Discovery Charter School 5th-8th:

**Attention All Parents**

Announcement From Mrs. Prescott:

It is with mixed emotions that I must inform my Discovery students and families that this will be my last week here at the Tracy Learning Center. My family and I are planning a move back to the east coast. I have loved spending the last 5 ½ years at the Tracy Learning Center getting to know and care about all of you! I will miss watching our students learn and grow up together—from our Primary siblings, to our students now in high school. The Tracy Learning Center is an AMAZING trio of schools with an unparalleled staff! Your students are in the VERY best care and learning environment here at DCS!!!

Beginning October 4th, please contact Mrs. Cerezo (acerezo@tracylc.net) to address any of your DCS school questions. Ms. Welsby (gwelsby@tracylc.net) is one of our school psychologists and can be contacted for your student’s social emotional or mental health concerns. If you’re not sure who to reach out to for one of Discovery related needs, you can always call the front office (209-290-0511) and someone will direct you to the right person.

Thank you for your support and kind words over the years and know that I will be forever grateful to have been entrusted with the care and best interests of your students! Falcon Pride always!!!

~Mrs. Prescott~

***An Important Message from the Front Office***

Below you will find a link to our electronic parent website (AERIES). This database contains critical information about each DCS student and each student’s emergency contact information. This portion MUST BE FILLED OUT BY YOU. All data will be used to contact you in the event of an emergency. It is very important that you take the time to ensure we have all necessary information.

Use the following link https://tracylearningcenter.aeries.net/student and login in with the email and password you created when registering your student at the beginning of the school year. From there, navigate to the DATA CONFIRMATION PROCESS link. Once you enter the information, THE LAST STEP IS TO PRINT THE EMERGENCY CARD and turn it into the front office or to your child’s teacher.

If you believe you have already completed this process OR you need help completing this process please call 209-290-0511. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

⅚ Social Studies with Mr. Bird:

During week 8 students finished their final lesson of our unit on Early Humans and the Stone Age! They learned about hunter-gatherers in the Paleolithic Age and how the development of agriculture changed daily life in the Neolithic Age.

For week 9, students will show what they’ve learned during this unit by creating a comic strip about life in the Neolithic Age. They will show how life has changed over time from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic Age. The comic strip will be glued into their interactive notebook. Later in the week, students will participate in a fun activity in which they will compete with other groups to weave baskets out of strips of paper. The hunter-gatherer group whose basket holds the most weight wins!

Early humans and the stone age unit test is planned for October 8. Students should be studying their notebooks and worksheets in the meantime.

If there is extra time this week, students will be allowed to work on their D.A.R.E. songs. The next D.A.R.E. donation day is Friday, October 1. Please contact me at dbird@tracylc.net if it’s a large donation so I can have students from leadership assist at carline.

⅞ Social Studies with Ms. Zaca:

We have finally reached the end of our unit! This week students wrapped up ancient Rome and began studying for the Unit test. The unit test will be next Wednesday. Their cover page in their notebook on page 4 is due Wednesday also. There will be a notebook check too that day.

Please make sure that your child has added themselves to the google classroom for social studies! Announcements for class are made on here, in addition to tutorial videos for their homework assignments, the calendar of events, and any notes taken during class are uploaded onto the website. Please have your child email me if they have not signed up yet so that they can receive the classroom code from me (if they do not have it in their agendas).

Math with Ms. Saenz:

Hello Parents,

As I wrap up my 3rd week as your child’s new math teacher, I have been busy getting to know your student(s) and creating classroom procedures and policies. I also want to thank all of the students and parents for their patience. I know some are eager to get the ball rolling with homework. I promise at the start of October it will be more productive.

This week, we worked on organizing our math notebook. The notebook will contain notes, resource pages, and activity sheets. The idea of the notebook is for students to use it as a reference for their classwork, homework or study guide. It’s important your child has their notebook with them everyday and keeps it organized. We also started our lesson on Fractions.

Classroom behavior has improved this week. Students are being respectful of each other, not talking over me, and helping maintain the classroom clean.

