I met Blake Keys, back when he was in the 3rd grade. He was sweet, quiet, and shy and kept very close to his mom. Over the years I have watched Blake become a very confident, outgoing, and helpful teenager. He is always polite and respectful and has developed a great sense of humor. I see the other kids look up to Blake and he seems to set an excellent example of what our Future Falcon’s stand for. Blake will do great in high school and will go on to be an exceptional young adult. The 2020 yearbook has arrived and is ready to be enjoyed and cherished. We will be doing a drive-through, physically distanced pick-up on Friday, June 26, from 12:00 pm to 2:30 pm in the MHS parking lot.

For safety and to comply with public health requirements, we ask that you please form and stay in the line of cars, remain in your car until you have reached the pick-up spot, and please wear a mask.

Please be mindful of one another’s safety when moving through the line of cars. We look forward to you receiving your yearbooks Friday!

This is the last week of classes for all TLC students,  then we all get a well-deserved month off.  As our staff gets ready for the unknowns of the coming year, we will be collecting all Chromebooks that were checked out to students for home use.

So on THURSDAY and FRIDAY JUNE 25th and 26th, we are asking that parents and students to return the devices to TLC’s campus.  Staff will be on hand with the lists of student’s names and Chromebook serial numbers.  The process is fast but to make it safer and more orderly we ask that schools return their devices during their designated times.

You will be returning your devices at your scheduled time for ‘PCS Pick-up’  This is Thursday or Friday from 9:30 -2:00.  Please check the tlccharterchatter.com or ask your teachers if you are unsure.

Only One in Five Schools Offered ‘Rigorous’ Remote Learning, Study Says

Only 20 percent of schools offered rigorous, technology-based remote instruction while school buildings were shut down this spring, according to a new report from the American Enterprise Institute, and students in K-12 districts with a majority of high-poverty or low-achieving students were less likely to receive rigorous instruction at a distance.

Nat Malkus, the institute’s deputy director of education policy, examined the websites of a nationally representative sample of 250 districts. He organized his findings on remote learning plans into three categories:

• “Rigorous”: Delivered content through online platforms; offered some synchronous learning (via Zoom or another videoconference platform); tracked student attendance or otherwise expected student participation; and graded students’ work to some extent.
• “Perfunctory”: Relied primarily on paper instructional packets; explicitly stated students were not required to participate; or didn’t offer information about remote learning on its website.
• “Moderate”: Somewhere in between “rigorous” and “perfunctory.”

Overall, Malkus found one-fifth of schools fit the “rigorous” category, with 40 percent each for the other two.  

No wonder our students and teachers are tired and are happy to know we are almost done with our school year. We are in the 20% who gave more than most schools and our students have profited from it. 

It is time though for a break.  We will return in August.  We are in the process of planning what the actual arrangement will be for the start of school.  If things continue to open up and we are ahead of the curve for COVID 19, we expect to be more in person than not. Details for each school will be explained as we get closer to the start of school.

Expect that your child will be returning to school in some form. While we appreciated online teaching and learning, we know it is not a replacement for in person.  We want to strive to create the conditions for in-person learning.  

Meanwhile, students will be receiving report cards, and we will celebrate the end of eighth grade with a promotion. Fast track will end next Friday.  All students will get their placements or schedules for next year in early July.  Further information will be coming regarding return to school….. but mark your calendars, we will be starting August 3!

Good Morning

It is a time of trouble for all of us.  We are all feeling something during these troubled and difficult times.  We are hurting for the injustice to others, we are worried financially, and we are bored or just plain tired with how busy being at home can be.  We worry about going out without a mask ( and we should be wearing one for our sake as well as for others) but though all of this somehow, we need to cope and make things better in the times to come.

My remedy for this is to work, work at being positive. I want to find the good in the things and people around me.  I do not want to feel negative or listen to people who are negative that are making me feel down or sad or angry.  I believe it is a time to have hope, to feel that things will evolve and get better.  We have to believe that for it to happen.

So on a very positive note, I want to praise our staff for the outstanding service they have done teaching our students. I believe our distance learning is superior to what has been offered by others.  It is not only better it has gone on longer than most districts.  We are a charter committed to 205 days of learning and we did not shorten it at all.  Others are talking about should schools open for summer, and we are still open for the school year. 

I am also proud of our parents and students who have stuck it out with us and continued to learn and participate by way of virtual devices.

We should be proud of what we have accomplished and should feel a great deal of satisfaction in facing a problem and solving it so well.

I do not know what our opening on August 3rd will be like, but I want it to be a positive experience and a safe experience for all of us. We appreciate the time many of you took to answer our survey regarding returning to school.  We will continue to survey as the time gets closer.

I am also asking teachers to seek feedback on how you feel about the quality of our online learning. A survey regarding that will be coming to you as well.

Dear Promoting Class of 2020!

