TLC Charter Chatter – Week of Aug 22nd

TLC Charter Chatter

News, Information, and Updates for Primary, Discovery, and Millennium Charter Schools

A Message from our CEO, Carolyn Woods

Hello, TLC parents, guardians, and families! We are starting an awareness campaign about the dangers of social media. Classes have had discussions about social media use and I am looking into doing more, but I need your help. Please partner with us on this important issue. Here are a few tips on how you can help:

How can I keep my children safe using social media?

  • Learn about the programs and apps your child is using. Some social media platforms have age restrictions to join, but it’s easy for children to get around these.
  • Show interest in your child’s online life and ask questions.
  • When possible, keep tablets and computers in common areas where you can watch while your child uses them.
  • Get online family protection. Programs that provide parental controls can block websites, enforce time limits, and monitor the websites your child visits, and their online conversations.
  • Follow your child’s online accounts, and tell them that you are monitoring their online activity to help keep them safe. Some children or teens may create a fake second account for their parents to follow.
  • Ask them about the people they “meet” online. Showing genuine interest will help them feel comfortable talking about it. Explain that it’s easy for someone on the Internet to pretend to be someone they’re not.
  • Talk about the importance of keeping online friendships in the online world. Make it clear that if your child wants to meet an online friend in person, it must be in a public place and with a trusted adult.
  • Discuss what’s okay and safe to post online, and what isn’t. Online posts stay online forever. As a general rule, your child shouldn’t post anything they wouldn’t want a parent or teacher to see or read.
  • People can’t always control what others post about them. Explain that information and photos found online can turn up again years later.
  • Explain that autocorrect can sometimes lead to miscommunication and hurt feelings.

I know many of you are following these steps already, but it is always good to have a refresher!

Thank you for your support,

Mrs. Woods

Survey response from over 2,000 parents by Common Sense Media, stated over 90% of their children under age 8 have used a mobile device and 48 percent report that their children under age 2 use mobile devices regularly.

While parents recognize the importance of limiting their children’s screen time, they are not sure how to go about it. With over 80 percent reporting they worry “a lot” or “some of the time” about losing parental control of kids’ access to screens, they also do not feel confident in their own ability to manage kids’ screen use at home.

Below are two articles related to screen time and how as a parent you can better control your child’s technology time. Click below to learn more.

Discovery Charter School 5th-8th:

Dear DCS parents and guardians,

This school year our Discovery Athletics program is in the building phase. We have appointed Coach Easterday as the Athletic Director and he has been reaching out to surrounding school districts to partner with them and develop our program. We wanted to include cheer as one of our programs, however, at this time, we are going to have to put a pause on the cheer program. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We are going to put clear guidelines and protocols in place for the future and this will take time to develop.

There will be more opportunities to participate in DCS sports for all students this year, such as basketball, volleyball, and soccer. Check the Charter Chatter often for updates on DCS sports.

Thank you for your understanding,

Carolyn Woods, CEO

IMPORTANT

As required by California law (Health and Safety Code 120325 – 120375), parents need to provide proof of a Tdap vaccine (pertussis – Whooping Cough Booster) for all students entering the 7th grade. Documentation must state the shot was given on or after their 7th birthday. This means ALL current 7th graders must get up to date NOW.

It is important that you begin now, to ensure your child gets his/her required vaccination prior to school re-opening on August 1, 2022. We suggest you call and arrange this vaccine appointment asap.

Getting them up to date now, will not only protect them against Pertussis but also ensure class placement and prevent exclusion from school once students return to campus.

Remember to ask your physician about other vaccines your child may need, and bring your child’s yellow immunization card to the visit. Please return a copy of ALL up-to-date immunizations to school prior to the beginning of the next year school year.

For questions, please call your primary physician today or call the San Joaquin County Public Health Services Program, at (209) 468-3481.

Students will not be allowed to attend campus classes without his/her completion of all school-required vaccines/immunizations.

Fall Sports Recap

Football – The Falcons Varsity football team traveled to Riverbank on Aug 19th and won! The final score was 13-0 – Senior running back Ethan Dargin led to the team on offense, with two impressive touchdown runs. He also had a sack, six tackles and an interception.

Sophomore Andre Saldate also had a great game on defense! He had 8 tackles, a forced fumble, and recorded 4 sacks!