Thank you

Math with Mrs. Zuniga:

Zuniga Homeroom: We are continuing our lesson on multiplying by 2 digits and next week will be powers of ten. I hope to be starting division by the first week of October.

Ferguson Homeroom: Students did great on their decimal quiz. Our next concept this week was problems involving percentages which students are needing tons of practice with. We will continue the beginning of next week before moving on.

Soto Homeroom: We will be taking our fraction unit test next Friday to finish up fractions. Next week will be spent reviewing for our fraction test.

Williams Homeroom: Students reviewed exponents, squares, cubes and roots this week. They will be taking a short quiz on these concepts before moving on to scientific notation next week.

Math with Mrs. Rapp:

Pre-Algebra (Pink, Yellow, & Green): During week 8 we did a little bit of practice with Exponents and then moved into 1-6 Perfect Squares/Cubes. Students were familiar with squares and cubes, so we ended the week with a review.

Algebra(Red): Throughout week 8 we continued in Unit 2: Multi-Step Equations and Inequalities. Students took a quiz and we ended the week on an easier note with some number sense activities.

Language Arts with Ms. Rodieck:

All Homerooms: Just want to remind that students need to be carrying small inexpensive headphones or earbuds (that plug into the computer) to use when we are doing I-Ready. Students also need to be carrying a book in their backpack that they can pull out and read. Book Reports will be due Wednesday, October 29, 2021.

Zuniga’s HR continued to read Love That Dog. Next week, we will finish reading our current novels. We will also be looking at different types of sentences before we start looking at subjects and predicates.

Rodieck’s, Nijjar’s, and Ferguson’s HRs will finish A Long Walk to Water and learn about themes in the book. The following week they will complete a final project about the book to be shared in class. Subject and Predicate and Diagramming are coming soon.

Language Arts with Mr. Harding:

All classes have finished reading A Long Walk to Water. We will complete an exam, write an essay, and complete a group visual composition . The need for effective student notes will be demonstrated in this process.

We will use iReady next week to reinforce skills.

Language Arts with Mrs. Soto

This week we focused on working on their essays. This consisted of a peer review and revisions. Along with their essays they are continuing to read the book quickly and are set to finish it next week.

Students should look forward to a final project that is associated with the book and many other final assignments to go along with the plot and themes of A Long Walk to Water.

Discovery 5-8th Physical Education Department:

It is week one of our new units, we have been working on basic skills and will move on to lead up games next week.

Coach Levand is in ultimate frisbee, and ultimate kanjam

Coach Penirian is in eclipse ball and soft tennis

Coach Williams is in soccer

Life Management with Ms. Ferguson:

This week in Life Management the students presented the menu projects that they created and made pancakes on Friday! Next week we are diving into nutrition and how to read nutrition labels.

Here are some pictures from pancake making, they did an awesome job!

Art (Creative Expression) with Mrs. Aldrich:

Students played with opposites and relationships and created Dual Art projects this week!

SENIOR INFO – Class of 2022

Dear Parents of the Senior Class of 2022, Thank you for your patience as information regarding college and specific dates and deadlines have been released to us much later than usual. Counselors were in the Senior English classes this week discussing Senior year dates and deadlines and the general overview of college and post high school plans.  Below is the senior presentation and the senior packet of information to help you with planning for the year.
Best of luck Class of 2022 parents!

Delta College is hosting their annual College Night with virtual College Fair this Monday, September 27th at 5:30pm. This virtual event is great for students and families wanting to research colleges and specific resources that Delta College offers.  Attached is the flyer with the zoom and registration links.

ATHLETICS

It’s hard to believe that we are already half way through the Fall Athletics Season! While COVID is still in the forefront of how we operate, some restrictions have been lifted for indoor sports (while others remain firmly in place). We are now able to allow spectators at all athletic events, but masks are required to be worn indoors at all times, which would include any volleyball and basketball events. Fans that do not wish to follow that expectation (vaccinated or not) will not be allowed into the gyms. We have done a great job over the last year and a half following these guidelines, and I know we all anticipate the day it’s no longer required!

