A weekly newsletter written to parents of the TLC
Thank you for the great showing at the Homecoming Parade on Wednesday. I believe it is the greatest student participation we have ever had. The floats were magnificent, the children spirited and the crowd along the street was awesome. Of course, the band was a great lead for the parade. Thank you for enduring the hottest weather we have had for a parade as well.
Finally, the homecoming events will come to an end and we will settle down into October. October is the end of the first quarter for the high school. Quarter grades are more like a progress report. These grades do not go on the transcript. The end of the semester is fifty school days later. That gives students who are not doing well a chance to recover. The most damaging thing to hurt grades is missing assignments. It is important to note that we do not accept late work. Assignments must be done on time.
Please also remember that attendance is another factor affecting success in school. Students need to be on time and avoid missing school whenever possible. When students are absent, they do have a time limit to make up missing work, but it is so much harder to catch up when students are absent. The state considers students who miss more than 10% of the school year as chronic absent students. Schools are judged on how well their students do with attending school regularly.

Hearing Van
The hearing van will be testing hearing the morning of October 17, 2019. Students who will be tested are all K, 1st, 2nd, 5th, 8th and 10th grade students.
Personal Days for Next School Year 2019/2020
VERY IMPORTANT CHANGE for our upcoming 2019/2020 school year Beginning August 5, 2019, we are reducing personal/family days for students from 10 days down to 7 days. Allowing 7 days is still much higher than what the district schools allow and we feel 7 days is more beneficial for the school and for each students’ education.

This week in TK we learned all about the seasons!
We started off the week learning about all the seasons. The students were able to taste something from the Winter and Summer season. Hot chocolate and cotton candy… both were favorites!!
For Spring and Fall the students were able to taste maple syrup and yummy, crisp apples! What a treat!
The students were able to draw pictures of their favorite parts of each season! Some of their favorite smells were the pinecone, peppermint and barbecue sauce. They certainly had fun learning all about our four seasons!
Initial Phase
Check out the three different Scholastic Let’s Find Out magazines in your child’s folder! We focused on character building for social studies this week. We talked about what sharing means, how to be a good friend, and revisited school rules. You can login to the website from the informational sheet previously sent home to watch the videos and play the games that go along with each magazine.
Happy first days of fall! It looks like we will have our first bit of cooler weather next week, which means students will be coming to school with sweatshirts. Be sure to write your student’s name in their jacket.
The preschool health fair is this Saturday from 9:00-1:00!
Phase One:
This was a fun week celebrating our MHS Homecoming! Each day was a fun dress up day and Wednesday was the Homecoming parade. Come support our MHS Falcons tonight at the football game at Tracy High.
Congratulations to all the students that worked so hard and met their AR goal! We will have our first AR party sometime next week. New AR goals will be sent home on October 7th. Encourage your student to read two books a week to help them stay on track.

What a fun Homecoming week! Thank you to everyone who participated in the parade and spirit days. Our Future Falcons sure showed their pride!
On Wednesday, Phase 2 will be welcoming “Cruzin Critters”, which is a live animal show! This is a great hands-on way to wrap up our science unit on animals and ecosystems. We are asking that parents please consider donating $5 to cover the cost of the show. Thank you!

Varsity: In this week, we started with review of the multiplication facts and then continued with 2-digit x 1-digit, 3-digit x 1-digit, and 2-digit x 2-digit multiplication. Students played multiplication Bingo, solved riddles, and puzzles to reinforce the multiplication facts and strategies.
Multiplication: The students should be practicing multiplication facts at home whenever possible. I have provided each student with a multiplication chart.
Scholastic: In this week students learned about estimating products and properties of multiplication. Students learned about various strategies and properties to use to multiply whole numbers and decimal numbers.