The Girls Volleyball opened their season on Friday, August 19th against Pacheco High School – we had a great crowd! The gym was packed, and our girls played hard, and while we didn’t come out victorious, we showed improvement from one game to the next. On Monday, the varsity team traveled to Ben Holt Academy and won their first set of the season! They also played at home against Chavez High School, and the games were close at all levels – these Lady Falcons are really fun to watch! The next home game is Thursday, September 1st at Kimball – come watch our youngest Falcons, the Freshmen team, as they face River Islands High School! The game will start at 530pm!

Senior Danika Nunez is an important member of the team this year! She excels at soccer and decided to play volleyball this year and is having a great time!

Our Cross Country team has their first meet on September 13th – These are two of our seniors, Emma Curran and Emily Barrios-Cruz! They are excited to be running this year, and can’t wait to post their fastest times ever under the leadership of our new Coach – Mr. Copass!!!

Did you know you can earn Nest Points for attending games! Students get your student ID card scanned at the door to earn 20 points for a home game, and 40 points for a road game! We had 18 students travel to the Foundation game in Stockton on Monday night! They each earned 40 points for themselves! Way to show your support Falcons!

DCS Cheer tryouts update…..

Discovery Cheer Team Update

“Hi TLC Family! My name is Ms. A and I’m proud to be coaching Discovery’s new cheer team this year. I was overwhelmed by the amount of interest I had in the team, with 50 girls attending tryouts!
Unfortunately, this left me in the tough position of selecting only 20 girls to ultimately be on the team. The team was selected based on the performance of tryout material, as well as sportsmanship throughout tryouts. I aimed to make my team representative of DCS as a whole, so I’m excited to have girls from 5th-8th grade on the team.
I can understand how disappointing this may be for those that did not make the team. I was extremely impressed by this group of young ladies and they should all be very proud of themselves! I look forward to a successful year, and the possibility of growing the DCS cheer program next year.”

TLC Charter Chatter

News, Information, and Updates for Primary, Discovery, and Millennium Charter Schools

A Message from our CEO, Carolyn Woods

Hello! Week three has come and gone, and I am happy to report that students and teachers have settled into routines, the curriculum is in full swing and carline is running smoothly for all three schools. We are off to a good start!

There are many different people who contribute to the success of the Tracy Learning Center. One of those people is Dan Saldate

I will let him introduce himself to you:

Hello TLC families.  My name is Dan Saldate.  I have been a part of the Tracy Learning Center for nineteen years. I was one of the original teachers that started Millennium High School in 2004 and taught social studies while also serving as the Director of MHS.

I hold a master’s degree in education and a school administration credential. In 2019, I was assigned to an administrative role with TLC. Currently, I am employed as the assistant superintendent of staff and student affairs encompassing all three TLC charter schools. My role is to provide staff and student support, observe and evaluate all staff members, provide staff human resources support, and conduct discipline for staff and students. I also serve as the title nine coordinators for TLC and the TLC Board Secretary. I am very proud to have spent my career in education at the Tracy Learning Center.

–  Mr Saldate

You will find Mr. Saldate in the office directly across from mine. We partner on many important administrative tasks and duties. He is an important member of the team!

You will receive another report at the end of the trimester that will show their growth over the next few months. Please reach out to your child’s teachers if you have questions.

Now that our afternoon carline is running smoothly, we will end our carline at 3:35 every day. If you arrive to pick your child up after 3:35, this will be considered a late pick up and you will need to pick them up from the office.

Thank you for being on time!

With this support, the Charter SELPA’s partners continue to demonstrate the capacity to provide high quality special education programs to their students. The El Dorado Charter SELPA was the first statewide charter-only SELPA. The Charter SELPA is a cooperative model designed to ensure special education programs are available for all students with disabilities.

News, Information, and Updates for Primary, Discovery, and Millennium Charter Schools

A Message from our CEO, Carolyn Woods

Thank you to all who attended Discovery and Millennium’s back-to-school nights this week. It was wonderful to see such a great turnout and to welcome parents back to campus. The entire staff is here for you; if you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

We have implemented a new safety protocol here at TLC. All staff and students are required to wear lanyards during the school day. Wearing ID badges is an important element of safeguarding in schools- they help prevent unauthorized personnel from entering school property, and wearing a distinctive lanyard in the same color helps to easily identify staff and students.

