A Message from our CEO, Carolyn Woods

ATTENTION 8th GRADE STUDENTS and FAMILIES!!!

It is open enrollment time for Millennium High School! Applications are now available online at www.tracylc.net.

IMPORTANT– current Discovery 8th graders are not automatically accepted to Millennium, you must apply.

Why choose Millennium? Here are a few testimonials from some of our past and current MHS students:

Some of the highlights of this school are the variety of sports, extracurricular activities, mandatory internships for seniors, and different learning paths! As a student, the fact that MHS has different learning paths for students that are advanced or students who are falling behind is very helpful. MHS is very different from other school districts because there are more opportunities here.

The highlights and benefits that separate MHS from other schools is planning for the future. MHS keeps you on track to graduate and move further into college which other schools don’t do as well. Another benefit of MHS is the cleaner and safer environment that other schools do not have. A benefit is that you get to experience an internship so when you get a real job it’s not all new. The teachers are also more engaged with the students since the student count is lower, so the students can communicate with the teachers more efficiently.

I came to MHS because I used to have friends that went here. They were always preaching about MHS and the education here. When I came, I realized how different the MHS teaching style was compared to Kimball. While you have to go the extra mile by getting 200 community service hours and doing college prep classes, you gain more experience and are getting prepared for life after high school. You can also take college classes for free, if you pass, you can get a boosted GPA and more credits. I also like the athletics program. Although the amount of teams available is small, there is a more hands-on and one on one coaching style. With a smaller team, new players can understand and learn the game better because there are not as many people.

My parents wanted me to come to MHS. They thought that it would be a good opportunity for me. I didn’t want to come here at first but after being here for a couple of months I have changed my mind. There are many benefits that you can get here at MHS. This school offers the senior internship, which looks good on a college application and gives you working experience. They also pay for your college classes which can benefit you when you actually go into college. They also have Fast Track which allows you to either retake a class or move up another one. These are just some benefits and that’s why I like going here because it will help me get ahead and the teachers actually care if you are doing good or not.

MHS brings the best in education, where else can you find a school that will pay for your first two years in college or makes you take on an internship. Along with that we are very hands-on so we understand what we are learning. Finally, with small class sizes, teachers can feel more connected with us and it is easier to ask for help. With all of that, we stand out from all the other schools even from other cities.

Go online and apply now!

Thank you,

Mrs. Woods

Jog-a-Thon

ATTENTION PCS FAMILIES!!!

We are using a new pledging system through an online company called Pledgestar for the Jog-A-Thon this year, which takes place on November 10th. Your child/children should have brought home an orange flyer with all the information needed to register them and add potential donors to their account. The process to register is quick and makes it easy to reach out to friends and family. Please know that in order for your child to receive donations/pledges you must register for an account and add them as a jogger. If you have children in both PCS and DCS, you must register for both schools separately. If you did not receive the flyer click HERE to view it. If you have any questions please email Coach Knaus at gknaus@tracylc.net. Pledgestar donations will be accepted through December 2, 2022.

PCS Celebrates Diwali!

This week PCS staff celebrated Diwali. Students enjoyed learning all about Diwali and the staff enjoyed some Indian cuisine! It was a fantastic experience for all!

Special Education

Some people will do anything to avoid driving if their last experience was a disaster. Others will avoid certain social gatherings because they never have anything to say. Others will not apply for a promotion because they just know they’ll never get selected. Our past experiences influence our behavior, and when those experiences have been consistently negative, we can adopt what has been described as learned helplessness.

Learned helplessness is a condition with which a person suffers from a sense of powerlessness, feeling as though they will fail before they even try. Unfortunately, this behavior is quite common in childhood. Signs of learned helplessness manifest in various ways.

IMPORTANT

As required by California law (Health and Safety Code 120325 – 120375), parents need to provide proof of a Tdap vaccine (pertussis – Whooping Cough Booster) for all students entering the 7th grade. Documentation must state the shot was given on or after their 7th birthday. This means ALL current 7th graders must get up to date NOW.

It is important that you begin now, to ensure your child gets his/her required vaccination prior to school re-opening on August 1, 2022. We suggest you call and arrange this vaccine appointment asap.

Getting them up to date now, will not only protect them against Pertussis but also ensure class placement and prevent exclusion from school once students return to campus.

Remember to ask your physician about other vaccines your child may need, and bring your child’s yellow immunization card to the visit. Please return a copy of ALL up-to-date immunizations to school prior to the beginning of the next year school year.

For questions, please call your primary physician today or call the San Joaquin County Public Health Services Program, at (209) 468-3481.

Students will not be allowed to attend campus classes without his/her completion of all school-required vaccines/immunizations.

Athletic Director Corner

The Fall Season for Millennium Athletics is coming to a close and I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight some of our accomplishments!

First up, we were able to field THREE Volleyball teams this fall for the second time in school history! When you want to build a program, it starts with having healthy participation numbers! The girls improved throughout the year, and that is the true measure of success, not wins and losses.

Football has their final home game this Friday at Tracy High. It will be an action packed Friday night, with the PCS Mini-Cheer Camp Falcons and our very own, award-winning Millennium Band performing at halftime! In addition, the debut of the Millennium Trebuchet from Mr. Copass and our Physics Department will make its first t-shirt launch between the first and second quarter!

Senior night festivities will begin at 630pm – our Football and Cross Country Seniors will be honored on the field with their parents before the game.