Honors: In this week students learned about solving multi-step equations using the Distributive property, getting rid of the constants, and the coefficients. In the coming weeks students will be learning to solve complex multi-step algebraic expressions.
Ms. Rodieck’s Language Arts and Humanities
Scholastic and Honors finished up Love That Dog this week and had their ‘Final’ for the book. It counts as a Weekly Quiz Grade in the Grade Book. They also submitted poems to PoeticPower.com for the chance at being published. If they are selected, you will be notified to give permission to published (in a few months). Next week they will be starting the Pentathlon Book Fever 1793. This book is based on historical events surrounding the Yellow Fever in Philadelphia.
In Humanities, they are nearly done with the Fundamentals of Music Unit. This has included creating a slideshow with a partner about a musical instrument and learning about the different Genres of Music.
Varsity is continuing with Love That Dog and will have their final soon, also. They are currently working on their Instrument slideshows and will be presenting them in class next week. They are also continuing to work on writing a good paragraph and practicing what they have learned in diagramming, so far.
Language Arts with Mr. Harding
We are concluding our first book study and the students are exploring their own discoveries through our close reading strategies. Along with learning the basics about the Hero’s Journey, Elements of Plot, and poetry, students are questioning the text and probing deeper into implied messages left by the author. Our study of how stories are made will certainly lend itself to students writing their own original stories in the near future.
Social Studies with Mr. Bird and Mr. McCarthy
Honors students finished their lesson on the rise of Sumerian city-states to understand how geographic challenges led to form city-states. Pictured below is a student listing geographic problem Sumerians faced and the solutions they came up with. Students then created real estate advertisements to attract people to one of the city-states in Sumer. We played quiz review games on Friday to prepare for the quiz on Monday, 9/30, on the rise of Sumerian city-states.
Scholastic and Varsity students are working in their interactive notebooks to learn about Sumer. They are reviewing power words for a vocabulary quiz on Friday, 9/27, and reading about Sumerian life.
All social studies notebooks or folders have been sent home with students to study.
Science with Ms. Diaz:
Greetings scientists! Did you know that you can make a paperclip float in the air? This week we found out that due to something called a magnetic field, a magnet can attract steel/iron objects from a distance. The bigger the magnet, the bigger the field! Amazing, isn’t it? Test scores including corrections have been put into Aeries, so do congratulate your student for a job well done in their learning journey. Study guides for next week’s Science Test #2 (covering forces, motion, energy) were given and filled out in class. The Hon/Sch classes also received two handouts about magnets that were glued and completed in their science notebooks. Completion of all three were checked and will be added to the gradebook. Friday was also a monthly agenda and science notebook check. Are they in good condition? Are they filled out? These are what I look for to get full points for each check. Finally, I have created a Google Classroom for all classes. Students were given the codes last week and need to be sure and join by this Friday. Hon/Sch classes were given a HW assignment, due Friday 11:59pm, and future announcements, assignments and tests will be posted on Google Classroom.

Ms. Greene
This year, 7/8 has the privilege of gaining a new Language Arts teacher: Ms. Greene! The students have been enjoying her class and have nothing but praise and admiration of her.
My name is Ms Greene, I grew up here in Tracy my entire life and went to West High. After high school I went to Sac State and received my bachelors in English. I am currently going to school for my credentials in Stockton at Teachers College of San Joaquin where I go every Wednesday evening. I am a die hard baseball fan, Go A’s! I also enjoy reading and swimming. I hope to have a great first year of teaching here at Discovery.
Language Arts with Ms. Greene
This week has been eventful with homecoming and spirit week going on in class. My homeroom, Honors, has done a great job this week with spirit having almost the whole class participate each day.
In Honors, we have started writing body paragraphs along with our introductions. The had their first writing assignment with the 2 types of paragraphs due on Wednesday and did quite well. Along with writing, we have been going steady reading Fever 1793 and the students seem to be enjoying it while we begin to see the plot develop. Students are continuing to be able to identify the different parts of a plot throughout the book as we read.
In Varsity, students are also writing introductions and body paragraphs. They are beginning to develop strong thesis statements and focus their ideas in the body paragraphs. They have been moving right along in the book and are starting to get to the rising action of it and are becoming more interested.
In Scholastic, students are similarly writing both parts of a paragraph and are doing quite well with the body paragraphs, keeping them focused and related to the topic. They are extremely enjoying the book and are starting to be able to summarize and identify the parts of the plot.
In all classes, we have done a debate based on articles we read related to health and wellness. Students are opinionated and know how to support their opinions with evidence. This week has been great, let’s keep up the good work.

