⅚ Social Studies with Mr. Bird:

During week 4, students wrapped up their geography and map skills unit with a quiz that mainly focused on identifying the continents and oceans of the world. The picture below is of a student identifying a continent or ocean for the class.

Our next lesson is about investigating the past! Students will understand how social scientists such as archaeologists, geographers, and historians interpret the past.

Please have students bring a small flashlight for Monday’s activity (small enough to keep in their backpacks all day). They will participate in a cave simulation on Monday, August 30, in which students will use their flashlights to go around the room with their partners and investigate artifacts from the past.

Later next week, students will begin learning about the early hominins and the capabilities that helped them survive.

D.A.R.E. lesson #3 is due on Monday, August 30. All D.A.R.E. lessons are due the following Monday. Students may bring D.A.R.E. donations on each Friday for the next several weeks. Please have students keep track of their points so they can write them in their D.A.R.E. books on D.A.R.E. day (Wednesday or Thursday depending on their period). The list of points is on the back of lesson #1.

⅞ Social Studies with Ms. Zaca:

Week 4 began with the introduction to Julius Caesar and the reforms he brought to the Roman Republic. With the assassination of Caesar and the civil war that ensued after, the Roman Republic officially came to an end, and the rise of the Roman Empire began! Students took notes on the rise and fall of Julius Caesar, and were introduced to many historical figures important to his story. On Wednesday, students were asked to write their own opinion on Julius Caeser’s assassination by answering the question: In your opinion, who were the real heroes/villians of this story?

Please make sure that your child has added themselves to the google classroom for social studies! Announcements for class are made on here, in addition to tutorial videos for their homework assignments, the calendar of events, and any notes taken during class are uploaded onto the website. Please have your child email me if they have not signed up yet so that they can receive the classroom code from me (if they do not have it in their agendas).

Math with Mrs. Zuniga:

Zuniga Homeroom: We are now practicing our operations for multidigit whole numbers. Next week we will still be practicing addition and subtraction for large numbers, but we will start to learn about multiplying large numbers.

Ferguson Homeroom: We took our quiz today (Friday) on fractions. Once all students have completed the quiz, we will begin to learn and review all operations of decimals and their relation to fractions.

Soto Homeroom: We have begun practicing adding and subtracting fractions as well as multiplying fractions. We will practice a bit more before diving into dividing fractions.

Williams Homeroom: Weare taking our quiz today (Friday) on fractions and integers. The next concept is exponents.

Math with Mrs. Rapp:

Pre-Algebra (Pink, Yellow, & Green): This last week we reviewed concepts that we have been working on and finished the week with a quiz. We will be picking up the pace in our curriculum overall moving forward to get the rigor of the class where I believe it should be. On Wednesday and Thursday all classes took an iReady Diagnostic test to assess where each student is at. We will take this three times throughout the year to make sure that we are hitting benchmarks and progressing in their understanding of grade level math, as well as the Pre-Algebra curriculum.

Algebra(Red): Unit 1 has flown by and this week we completed the unit and will be testing on Monday. We will be moving into Unit 2 and continuing with this fast pace as we go through the units that are review.

Language Arts with Ms. Rodieck:

All Homerooms: This week we did our I-Ready Diagnostic Assessments. Most students finished, some did not. Students are able to work on this at home, but we would appreciate parents NOT helping so we know what the students need to learn.

Zuniga’s HR learned about small poems from Valerie Worth and they wrote their own like Jack did in their class novel Love That Dog. Below are some poems.

Next week, we will review proper nouns and capitalization rules, continue to read our book, and work on revising and editing our writing.

Rodieck’s, Nijjar’s, and Ferguson’s HRs will also continue to read their class novel. We will also be reading some articles about the drought, reviewing spelling rules for making plurals, and revising and editing our writing.

Friday Humanities – All Class learned about the Seven Main Elements of art and practiced using them in their names. Here is one class’s notes on the board as an example of what we learned.

Important due dates:

Football Friday ( Staff vs Student Flag football game)- Friday, September 10th

As a reminder students should be bringing their PE clothes home every Friday, washing them over the weekend, and bringing back for class on Monday. Lastly, please remind your student to bring a separate water bottle for PE, as they do not have access to drinking fountains this year.

Life Management with Ms. Ferguson:

Here is a photo from ice cream making last Friday!

The students also had a kitchen safety scavenger hunt in the classroom this week! They had a lot of fun while learning about the importance of safety while cooking.