Looking to be a high school coach? Often times parents inquire as to how they can get into coaching… Here are your 2 main “go to” platforms: EdJoin.org and CIFSJS.org You can go to both of those links to find available coaching positions throughout the state of California, including here at MHS, when spots are available. Being a high school coach includes much more than just an understanding of the game. One must work with facilities/equipment/enrollment/circumstances provided school by school, in addition to having a strong understanding of NFHS and CIF Section/State bylaws. Athletics is an extension of the classroom, of which our participants are students first, athletes second.

Parents often find themselves in a challenging role of separating themselves from “Parent” and “Parent Coach”. I would strongly encourage all parents to check out these courses available from NFHS Learn: https://nfhslearn.com/home/parents

PARENTS & ATHLETES: This should go without saying, however, here we are. Any student-athletes found to be participating in (or associated with) vandalism to community/school property and otherwise can plan to be removed from their current team for the duration of the season, as well as potential to be removed from the Athletics program as a whole for the duration of the school year. Such behaviors will not be tolerated and we expect our students to represent with class, taking pride in not only our own facilities, but respecting those of which we travel to.

Looking for schedules? In-Season sports will always have their schedules posted and current at both MHSFalcons.com and MaxPreps.com

Lastly, a huge thank you to all of the parents and community members that have volunteered their time to help out at athletic events, from admissions gate and chain gang, to announcing and snack bar. These events benefit greatly from your involvement and we appreciate you!

LUNCH: Ordering lunch is slightly different this year. All students should have a lunch account to pay for lunches. To register, go to https://www.mymealtime.com/ and create an account. You must choose/type in your specific school (Millennium High School) and you will need your student school I.D. number. If you have any difficulties creating an account online, money can still be added to your account by either cash, check, or debit card. You can drop off payment in the lunch dropbox that is located in the main office. We are still in the process of adding new students to our mealtime system and hope to have it completed next week.

Lunch is ordered the day before it is delivered to class. All students should order their lunch during 3rd period/HUB time. The Google Classroom code is SEUNSOU. Applications for Free & Reduced meals must be completed and turned in every year. You can apply on the website.

TLC Charter Chatter

News, Information, and Updates for Primary, Discovery, and Millennium Charter Schools

A Message from our CEO, Carolyn Woods

Homecoming week always brings such excitement and joy and this year certainly did not disappoint! From the daily spirit days to the powder puff game to the parade, homecoming game, and seeing so many of our alumni return, this week was filled with Falcon Pride! It is wonderful to see the whole school come together to celebrate what makes the Tracy Learning Center special. Thank you to everyone who donated items for the floats, helped with the float building, and attended the football games and parade. Way to go Falcons!!

**************************************

Update on crossing guards: We have contracted for two crossing guards to monitor the corner of Mae and Beverly. The crossing guard company is working hard to fill our request. In the meantime, please continue to stop at the four-way stop, and watch for students crossing, particularly in the mornings. Student safety is our #1 concern.

***************************************

The Dangers of Social Media: Last week schools across the country were affected by the “Devious Lick” TicToK trend, which involves students breaking, taking, and vandalizing items on school campuses. Unfortunately, TLC was not immune to this “challenge.” Our high school boy’s restroom was vandalized, as was the Discovery boy’s restroom, and items were taken from Discovery classrooms. This is unacceptable, we expect more from our students. Please help partner with us in discussing the dangers of social media with your students. This so-called challenge can lead to unexpected costs staining an already tight budget. It can also turn into a serious police matter. We have made our students aware that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. If anyone has any information or would like to report an occurrence of vandalism or theft, they can email me at cwoods@tracylc.net. Thank you.

⅚ Social Studies with Mr. Bird:

Due to the nest challenge and the half day for homecoming, we had a change of plans during week 7. Students worked on a study guide and reviewed for their quiz on the early humans. Depending on their period, they had the quiz on Wednesday or Thursday.

During week 8, students will begin their lesson on hunter-gatherers. They will learn about the different eras of the Stone Age (paleolithic and neolithic) and focus on the development of agriculture. The essential question for the lesson is “How did the development of agriculture change daily life in the Neolithic Age?”

D.A.R.E. lesson #6 is due on Monday. Please be sure to look over and sign the lesson once they have completed it.