Language Arts with Mrs. Cerezo
Welcome to Week 8! Time is flying!
All classes are continuing to read and discuss Fever 1793 and are beginning to make connections between the characters, the era, and its ramifications on today. The students are enjoying the novel and are excited to finish it! We project to be finished within the next week or two.
In each class we have begun our study of body paragraphs. For the newest writing assignments students have been asked to write both the introduction and first body paragraph. This assignment was due Wednesday and each student met with me to conference and discuss their work. We are moving slowly with writing this year and are pleased with the amount of progress students have made in such a short amount of time.
Finally, all students worked on creating a Review Game for the class. They were assigned a group and a topic and had to create a game that we could play to help us begin to review for our final (coming up in a few weeks!)
Math with Mr. Dhillon
Varsity :- doing unit 2 completed lesson 1 to lesson 11 ( finished quiz1 and quiz 2 )and will be doing lesson 12 dividing whole numbers by decimal.
Scholastic :- Doing unit 2 completed 2.1 to 2.7 and currently doing multi-step inequalities and compound inequalities.
honors :- doing unit 3 . (parallel and perpendicular lines) completed unit 3.1 to 3.3 ( will do review and quiz for 3.1 to 3.3) and will start with unit 3.4 slope of parallel lines and perpendicular lines
Campus Beautification
Mr. Hepner, Ms. Zaca, and all of Discovery staff want to thank each and every one of the 22 students who showed up last Saturday for our very first Discovery Campus Beautification! Students spent the three hours cleaning the eating tables in Discovery and Primary, cleared the baseball and softball field of debris and trash, pulled out any weeds, and helped Mr. Hepner prune the trees and bushes on campus. We are ever so grateful for the dedication our students show towards maintaining our campus and want to thank each and every parent for supporting that drive and motivation in their students. Our next beautification will take place in the end of October (date will be released early in the month).
Music Exploration with Mr. Dougherty:
DCS Music Exploration is in the middle of a pop opera project. This means that each class will
- Create, compose, and perform the music and story for a class pop opera.
- Decide on a setting, theme, and plot for the pop opera.
- Complete the lyrics and melody for five partially written pop opera songs.
- Decide on singers, movements, and staging for each song.
- Create or find props, costumes, and scenery for the show.
- Perform the pop opera in front of a live audience.
So far each class has come up with a very entertaining storyline. We are having a blast. Stay tuned to find out what happens in each of the sagas.
Art with Ms. Losen
This week in art we finalized our film premises and started storyboards. We also learned more about cinematography including shot varieties and camera movements so that we can begin filming later this week.
Spanish with Ms. Polo
For these next 2 weeks look for Worksheets Abeja and Ballena in your student’s folders/notebooks. There are 30 words/phrases they are responsible for. Those are highlighted. They should be able to read both aloud as we will have an oral quiz next week on reading A or B. They will be graded on pronunciation. We practice this every class. We will also begin Spanish Bee which is 25 commands/questions plus the 5 questions we use daily in class that will be written in their notebooks. Ex. Can I go to the bathroom (in Spanish)
Mr. Harding’s HR my Mon/Wed class in D9 is the last class to take examen #1. That will be this Thurs. We reviewed last Thurs.and we will be reviewing today Tuesday 9.17 as well. They should study in workroom tomorrow!

THIS WEEK AT MHS- Physical Education:
PE has gotten off to a fun start! The classes started off collaborating with one another to accomplish common goals. We met new people, learned to accept differences and how to create a safe learning environment.
During fitness we were able to introduce new equipment and learn about the 5 health related fitness components.

We’re finishing up unit 2 in Geometry (test Wednesday) and doing proof matching practice. Kids are excited about Homecoming and about wrapping up the unit!

