A Message from our CEO, Carolyn Woods

Hello, TLC! I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in this year’s Haunted High extravaganza! This is an event we look forward to every year. It showcases our talented drama/tech construction/film instructor, Mr. Snyder and his innovative ideas! Ms. Souza, our art teacher, also contributes her design expertise with the fun-filled Kid Zone. Together, they help the creative arts at MHS shine.

Thank you for another amazing Haunted High experience!

Mrs. Woods

A Message from our CEO, Carolyn Woods

Hello TLC families! We have another eventful week upon us. . . be sure to click on each school’s link to read more about the upcoming Red Ribbon Week and Halloween activities!

************************************************************************************

On another note, I would like to bring more awareness to Chronic Absenteeism. We are required to report attendance data to the state of California for all students in TK-12th grade. The state has clearly defined what constitutes a chronic absentee. Any student missing 10% of the school days to date are considered chronically absent. That means, if we have been in school for 50 days and a student has been absent five days, they would fall under the definition of chronically absent. The state does not distinguish between excused and unexcused absences- in their view, an absence is an absence. We have developed a multi-tiered system of support to track attendance and inform parents of this state requirement. If a student becomes chronically absent over the course of the school year, we will reach out to parents to develop a plan to support school attendance.

It is important to remember that missing just two days a month of school―for any reason― can be a problem for kids in a number of ways. Children who are chronically absent in kindergarten and first grade are less likely to read on grade level by the third grade. For older students, being chronically absent is strongly associated with failing at school―even more than low grades or test scores. When absences add up, these students are more likely to be suspended and drop out of high school. Chronic absenteeism is also linked with teen substance use, as well as poor health as adults.

Thank you for partnering with us and supporting good attendance habits!

Mrs. Woods

ALL TLC Parents:

The State of California has mandated that both parents have their educational level reported each year. This is a change from only requesting the highest education level of either parent. This data is used for funding the school.

This information will be used to update the information in Aeries.

The 9th Annual Golf Tournament is in the books. We had perfect weather and a great turnout. Thank you to the coaches who came out today to help or play from Baseball, Softball and Basketball. Thank you, Miss Lamana, Miss Arendsee, Miss Balsamo, and Mr. Young for coming out on your day off to play or help at the event. Between the staff members who donated, came to work or play, and our student-athletes who volunteered, we greatly appreciate your support. This is my biggest fundraiser every year and without the ones mentioned above and all our sponsors below, this event would not be a huge success without all of them.

Thank you to all who contributed to TLC’s Campus Beautification Fund! I am pleased to announce the Artificial Turf project is a go! The project is set to commence the first week of November (which is just around the corner!). The process will also include fencing off the entire area so that Primary can expand their playground and PE space. Thank you, again, for the generous donations!

Don’t forget to click on each school’s specific link to read more about upcoming events this month.

HOMECOMING week was amazing! I would like to extend a special thank you to our amazing staff, students, and families who showed up spirited day after day and participated in all of the activities. We started new traditions like Powder Puff for DCS (thanks, Coach Easterday!), and continued lasting traditions such as our Preschool-12th grade parade. Including the entire TLC community in homecoming activities is another unique aspect of our charter schools!

VERY SPECIAL THANKS to Ms. Tiffany Takeuchi, our Activities Director, for making this such a memorable 2023 Homecoming experience for all!

What Is ADHD?

 Reviewed by Psychology Today Staff

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (previously known as attention deficit disorder or ADD) is a neurobehavioral disorder characterized by core symptoms of inattentiveness, distractibility, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD is thought to be the most common childhood mental health disorder, with estimates of its prevalence in children ranging from 5 to 11 percent. ADHD in adulthood is thought to be less common, with approximately 2 to 5 percent of adults diagnosed.

ADHD symptoms can interfere with work, school, household tasks, and relationships, and managing the disorder can be a challenge for both children and adults. Fortunately, there are treatments that have been shown to be effective, and anyone affected by ADHD can learn coping skills to work around struggles and harness their talents—as many successful individuals with ADHD have already done.