The next D.A.R.E. donation day is Friday, September 24.

⅞ Social Studies with Ms. Zaca:

With this week, we dived into the origins and rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire. Students began the week note taking a general overview of the relationship between Romans and Christians. We completed page 27 in our notebooks writing about the persecution of Christians, the eventual toleration and conversion of the Roman Empire to a Christendom, and why so many found Christianity appealing despite many being persecuted.

Next week we will explore the fall of the Roman Empire and what led to its decline of power. Students will have a quiz on pages 28 and 29 on Wednesday.

Please make sure that your child has added themselves to the google classroom for social studies! Announcements for class are made on here, in addition to tutorial videos for their homework assignments, the calendar of events, and any notes taken during class are uploaded onto the website. Math with Ms. Saenz:

This week we continued reviewing arithmetic facts, took notes in our interactive notebooks, and finished our review with a test (some classes still need to test).

Next week, we will start with fractions.

Please have your student bring a spiral, 1-subject notebook on Monday. I will also have some extra notebooks. Students will use the notebook to take notes and paste resource pages.

We are continuing to practice each and everyday classroom etiquette. Parents, please have a conversation with your child about proper classroom behavior. I am having to stop my lessons more times than I would like to due to excessive talking, behavior issues or simply not focusing.

Thank you

Math with Mrs. Zuniga:

Zuniga Homeroom: We are still multiplying by 2 digits this week, but will need to continue practicing. I recommend parents work with your students at home to master multiplication fact fluency.

Ferguson Homeroom: Students took their decimal quiz this week after spending the week reviewing. Next week, we will begin talking about percents and conversions between percents, decimals, and fractions.

Soto Homeroom: Students took their fraction quiz last Friday, but the scores were not where we wanted them to be. We moved into dividing fractions, but next week we will go back to review fractions from the beginning.

Williams Homeroom: We practiced exponents and moved into learning about squares and square roots. Next week we will talk about cubes and cube roots with some practice and a small quiz on exponents and squares, cubes and roots.

Math with Mrs. Rapp:

Pre-Algebra (Pink, Yellow, & Green): During week 7 we worked on Exponents. We learned how to take an expanded multiplication expression and put it into an exponential expression and then evaluate. We will continue practicing this next week as well as learning about zero and negative exponents. Then move on in to 1-6 Perfect Squares/Cubes.

Algebra(Red): Throughout week 7 we continued in Unit 2: Multi-Step Equations and Inequalities. We have picked up the pace and will continue and students are doing great. We will be taking a quiz early next week.

Language Arts with Ms. Rodieck:

All Homerooms: Students need to also carry headphones in their backpacks for the times we do I-ready in the classroom. Inexpensive ones that can plug into the computers are the best.

Students will also get their Trimester One Book Report Assignment on Week 8 and it will be due Week 12 – due dates will be put in their agendas. Students should always have a book in their backpack to pull out in any class to read.

Zuniga’s HR continued to read Love That Dog. Next week, we will continue to read Love That Dog, Write some poetry based on the novel, and write a personal narrative using a graphic organizer.

Rodieck’s, Nijjar’s, and Ferguson’s HRs continued to read A Long Walk to Water and wrote a personal narrative about the one thing we’d save if we had to flee our homes. Next week we will continue with personal narratives, A Long Walk to Water, and verbs. Subject and Predicate and Diagramming are coming soon.

Language Arts with Mr. Harding:

All classes continue reading A Long Walk to Water. As we approach the midpoint of the book, the themes are revealing themselves and the narrative is beginning to have meaning. Our main focus is note taking and being able to recall then verify events from the text. Students will be able to use their notes for any quiz or exam, but not the book.

We will begin iReady online practice in the classroom next week. All students should carry a reliable but cheap set of earbuds in their backpack. When we use the program, earphones are required.

Life Management with Ms. Ferguson:

During this Homecoming week the students learned the basics of menu planning and how restaurants come up with their menu. This was followed by students creating their own digital menu for a restaurant of their creation.