Precalculus
Even during Homecoming week, math goes on! In Pre-Calculus we have been utilizing what we learned on parent functions from Unit 2 to now graph more complex functions. This is a challenging topic, but can be very rewarding when we get our graphs right!
Algebra 1A and Pre-algebra
Algebra 1A and Pre-algebra have both finished Unit 1 recently and we are getting into the nuts and bolts of what we can and can’t do with the Real Numbers. Grade reports for unit 1 have gone home for both of these classes. At this point in the year, my students have adjusted and are aware of the expectations and pace of math class. We are learning new math every day!
Math with Mrs. Griffin
Calculus
This week in Calculus we focused on our Limits Unit and we learned a lot about infinite limits and limits at infinity. Although they sound like the same thing, they really are not! Students really have to rely on a lot of prior knowledge from Algebra and Precalculus in order to be successful with this concept. We took a quiz today to finish out our week. Next week we will prepare for our end of the unit test!

Meet The Coaches!
Hello, my name is Destinee Rapp and I am the girls varsity volleyball coach. This is my first year coaching. I started coaching here at Millennium because I have always loved volleyball and it is something that I enjoyed playing in high school. I was mostly interested in coaching to help Coach Balsamo maintain the volleyball program here at Millennium in a successful way. The turn out for volleyball was amazing and we have so many talented girls. My goal as a coach was to better learn the game, but to also build relationships with these young women as a mentor and coach. I have a heart for teenage girls and helping them grow into mature and responsible young adults. I have enjoyed being on the coaching team and I love the growth I am seeing with the team. My hope was that coaching would become something I love to do and want to continue to do, so far I am all in. Coaching has taught me a lot about discipline and dedication and I am here for it. GO FALCONS!

- If you plan to bring a guest to the HOCO Dance on 9/27 after the game, you must obtain a Guest Pass from Miss Lamanna in the Activities Office (next to the counselors’ office). Guests will not be admitted if their guest pass has not been submitted to Miss Lamanna by 9/26.

Clubs
Academic Competition Club, which encompasses Speech and Debate, Mock Trial, and Academic Decathlon, will be offered at both lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning next week. First lunch will meet in Room 107, second lunch will meet in room 108. These exciting competition-based clubs prepare students for the challenges of college and look terrific on your resume, as well as helping you build team and communication skills. COUNSELING NEWS!
Fall semester interns have already completed a month of their internship! There are currently 66 seniors participating in their Senior Internship experience. Spring semester interns will begin the interviewing and placement process in the next few weeks. If you know of a business interested in offering an internship opportunity, please contact Mrs. Schaffran at tschaffran@tracylc.net The Senior Internship Program is a 5 credit graduation requirement in which students fulfill a 10 hour a week unpaid internship in the community or on campus. Each week, a seminar class meets and covers the 21st Century Skills curriculum introducing young adults to the world of work.

PSAT (Preliminary SAT) is scheduled for Wed October 30th – We are now taking registrations – The cost is $18 per student (Cash or Check – no refunds available) and will be from 7:30am – 11:45am in the Gym. The PSAT is a great practice tool for the actual test. All students can sign up in the counseling office. A practice booklet will be given upon registering. Space is limited.

We are looking for high school students that are interested in tutoring various subjects including math, history, science, and spanish. Paid opportunities are also available. If interested, students can visit the Millennium High School counseling office to pick up a tutor application.

Free and open to the public, the fair is for college-bound students interested in college majors and careers in engineering, medicine, computer science, and other STEM fields.
Students will meet face-to-face with hundreds of college representatives and industry professionals — all in one place. They’ll get their questions answered about majors, degree programs, campus visits, internships, scholarships, financial aid, and much more. Plus, they can take advantage of STEMinars on topics such as writing a winning college essay and standing out in the admission process.

Fieldtrip: UC Santa Cruz – Friday November 8, 2019
Millennium High School students will be visiting the UC Santa Cruz campus on November 8, 2019. The field trip is only currently open to Seniors and Juniors. Fieldtrip: Construction Trades Fair and San Joaquin Delta College
Twenty-nine Millennium High School students visited the 14th annual Construction Trades Fair and San Joaquin Delta College last Friday September 13, 2019. Students were able to get hands on experience at the Construction Trades Fair and visited three different departments at San Joaquin Delta College, which included Electron Microscopy, Nursing, and Automotive department tours.