Art (Creative Expression) with Mrs. Aldrich:

Students created mixed media art that included collage, painting, drawing, found objects, and more!

PS: Please give students old magazines (preferably ones with plenty of pictures) to school for future projects!

⅚ Social Studies with Mr. Bird:

During week 2, students set up their interactive notebooks! They started by creating their table of contents (first four pages, front and back) and learning what geography is. Page 1 discusses the two basic types of geography: human and physical geography. The rest of the week was dedicated to learning our terms to know (pages 2-4).

For week 3, students will begin learning to identify the 7 continents of the world as well as our oceans. They will also continue refining their map skills by reviewing the cardinal and intermediate directions, as well as latitude and longitude.

If they haven’t already done so, please ensure students add our Google Classroom. The code is at the bottom of the syllabus that was sent home with students the first week of school. The Google Classroom will have more information about what we are doing each day in social studies and important dates.

First social studies quiz will be on August 24!

Lastly, D.A.R.E. homework is going to be due on Mondays to allow parents/guardians enough time to help their children and provide their signature.

⅞ Social Studies with Ms. Zaca:

Students took their first quiz this Friday! Grades will be updated this coming week to reflect their quiz scores. This past week students learned about the challenges of the Roman Republic. They learned about the external challenges through the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage over the ownership of the Mediterranean area (spoiler alert: Rome won!). They also learned about the internal challenges the Republic faced due to corrupt officials taking land and privileges away from the Plebeians. Next week we will begin to examine the rise of Julius Caesar and the decline of the Roman Republic.

Please make sure that your child has added themselves to the google classroom for social studies! Announcements for class are made on here, in addition to tutorial videos for their homework assignments, the calendar of events, and any notes taken during class are uploaded onto the website. Math with Mrs. Zuniga:

Zuniga Homeroom: We spent this week reviewing place value to prepare for our quiz this past Friday. Next week we will move into addition and subtraction of multi digit numbers.

Ferguson Homeroom: We have learned all four operations of fractions and will continue to practice operations of fractions before we take a quiz next Friday.

Soto Homeroom: We learned about LCM and GCF this week before starting to learn about adding and subtracting fractions. We will continue to practice next week until students are proficient in this concept.

Williams Homeroom: We practiced conversions of fractions, decimals, and percentages before moving into adding and subtracting fractions with positives and negatives. Next week we will continue to practice and master this concept before moving on to multiplying and dividing fractions.

Math with Mrs. Rapp:

Pre-Algebra(Pink, Yellow, & Green): This last week has been a busy week. We spent time revisiting integer rules and had a quiz on that as well. We then moved on to converting fractions to decimals and percents. This was a good section full of review and connecting concepts they have learned in previous years. Students are really grasping this concept. We were able to do an Escape Room activity that went well. Next week we will move in to Operations with Fractions.

Algebra(Red): Unit 1 has flown by and this week we took our third quiz. Next week we will finish the unit and end the week with our first Unit Test. Students in this class are impressing me daily with their understanding of Algebra and I am really looking forward to challenging them in the units to come.

Language Arts with Ms. Rodieck:

All Homerooms: We started reading our novel this week AND had our first bi-weekly quiz that includes spelling and vocabulary, questions from the novel, and other Language Arts concepts like nouns and capitalization rules. Quizzes will be passed back Monday so ask about them.

Next week, we will be doing I-Ready Diagnostic Assessments during class time and students need to bring headphones that will plug into the computer. Students can keep them in a plastic bag in their backpack for the week. Students will get their spelling and vocabulary words for the next two weeks on Monday, and even though we are taking a break from curriculum for a week, they will still need to learn the words for the following week. We will have a quiz on week 5

FYI – spelling and vocabulary is on a two week rotation with quizzes every other week starting week 3. On alternate weeks, we will be doing Humanities.

Language Arts with Mr. Harding:

Entering our fourth week of school, we have not only adjusted to routines, but can set expectations and plans for improvement. We begin reading our Pentathlon book, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park. We have done some research, made some art, and have a basic understanding of the setting of our novel.

During week 4, we will be testing most of the week. We will slow it down a bit, but keep the same routines.

I hope we are all excited to be back on campus together. The opportunity to teach and learn in person is not taken for granted.

Language Arts with Mrs. Soto:

During week 3, students continued to read the book, but more importantly we began setting up for a debate.

Next week will be a bit crazy with some I-Ready diagnostics going on Monday and Tuesday, but the rest of the week will be focused on the debate.