Art (Creative Expression) with Mrs. Aldrich:

Students learned about Positive and Negative Space in art and created their own projects to reflect the principles. Below are some student examples:

A Message from our CEO, Carolyn Woods

  • In the event of a COVID exposure, close contacts will be notified. A close contact, as defined by the CDC, is someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person (laboratory-confirmed or a clinically compatible illness) for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period
  • A “modified 10-day quarantine” recommendation for those who were determined to be in close contact and are unvaccinated will be issued. During a modified quarantine, students may continue to attend school IF they meet all of the following requirements:
    • i. Are asymptomatic;
    • ii. Continue to appropriately mask, as required;
    • iii. Undergo at least twice weekly testing during quarantine; and
    • iv. Continue to quarantine for all extracurricular activities at school, including sports, and activities within the community setting.
  • Fully vaccinated individuals, including students, if asymptomatic, can refrain from quarantine following a known exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19. In other words, fully vaccinated individuals are exempt from the modified quarantine recommendation.
  • While in quarantine, we do not want students to miss out on any aspect of their education. If your student is out due to a COVID-19 quarantine, please make sure to request work assignments from your student’s teachers. The office staff can help assist with the request.

As always, we sincerely thank you for your support.

⅚ Social Studies with Mr. Bird:

This week students wrapped up their lessons on the early humans by studying four hominin groups: Homo habilis (Handy Man), Homo erectus (Upright Man), Homo neanderthalensis (Neanderthal Man), and Homo sapiens (Wise Man). They learned about their capabilities that helped them survive such as using fire, stronger bones, standing on two feets, advanced tools, and more. To bring our lesson to life, students conducted brief act-it-outs to show the capabilities these early hominins had (see pictures below).

Monday, September 13, students will create a poster highlighting one of the hominin groups and their characteristics. They will also be completing a study guide to help prepare for the upcoming quiz. Tuesday, September 14, students will have a quiz on the early hominins. We’ll then start our next lesson on hunters and gatherers.

D.A.R.E. lesson #5 is due on Monday. Please be sure to look over and sign the lesson once they have completed it. The information to answer questions is on the backside of the lesson.

The next D.A.R.E. donation day is next Friday, September 17. Students need to be sure they are tracking their donation points and have me sign it for them.

Please have your child email me if they have not signed up yet so that they can receive the classroom code from me (if they do not have it in their agendas).

Math with Ms. Saenz:

Hello parents! I’m Ms. Saenz, the new 5th and 6th grade math teacher. This week, we spent time getting to know each other. Students were asked to fill a paper brown bag with 3 items from home that showcase their likes, hobbies, and interests. I learned a lot about each student. We also spent class time reviewing long division, multi-digit multiplication, addition, and subtraction. Finally, we practice classroom procedures and policies. We will continue to practice each and everyday classroom etiquette.

*Parents, please have your student bring a spiral, 1-subject notebook on Monday. Students will use the notebook to take notes and paste resource pages.

*On Monday, I will send home a Meet the Teacher letter. After reviewing it with your child, please sign the attached signature page and send it with your student the next day.

I am excited for the new school year!

Math with Mrs. Zuniga:

Zuniga Homeroom: We began multiplying by 2 digits this week, but will need to continue practicing. I recommend parents work with your students at home to master multiplication fact fluency.

Ferguson Homeroom: Students did great learning the operations of decimals this week. We will continue to practice dividing decimals into next week and review for a quiz on Friday.

Soto Homeroom: We have our fraction quiz this week just focusing on adding, subtracting, and multiplying. Most students are very proficient in these concepts however, I do recommend having students practice at home to ensure mastery. Fractions are the basic foundation for Algebra in high school.

Williams Homeroom: We have reviewed fractions and integers this last week and added an introduction to exponents. We will continue to practice our exponent lessons next week.

Math with Mrs. Rapp:

Pre-Algebra (Pink, Yellow, & Green): During week 6 we worked on mastering Fraction Operations and ended the week with a quiz. Moving into next week we will be working on Exponents and Perfect Squares/Cubes.

Algebra(Red): Throughout week 6 we started Unit 2: Multi-Step Equations and Inequalities. We tackled through the first four sections and ended the week with a quiz. This rigorous pace will continue throughout this trimester as we hit a lot of topics that are partially review for this group.