If your Discovery or Millennium student forgets their lanyard, they will be issued a green loaner, which will have to be returned at the end of the day. If they repeatedly forget their lanyard, a replacement student lanyard will need to be purchased for $5.00. Please help ensure that your student comes prepared with their lanyard each day. (Primary students keep their lanyards in their classrooms).

Thank you for your cooperation!

Mrs. Woods

New CDPH COVID Guidelines for California Schools

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students:

We are continuing to follow the guidelines set forth by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to ensure the safety of our staff and students. Upon their recommendation, due to the contagious nature of recent COVID-19 variants, we will not be providing individual exposure notifications at this time.  Instead, please know that there is currently a high potential to be exposed to someone with COVID-19 (both in and out of school) and we encourage ALL students to follow the actions below to protect one another:

  • Wearing a mask in indoor settings is highly recommended to protect yourself and prevent the spread COVID-19. High-quality masks with a good fit and filtration provide the best protection.

  • If you develop symptoms of COVID-19, stay home and get tested. You may get tested at a local testing site or use an over-the-counter (at-home) test.

  • If you test positive for COVID-19, isolate at home and notify us right away at 209-290-0511. When you notify us, we can take additional steps to keep our school community safe.

  • Stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations. Vaccination remains the best way to protect yourself against severe disease.

We will reassess the situation as updated guidance is released. Note that infections diagnosed in students and school staff are not necessarily the result of exposure at school, and when safety protocols are followed in schools, COVID-19 transmission remains more likely to occur outside of school settings.

Thank you for considering this important information.  We consider the health and well-being of our community a priority.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Woods

CEO, Tracy Learning Center

Welcome back to all of our returning families and big welcome to TLC to our newest additions! I am Carolyn Woods, the CEO of the Tracy Learning Center. My responsibilities are similar to those of a superintendent at district schools. I am responsible for carrying out all of the policies of the governing board. As the CEO, I set the vision for the school culture, serve as the financial officer for all of the schools, ensure that all requirements of the charter are met, provide administrative support for curriculum and instruction, oversee the staff and students from preschool through 12th grade and provide support to all stakeholders including parents and community members . . . among other things! I am dedicated to ensuring that the Tracy Learning Center schools thrive and that the staff, students and parents feel supported.

I have worked at the Tracy Learning Center since 2004, starting as the first kindergarten teacher at Primary. From 2004 to 2018, I taught grades K-4, while also serving as the school leader for Primary for many years. In 2017 I transitioned to a full-time administrative role as the Director of Human Resources and Student Support. Last year, I was humbled and honored to be named the CEO of the Tracy Learning Center, succeeding Virginia Stewart, who had been at the helm for twenty years. I was privileged to work closely with Virginia and learn all that I could from her. TLC is near and dear to my heart, and almost quite literally a second home for my family as my husband, Mr. Woods, teachers at the high school (and has been since 2003!) and my daughters attend Discovery and Millennium. My son graduated from Millennium in 2019, after attending TLC since kindergarten, and is now a senior in college!

I believe in our program and feel we offer an educational experience unlike any other. We are a charter school for a reason, we exist to be different and to try new and innovative ways of teaching. Our students come first! Thank you for choosing to be a part of the TLC family.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Woods

Primary Charter School

Welcome back PCS families! We are excited to start another great school year with our little Falcons!

Thank you for making our first week carline a smooth and efficient system. Remember, there are 3 pick up options this year: drive through the carline, parent walk up, and walkers (must have permission for this option). We would appreciate it if parents do not park along the carline route on Mae, as it slows down the cars that are driving through. Also, as a courtesy, please do not park in carline and leave your car unattended in the moving line as you walk up to get your child. Thank you for partnering with us to get your child to you quickly and safely!

If you have a PCS student and a DCS student, you may drop them both off in the DCS front carline and your Primary student will wait with them until 7:45. No need to wait in both carlines!

Don’t forget to order your Spirit Wear! The online store will close on August 12. Go to: http://www.selectspiritwear.com/ Please put your child’s room number on your order to ensure prompt delivery.

PCS Picture day will be August 24 for grades K-4. TK picture day will be August 25. Please be on the lookout for more information to come home soon.