Math with Mrs. Zuniga:

Zuniga Homeroom: We spent this week learning about place value and rounding of whole numbers. We played games to familiarize ourselves with reading, writing, and understanding numbers and their places as well as their values. Next week we will begin to add and subtract multidigit numbers.

Ferguson Homeroom: We began fractions this week and we continue to practice adding and subtracting fractions into next week to master the concept rather than just know it. The students completed a scavenger hunt finding LCM and GCF of numbers which will help in their understanding of operations of fractions. (some photos below)

Soto Homeroom: We were able to complete our whole number operations review this week and the students are excited to move onto our main curriculum of fractions. The students will continue to review their whole number operations throughout the year as needed.

Williams Homeroom: The students were excited to continue moving through operations of integers and we learned about all four operations this week. We will continue to practice these four operations until students have mastered them but we began to look at conversions of fractions, decimals and percentages.

Math with Mrs. Rapp:

Pre-Algebra(Pink, Yellow, & Green): Last week we got an introduction to what they will be learning. We will continue in Unit 1 really focusing on Integers, fractions, and decimals. Operations with all of those will be critical for the units to come.

Algebra(Red): We jumped right into Unit 1 and this class is eager to learn. This course will be very fast paced like a HS Math class to ensure that we get through all of the curriculum and concepts to send them off to HS fully prepared for what is next.

Language Arts with Ms. Rodieck:

All Homerooms: During Week 2 we continued to learn routines and expectations for Language Arts and Humanities. Monday was spelling and vocabulary routines (see note below). Tuesday was our class notebooks and we talked about the difference between fiction and non-fiction. Wednesday was Writing Folders and Writers Workshop. Thursday was Stations – the big kids’ word for centers. This time is so I can meet with small groups to fill in some of the gaps from the last year and a half. Friday was What is Humanities? Here is a link to the slideshow we viewed to learn the answer to this question.

Next week we start reading our class novels. Students will also have their first quiz of the year. It will include spelling and vocabulary, questions from the novel, and language arts concepts that we are covering. Stations on Thursday will review what is on the test on Friday.

FYI – spelling and vocabulary will be on a two week rotation with quizzes every other week starting week 3. On alternate weeks, we will be doing Humanities.

NEW MORNING TARDY TIME: 8:15

Please enter the PCS carline BEFORE 8:15 to ensure your child is not tardy. Students will never be marked tardy due to the carline running late. If staff is no longer present, that means the carline is over and parents will have to walk their child to the office for a tardy slip.

DCS Weekly Highlights:

⅚ Social Studies with Mr. Bird:

Welcome back, Falcons! During the first week of school, students learned our classroom rules and expectations. We also started our first project! Students created a road map timeline highlighting five important events starting with their date of birth. Their timeline project was due on Friday. If your child has not added Google Classroom, please have them join the class using the class code provided in the syllabus.

The second week of school, students will practice their map skills! D.A.R.E. (drug abuse resistance education) will also begin and will take place one day a week during social studies and led by Officer Abercrombie.

⅞ Social Studies with Ms. Zaca:

Woohoo!! Welcome back, everyone!!! What a year it was last year!! It is such a great feeling seeing everyone back in the classroom again!

This year our theme for social studies is World History. We will begin learning about the Roman Republic and end this year with the Age of Exploration. Students will need to log into their google classrooms where important announcements, a calendar of upcoming due dates will be shared, tutorial videos for their homeworks will be posted, and vocabulary will be posted. If your child has not logged into it yet, please make sure they do so!

Each student was given a notebook to keep for social studies. This notebook is very important for our class! In this notebook is where notes and activities for our class will be glued into. That information will then be used to create our quizzes and tests. As I tell the students, if it is not in the notebook, it will not be on the test! My advice for students is to study their notebook at least 5 minutes every night to help them remember and recall the information.

Upcoming Dates:

All pages need to be glued into their notebooks by Monday, August 9th.

HW #2 page 5 due Friday, August 20th

Vocabulary and Early Rome Quiz Friday, August 20th

Zuniga Homeroom: We spent this week learning about the rules and expectations of the class. The students did some “getting to know each of you” activities and some math discussions based on “would you rather…” questions. Next week we will get a jump start on our curriculum with multidigit addition and subtraction.

Ferguson Homeroom: We got a jumpstart on our math curriculum on Tuesday and started to review multi digit operations before getting into fractions. Next week we will start to learn about operations of fractions before moving on to decimals.