Language Arts with Ms. Rodieck:

All Homerooms: We finished the writing process by typing and submitting a written assignment on Google Classroom this week. Students will now do two or three writing assignments a month and pick one to submit at the end of the month.

Students need to also carry headphones in their backpacks for the times we do I-ready in the classroom. Inexpensive ones that can plug into the computers are the best.

Zuniga’s HR continued to read Love That Dog. We had a quick introduction to verbs and submitted a written assignment. Next week, we will continue to read Love That Dog, Write some poetry based on the novel, and have our third quiz of the year.

Rodieck’s, Nijjar’s, and Ferguson’s HRs continued to read A Long Walk to Water and learned about different types of conflict in literature. We also talked about contrast seen between different parts of the novel. Next week, we will review verbs, continue reading, and will have our third quiz of the year.

Football Friday – Staff vs Student Flag football game

The students put up a great battle on the field, but the teachers kept their seven year winning streak alive. The final score was 21-7.

Life Management with Ms. Ferguson:

During this short week the students worked on reading recipes and learning the importance of reading ALL of the instructions on the recipes! We also practiced doubling or halving recipes. The students ended their week by making scrambled eggs! It was a fun and simple cooking day, check out the pictures below 🙂

Art (Creative Expression) with Mrs. Aldrich:

Students created “soul” vision boards, which are vision boards filled with inspiration and joy and things that bring us meaning, rather than solely future aspirations. Students shared their vision boards with the entire class! Below are some student examples:

TLC Charter Chatter

News, Information, and Updates for Primary, Discovery, and Millennium Charter Schools

A Message from our CEO, Carolyn Woods

Dear Parents, guardians, staff, and students,

As we begin to embark on our second month of school, I would like to share some statistics with you regarding COVID-19 at TLC and update you on the CDC and CDPH guidelines for K-12 schools.

During the month of August, we had very few reported positive COVID-19 cases among students (13 school-wide) and zero cases among staff members. Statistically, among students, that case rate is 0.01 percent. When we were notified of a positive case, we followed the guidelines in place at the time, which included filling out a case report and sending it to the California Department of Public Health, who would then make the determination if any contact tracing was necessary. Students who tested positive were notified of the quarantine requirements and were told when they could return to school. We continued to follow all other safety requirements, such as masking indoors, sanitizing classrooms and keeping distance when feasible. For each case, we were in close contact with the public health nurse at the CDPH.

Although we feel very confident in our procedures and safety measures in place, a new month brings new updates to the CDC and CDPH guidelines for K-12 school settings. Moving forward, we will adhere to the following recommendations:

  • when we are notified of a positive COVID-19 case among students or staff, we will continue to fill out the case report and send it to the CDPH
  • we will notify families when a student has been exposed via phone call and/or email
  • if a potential exposure occurs on campus, we will follow the recommended guidelines and notify students who were determined to be close contacts of the positive staff member or student of the “modified quarantine” requirements as stated in the K-12 School Guidance, which were updated by the CDPH on September 1, 2021
  • if a cluster or multiple cases occur, we will take the necessary precautions, which may include closing a classroom, isolating a homeroom, or closing a school for a period of quarantine

You may read the updated CDPH guidelines in full at the following link:

https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/K-12-Guidance-2021-22-School-Year.aspx

There is also a FAQ page with great information for K-12 schools, you may find it here:

https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/Schools-FAQ.aspx

Thank you for your cooperation and continued support as we continue to navigate through these unprecedented times.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Woods

⅚ Social Studies with Mr. Bird:

Before starting our next unit on Early Humans and the Stone Age, students spent two days understanding how social scientists interpret the past. After reading about archaeologists, geographers, and historians, students participated in a cave simulation activity using flashlights to roam around the room with their partners analyzing various paintings and artifacts. The pictures below are of this activity:

After our lesson on investigating the past, students started their next unit: Early Humans and the Stone Age. For the first lesson, they will focus on our essential question: What capabilities helped early hominins survive? We first discussed their favorite superheroes and their capabilities that are beyond our own. This conversation helped us think about early hominins and how each group developed capabilities that gave them survival advantages over earlier hominin groups.