Our football program has found plenty of playing time for our young players, and they will be back next year to continue to improve. I say it time and time again, but no sport is as physically and mentally challenging as football. We are looking forward to an off season of weight training and 7 on 7 this Summer to prepare us for next year!

All teams have a great chance at finishing in the top 5 this year – and there are over 130 schools in the Sac-Joaquin Section! Remember, these are STUDENT-ATHLETES, and we love it that our students achieve in the classroom and on the athletic fields!

After the first quarter grading period ended, unfortunately, some athletes had to be removed from teams. In High School, all student athletes must maintain a 2.0 GPA and no F’s to remain or join their teams. This year, we lost 4 student athletes to grades, which is the least we have ever lost! Three students improved their grades and were able to join their teams as well. So this Fall, our Athletic Department endured a net loss of just one student athlete!

As the Fall season ends, the Winter season is beginning! Conditioning for our Soccer and Basketball teams are in full swing! Mandatory practice and tryouts will begin on November 1st. Athletes who are still on a fall team will be able to join their winter sports team once their season ends. Remember, all athletes must be registered on AthleticClearance.com and have a current sports physical before they participate in any school athletic conditioning, practice or game.

Other sports have begun to prepare for their seasons as well. Baseball and Track and Field will start weight training in November. If you are interested in joining, please contact me or your coaches for more details.

TO REGISTER FOR SPORTS, here is a step by step guide to follow – you can always email me with questions at areyes@tracylc.net

First – Go to athleticclearance.com Complete ALL forms on this website.

Second – Click on this link to Download a copy of the Sports Physical

Third – Take the forms from step 2 to your doctor to have them filled out.

Fourth and Final Step – Take a picture of the completed sports physical form and attach it on your athletic clearance!

Announcement regard today’s gas leak

Good Morning TLC families,

We wanted to let you know we had a brief interruption this morning for our Primary and Discovery classes.  Our Facilities  Director, George Hepner smelled gas at the main valve for our PCS/DCS building this morning and promptly shut off the main valve. We had our students and teachers move to the field.

PG&E was called out to check the entire campus for any other leaks as well as going into every classroom with a gas detector to ensure there were no other issues.

The whole process lasted about 25min and once we were given the all clear we allowed our students back to their classrooms.

The preparedness of students and teachers for such a situation was evident and we are so proud of how organized this incident was.  Great job TLC!!

A Message from our CEO, Carolyn Woods

Dear parents, guardians, and families of the Tracy Learning Center,

I’d like to bring attention to and remind you of our attendance policy. We take attendance very seriously as chronic absenteeism can have lasting effects on a child’s educational experience. Our school handbooks state the following:

ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES

All absences must be called to the office on the day of absence to (209) 290-0511 or emailed to Kay Fagundes at kfagundes@tracylc.net or Angie Keys at akeys@tracylc.net.

If a student misses more than 7 days of personal, unexcused, or suspension time (any combination) they will be asked to enroll at another school and their spot will be given to a student on the waitlist. In addition, sick days cannot be attached to personal days prior to or following personal days. All dates missed will then be considered personal.

When a student misses more than 3 consecutive days it is required to have a doctor’s note upon their return to excuse these absences. Absences that are not properly cleared by the parent or guardian within three days of the absence will be reported as unexcused. After a student reaches 10 sick/illness days during a school year a medical excuse must be provided for all illness related absences.

CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM: A “chronic absentee” has been defined in E C Section 60901(c)(1) as “a pupil who is absent on 10 percent or more of the school days in the school year when the total number of days a pupil is absent is divided by the total number of days the pupil is enrolled.” If a student is absent 18 days during the school year for any reason, they are considered a chronic absentee.

Students with significant absences, tardies or excessive early pick-ups for any reasons may be placed on an attendance contract or asked to withdraw at the CEO’s discretion.

According to the California Department of Education, children who are chronically absent in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the third grade. Students who cannot read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than proficient readers to drop out of high school. A study of public school students found that an incidence of chronic absenteeism in even a single year between 8th and 12th grade was associated with a seven-fold increase in the likelihood of dropping out. Additionally, high school dropout, which chronically absent students are more likely to experience, has been linked to poor outcomes later in life, from poverty and diminished health to involvement in the criminal justice system.

Par attendance can be a better predictor of whether students will drop out before graduation Please partner with us to ensure attendance at school remains a priority. Thank you,

Mrs. Woods

And our Millennium Girls team finished five runners in the top 12, including first and second place. The Millennium Boys team also had two runners in the top 10, led by Sophomore Diego Cervantes. Both teams have a great shot at winning the league championship this year!

What we are the most proud of this Fall is our team’s Academic Success!!! Each year, the CIF allows schools to submit their team GPAs to compete for Academic Team Championships. Last year, two of our Fall teams finished in the top 5 – this year, I expect all our team’s to do even better!

Millennium Football – 3.35

Varsity Volleyball – 3.85

Boys Cross Country – 3.74

Girls Cross Country – 3.69

Special Education

Any educator will tell you that no two children think and learn the same way, and all have experienced how it is sometimes necessary to present information in a completely different light to reach some students. The theory of multiple intelligences confirms these empirical experiences and can provide educators with a framework and tools that will allow them to better meet the needs of the different types of learners present in every classroom.

What is the theory of multiple intelligences?

The theory of multiple intelligences (MI) was first advanced by Dr. Howard Gardner, Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and adjunct professor of psychology at Harvard University, in his 1983 book Frames of mind. Challenging the traditional concept of intelligence, the theory of multiple intelligences suggests that each individual has eight different types of intelligences. These intelligences combine to form any individual’s specific cognitive potential.
