would like to share. Some are from our high school students stating that they are stressed with the amount of work they are being given online.  Some are from parents and students of seniors who feel we have been unkind and insensitive to the seniors about graduation.

I take feedback seriously and share it with other leaders in our schools. The TLC Board has also asked to give input.  It may be best to share our thinking that went into proposing an alternative.

No one expected the pandemic to go on.  We were given several dates for the end of the stay at home… April 20, May 1, etc.  The Governor and the state department added that schools would be closed for the rest of the school year.  No matter what the date, most authorities add that life will not be as it was. We cannot gather safely until we have herd immunity.

The Governer even spoke about “Businesses and retailers having to redesign their stores.  Schools are considering new protocols for the fall, such as staggering class times to limit the number of students in a classroom at a time, reducing group meals and changing PE, assembly and recess policies. And there will be “deep sanitization, massive deep cleaning.”

“Oh, and don’t get your hopes up about attending a Fourth of July parade or going to a summer concert.”

  • Newsom: “The prospect of mass gatherings is negligible at best until we get to herd immunity and we get to a vaccine. So large-scale events that bring in hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of strangers … is not in the cards” for “June, July, August.”

Given the guidelines we are facing, we needed to plan a graduation that respects the work of our seniors and the milestone they are completing.  We shared our best thoughts on how to do that. Plan. 57% were pleased, the rest were upset. We understand how difficult change is, but if we just wait and hope that we can have graduation at a later date, we would have no plan at all. If all things are back to normal soon, we can certainly go on with our traditional plans. Those plans are still available.  The traditional graduation has been planned for a year in advance and is still in place, but we needed to prepare for an alternative.

As for the workload of our students, we have an obligation to provide work and new learning for our students.  Schools are expected to continue to educate. The workload is spaced out over a week. This takes planning and calendaring for our students.  It is not all due on Monday when the work is assigned. Students cannot wait for the last minute to do the work. Teachers are available to help if students email them.  Most teachers are holding meetings to answer questions and to have more personal student contact.

We are working very diligently to do what is right in the long run for our students.

Discovery and Primary students are working well and are sending good feedback to their teachers. Learning how to teach online is a steep learning curve and takes time and adds stress to the teachers and they miss their students more than words can say.  We appreciate all the families who are doing the work and giving us feedback.  We sincerely hope the pandemic and isolation is over soon. We all want to go back to the way things were.

8th Grade Parents!
I know this is a challenging and uncertain time for everyone and that our not being in school changes some of the Promotional activities that our 8th-grade students would typically participate in.
I want to assure everyone that the DCS staff will absolutely be planning some way to recognize each of our promoting students! We will send out information as the date gets closer.

TLC Monday Message

Monday Morning Message

Capture

It is important to keep looking at the positive when we feel sad or isolated.  After several weeks of being inside, it is easy to start feeling down. That is when it is important to change things up a little. You can:

  • Make a different breakfast
  • Have a dance party
  • Play a board game
  • Learn a new skill
  • Exercise or do yoga every day
  • Do one of the online assignments together.  Ask your student to teach you how to do it.

As I continue planning for the new school year, some of what I have learned from online teaching will play a role in what we do for the future.  I think it is important to consider what did we learn from this experience:

  •  Online learning is an effective way to learn and teach but will never replace the social aspect of learning in a classroom
  • Being flexible and trying things is an important thing to be able to do
  • Social interaction is important and listening to one another is part of growth
  • Saving money for future unknowns is necessary
  • Jobs really should be valued for money but also for identity and satisfaction
  • We need one another and many jobs we took for granted will be more valued in the future
  • Somethings will never be the same, but they might be better.

I appreciate the staff at the Tracy Learning Center.  I am proud of their commitment to teaching and learning how to be effective teachers online.  It is not an easy transition. But they are doing it well.

We have made some changes to how we deliver our weekly activities and assignments.  Based on suggestions from some wonderful parents we are trying to find easier ways for you and your students to access their work.  If you go to tracylearningcenter.com you will find our homepage now has links to the different classrooms and schools.  We will keep this updated with the weekly work as well as send it out in emails as we have been doing.  Our goal is to make this easier for you and your students.

We continue to give out Chromebooks for students who need a computer.  We still have some students who have not linked to our learning on-line, but most have and most are doing a great job.  Some are finding this is a better way for them to learn!

Tracy Learning Center – Monday Morning Memo

Monday Morning Message

Capture

Good morning from TLC.  All of us are missing you and hoping you are all well.  These are trying times, we all feel the loss of social interaction and the confines of staying at home.  For those of you who are still physically going to work, it feels bittersweet to be outside and worried yet freeing to be someplace other than home.  The office staff and school leaders meet each Friday from 8 to 10 to strategize in this on-going changing times.  We are convinced that patience and problem solving are the two greatest attributes we have right now as we navigate how to bring learning to our students and keep our staff optimistic and productive.  Yes, teachers miss the students and want them back as soon as possible.  Teachers are very dedicated people.  They are thrilled when students learn.

The big question many of you have is about grade promotion.  Many want to know if their student will need to repeat the grade.  The answer is No. All students, TK to 8, will be promoted. The teachers will take into account a need for review and new learning when the students return.

The high school students, on the other hand are expected to complete the courses they are enrolled in by the end of the quarter.  Each week, the teachers in those courses are assigning and grading work. The grades are posted in Aeries. The work provided is not optional.

Starting this week, the students in grades 7 and 8 will be assigned one assignment per teacher that is expected to be completed by the end of the week.  It is our hope by the end of our extended school year these students will have completed the courses they are taking. This is really important for math.  Math is a key factor in determining course placement even in college!

I will be writing and posting my message each Monday.  If you have questions, let us know. Thank you for being a part of the Tracy Learning Center Schools.  We value your support.

TLC Closure Update

Probably by now, you have seen the news that the county has closed schools until the end of the academic year.  It is true for our schools as well, but it is important to realize that learning is still taking place.  True, the buildings are closed, but the staff is still teaching and children are still learning.  We did an amazing job of switching over to distance learning and the students have responded perfectly.
We are all in a learning curve with virtual teaching and learning and it is exciting and necessary to keep our students engaged and successful as learners.
This week, we launched graded assignments and work for all of our high school students.  Next Monday, we are launching mandatory, graded assignments for 7th and 8th grade.  To aid those families with limited internet access, we are also enhancing our school wifi to allow students to connect from our parking lots.  You will be able to park in our MHS parking lot and connect to complete or submit work.  More information to follow.
All of our other grade teachers are in contact with students and helping them navigate options online.
Our Champions program is accepting applications for students grades K to 6 who may need child care if their parents are physically going to work.  They need 12 students to open and are ready to do so at any time.
We are here for you and will be sending out details about graduation for high school in the near future.
We are hoping that we can physically have our extended five weeks in June but it not, we will continue online. The safety of our staff and the TLC community is the most important to us.
We miss you and wish you good health.