It is time to celebrate your biggest accomplishment as a middle school student, the awarding of your promotion certificate! We are confident that we can still participate and honor your special moment, while also following the public health and safety directive mandated by local and state officials in response to Covid-19. Below are some important guidelines, recommendations, and frequently asked questions to help with a smooth yet safe and joyous event:

Details for Drive-Thru Event: For the drive thru event parents/cars will enter on the MHS side of campus, through the parking lot and onto the basketball courts (through the large open gate). There will be a mark at the entrance for students to exit and begin walking alongside their car along the route. Cars and students will follow a specifically marked route (cones or tape) to various stations. Cars will be asked to have their students’ full name on their passenger side so that Mrs. Cerezo can read the names in the order that they appear in the line. Students/cars will continue to move along the marked route to the next station (keeping socially distant throughout) to pick up their certificate ( a staff member will locate their certificate as the student’s name is read aloud, then the student/car will continue on to the final station- the photo spot. A staff member will take the students photo along with a prop and then the student will enter back into their car and the car will turn right and exit out the front of the school by the front office.

Is safety protective gear required? We encourage you and your family to wear safety and protective gear if you feel more comfortable doing this. It is not required. Since we will continue to practice social distancing with one another, only the promoting student should be exiting the vehicle. Select staff members will be wearing safety gear.

How many cars/people can I invite? We recommend ONE to TWO cars per student. We understand that you want to celebrate with many of your loved ones, but please remember we are still required to follow social distancing guidelines and have two hours to award all graduates. Please also refrain from using any poppers or noise making machines (or honking) during the event so that everyone can hear their students’ name read aloud.

How will the drive through work for promoting student and guests? Promoting students should arrive in one vehicle riding as a passenger. They will be exiting to the curb and walk to the stage to receive their certificate. Guests in other cars should plan to meet ahead of time in order to drive directly behind one another in the lineup of cars. Please see the enclosed map route for a visual diagram.

What time should the graduate arrive? The event is anytime between 9AM and 11AM. We recommend graduates with the last name A-L to consider coming from 9AM—10AM and graduates last name M-Z to arrive from 10AM—11AM. This will help with easing traffic congestion and wait times. Cars should plan to come from Mae street turn onto Beverly, and then onto Holly to enter the MHS parking lot. Staff will help assist.

Will I be able to take photos with family and friends? We know how important photo memories are, especially at such a special occasion. Friends and family will safely have a close view of the promoters from the comfort of their vehicle. We do not recommend exiting for photos as we need to follow the safety guideline of limiting gatherings of 10 or fewer people in proximity. However, our photographer will be taking photos throughout the event and of each student. A link to all pictures taken during the event will be posted online, along with the DCS Promotion video.

What if I cannot attend? We are hoping for great support and participation but understand that you may not be able to partake in the celebration. Your certificate will be mailed to your home in the weeks following the event.

The Tracy Learning Center family knows that this is not what most of us had envisioned for you. Yet, during these uncertain times, one thing is for sure, we are not exiting without a grand celebration! Thank you for all your hard work and dedication.

Jorge has been one of the hardest working students in his class since the day I met him. Everyday, he came to school with a smile on his face and was ready to tackle any assignment that came his way. He has been an absolute joy to teach. I know he will do amazing things in this next part of his journey in high school. Congratulations, Jorge! I am so proud of you!

We are in a critical moment in our nation’s path towards racial justice and equality. Our hearts are broken at what we have seen and heard this past week. Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to the families of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and many other African Americans who have lost their lives in racially motivated tragedies in such a short amount of time.

Our goal at TLC is to treat everyone the same and with respect, regardless of the color of one’s skin. We promise to ensure the safety for all of our students and to show respect and concern for them and for their feelings. We must value the life of every single person in our school and in our country, and we must continue to provide opportunities for all people to succeed. Everyone must be a part of the solution. This includes teachers, students, parents, and community stakeholders. And to those students and teachers who represent these targeted populations, TLC stands with these groups for positive change.

What if 2020 isn’t canceled?

What if 2020 is the year we’ve been waiting for?

2019-2020 End of the Year Events 7/8th grade:

7/8 DCS Awards Ceremony:

This awards ceremony will be held virtually via Zoom on Tuesday 6/23 at 11:00am. Parents of students receiving an award will be emailed an invitation to the virtual awards ceremony. During this virtual event, students will find out which award they won.

Gold Cords:

Students who have earned the gold cord for promotion this year will be notified via Ms. Zaca’s google classroom the week before promotion. We will host a gold cord pickup for those students on Friday, June 26th between 8-9am at the DCS carline.

8th Grade Promotion Drive-Thru Event:

When: Saturday, June 27th, 2020 at 9:00-11:00 am (Note: we have changed the date of Promotion to Saturday so that working parents can attend)

Description: Cars with promoting 8th graders will drive through Tracy Learning Center along a carefully marked route. *A detailed map and letter with more specific details regarding the promotion will be mailed out in early June

We know she is going to achieve greatness. When she was in elementary school at Jacobson she ran for Vice President and won, then she ran for President and won that as well. She has accumulated so many awards over time I’m running out of space to display them all. Isabella, know that you are loved and we ack.nowledge all your achievements. You don’t need anyone’s validation to do what you want to do. Never settle for less even if it means losing friendships. I never got to teach Issac but I was his den leader when he came to our school. Issac is always respectful and has great sportsmanship in and out of the classroom. I have had the pleasure of having Jaevin while I was doing a long term sub position and for the remainder of the year as I stayed on in a supervisory capacity. The phrase “Still water runs deep” comes to mind when I think of Jaevin. He doesn’t want you to know how smart he is or what’s going on in his head. I am sure he will do something great when he decides on what he wants to do and dedicates himself to it.