Soto Homeroom: We did a quick review on place value and will start to look at multi digit addition and subtraction. Once we have those two operations down we will move onto multiplication and division next week.

Williams Homeroom: We hit the ground running with a quick decimal review before moving on to integers. We will end this week looking at addition and subtraction with integers. Next week we will start multiplication and division of integers.

Language Arts with Ms. Rodieck:

All Homerooms: This week we learned about the four main areas of ELA – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Students all did a quick spelling inventory so we can start differentiated spelling lists and HW next week. Next week, we will learn and practice stations (centers) and start Writers’ Workshop. We will dive into the Pentathlon theme of Water and explore drought as it pertains to California today. We will also learn what is Humanities and why it is a part of Language Arts.

FYI – spelling and vocabulary will be on a two week rotation with quizzes every other week starting week 3. On alternate weeks, we will be doing Humanities.

Language Arts with Mr. Harding:

Welcome back to campus, and to the 2021- 2022 school year. I am excited to have all of the students back on campus together.

For our first week of school, we reoriented ourselves with procedures, and each other. We completed our first writing assignment, and already have grades in the book.

Our pentathlon theme this year is Water: an Essential Resource. Our Pentathlon book this year is A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. Many of the students are eager to complete this book, as it is much more reasonable for middle school than last year’s theme and book. I look forward to beginning our first novel during the second week of school.

I hope we are all excited to be back on campus together. The opportunity to teach and learn in person is not taken for granted in these times.

Language Arts with Mrs. Soto:

Welcome back! Many of you may know me as Miss Greene, but over break I did get married and will now be going by Mrs. Soto.

All classes were assigned an essay prompt, in which they will be required to write an introduction paragraph along with a body and conclusion. This prompt the students will strictly be graded on the introduction paragraph and the other 2 paragraphs will help me see what I can help them with.

Next week we will be starting the Pentathlon book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park.

Looking forward to a wonderful year!

Life Management with Ms. Ferguson:

Welcome back! Some of you may know me as the former Technology teacher for 5-8, but this year I am teaching Life Management! In this enrichment course the students will be learning many life skills with a main focus on cooking and nutrition! This week we went over the rules and expectations of the classroom and we completed a short lesson on making existing recipes more healthy!

Next week our main focus will be on kitchen safety and cleanliness as well as measuring both solid and liquid foods.

Art (Creative Expression) with Ms. Losen/Mrs. Aldrich:

For our first week of art, students analyzed self portraits by many famous artists and designed their own self portraits with the aim of revealing their inner and outer selves!

Music with Mrs. Delgado:

This year Mr. Dougherty made the very difficult decision to accept a teaching position closer to where he lives (an hour away) in order to have more time with his family and less time commuting. He wanted all of his students to know that it was not an easy decision to make and he will miss all of you.

In the meantime, we have Mrs. Delgado filling in for our Music Enrichment class as a long term substitute. She has been working as a substitute teacher at the Tracy Learning Center for MANY years and already knows our school’s philosophies and expectations of classroom rigor. We hope to have a full time Music teacher with us in the near future, but are in very good hands with Mrs. Delgado!

NEW DCS and PCS Carline Morning Procedures –

Thank you for your patience during carline.  We continue to make adjustments to make carline more efficient while keeping everyone safe.

Effective today, if you have children in both DCS and PCS, you may drop them all off in the DCS front carline.  You will no longer need to go through both carlines in the morning.  DCS siblings will wait in the Primary lunch area with their siblings until 7:45.  At 7:45, a staff member will dismiss PCS students to walk to their classrooms.  This applies to morning carline only.  Thank you.

We have to remember it has been a year and a half since we’ve had a full carline, it will take time for us all to get into our routine, but it will get better, it always does!!!

Great First Day at TLC!!

Wow, what a great start to the new year.  It was exciting to see all our wonderful staff and students back on campus.

Carline -. We understand that carline was not as successful today as we had hoped. The first few days of carline are ALWAYS tough but trying to maintain COVID safety makes it even harder. We are reevaluating the procedures and will make adjustments.  Thank you for your patience and cooperation.  It will get better!

Safety on Campus–   We are happy to see all our students back in classrooms but we also want to make sure we are following state guidelines to keep our staff and students safe.  Students are doing a great job distancing.  Please be sure student’s come every day with a mask and of course if they exhibit any symptoms please do not send them to class.