Friday’s homework assignment was given to students this week (depending on the period they received it Wednesday or Thursday) and examines the hominin group homo habilis, or Handy Man. The reading passage is posted to Google Classroom (class code ymxobbo) and I posted links to a video that shows students how to complete the assignment. Email me with questions! The homework is due Tuesday.

This coming week, students will analyze the remaining hominin groups we are focusing on before we complete a processing assignment in which students will create a poster on a specific hominin group.

D.A.R.E. lesson #4 is due on Tuesday. Please be sure to look over and sign the lesson once they have completed it. The information to answer questions is on the backside of the lesson.

The next D.A.R.E. donation day is next Friday, September 10. Students need to be sure they are tracking their donation points and have me sign it for them.

⅞ Social Studies with Ms. Zaca:

Students started and finished the week off by learning about the good AND bad emperors of Rome! From Caligula, to Nero, to Trajan, students were introduced to these rulers, their impact on Rome, and the qualities that they shared with each other and were special to their own. Students also answered the exit ticket this week on whether or not the qualities they had were shared by current leaders of the world.

Math with Mrs. Zuniga:

Zuniga Homeroom: We have started our multiplication lessons with 2 and 3 digit numbers by 1 digit. After enough practice for all students we will move on to multiplication of 2 digit by 2 digits.

Ferguson Homeroom: Students did well overall with their fraction quiz getting a B+ class average. Our next concept to learn is decimals and their relationship to fractions before starting adding and subtracting.

Soto Homeroom: We have been practicing operations of fractions minus division. Our plan is to keep practicing this week to ensure all students have an understanding of the concept before moving on to division of fractions next week.

Williams Homeroom: We took our fraction and integer quiz last Friday however did not do so well. We will continue to review and work on integers and fractions so students have a better understanding and basic foundation of pre-algebra in order to succeed in the future lessons.

Math with Mrs. Rapp:

Pre-Algebra (Pink, Yellow, & Green): This last week we reviewed concepts that we have been working on and moved on with Adding & Subtracting Fractions. Each class is moving at a slightly different pace and I am pleased with the progress each class has made. This coming week we will be working on Multiplying & Dividing Fractions followed by a quiz.

Algebra(Red): We have completed Unit 1 with a 90% average as a class. This group is ready to pick up the pace and on Tuesday that is exactly what we will be doing. We are starting Unit 2: Multi-Step Equations and Inequalities

Language Arts with Ms. Rodieck:

All Homerooms: The Friday Asynchronous assignment was a review of the writing process – drafting, revising, and editing – using just one sentence. Week Six Writing Wednesday will be procedures on typing and submitting a written assignment. It will be the first final writing assignment grade in the grade books.

Zuniga’s HR reviewed capitalizing proper nouns and had our second quiz of the year. Overall, students did better on the second quiz as they are adjusting to the routines. We will continue to read Love That Dog.

Rodieck’s, Nijjar’s, and Ferguson’s HRs continued to read A Long Walk to Water and learned about some of the differences between African groups. These classes also had their second quiz of the year and overall scores were better. We will continue to read our novel and do some close reading of non-fiction articles.

Important due dates:

Football Friday ( Staff vs Student Flag football game)- Friday, September 10th

As a reminder students should be bringing their PE clothes home every Friday, washing them over the weekend, and bringing back for class on Monday. Lastly, please remind your student to bring a separate water bottle for PE, as they do not have access to drinking fountains this year.

Life Management with Ms. Ferguson:

Over the last few weeks the students have learned about measuring, baking, and the history of microwaves and how they work. This week each class made the same recipe twice, one went into the oven and the other was put in the microwave. They were able to taste the difference and see the difference in how their food was made both ways! Here are a few photos, they made pull apart cinnamon bread:

Art (Creative Expression) with Mrs. Aldrich:

Students finished their mixed media art that included collage, painting, drawing, found objects, and more! They also moved on to Surrealism and began creating odd, dreamlike pieces.

PS: Please give students old magazines (preferably ones with plenty of pictures) to school for future projects!
